Employing recent results of Robinson (2005) we consider the asymptotic properties of conditional-sum-of-squares (CSS) estimates of parametric models for stationary time series with long memory. CSS estimation has been considered as a rival to Gaussian maximum likelihood and Whittle estimation of time series models. The latter kinds of estimate have been rigorously shown to be asymptotically normally distributed in case of long memory. However, CSS estimates, which should have the same asymptotic distributional properties under similar conditions, have not received comparable treatment: the truncation of the infinite autoregressive representation inherent in CSS estimation has been essentially ignored in proofs of asymptotic normality. Unlike in short memory models it is not straightforward to show the truncation has negligible effect.
The conditional distribution of the next outcome given the infinite past of a stationary process can be inferred from finite but growing segments of the past. Several schemes are known for constructing pointwise consistent estimates, but they all demand prohibitive amounts of input data. In this paper we consider real-valued time series and construct conditional distribution estimates that make much more efficient use of the input data. The estimates are consistent in a weak sense, and the question whether they are pointwise consistent is still open. For finite-alphabet processes one may rely …
One of the main goals in non-life insurance is to estimate the claims reserve distribution. A generalized time series model, that allows for modeling the conditional mean and variance of the claim amounts, is proposed for the claims development. On contrary to the classical stochastic reserving techniques, the number of model parameters does not depend on the number of development periods, which leads to a more precise forecasting. Moreover, the time series innovations for the consecutive claims are not considered to be independent anymore. Conditional least squares are used for model paramete…
We propose a method for inferring the conditional independence graph (CIG) of a high-dimensional Gaussian vector time series (discrete-time process) from a finite-length observation. By contrast to existing approaches, we do not rely on a parametric process model (such as, e.g., an autoregressive model) for the observed random process. Instead, we only require certain smoothness properties (in the Fourier domain) of the process. The proposed inference scheme works even for sample sizes much smaller than the number of scalar process components if the true underlying CIG is sufficiently sparse. …
A new mixture autoregressive model based on Student's $t$-distribution is proposed. A key feature of our model is that the conditional $t$-distributions of the component models are based on autoregressions that have multivariate $t$-distributions as their (low-dimensional) stationary distributions. That autoregressions with such stationary distributions exist is not immediate. Our formulation implies that the conditional mean of each component model is a linear function of past observations and the conditional variance is also time varying. Compared to previous mixture autoregressive models ou…
In this note we consider non-stationary cluster point processes and we derive their conditional intensity, i.e. the intensity of the process given the locations of one or more events of the process. We then provide some approximations of the conditional intensity.
We study efficiency of non-parametric estimation of diffusions (stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motion) from long stationary trajectories. First, we introduce estimators based on conditional expectation which is motivated by the definition of drift and diffusion coefficients. These estimators involve time- and space-discretization parameters for computing expected values from discretely-sampled stationary data. Next, we analyze consistency and mean squared error of these estimators depending on computational parameters. We derive relationships between the number of observa…
In this paper, we introduce a new jump process modeling which involves a particular kind of non-Gaussian stochastic processes with random jumps at random time points. The main goal of this study is to provide an accurate tracking technique based on non-linear non-stationary heteroscedasticity (NNH) time series. It is, in fact, difficult to track jump processes regarding the fact that non-Gaussianity is an inherent feature in these processes. The proposed NNH model is conditionally Gaussian whose conditional variance is time-varying. Therefore, we use Kalman filter for state tracking. We show a…
The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic properties of a class of kernel conditional mode estimates whenever functional stationary ergodic data are considered. To be more precise on the matter, in the ergodic data setting, we consider a random element $(X, Z)$ taking values in some semi-metric abstract space $E\times F$. For a real function $φ$ defined on the space $F$ and $x\in E$, we consider the conditional mode of the real random variable $φ(Z)$ given the event $``X=x"$. While estimating the conditional mode function, say $θ_φ(x)$, using the well-known kernel estimator, we establis…
