It has been recently shown that nonparametric estimators of the additive regression function could be obtained in the presence of right censoring by coupling the marginal integration method with initial kernel-type Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted estimators of the multivariate regression function \citeDebbarhViallon3. In this paper, we get the exact rate of strong uniform consistency for such estimators. Our uniform limit laws especially lead to the construction of asymptotic simultaneous 100% confidence bands for the true regression function.
In this paper, we establish uniform-in-bandwidth limit laws of the logarithm for nonparametric Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted (I.P.C.W.) estimators of the multivariate regression function under random censorship. A similar result is deduced for estimators of the conditional distribution function. The uniform-in-bandwidth consistency for estimators of the conditional density and the conditional hazard rate functions are also derived from our main result. Moreover, the logarithm laws we establish are shown to yield almost sure simultaneous asymptotic confidence bands for the functions…
In contrast to the popular Cox model which presents a multiplicative covariate effect specification on the time to event hazards, the semiparametric additive risks model (ARM) offers an attractive additive specification, allowing for direct assessment of the changes or the differences in the hazard function for changing value of the covariates. The ARM is a flexible model, allowing the estimation of both time-independent and time-varying covariates. It has a nonparametric component and a regression component identified by a finite-dimensional parameter. This chapter presents an efficient appro…
In this paper, we consider the product-limit quantile estimator of an unknown quantile function under a censored dependent model. This is a parallel problem to the estimation of the unknown distribution function by the product-limit estimator under the same model. Simultaneous strong Gaussian approximations of the product-limit process and product-limit quantile process are constructed with rate $O((\log n)^{-λ})$ for some $λ>0,$. The strong Gaussian approximation of the product-limit process is then applied to derive the laws of the iterated logarithm for product-limit process.
Based on a data set obtained in a dental longitudinal study, conducted in Flanders (Belgium), the joint time to caries distribution of permanent first molars was modeled as a function of covariates. This involves an analysis of multivariate continuous doubly-interval-censored data since: (i) the emergence time of a tooth and the time it experiences caries were recorded yearly, and (ii) events on teeth of the same child are dependent. To model the joint distribution of the emergence times and the times to caries, we propose a dependent Bayesian semiparametric model. A major feature of the propo…
We study explained variation under the additive hazards regression model for right-censored data. We consider different approaches for developing such a measure, and focus on one that estimates the proportion of variation in the failure time explained by the covariates. We study the properties of the measure both analytically, and through extensive simulations. We apply the measure to a well-known survival data set as well as the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database for prediction of mortality in early-stage prostate cancer patients using high dimensional …
Individuals often respond differently to identical treatments, and characterizing such variability in treatment response is an important aim in the practice of personalized medicine. In this article, we describe a non-parametric accelerated failure time model that can be used to analyze heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE) when patient outcomes are time-to-event. By utilizing Bayesian additive regression trees and a mean-constrained Dirichlet process mixture model, our approach offers a flexible model for the regression function while placing few restrictions on the baseline hazard. Our non-p…
We propose inference procedures for general nonparametric factorial survival designs with possibly right-censored data. Similar to additive Aalen models, null hypotheses are formulated in terms of cumulative hazards. Thereby, deviations are measured in terms of quadratic forms in Nelson-Aalen-type integrals. Different to existing approaches this allows to work without restrictive model assumptions as proportional hazards. In particular, crossing survival or hazard curves can be detected without a significant loss of power. For a distribution-free application of the method, a permutation strate…
Fertility plans, measured by the number of planned children, have been found to be affected by education and family background via complex tail dependencies. This challenge was previously met with the use of non-parametric jittering approaches. This paper shows how a novel generalized additive model based on a discrete Weibull distribution provides partial effects of the covariates on fertility plans which are comparable to jittering, without the inherent drawback of crossing conditional quantiles. The model has some additional desirable features: both over- and under-dispersed data can be mod…
In this paper, we are concerned with nonparametric estimation of the multivariate regression function in the presence of right censored data. More precisely, we propose a statistic that is shown to be asymptotically normally distributed under the additive assumption, and that could be used to test for additivity in the censored regression setting.
We establish asymptotic normality for estimators of the additive regression components under random censorship. To build our estimators, we couple the marginal integration method (Newey (1994)) with an initial Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted estimator of the multivariate censored regression function introduced by Carbonez et al. (1995) and Kohler et al. (2002). Asymptotic confidence bands are derived from our result.
We consider a general high-dimensional additive hazard model in a non-asymptotic setting, including regression for censored-data. In this context, we consider a Lasso estimator with a fully data-driven $\ell_1$ penalization, which is tuned for the estimation problem at hand. We prove sharp oracle inequalities for this estimator. Our analysis involves a new "data-driven" Bernstein's inequality, that is of independent interest, where the predictable variation is replaced by the optional variation.
In this paper the regression discontinuity design is adapted to the survival analysis setting with right-censored data, studied in an intensity based counting process framework. In particular, a local polynomial regression version of the Aalen additive hazards estimator is introduced as an estimator of the difference between two covariate dependent cumulative hazard rate functions. Large-sample theory for this estimator is developed, including confidence intervals that take into account the uncertainty associated with bias correction. As is standard in the causality literature, the models and …
Current status data are commonly encountered in medical and epidemiological studies in which the failure time for study units is the outcome variable of interest. Data of this form are characterized by the fact that the failure time is not directly observed but rather is known relative to an observation time; i.e., the failure times are either left- or right-censored. Due to its structure, the analysis of such data can be challenging. To circumvent these challenges and to provide for a flexible modeling construct which can be used to analyze current status data, herein, a partially linear addi…
We study the problem of nonparametric estimation of density functions with a product form on the domain $\triangle=\{( x_1, \ldots, x_d)\in \mathbb{R}^d, 0\leq x_1\leq \dots \leq x_d \leq 1\}$. Such densities appear in the random truncation model as the joint density function of observations. They are also obtained as maximum entropy distributions of order statistics with given marginals. We propose an estimation method based on the approximation of the logarithm of the density by a carefully chosen family of basis functions. We show that the method achieves a fast convergence rate in probabil…
High-dimensional sparse modeling with censored survival data is of great practical importance, as exemplified by modern applications in high-throughput genomic data analysis and credit risk analysis. In this article, we propose a class of regularization methods for simultaneous variable selection and estimation in the additive hazards model, by combining the nonconcave penalized likelihood approach and the pseudoscore method. In a high-dimensional setting where the dimensionality can grow fast, polynomially or nonpolynomially, with the sample size, we establish the weak oracle property and ora…
We discuss the role of misspecification and censoring on Bayesian model selection in the contexts of right-censored survival and concave log-likelihood regression. Misspecification includes wrongly assuming the censoring mechanism to be non-informative. Emphasis is placed on additive accelerated failure time, Cox proportional hazards and probit models. We offer a theoretical treatment that includes local and non-local priors, and a general non-linear effect decomposition to improve power-sparsity trade-offs. We discuss a fundamental question: what solution can one hope to obtain when (inevitab…
