We show that the Hodge and pole order filtrations are globally different for sufficiently general singular projective hypersurfaces in case the degree is 3 or 4 assuming the dimension of the projective space is at least 5 or 3 respectively. We then study an algebraic formula for the global Hodge filtration in the ordinary double point case conjectured by the third named author. This is more explicit and easier to calculate than the previous one in this case. We prove a variant of it under the assumption that the image of the singular points by the $e$-fold Veronese embedding consists of linearly independent points, where $e$ is determined only by the dimension and the degree. In particular, the original conjecture is true in case the above condition is satisfied for $e=1$.
We use the Clemens-Griffiths method to construct smooth projective threefolds, over any field $k$ admitting a separable quadratic extension, that are $k$-unirational and $\bar{k}$-rational but not $k$-rational. When $k=\mathbb{R}$, we can moreover ensure that their real locus is diffeomorphic to the real locus of a smooth projective $\mathbb{R}$-rational variety and that all their unramified cohomology groups are trivial.
We prove that the degree k unramified cohomology with torsion coefficients of a smooth complex projective variety X with small CH_0(X) has a filtration of length [k/2], whose first piece is the torsion part of the quotient of the degree k+1 integral singular cohomology by its coniveau 2 subgroup, and whose next graded piece is controlled by the Griffiths group Griff^{k/2+1}(X) when k is even and is related to the higher Chow group CH^{(k+3)/2}(X, 1) when k is odd. The first piece is a generalization of the Artin-Mumford invariant (k=2) and the Colliot-Thelene-Voisin invariant (k=3). We also gi…
We use the universal generation of algebraic cycles to relate (stable) rationality to the integral Hodge conjecture. We show that the Chow group of 1-cycles on a cubic hypersurface is universally generated by lines. Applications are mainly in cubic hypersurfaces of low dimensions. For example, we show that if a generic cubic fourfold is stably rational then the Beauville--Bogomolov form on its variety of lines, viewed as an integral Hodge class on the self product of its variety of lines, is algebraic. In dimension $3$ and $5$, we relate stable rationality with the geometry of the associated i…
Let $V$ be a smooth, projective, rationally connected variety, defined over a number field $k$, and let $Z\subset V$ be a closed subset of codimension at least two. In this paper, for certain choices of $V$, we prove that the set of $Z$-integral points is potentially Zariski dense, in the sense that there is a finite extension $K$ of $k$ such that the set of points $P\in V(K)$ that are $Z$-integral is Zariski dense in $V$. This gives a positive answer to a question of Hassett and Tschinkel from 2001.
We consider a rational elliptic surface with a relatively minimal fibration. We compute the number of integral sections in the above rational elliptic surface. As an application, we obtain an estimate of polynomial solutions of some equations.
We explain an algorithm to calculate Arthur's weighted orbital integral in terms of the number of rational points on the fundamental domain of the associated affine Springer fiber. The strategy is to count the number of rational points of the truncated affine Springer fibers in two ways: by the Arthur-Kottwitz reduction and by the Harder-Narasimhan reduction. A comparison of results obtained from these two approaches gives us recurrence relations between the number of rational points on the fundamental domains of the affine Springer fibers and Arthur's weighted orbital integrals. As an example…
We show that for a variety which admits a quasi-finite period map, finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of $S$-integral points implies finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of points over all $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domains of characteristic zero. Our proofs rely on foundational results in Hodge theory due to Deligne, Griffiths, and Schmid, and Bakker-Brunebarbe-Tsimerman. We give straightforward applications to Shimura varieties, locally symmetric varieties, the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces in projective space, and the moduli of smooth divisors in an abelian variet…
Despite the failure of the integral Hodge conjecture, we show that the rational Hodge conjecture implies an integral version (modulo torsion) of the absolute Hodge conjecture.
We show that, for any fixed weight, there is a natural system of Hodge sheaves, whose Higgs field has no poles, arising from a flat projective family of varieties parametrized by a regular complex base scheme, extending the analogous classical result for smooth projective families due to Griffiths. As an application, based on positivity of direct image sheaves, we establish a criterion for base spaces of rational Gorenstein families to be of general type. A key component of our arguments is centered around the construction of derived categorical objects generalizing relative logarithmic forms …