Accurate modelling of the joint extremal dependence structure within a stationary time series is a challenging problem that is important in many applications.\ Several previous approaches to this problem are only applicable to certain types of extremal dependence in the time series such as asymptotic dependence, or Markov time series of finite order.\ In this paper, we develop statistical methodology for time series extremes based on recent probabilistic results that allow us to flexibly model the decay of a stationary time series after witnessing an extreme event.\ While Markov sequences of f…

Stationary stochastic processes (SPs) are a key component of many probabilistic models, such as those for off-the-grid spatio-temporal data. They enable the statistical symmetry of underlying physical phenomena to be leveraged, thereby aiding generalization. Prediction in such models can be viewed as a translation equivariant map from observed data sets to predictive SPs, emphasizing the intimate relationship between stationarity and equivariance. Building on this, we propose the Convolutional Neural Process (ConvNP), which endows Neural Processes (NPs) with translation equivariance and extend…
This paper, investigates the conditional quantile estimation of a scalar random response and a functional random covariate (i.e. valued in some infinite-dimensional space) whenever {\it functional stationary ergodic data with random censorship} are considered. We introduce a kernel type estimator of the conditional quantile function. We establish the strong consistency with rate of this estimator as well as the asymptotic normality which induces a confidence interval that is usable in practice since it does not depend on any unknown quantity. An application to electricity peak demand interval …
We consider the kernel partial least squares algorithm for non-parametric regression with stationary dependent data. Probabilistic convergence rates of the kernel partial least squares estimator to the true regression function are established under a source and an effective dimensionality condition. It is shown both theoretically and in simulations that long range dependence results in slower convergence rates. A protein dynamics example shows high predictive power of kernel partial least squares.
In this article, we propose a novel variable screening method for linear models named as conditional screening via ordinary least squares projection (COLP). COLP can take advantage of prior knowledge concerning certain active predictors by eliminating the adverse impact of their coefficients in the estimation of remaining ones and thus significantly enhance the screening accuracy. We prove its sure-screening property under reasonable assumptions and demonstrate its utility in an application to a leukemia dataset. Moreover, based on the conditional approach, we introduce an iterative algorithm …
We study asymptotic properties of conditional least squares estimators for the drift parameters of two-factor affine diffusions based on continuous time observations. We distinguish three cases: subcritical, critical and supercritical. For all the drift parameters, in the subcritical and supercritical cases, asymptotic normality and asymptotic mixed normality is proved, while in the critical case, non-standard asymptotic behavior is described.
Iterative imputation, in which variables are imputed one at a time each given a model predicting from all the others, is a popular technique that can be convenient and flexible, as it replaces a potentially difficult multivariate modeling problem with relatively simple univariate regressions. In this paper, we begin to characterize the stationary distributions of iterative imputations and their statistical properties. More precisely, when the conditional models are compatible (defined in the text), we give a set of sufficient conditions under which the imputation distribution converges in tota…
If X and Y are real valued random variables such that the first moments of X, Y, and XY exist and the conditional expectation of Y given X is an affine function of X, then the intercept and slope of the conditional expectation equal the intercept and slope of the least squares linear regression function, even though Y may not have a finite second moment. As a consequence, the affine in X form of the conditional expectation and zero covariance imply mean independence.
In this article, by using composite asymmetric least squares (CALS) and empirical likelihood, we propose a two-step procedure to estimate the conditional value at risk (VaR) and conditional expected shortfall (ES) for the GARCH series. First, we perform asymmetric least square regressions at several significance levels to model the volatility structure and separate it from the innovation process in the GARCH model. Note that expectile can serve as a bond to make up the gap from VaR estimation to ES estimation because there exists a bijective mapping from expectiles to specific quantile, and ES…
A nearly unstable sequence of stationary spatial autoregressive processes is investigated, when the sum of the absolute values of the autoregressive coefficients tends to one. It is shown that after an appropriate norming the least squares estimator for these coefficients has a normal limit distribution. If none of the parameters equals zero than the typical rate of convergence is n.
