A Bonnesen-type inequality is a sharp isoperimetric inequality that includes an error estimate in terms of inscribed and circumscribed regions. A kinematic technique is used to prove a Bonnesen-type inequality for the Euclidean sphere (having constant positive Gauss curvature) and the hyperbolic plane (having constant negative Gauss curvature). These generalized inequalities each converge to the classical Bonnesen-type inequality for the Euclidean plane as the curvature approaches zero.
In this paper we are interested in some Bonnesen-type isoperimetric inequalities for plane n-gons in relation with the two conjectures proposed by P. Levy and X.M. Zhang.
Within the $Γ_2$-calculus of Bakry and Ledoux, we define the Ricci tensor induced by a diffusion operator, we deduce precise formulas for its behavior under drift transformation, time change and conformal transformation, and we derive new transformation results for the curvature-dimension conditions of Bakry-Emery as well as for those of Lott-Sturm-Villani. Our results are based on new identities and sharp estimates for the $N$-Ricci tensor and for the Hessian. In particular, we obtain Bochner's formula in the general setting.
Comparison of $1$-dimensional distance functions is a basic tool in Alexandrov geometry and it is used to characterize spaces with curvature bounded above or below. For the zero curvature bound there is a differential inequality which enables one to check this comparison directly on a given smooth $1$-dimensional distance function. In this note we give a generalization of this property to arbitrary curvature bounds.
We show that the perimeter of the convex hull of finitely many disks lying in the hyperbolic or Euclidean plane, or in a hemisphere does not increase when the disks are rearranged so that the distances between their centers do not increase. This generalizes the theorem on the monotonicity of the perimeter of the convex hull of a finite set under contractions, proved in the Euclidean plane by V. N. Sudakov, R. Alexander, V. Capoyleas and J. Pach. We also prove that the area of the intersection of finitely many disks in the hyperbolic plane does not decrease after such a contractive rearrangemen…
We establish several inequalities for manifolds with positive scalar curvature and, more generally, for the scalar curvature bounded from below, in the spirit of the classical bound on the distances between conjugates points in surfaces with positive sectional curvature.
We establish a Harnack inequality for finite connected graphs with non-negative Ricci curvature. As a consequence, we derive an eigenvalue lower bound, extending previous results for Ricci flat graphs.
We study various transport-information inequalities under three different notions of Ricci curvature in the discrete setting: the curvature-dimension condition of Bakry and Émery, the exponential curvature-dimension condition of Bauer \textit{et al.} and the coarse Ricci curvature of Ollivier. We prove that under a curvature-dimension condition or coarse Ricci curvature condition, an $L_1$ transport-information inequality holds; while under an exponential curvature-dimension condition, some weak-transport information inequalities hold. As an application, we establish a Bonnet-Meyer's theorem u…
We show that if the random walk on a graph has positive coarse Ricci curvature in the sense of Ollivier, then the stationary measure satisfies a W^1 transport-entropy inequality. Peres and Tetali have conjectured a stronger consequence, that a modified log-Sobolev inequality (MLSI) should hold, in analogy with the setting of Markov diffusions. We discuss how our entropy interpolation approach suggests a natural attack on the MLSI conjecture.
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
In the present article, we provide a characterization of a lower $N$-weighted Ricci curvature bound for $N \in ]-\infty,1]\cup[n,+\infty]$ with $\varepsilon$-range introduced by Lu-Minguzzi-Ohta in terms of a convexity of entropies over Wasserstein space. We further derive various interpolation inequalities and functional inequalities.
We obtain new sharp isoperimetric inequalities on a Riemannian manifold equipped with a probability measure, whose generalized Ricci curvature is bounded from below (possibly negatively), and generalized dimension and diameter of the convex support are bounded from above (possibly infinitely). Our inequalities are sharp for sets of any given measure and with respect to all parameters (curvature, dimension and diameter). Moreover, for each choice of parameters, we identify the model spaces which are extremal for the isoperimetric problem. In particular, we recover the Gromov--Lévy and Bakry--Le…
We prove that the results regarding the Isoperimetric inequality and Cheeger constant formulated in terms of the Minkowski content, obtained by the authors in previous papers in the framework of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces verifying the local curvature dimension condition, also hold in the stronger formulation in terms of the perimeter.
