In this paper we give necessary and sufficient trace conditions for an n by n matrix over any commutative and associative ring with unity to be a sum of k-th powers of matrices over that ring, where n,k are integers greater equal 2. We prove a discriminant criterion for every 2 by 2 matrix over an order R to be sums of cubes and fourth powers over R.
We also show that if q is a prime and n greater equal 2, then every n by n matrix over the ring of integers O, of a quadratic number field is a sum of q-th powers (of matrices) over O if and only if q is coprime to the discriminant of the quadratic number field.
In this paper, we formulate an analogue of Waring's problem for an algebraic group $G$. At the field level we consider a morphism of varieties $f\colon \mathbb{A}^1\to G$ and ask whether every element of $G(K)$ is the product of a bounded number of elements $f(\mathbb{A}^1(K)) = f(K)$. We give an affirmative answer when $G$ is unipotent and $K$ is a characteristic zero field which is not formally real. The idea is the same at the integral level, except one must work with schemes, and the question is whether every element in a finite index subgroup of $G(\mathcal{O})$ can be written as a produc…
Let $F$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we develop methods to represent arbitrary elements of $F[t]$ as sums of perfect $k$-th powers for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$ relatively prime to $p$. Using these methods we establish bounds on the necessary number of $k$-th powers in terms of the sum of the digits of $k$ in its base-$p$ expansion. As one particular application we prove that for any fixed prime $p>2$ and any $ε>0$ the number of $(p^r-1)$-th powers required is $\mathcal{O}\left(r^{(2+ε)\ln(p)}\right)$ as a function of $r$.
Kamke \cite{Kamke1921} solved an analog of Waring's problem with $n$th powers replaced by integer-valued polynomials. Larsen and Nguyen \cite{LN2019} explored the view of algebraic groups as a natural setting for Waring's problem. This paper applies the theory of polynomial maps and polynomial sequences in locally nilpotent groups developed in previous work \cite{Hu2020} to solve an analog of Waring's problem for the general discrete Heisenberg groups $H_{2n+1}(\mathbb{Z})$ for any integer $n\ge1$.
Denote by P(K, k) the members of the field K which are sums of kth powers of field elements, by P+(K, k) the set of members of K which are sums of kth powers of totally positive elements of K. We are interested in deciding whether or not there exist integers w(K, k) and g(K, k) such that: a in P(K, k) implies that a is the sum of at most w(K, k) kth powers; a in P+(K, k) implies that a is the sum of at most g(K, k) totally positive kth powers. We will show that if w(K, 2) is finite and provided that the kth powers are dense (in a sense described explicitly in theorem 3) in K, then w(K, k) is a…
We study singularity properties of word maps on semisimple algebraic groups and Lie algebras, generalizing the work of Aizenbud-Avni in the case of the commutator map. Given a word $w$ in a free Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}_{r}$, it induces a word map $φ_{w}:\mathfrak{g}^{r}\rightarrow\mathfrak{g}$ for every semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Given two words $w_{1}\in\mathcal{L}_{r_{1}}$ and $w_{2}\in\mathcal{L}_{r_{2}}$, we define and study the convolution of the corresponding word maps $φ_{w_{1}}*φ_{w_{2}}:=φ_{w_{1}}+φ_{w_{2}}:\mathfrak{g}^{r_{1}+r_{2}}\rightarrow\mathfrak{g}$. We show that …
In this paper, we shall be considering the Waring's problem for matrices. One version of the problem involves writing an $n \times n$ matrix over a commutative ring $R$ with unity as a sum of $k$-th powers of matrices over $R.$ This study is motivated by the interesting results of Carlitz, Newman, Vaserstein, Griffin, Krusemeyer, Richman etc. obtained earlier in this direction. The results are for the case $n \geq k \geq 2$ in terms of the trace of the matrix. For $n < k,$ it was shown by Katre, Garge that it is enough to work with the special case $n = 2$ and $k \geq 3.$ The cases $3 \leq k \…
Let $n$ and $m$ be positive integers such that $n<m$. In this paper we compute the density of rectangular unimodular $n$ by $m$ matrices over the ring of algebraic integers of a number field.
