The space of all non degenerate bilinear structures on a manifold $M$ carries a one parameter family of pseudo Riemannian metrics. We determine the geodesic equation, covariant derivative, curvature, and we solve the geodesic equation explicitly. Each space of pseudo Riemannian metrics with fixed signature is a geodesically closed submanifold. The space of non degenerate 2-forms is also a geodesically closed submanifold. Then we show that, if we fix a distribution on $M$, the space of all Riemannia metrics splits as the product of three spaces which are everywhere mutually orthogonal, for the usual metric. We investigate this situation in detail.
This is partly an expository paper, where the authors' work on pseudoriemannian Einstein metrics on nilpotent Lie groups is reviewed. A new criterion is given for the existence of a diagonal Einstein metric on a nice nilpotent Lie group. Classifications of special classes of Ricci-flat metrics on nilpotent Lie groups of dimension $\leq8$ are obtained. Some related open questions are presented.
The main focus of the paper is the investigation of moduli space of left invariant pseudoRiemannian metrics on the cotangent bundle of Heisenberg group. Consideration of orbits of the automorphism group naturally acting on the space of the left invariant metrics allows us to use the algebraic approach. However, the geometrical tools, such as classification of hyperbolic plane conics, will often be required. For metrics that we obtain in the classification, we investigate geometrical properties: curvature, Ricci tensor, sectional curvature, holonomy and parallel vector fields. The classificatio…
Consider a smooth manifold with a smooth metric which changes bilinear type from Riemann to Lorentz on a hypersurface $Σ$ with radical tangent to $Σ$. Two natural bilinear symmetric forms appear there, and we use it to analyze the geometry of $Σ$. We show the way in which these forms control the smooth extensibility over $Σ$ of the covariant, sectional and Ricci curvatures of the Levi-Civita connection outside $Σ$.
Several Riemannian metrics and families of Riemannian metrics were defined on the manifold of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices. Firstly, we formalize a common general process to define families of metrics: the principle of deformed metrics. We relate the recently introduced family of alpha-Procrustes metrics to the general class of mean kernel metrics by providing a sufficient condition under which elements of the former belongs to the latter. Secondly, we focus on the principle of balanced bilinear forms that we recently introduced. We give a new sufficient condition under which the…
We extend the complex-valued analytic torsion, introduced by Burghelea and Haller on closed manifolds, to compact Riemannian bordisms. We do so by considering a flat complex vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold, endowed with a fiberwise nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form. The Riemmanian metric and the bilinear form are used to define non-selfadjoint Laplacians acting on vector-valued smooth forms under absolute and relative boundary conditions. In the process to define the complex-valued analytic torsion, we study spectral properties associated to these generalized Laplacians. A…
Via a non degenerate symmetric bilinear form we identify the coadjoint representation with a new representation and so we induce on the orbits a simplectic form. By considering Hamiltonian systems on the orbits we study some features of them and finally find commuting functions under the corresponding Lie-Poisson bracket
The Hessian of the renormalized volume of geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds without rank-$1$ cusps, computed at the hyperbolic metric $g$ with totally geodesic boundary of the convex core, is shown to be a strictly positive bilinear form on the tangent space to Teichmüller space. The metric $g$ is known from results of Bonahon and Storm to be an absolute minimum for the volume of the convex core. We deduce the strict convexity of the functional volume of the convex core at its minimum point.
