We show that every fusion system on a p-group S is equal to the fusion system associated to a discrete group G with the property that every p-subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of S.
We prove that the Díaz-Park's sharpness conjecture holds for saturated fusion systems defined on a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the group ${\rm G}_2(p)$, for $p\geq 5$.
We prove that an isomorphism between saturated fusion systems over the same finite p-group is detected on the elementary abelian subgroups of the hyperfocal subgroup if p is odd, and on the abelian subgroups of the hyperfocal subgroup of exponent at most 4 if p = 2. For odd p, this has implications for mod p group cohomology.
In this paper, we find some exotic fusion systems which have non-trivial strongly closed subgroups, and we prove these fusion systems are also not realizable by p-blocks of finite groups.
We build a spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of a fusion system with a strongly closed subgroup. This spectral sequence is related to the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence and coincides with it for the case of an extension of groups. Nevertheless, the new spectral sequence applies to more general situations like finite simple groups with a strongly closed subgroup and exotic fusion systems with a strongly closed subgroup. We prove an analogue of a result of Stallings in the context of fusion preserving homomorphisms and deduce Tate's p-nilpotency criterion as a corollary.
We determine, for $p$ odd, all saturated fusion systems on a Sylow $p$-subgroup $S$ of the unitary group $SU_4(p)$ and we prove that they are all realizable by finite groups. In particular, we prove that $S$ does not support any exotic fusion systems.
For $S$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the group $\mathrm{G}_2(p)$ for $p$ odd, up to isomorphism of fusion systems, we determine all saturated fusion systems $\mathcal{F}$ on $S$ with $O_p(\mathcal{F})=1$. For $p \ne 7$, all such fusion systems are realized by finite groups whereas for $p=7$ there are $29$ saturated fusion systems of which $27$ are exotic.
For any prime $p$ and $S$ a $p$-group isomorphic to a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $\mathrm{G}_2(p^n)$ or $\mathrm{PSU}_4(p^n)$ with $n\in\mathbb{N}$, we determine all saturated fusion systems supported on $S$ up to isomorphism.
We give another proof of an observation of Thévenaz \cite{T1989} and present a fusion system version of it. Namely, for a saturated fusion system $\CF$ on a finite $p$-group $S$, we show that the number of the $\CF$-conjugacy classes of cyclic subgroups of $S$ is equal to the rank of certain square matrices of numbers of orbits, coming from characteristic bisets, the characteristic idempotent and finite groups realizing the fusion system $\CF$ as in our previous work \cite{P2010}.
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $S$ be a $p$-group with a unique elementary abelian subgroup $A$ of index $p$. We classify the simple fusion systems over all such groups $S$ in which $A$ is essential. The resulting list, which depends on the classification of finite simple groups, includes a large variety of new, exotic simple fusion systems.
For any prime $p$ and $S$ a $p$-group isomorphic to a Sylow $p$-subgroup of a rank $2$ simple group of Lie type in characteristic $p$, we determine all saturated fusion systems supported on $S$ up to isomorphism.
We show that the abelian monoid of isomorphism classes of G-stable finite S-sets is free for a finite group G with Sylow p-subgroup S; here a finite S-set is called G-stable if it has isomorphic restrictions to G-conjugate subgroups of S. These G-stable S-sets are of interest, e.g., in homotopy theory. We prove freeness by constructing an explicit (but somewhat non-obvious) basis, whose elements are in one-to-one correspondence with the G-conjugacy classes of subgroups in S. As a central tool of independent interest, we give a detailed description of the embedding of the Burnside ring for a sa…
We finish the classification, begun in two earlier papers, of all simple fusion systems over finite nonabelian $p$-groups with an abelian subgroup of index $p$. In particular, this gives many new examples illustrating the enormous variety of exotic examples that can arise. In addition, we classify all simple fusion systems over infinite nonabelian discrete $p$-toral groups with an abelian subgroup of index $p$. In all of these cases (finite or infinite), we reduce the problem to one of listing all $\mathbb{F}_pG$-modules (for $G$ finite) satisfying certain conditions: a problem which was solve…
The transporter systems of Oliver and Ventura and the localities of Chermak are classes of algebraic structures that model the $p$-local structures of finite groups. Other than the transporter categories and localities of finite groups, important examples include centric, quasicentric, and subcentric linking systems for saturated fusion systems. These examples are however not defined in general on the full collection of subgroups of the Sylow group. We study here punctured groups, a short name for transporter systems or localities on the collection of nonidentity subgroups of a finite $p$-grou…
A p-local finite group consists of a finite p-group S, together with a pair of categories which encode ``conjugacy'' relations among subgroups of S, and which are modelled on the fusion in a Sylow p-subgroup of a finite group. It contains enough information to define a classifying space which has many of the same properties as p-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. In this paper, we examine which subgroups control this structure. More precisely, we prove that the question of whether an abstract fusion system F over a finite p-group S is saturated can be determined by just looking at …
As a counterpart for the prime 2 to Glauberman's $ZJ$-theorem, Stellmacher proves that any nontrivial 2-group $S$ has a nontrivial characteristic subgroup $W(S)$ with the following property. For any finite $Σ_4$-free group $G$, with $S$ a Sylow 2-subgroup of $G$ and with $O_2(G)$ self-centralizing, the subgroup $W(S)$ is normal in $G$. We generalize Stellmacher's result to fusion systems. A similar construction of $W(S)$ can be done for odd primes and gives rise to a Glauberman functor.
