The $k$-ellipse is the plane algebraic curve consisting of all points whose sum of distances from $k$ given points is a fixed number. The polynomial equation defining the $k$-ellipse has degree $2^k$ if $k$ is odd and degree $2^k{-}\binom{k}{k/2}$ if $k$ is even. We express this polynomial equation as the determinant of a symmetric matrix of linear polynomials. Our representation extends to weighted $k$-ellipses and $k$-ellipsoids in arbitrary dimensions, and it leads to new geometric applications of semidefinite programming.
Spectrahedra are sets defined by linear matrix inequalities. Projections of spectrahedra are called semidefinitely representable sets. Both kinds of sets are of practical use in polynomial optimization, since they occur as feasible sets in semidefinite programming. There are several recent results on the question which sets are semidefinite representable. So far, all results focus on the case of closed sets. In this work we develop a new method to prove semidefinite representability of sets which are not closed. For example, the interior of a semidefinite representable set is shown to be semid…
A set is called semidefinite representable or semidefinite programming (SDP) representable if it can be represented as the projection of a higher dimensional set which is represented by some Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). This paper discuss the semidefinite representability conditions for convex sets of the form S_D(f) = {x \in D: f(x) >= 0}. Here D={x\in R^n: g_1(x) >= 0, ..., g_m(x) >= 0} is a convex domain defined by some "nice" concave polynomials g_i(x) (they satisfy certain concavity certificates), and f(x) is a polynomial or rational function. When f(x) is concave over \mc{D}, we prove…
We study sum-of-squares representations of symmetric univariate real matrix polynomials that are positive semidefinite along the real line. We give a new proof of the fact that every positive semidefinite univariate matrix polynomial of size $n\times n$ can be written as a sum of squares $M=Q^TQ$, where $Q$ has size $(n+1)\times n$, which was recently proved by Blekherman-Plaumann-Sinn-Vinzant. Our new approach using the theory of quadratic forms allows us to prove the conjecture made by these authors that these minimal representations $M=Q^TQ$ are generically in one-to-one correspondence with…
We show that the closed convex hull of any one-dimensional semi-algebraic subset of R^n has a semidefinite representation, meaning that it can be written as a linear projection of the solution set of some linear matrix inequality. This is proved by an application of the moment relaxation method. Given a nonsingular affine real algebraic curve C and a compact semialgebraic subset K of its R-points, the preordering P(K) of all regular functions on C that are nonnegative on K is known to be finitely generated. We prove that P(K) is stable, meaning that uniform degree bounds exist for weighted sum…
Let $S =\{x\in \re^n: g_1(x)\geq 0, ..., g_m(x)\geq 0\}$ be a semialgebraic set defined by multivariate polynomials $g_i(x)$. Assume $S$ is convex, compact and has nonempty interior. Let $S_i =\{x\in \re^n: g_i(x)\geq 0\}$, and $\bdS$ (resp. $\bdS_i$) be the boundary of $S$ (resp. $S_i$). This paper discusses whether $S$ can be represented as the projection of some LMI representable set. Such $S$ is called semidefinite representable or SDP representable. The contributions of this paper: {\bf (i)} Assume $g_i(x)$ are all concave on $S$. If the positive definite Lagrange Hessian (PDLH) condition…
In this paper, we investigate the complexity of the central path of semidefinite optimization through the lens of real algebraic geometry. To that end, we propose an algorithm to compute real univariate representations describing the central path and its limit point, where the limit point is described by taking the limit of central solutions, as bounded points in the field of algebraic Puiseux series. As a result, we derive an upper bound $2^{O(m+n^2)}$ on the degree of the Zariski closure of the central path, when $μ$ is sufficiently small, and for the complexity of describing the limit point…
A set $S\subseteq \re^n$ is called to be {\it Semidefinite (SDP)} representable if $S$ equals the projection of a set in higher dimensional space which is describable by some Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). The contributions of this paper are: (i) For bounded SDP representable sets $W_1,...,W_m$, we give an explicit construction of an SDP representation for $\cv{\cup_{k=1}^mW_k}$. This provides a technique for building global SDP representations from the local ones. (ii) For the SDP representability of a compact convex semialgebraic set $S$, we prove sufficient condition: the boundary $\bdS$ i…
The problem of characterizing a real polynomial $f$ as a sum of squares of polynomials on a real algebraic variety $V$ dates back to the pioneering work of Hilbert in [Mathematische Annalen 32.3 (1888): 342-350]. In this paper, we investigate this problem with a focus on cases where the real zeros of $f$ on $V$ are singular points of $V$. By using optimality conditions and irreducible decomposition, we provide a positive answer to the following essential question of polynomial optimization: Are there always exact semidefinite programs to compute the minimum value attained by a given polynomial…