The present paper contains a systematic study of the structure of metric Lie algebras, i.e., finite-dimensional real Lie algebras equipped with a non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form. We show that any metric Lie algebra without simple ideals has the structure of a so called balanced quadratic extension of an auxiliary Lie algebra l by an orthogonal l-module A in a canonical way. Identifying equivalence classes of quadratic extensions of l by A with a certain cohomology set H^2_Q(l,A) we obtain a classification scheme for general metric Lie algebras and a complete classification of …
Let V be the pseudo-Euclidean vector space of signature (p,q), p>2 and W a module over the even Clifford algebra Cl^0 (V). A homogeneous quaternionic manifold (M,Q) is constructed for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: \wedge^2 W \to V. If the skew symmetric vector valued bilinear form Πis nondegenerate then (M,Q) is endowed with a canonical pseudo-Riemannian metric g such that (M,Q,g) is a homogeneous quaternionic pseudo-Kähler manifold. The construction is shown to have a natural mirror in the category of supermanifolds. In fact, for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: Sym^2 W \to V a h…
We deal with finite dimensional differentiable manifolds. All items are concerned with are differentiable as well. The class of differentiability is $C^\infty$. A metric structure in a vector bundle $E$ is a constant rank symmetric bilinear vector bundle homomorphism of $E\times E$ in the trivial bundle line bundle. We address the question whether a given gauge structure in $E$ is metric. That is the main concerns. We use generalized Amari functors of the information geometry for introducing two index functions defined in the moduli space of gauge structures in $E$. Beside we introduce a diffe…
Let $M$ be a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous space of finite volume with isometry group $G$. We show that $M$ is compact and that the solvable radical of $G$ is abelian and the Levi factor is a compact semisimple Lie group acting transitively on $M$. For metric index less than three, we find that the isometry group of $M$ is compact itself. Examples demonstrate that $G$ is not necessarily compact for higher indices. To prepare these results, we study Lie algebras with abelian solvable radical and a nil-invariant symmetric bilinear form. For these, we derive an orthogonal decompo…
We consider the equations, arising as the conformal invariance conditions of the perturbed curved beta-gamma system. These equations have the physical meaning of Einstein equations with a B-field and a dilaton on a hermitian manifold, where the B-field 2-form is imaginary and proportional to the canonical form associated with hermitian metric. We show that they decompose into linear and bilinear equations and lead to the vanishing of the first Chern class of the manifold where the system is defined. We discuss the relation of these equations to the generalized Maurer-Cartan structures related …
Let $\mathcal M= (M,\mathcal O_\mathcal M)$ be a smooth supermanifold with connection $\nabla$ and Batchelor model $\mathcal O_\mathcal M\congΓ_{ΛE^\ast}$. From $(\mathcal M,\nabla)$ we construct a connection on the total space of the vector bundle $E\to{M}$. This reduction of $\nabla$ is well-defined independently of the isomorphism $\mathcal O_\mathcal M \cong Γ_{ΛE^\ast}$. It erases information, but however it turns out that the natural identification of supercurves in $\mathcal M$ (as maps from $ \mathbb R^{1|1}$ to $\mathcal M$) with curves in $E$ restricts to a 1 to 1 correspondence on g…
A pseudo-Euclidean non-associative algebra $(\mathfrak{g}, \bullet)$ is a real algebra of finite dimension that has a metric, i.e., a bilinear, symmetric, and non-degenerate form $\langle\;\rangle$. The metric is considered $\mathrm{L}$-invariant (resp. $\mathrm{R}$-invariant) if all left multiplications (resp. right multiplications) are skew-symmetric. The metric is called associative if $\langle u\bullet v,w\rangle= \langle u,v\bullet w\rangle$ for all $u, v, w \in \mathfrak{g}$. These three notions coincide when $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Lie algebra and in this case $\mathfrak{g}$ endowed with th…
The third real de Rham cohomology of compact homogeneous spaces is studied. Given $M=G/K$ with $G$ compact semisimple, we first show that each bi-invariant symmetric bilinear form $Q$ on $\mathfrak{g}$ such that $Q|_{\mathfrak{k}\times\mathfrak{k}}=0$ naturally defines a $G$-invariant closed $3$-form $H_Q$ on $M$, which plays the role of the so called Cartan $3$-form $Q([\cdot,\cdot],\cdot)$ on the compact Lie group $G$. Indeed, every class in $H^3(G/K)$ has a unique representative $H_Q$. Secondly, focusing on the class of homogeneous spaces with the richest third cohomology (other than Lie gr…
Generalizing a construction presented in [3], we show that the orbit space of $B_2$ less the image of coordinate lines under the quotient map is equipped with two Dubrovin-Frobenius manifold structures which are related respectively to the defocusing and the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. Motivated by this example, we study the case of $B_n$ and we show that the defocusing case can be generalized to arbitrary $n$ leading to a Dubrovin-Frobenius manifold structure on the orbit space of the group. The construction is based on the existence of a non-degenerate and non-constant in…
A supermanifold M is canonically associated to any pseudo Riemannian spin manifold (M_0,g_0). Extending the metric g_0 to a field g of bilinear forms g(p) on T_p M, p\in M_0, the pseudo Riemannian supergeometry of (M,g) is formulated as G-structure on M, where G is a supergroup with even part G_0\cong Spin(k,l); (k,l) the signature of (M_0,g_0). Killing vector fields on (M,g) are, by definition, infinitesimal automorphisms of this G-structure. For every spinor field s there exists a corresponding odd vector field X_s on M. Our main result is that X_s is a Killing vector field on (M,g) if and o…