This paper considers the problem of robust adaptive efficient estimating of a periodic function in a continuous time regression model with the dependent noises given by a general square integrable semimartingale with a conditionally Gaussian distribution. An example of such noise is the non-Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-Levy processes. An adaptive model selection procedure, based on the improved weighted least square estimates, is proposed. Under some conditions on the noise distribution, sharp oracle inequality for the robust risk has been proved and the robust efficiency of the model selection…
In order to estimate the conditional risk of a portfolio's return, two strategies can be advocated. A multivariate strategy requires estimating a dynamic model for the vector of risk factors, which is often challenging, when at all possible, for large portfolios. A univariate approach based on a dynamic model for the portfolio's return seems more attractive. However, when the combination of the individual returns is time varying, the portfolio's return series is typically non stationary which may invalidate statistical inference. An alternative approach consists in reconstituting a "virtual po…
The multi-index model is a simple yet powerful high-dimensional regression model which circumvents the curse of dimensionality assuming $ \mathbb{E} [ Y | X ] = g(A^\top X) $ for some unknown index space $A$ and link function $g$. In this paper we introduce a method for the estimation of the index space, and study the propagation error of an index space estimate in the regression of the link function. The proposed method approximates the index space by the span of linear regression slope coefficients computed over level sets of the data. Being based on ordinary least squares, our approach is e…
We provide conditions for the existence and the unicity of strictly stationary solutions of the usual Dynamic Conditional Correlation GARCH models (DCC-GARCH). The proof is based on Tweedie's (1988) criteria, after having rewritten DCC-GARCH models as nonlinear Markov chains. Moreover, we study the existence of their finite moments.
A method is proposed for estimating the potential function of a non-parametric estimator for stationary and isotropic pairwise interaction point process. The relation between a pair potential and the corresponding Papangelou conditional intensity is considered. Consistency and strong consistency of non-parametric estimate are proved in case of finite-range interaction potential.
The problem of the mean-square optimal estimation of the linear functionals which depend on the unknown values of a stochastic stationary sequence from observations of the sequence in special sets of points is considered. Formulas for calculating the mean-square error and the spectral characteristic of the optimal linear estimate of the functionals are derived under the condition of spectral certainty, where the spectral density of the sequence is exactly known. The minimax (robust) method of estimation is applied in the case where the spectral density of the sequence is not known exactly whil…
In this paper, we study the local constant and the local linear estimators of the conditional density function with right-censored data which exhibit some type of dependence. It is assumed that the observations form a stationary $α-$mixing sequence. The asymptotic normality of the two estimators is established, which combined with the condition that $\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow\infty}nh_nb_n=\infty$ implies the consistency of the two estimators and can be employed to construct confidence intervals for the conditional density function. The result on the local linear estimator of the conditional d…
We propose and analyze an algorithm for the sequential estimation of a conditional quantile in the context of real stochastic codes with vectorvalued inputs. Our algorithm is based on k-nearest neighbors smoothing within a Robbins-Monro estimator. We discuss the convergence of the algorithm under some conditions on the stochastic code. We provide non-asymptotic rates of convergence of the mean squared error and we discuss the tuning of the algorithm's parameters.
We consider the problem of estimating the slope parameter in functional linear regression, where scalar responses Y1,...,Yn are modeled in dependence of second order stationary random functions X1,...,Xn. An orthogonal series estimator of the functional slope parameter with additional thresholding in the Fourier domain is proposed and its performance is measured with respect to a wide range of weighted risks covering as examples the mean squared prediction error and the mean integrated squared error for derivative estimation. In this paper the minimax optimal rate of convergence of the estimat…
We describe the asymptotic behavior of the conditional least squares estimator of the offspring mean for subcritical strongly stationary Galton--Watson processes with regularly varying immigration with tail index $α\in (1,2)$. The limit law is the ratio of two dependent stable random variables with indices $α/2$ and $2α/3$, respectively, and it has a continuously differentiable density function. We use point process technique in the proofs.
We study asymptotic properties of some (essentially conditional least squares) parameter estimators for the subcritical Heston model based on discrete time observations derived from conditional least squares estimators of some modified parameters.
Conditional estimation given specific covariate values (i.e., local conditional estimation or functional estimation) is ubiquitously useful with applications in engineering, social and natural sciences. Existing data-driven non-parametric estimators mostly focus on structured homogeneous data (e.g., weakly independent and stationary data), thus they are sensitive to adversarial noise and may perform poorly under a low sample size. To alleviate these issues, we propose a new distributionally robust estimator that generates non-parametric local estimates by minimizing the worst-case conditional …