We classify fusion systems $\mathcal{F}$ in which $O_p(\mathcal{F})=\{1\}$, and there are two $\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathcal{F}}(S)$-invariant essential subgroups whose normalizer systems generate $\mathcal{F}$. We employ the amalgam method and, as a bonus, obtain $p$-local characterizations of certain rank $2$ group amalgams whose parabolic subgroups involve strongly $p$-embedded subgroups.
Let G be group; a finite p-subgroup S of G is a Sylow p-subgroup if every finite p-subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of S. In this paper, we examine the relations between the fusion system over S which is given by conjugation in G and a certain chamber system C, on which G acts chamber transitively with chamber stabilizer N_G(S). Next, we introduce the notion of a fusion system with a parabolic family and we show that a chamber system can be associated to such a fusion system. We determine some conditions the chamber system has to fulfill in order to assure the saturation of the underly…
Suppose $\mathcal{E}$ is a normal subsystem of a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ over $S$. If $X\leq S$ is fully $\mathcal{F}$-normalized, then Aschbacher defined a normal subsystem $N_{\mathcal{E}}(X)$ of $N_{\mathcal{F}}(X)$. In this short note we revisit and generalize this result using the theory of localities. Our more general approach leads in particular to a normal subsystem $C_{\mathcal{E}}(X)$ of $C_{\mathcal{F}}(X)$ for every $X\leq S$ which is fully $\mathcal{F}$-centralized.
We prove, for certain pairs G,G of finite groups of Lie type, that the p-fusion systems for G and G' are equivalent. In other words, there is an isomorphism between a Sylow p-subgroup of G and one of G' which preserves p-fusion. This occurs, for example, when G=H(q) and G'=H(q') for a simple Lie type H, and q and q' are prime powers, both prime to p, which generate the same closed subgroup of the p-adic units. Our proof uses homotopy theoretic properties of the p-completed classifying spaces of G and G', and we know of no purely algebraic proof of this result.
For a prime number $p$, a finite $p$-group of order $p^n$ has maximal class if it has nilpotency class $n-1$. Here we examine saturated fusion systems on maximal class $p$-groups and, in particular, we describe all the reduFor a prime number $p$, a finite $p$-group of order $p^n$ has maximal class if and only if it has nilpotency class $n-1$. Here we examine saturated fusion systems $\mathcal F$ on maximal class $p$-groups $S$ of order at least $p^4$. The Alperin-Goldschmidt Theorem for saturated fusion systems yields that $\mathcal F$ is entirely determined by the $\mathcal F$-automorphisms o…
The aim of this paper is to generalise the notion of p-stability to fusion systems. We study the question how Qd(p) is involved in finite simple groups. We show that with a single exception a simple group involving Qd(p) has a subgroup isomorphic to either Qd(p) or a central extension of it by a cyclic group of order p. We define p-stability for fusion systems, characterise some of its properties and prove a fusion theoretic version of Thomson's maximal subgroup theorem. We introduce the notion of section p-stability both for groups and fusion systems and prove a version of Glauberman's theore…
In this paper, we calculate the numbers of irreducible ordinary characters and irreducible Brauer characters in a block of a finite group $G$, whose associated fusion system over a 2-subgroup $P$ of $G$ (which is a defect group of the block) has the hyperfocal subgroup $\mathbb Z_{2^n}\times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ for some $n\geq 2$, when the block is controlled by the normalizer $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of $P$, or when the block is not controlled by $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of the unique essential subgroup in the fusion s…
Linking systems are crucial for studying the homotopy theory of fusion systems, but are also of interest from an algebraic point of view. We propose a definition of a linking system associated to a saturated fusion system which is more general than the one currently in the literature and thus allows a more flexible choice of objects of linking systems. More precisely, we define subcentric subgroups of fusion systems in a way that every quasicentric subgroup of a saturated fusion system is subcentric. Whereas the objects of linking systems in the current definition are always quasicentric, the …
Glauberman's $Z^*$-theorem and analogous statements for odd primes show that, for any prime $p$ and any finite group $G$ with Sylow $p$-subgroup $S$, the centre of $G/O_{p^\prime}(G)$ is determined by the fusion system $\mathcal{F}_S(G)$. Building on these results we show a statement that seems a priori more general: For any normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ with $O_{p^\prime}(H)=1$, the centralizer $C_S(H)$ is expressed in terms of the fusion system $\mathcal{F}_S(H)$ and its normal subsystem induced by $H$.