Convex algebraic geometry concerns the interplay between optimization theory and real algebraic geometry. Its objects of study include convex semialgebraic sets that arise in semidefinite programming and from sums of squares. This article compares three notions of duality that are relevant in these contexts: duality of convex bodies, duality of projective varieties, and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions derived from Lagrange duality. We show that the optimal value of a polynomial program is an algebraic function whose minimal polynomial is expressed by the hypersurface projectively dual to the…
A celebrated result by Hilbert says that every real nonnegative ternary quartic is a sum of three squares. We show more generally that every nonnegative quadratic form on a real projective variety $X$ of minimal degree is a sum of $\dim(X)+1$ squares of linear forms. This strengthens one direction of a recent result due to Blekherman, Smith, and Velasco. Our upper bound is the best possible, and it implies the existence of low-rank factorizations of positive semidefinite bivariate matrix polynomials and representations of biforms as sums of few squares. We determine the number of equivalence c…
Let $V$ be a real algebraic variety with singularities and $f$ be a real polynomial non-negative on $V$. Assume that the regular locus of $V$ is dense in $V$ by the usual topology. Using Hironaka's resolution of singularities and Demmel--Nie--Powers' Nichtnegativstellensatz, we obtain a sum of squares-based representation that characterizes the non-negativity of $f$ on $V$. This representation allows us to build up exact semidefinite relaxations for polynomial optimization problems whose optimal solutions are possibly singularities of the constraint sets.
We review several (and provide new) results on the theory of moments, sums of squares and basic semi-algebraic sets when convexity is present. In particular, we show that under convexity, the hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations for polynomial optimization simplifies and has finite convergence, a highly desirable feature as convex problems are in principle easier to solve. In addition, if a basic semi-algebraic set K is convex but its defining polynomials are not, we provide a certificate of convexity if a sufficient (and almost necessary) condition is satified. This condition can be checked …
We consider real polynomials in finitely many variables. Let the variables consist of finitely many blocks that are allowed to overlap in a certain way. Let the solution set of a finite system of polynomial inequalities be given where each inequality involves only variables of one block. We investigate polynomials that are positive on such a set and sparse in the sense that each monomial involves only variables of one block. In particular, we derive a short and direct proof for Lasserre's theorem of the existence of sums of squares certificates respecting the block structure. The motivation fo…
We utilize the same technique as in [arXiv:2205.04254 (2022)] to provide some representations of polynomials non-negative on a basic semi-algebraic set, defined by polynomial inequalities, under more general conditions. Based on each representation, we obtain semidefinite programs which return a sequence of values that finitely converges to the optimal value of a given polynomial optimization problem under generic assumption. Consequently, we can compute exactly the minimal value of any polynomial over a basic convex semi-algebraic set which is defined by the inequalities of concave polynomial…
Let $f,g_1,\dots,g_m$ be polynomials of degree at most $d$ with real coefficients in a vector of variables $x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)$. Assume that $f$ is non-negative on a basic semi-algebraic set $S$ defined by polynomial inequalities $g_j(x)\ge 0$, for $j=1,\dots,m$. Our previous work [arXiv:2205.04254 (2022)] has stated several representations of $f$ based on the Fritz John conditions. This paper provides some explicit degree bounds depending on $n$, $m$, and $d$ for these representations. In application to polynomial optimization, we obtain explicit rates of finite convergence of the hierarchies …
Representations of nonnegative polynomials as sums of squares are central to real algebraic geometry and the subject of active research. The sum-of-squares representations of a given polynomial are parametrized by the convex body of positive semidefinite Gram matrices, called the Gram spectrahedron. This is a fundamental object in polynomial optimization and convex algebraic geometry. We summarize results on sums of squares that fit naturally into the context of Gram spectrahedra, present some new results, and highlight related open questions. We discuss sum-of-squares representations of minim…