We discuss the use of matrices for providing sequences of rationals that approximate algebraic irrationalities. In particular, we study the regular representation of algebraic extensions, proving that ratios between two entries of the matrix of the regular representation converge to specific algebraic irrationalities. As an interesting special case, we focus on cubic irrationalities giving a generalization of the Khovanskii matrices for approximating cubic irrationalities. We discuss the quality of such approximations considering both rate of convergence and size of denominators. Moreover, we …
This paper is concerned with the generalized Euler polynomial matrix $\E^{(α)}(x)$ and the Euler matrix $\E$. Taking into account some properties of Euler polynomials and numbers, we deduce product formulae for $\E^{(α)}(x)$ and determine the inverse matrix of $\E$. We establish some explicit expressions for the Euler polynomial matrix $\E(x)$, which involving the generalized Pascal, Fibonacci and Lucas matrices, respectively. From these formulae we get some new interesting identities involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. Also, we provide some factorizations of the Euler polynomial matrix in …
We provide a simple way to add, multiply, invert, and take traces and norms of algebraic integers of a number field using integral matrices. With formulas for the integral bases of the ring of integers of at least a significant proportion of numbers fields, we obtain explicit formulas for these matrices and discuss their generalization. These results are useful in proving statements about the particular number fields they work in. We give a meaningful diagonalization that is helpful in this regard and can be used to define such matrices in general. The matrix identities provided suggest that c…
We consider conjugacy of integral matrices by elements in $\text{GL}_{n}(R)$ for certain rings $R$ with subring $\mathbb{Z}$. We note that a Hasse principal does not hold in the context of matrix conjugacy because matrices which are $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$-conjugate for all $p$ are not necessarily $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$-conjugate. By a theorem of Guralnick, we know that integral $n \times n$ matrices are $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$-conjugate for all primes $p$ if and only if they are conjugate by an element in $\text{GL}_{n}(E)$ for some algebraic integral extension $E$ of $\mathb…
We explore a paradigm which ties together seemingly disparate areas in number theory, additive combinatorics, and geometric combinatorics including the classical Waring problem, the Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem on squares in sets of integers with positive density, and the study of triangles (also called $2$-simplices) in finite fields. Among other results we show that if $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the finite field of odd order $q$, then every matrix in $Mat_d(\mathbb{F}_q), d \geq 2$ is the sum of a certain (finite) number of orthogonal matrices, this number depending only on $d$, the size of the matrix…
This paper deals with the computation of the rank and of some integer Smith forms of a series of sparse matrices arising in algebraic K-theory. The number of non zero entries in the considered matrices ranges from 8 to 37 millions. The largest rank computation took more than 35 days on 50 processors. We report on the actual algorithms we used to build the matrices, their link to the motivic cohomology and the linear algebra and parallelizations required to perform such huge computations. In particular, these results are part of the first computation of the cohomology of the linear group GL_7(Z…
We study the general problem of equidistribution of expanding translates of an analytic curve by an algebraic diagonal flow on the homogeneous space $G/Γ$ of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. We define two families of algebraic subvarieties of the associated partial flag variety $G/P$, which give the obstructions to non-divergence and equidistribution. We apply this to prove that for Lebesgue almost every point on an analytic curve in the space of $m\times n$ real matrices whose image is not contained in any subvariety coming from these two families, the Dirichlet's theorem on simultaneous Dio…
We study the diophantine exponent of analytic submanifolds of the space of m by n real matrices, answering questions of Beresnevich, Kleinbock and Margulis. We identify a family of algebraic obstructions to the extremality of such a submanifold, and give a formula for the exponent when the submanifold is algebraic and defined over the rationals. We then apply these results to the determination of the diophantine exponent of rational nilpotent Lie groups.
Motivated by questions in algebraic geometry, Yifeng Huang recently derived generating functions for counting mutually annihilating matrices and mutually annihilating nilpotent matrices over a finite field. We give a different derivation of his results using statistical properties of random partitions chosen from the Cohen-Lenstra measure.
