In this paper we construct a cover {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k of Z with odd moduli such that there are distinct primes p_1,...,p_k dividing 2^{n_1}-1,...,2^{n_k}-1 respectively. Using this cover we show that for any positive integer m divisible by none of 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 there exists an infinite arithmetic progression of positive odd integers the m-th powers of whose terms are never of the form $2^n\pm p^a$ with p a prime and a,n in {0,1,2,...}. We also construct another cover of Z with odd moduli and use it to prove that $x^2-F_{3n}/2$ has at least two distinct prime factors whenever n is a nonnegative integer and x=a (mod M), where {F_i}_{i\ge 0} is the Fibonacci sequence, and a and M are suitable positive integers having 80 decimal digits.
A famous unsolved conjecture of P. Erdos and J. L. Selfridge states that there does not exist a covering system {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k with the moduli n_1,...,n_k odd, distinct and greater than one. In this paper we show that if such a covering system {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k exists with n_1,...,n_k all square-free, then the least common multiple of n_1,...,n_k has at least 22 prime divisors.

We generalise Uspensky's theorem characterising eventual exact (e.e.) covers of the positive integers by homogeneous Beatty sequences, to e.e. m-covers, for any m \in \N, by homogeneous sequences with irrational moduli. We also consider inhomogeneous sequences, again with irrational moduli, and obtain a purely arithmetical characterisation of e.e. m-covers. This generalises a result of Graham for m = 1, but when m > 1 the arithmetical description is more complicated. Finally we speculate on how one might make sense of the notion of an exact m-cover when m is not an integer, and present a "frac…
Emmanuel Kowalski and William Sawin proved, using a deep independence result of Kloosterman sheaves, that the polygonal paths joining the partial sums of the normalized classical Kloosterman sums S(a,b0;p)/p^{1/2} converge in the sense of finite distributions to a specific random Fourier series, as a varies over (Z/pZ)^*, b0 is fixed in (Z/pz)* and p tends to infinity among the odd prime numbers. This article considers the case of S(a,b0;p^n)/p^{n/2}, as a varies over (Z/p^nZ)^*, b0 is fixed in (Z/p^nZ)^*, p tends to infinity among the odd prime numbers and n>=2 is a fixed integer. A convergen…
We study and compute an infinite family of Hurwitz spaces parameterizing covers of P_C branched at four points and deduce explicit regular S_n and A_n-extensions over Q(T) with totally real fibers.
In this paper, we study central values of the family of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we establish a positive proportion non-vanishing result for the corresponding $L$-values.
For any finite abelian group G, we study the moduli space of abelian $G$-covers of elliptic curves, in particular identifying the irreducible components of the moduli space. We prove that, in the totally ramified case, the moduli space has trivial rational Picard group, and it is birational to the moduli space M_{1,n}, where n is the number of branch points. In the particular case of moduli of bielliptic curves, we also prove that the boundary divisors are a basis of the rational Picard group of the admissible covers compactification of the moduli space. Our methods are entirely algebro-geomet…
In this paper we investigate the cohomological obstruction for the field of moduli of a $G$-cover to be a field of definition, in the case of local fields and covers with tame admissible reduction. This applies in particular to $p$-adic fields where $p$ does not divide the order of the group $G$. We give examples of $G$-covers with field of moduli $\QQ_p$ that cannot be defined over $\QQ_p$, for all primes $p>5$.
G. Ricotta and E. Royer (2018) have recently proved that the polygonal paths joining the partial sums of the normalized classical Kloosterman sums $S(a,b;p^n)/p^(n/2) converge in law in the Banach space of complex-valued continuous function on [0,1] to an explicit random Fourier series as (a,b) varies over (Z/p^nZ)^\times\times(Z/p^nZ)^\times, p tends to infinity among the odd prime numbers and n>=2 is a fixed integer. This is the analogue of the result obtained by E. Kowalski and W. Sawin (2016) in the prime moduli case. The purpose of this work is to prove a convergence law in this Banach sp…
We prove the q-aspect analogue of Heath-Brown's result on the twelfth power moment of the Riemann zeta function for Dirichlet L-functions to odd prime power moduli. Our results rely on the p-adic method of stationary phase for sums of products and complement Nunes' bound for smooth square-free moduli.
In this paper, we study the $k$-th moment of central values of the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generlized Riemann hypothesis, we establish sharp upper and lower bounds for the $k$-th power moment of these $L$-values for all real $k \geq 0$.
We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell$ covers of the projective line in characteristic $p$ for distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. The main result is about the intersection of the $p$-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell=3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic $p$, with every genus $g$, signature type $(r,s)$ and $p$-rank $f$ satisfying the clear necessary conditions.
A simple geometric construction on the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of curves of genus $0$ with $n$ ordered marked points is described which gives a common framework for many irrationality proofs for zeta values. This construction yields Apéry's approximations to $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, and for larger $n$, an infinite family of small linear forms in multiple zeta values with an interesting algebraic structure. It also contains a generalisation of the linear forms used by Ball and Rivoal to prove that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational.
We examine in detail the stable reduction of Galois covers of the projective line over a complete discrete valuation field of mixed characteristic (0, p), where G has a cyclic p-Sylow subgroup of order p^n. If G is further assumed to be p-solvable (i.e., G has no nonabelian simple composition factors with order divisible by p), we obtain the following consequence: Suppose f: Y --> P^1 is a three-point G-Galois cover defined over the complex numbers. Then the nth higher ramification groups above p for the upper numbering of the (Galois closure of the) extension K/Q vanish, where K is the field …
It is proved that if the least modulus of a distinct covering system is 4, its largest modulus is at least 60; also if the least modulus is 3, the LCM of the moduli is at least 120; finally, if the least modulus is 4, the LCM of the moduli is at least 360. The constants 60, 120, and 360 can not be replaced by larger constants.
A covering system of the integers is a finite collection of modular residue classes $\{a_m \bmod{m}\}_{m \in S}$ whose union is all integers. Given a finite set $S$ of moduli, it is often difficult to tell whether there is a choice of residues modulo elements of $S$ covering the integers. Hough has shown that if the smallest modulus in $S$ is at least $10^{16}$, then there is none. However, the question of whether there is a covering of the integers with all odd moduli remains open. We consider multiplicative restrictions on the set of moduli to generalize Hough's negative solution to the mini…
We construct the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces with level $N$ structure over $\mathbb{Z}[1/N]$. As an application we show that, for $N$ large enough, the stack of smooth hypersurfaces over $\mathbb{Z}[1/N]$ is uniformisable by a smooth affine scheme. To prove our results, we use the Lefschetz trace formula to show that automorphisms of smooth hypersurfaces act faithfully on their cohomology. We also prove a global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic threefolds over fields of odd characteristic.
It is one of the wonderful ``coincidences'' of the theory of finite groups that the simple group G of order 25920 arises as both a symplectic group in characteristic 3 and a unitary group in characteristic 2. These two realizations of G yield two G-covers of the moduli space of configurations of six points on the projective line modulo PGL_2, via the 3- and 2-torsion of the Jacobians of the double and triple cyclic covers of P^1 branched at those six points. Remarkably these two covers are isomorphic. This was proved over C by transcendental methods by Hunt and Weintraub. We give an algebraic …