For a prime $p$, we describe a protocol for handling a specific type of fusion system on a $p$-group by computer. These fusion systems contain all saturated fusion systems. This framework allows us to computationally determine whether or not two subgroups are conjugate in the fusion system for example. We describe a generation procedure for automizers of every subgroup of the $p$-group. This allows a computational check of saturation. These procedures have been implemented using MAGMA. We describe a program to search for saturated fusion systems $\mathcal{F}$ on $p$-groups with $O_p(\mathcal{F…
Let p be a prime number and G a finite group of order divisible by p. Quillen showed that the Brown poset of nonidentity p-subgroups of G is homotopy equivalent to its subposet of nonidentity elementary abelian subgroups. We show here that a similar statement holds for the fusion category of nonidentity p-subgroups of G. Other categories of p-subgroups of G are also considered.
We prove, when $S$ is a $2$-group of order at most $2^9$, that each reduced fusion system over $S$ is the fusion system of a finite simple group and is tame. It then follows that each saturated fusion system over a $2$-group of order at most $2^9$ is realizable. What is most interesting about this result is the method of proof: we show that among $2$-groups with order in this range, the ones which can be Sylow $2$-subgroups of finite simple groups are almost completely determined by criteria based on Bender's classification of groups with strongly $2$-embedded subgroups.
For a finite abelian $p$-group $A$ and a subgroup $Γ\le\text{Aut}(A)$, we say that the pair $(Γ,A)$ is fusion realizable if there is a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ over a finite $p$-group $S\ge A$ such that $C_S(A)=A$, $\textrm{Aut}_{\mathcal{F}}(A)=Γ$ as subgroups of $\text{Aut}(A)$, and $A$ is not normal in $\mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we develop tools to show that certain representations are not fusion realizable in this sense. For example, we show, for $p=2$ or $3$ and $Γ$ one of the Mathieu groups, that the only $\mathbb{F}_pΓ$-modules that are fusion realizable (up to extension…
We consider an amalgam of groups constructed from fusion systems for different odd primes p and q. This amalgam contains a self-normalizing cyclic subgroup of order pq and isolated elements of order p and q.
A family of exotic fusion systems generalizing the group fusion systems on Sylow $p$-subgroups of $\mathrm{G}_2(p^a)$ and $\mathrm{Sp}_4(p^a)$ is constructed.
We study saturated fusion systems on $p$-groups having sectional rank $3$ for all odd primes $p$. For $p\geq 5$, we obtain a complete classification of the ones that do not have any non-trivial normal $p$-subgroups.
We revisit the notion of a product of a normal subsystem with a $p$-subgroup as defined by Aschbacher. In particular, we give a previously unknown, more transparent construction.
In this paper, important concepts from finite group theory are translated to localities, in particular to linking localities. Here localities are group-like structures associated to fusion systems which were introduced by Chermak. Linking localities (by Chermak also called proper localities) are special kinds of localities which correspond to linking systems. Thus they contain the algebraic information that is needed to study $p$-completed classifying spaces of fusion systems as generalizations of $p$-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. Because of the group-like nature of localities…
We reduce the classification of finite subgroups in compact Lie groups to that of quasi-simple ones, prove the number of conjugacy classes is finite and each cojugacy class is Zariski closed in mapping space, and classify "strongly controlling fusions" symmetric pairs.
An $\mathcal{F}$-essential subgroup is called a pearl if it is either elementary abelian of order $p^2$ or non-abelian of order $p^3$. In this paper we start the investigation of fusion systems containing pearls: we determine a bound for the order of $p$-groups containing pearls and we classify the saturated fusion systems on $p$-groups containing pearls and having sectional rank at most $4$.
Let G be a finite group, p a fixed prime and P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. In this short note we prove that if p is odd, G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order p. For the case p=2, we show that G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order 2 and 4.
We prove that the factorization of a saturated fusion system over a discrete $p$-toral group as a product of indecomposable subsystems is unique up to normal automorphisms of the fusion system and permutations of the factors. In particular, if the fusion system has trivial center, or if its focal subgroup is the entire Sylow group, then this factorization is unique (up to the ordering of the factors). This result was motivated by questions about automorphism groups of products of fusion systems.
We classify all (saturated) fusion systems on bicyclic 2-groups. Here, a bicyclic group is a product of two cyclic subgroups. This extends previous work on fusion systems on metacyclic 2-groups (see [Craven-Glesser, 2012] and [Sambale, 2012]). As an application we prove Olsson's Conjecture for all blocks with bicyclic defect groups.
In this article, we compare two different notions of partially defined group strutures, namely partial groups and pregroups, as introduced by Chermak and Stallings respectively. In particular we prove that the category of pregroups can be seen as a full subcategory of the category of partial groups. We also bring out some conjugation properties about elements and subgroups of finite order in pregroups and their universal groups. We then use these to investigate the question of realisability of fusion systems in finite pregroups.
We correct an error in Lemma 3.1 of my paper coauthored with Ran Levi on the Benson-Solomon fusion systems, and show that the change does not affect any of the other results in that paper. More precisely, as pointed out to us by Justin Lynd, there are two conjugacy classes of elementary abelian subgroups of rank $3$ in each of the fusion systems $\cal{F}_{\rm Sol}(q)$, and not only one as claimed in our paper.