This paper is about hyperbolic properties on planar graphs. First, we study the relations among various kinds of strong isoperimetric inequalities on planar graphs and their duals. In particular, we show that a planar graph satisfies a strong isoperimetric inequality if and only if its dual has the same property, if the graph satisfies some minor regularity conditions and we choose an appropriate notion of strong isoperimetric inequalities. Second, we consider planar graphs where negative combinatorial curvatures dominate, and use the outcomes of the first part to strengthen the results of Hig…
In this paper, we explore the relationship between one of the most elementary and important properties of graphs, the presence and relative frequency of triangles, and a combinatorial notion of Ricci curvature. We employ a definition of generalized Ricci curvature proposed by Ollivier in a general framework of Markov processes and metric spaces and applied in graph theory by Lin-Yau. In analogy with curvature notions in Riemannian geometry, we interpret this Ricci curvature as a control on the amount of overlap between neighborhoods of two neighboring vertices. It is therefore naturally relate…
For metric measure spaces verifying the reduced curvature-dimension condition $CD^*(K,N)$ we prove a series of sharp functional inequalities under the additional assumption of essentially non-branching. Examples of spaces entering this framework are (weighted) Riemannian manifolds satisfying lower Ricci curvature bounds and their measured Gromov Hausdorff limits, Alexandrov spaces satisfying lower curvature bounds and more generally $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces, Finsler manifolds endowed with a strongly convex norm and satisfying lower Ricci curvature bounds, etc. In particular we prove Brunn-Minkowski…
In this paper we consider complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth, of dimension $n \geq 3$. We prove a sharp Willmore-type inequality for closed hypersurfaces $\partial Ω$ in $M$, with equality holding true if and only if $(M{\setminus}Ω, g)$ is isometric to a truncated cone over $\partialΩ$. An optimal version of Huisken's Isoperimetric Inequality for $3$-manifolds is obtained using this result. Finally, exploiting a natural extension of our techniques to the case of parabolic manifolds, we also deduce an enhanced version …
This work is devoted to the geometric analysis of metric-measure spaces satisfying a Prekopa-Leindler or a more general Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality. Completing the early investigations by Cordero-Erausquin, McCann and Schmuckenschlager, we show that these functional inequalities characterize lower bounds on the Ricci curvature on a Riemannian manifold, providing thus an alternate version of Ricci curvature lower bounds in measured length spaces to the recent developments by Lott, Villani and Sturm. We also investigate stability properties and geometric and functional inequalities, such as …
We prove a pair of sharp reverse isoperimetric inequalities for domains in nonpositively curved surfaces: (1) metric disks centered at the vertex of a Euclidean cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved disks of the same perimeter and the same total curvature; (2) geodesic triangles in a Euclidean (resp. hyperbolic) cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved geodesic triangles (resp. all geodesic triangles of curvature at most $-1$) with the same side lengths and angles.
We prove local Poincaré inequalities under various curvature-dimension conditions which are stable under the measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. The first class of spaces we consider is that of weak CD(K,N) spaces as defined by Lott and Villani. The second class of spaces we study consists of spaces where we have a flow satisfying an evolution variational inequality for either the Rényi entropy functional $E_N(ρm) = -\int_X ρ^{1-1/N} dm$ or the Shannon entropy functional $E_\infty(ρm) = \int_X ρ\log ρdm$. We also prove that if the Rényi entropy functional is strongly displacement convex in …
We study the isoperimetric, functional and concentration properties of $n$-dimensional weighted Riemannian manifolds satisfying the Curvature-Dimension condition, when the generalized dimension $N$ is negative, and more generally, is in the range $N \in (-\infty,1)$, extending the scope from the traditional range $N \in [n,\infty]$. In particular, we identify the correct one-dimensional model-spaces under an additional diameter upper bound, and discover a new case yielding a \emph{single} model space (besides the previously known $N$-sphere and Gaussian measure when $N \in [n,\infty]$): a (pos…
This paper provides rates of convergence for empirical (generalised) barycenters on compact geodesic metric spaces under general conditions using empirical processes techniques. Our main assumption is termed a variance inequality and provides a strong connection between usual assumptions in the field of empirical processes and central concepts of metric geometry. We study the validity of variance inequalities in spaces of non-positive and non-negative Aleksandrov curvature. In this last scenario, we show that variance inequalities hold provided geodesics, emanating from a barycenter, can be ex…
