Lagrangian cobordisms are three-dimensional compact oriented cobordisms between once-punctured surfaces, subject to some homological conditions. We extend the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant of homology three-spheres to a functor from the category of Lagrangian cobordisms to a certain category of Jacobi diagrams. We prove some properties of this functorial LMO invariant, including its universality among rational finite-type invariants of Lagrangian cobordisms. Finally, we apply the LMO functor to the study of homology cylinders from the point of view of their finite-type invariants.
We construct cobordism maps on link Floer homology associated to decorated link cobordisms. The maps are defined on a curved chain homotopy type invariant. We describe the construction, and prove invariance. We also make a comparison with the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology.
Using the diagrammatic calculus for Soergel bimodules developed by B. Elias and M. Khovanov, we show that Rouquier complexes are functorial over braid cobordisms. We explicitly describe the chain maps which correspond to movie move generators.
Cheptea, Habiro and Massuyeau constructed the LMO functor, which is defined on a certain category of cobordisms between two surfaces with at most one boundary component. In this paper, we extend the LMO functor to the case of any number of boundary components, and our functor reflects relations among the parts corresponding to the genera and boundary components of surfaces. We also discuss a relationship with finite-type invariants and Milnor invariants.
We adapt the notion of Jacobi diagrams on surfaces (considered by Andersen-Mattes-Reshetikhin), and construct a LMO-like map that we use to compare some functoriality properties of WRT and LMO invariants.
For rational homology 3-spheres, there exist two universal finite-type invariants: the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant and the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant. These invariants take values in the same space of "Jacobi diagrams", but it is not known whether they are equal. In 2004, Lescop proved that the KKT invariant satisfies some "splitting formulas" which relate the variations of KKT under replacement of embedded rational homology handlebodies by others in a "Lagrangian-preserving" way. We show that the LMO invariant satisfies exactly the same relations. The proof is based on the LMO …
It has been a central open problem in Heegaard Floer theory whether cobordisms of links induce homomorphisms on the associated link Floer homology groups. We provide an affirmative answer by introducing a natural notion of cobordism between sutured manifolds, and showing that such a cobordism induces a map on sutured Floer homology. This map is a common generalization of the hat version of the closed 3-manifold cobordism map in Heegaard Floer theory, and the contact gluing map defined by Honda, Kazez, and Matić. We show that sutured Floer homology, together with the above cobordism maps, forms…
Let M denote the mapping class group of S, a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component. The action of M on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of S allows to define the so-called Johnson filtration and the Johnson homomorphisms. J. Levine introduced a new filtration of M, called the Lagrangian filtration. He also introduced a version of the Johnson homomorphisms for this new filtration. The first term of the Lagrangian filtration is the Lagrangian mapping class group, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by S, and which contains the Torelli group. Th…
We construct a bigraded (co)homology theory which depends on a parameter a, and whose graded Euler characteristic is the quantum sl(2) link invariant. We follow Bar-Natan's approach to tangles on one side, and Khovanov's sl(3) theory for foams on the other side. Our theory is properly functorial under tangle cobordisms, and a version of the Khovanov sl(2) invariant (or Lee's modification of it) corresponds to a=0 (or a=1). In particular, our construction naturally resolves the sign ambiguity in the functoriality of Khovanov's sl(2) homology theory.
Let $R$ be an integral domain and $G$ be a subgroup of its group of units. We consider the category $\mathbf{\mathsf{Cob}}_G$ of 3-dimensional cobordisms between oriented surfaces with connected boundary, equipped with a representation of their fundamental group in $G$. Under some mild conditions on $R$, we construct a monoidal functor from $\mathbf{\mathsf{Cob}}_G$ to the category $\mathbf{\mathsf{pLagr}}_R$ consisting of "pointed Lagrangian relations" between skew-Hermitian $R$-modules. We call it the "Magnus functor" since it contains the Magnus representation of mapping class groups as a s…
The object of this paper is to define a subcategory of the category of 3-cobordisms to which invariants of rational homology 3-spheres should generalize. We specify the notion of Topological Quantum Field Theory (in the sense of Atiyah) to this case, and prove two interesting properties that these TQFTs always have. In the case of the LMO invariant these properties amount to saying that the TQFT is anomaly-free.
Let $Σ$ be a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component and let $\mathcal{M}$ denote the mapping class group of $Σ$. By considering the action of $\mathcal{M}$ on the fundamental group of $Σ$ it is possible to define different filtrations of $\mathcal{M}$ together with some homomorphisms on each term of the filtration. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly we study a filtration of $\mathcal{M}$ introduced recently by Habiro and Massuyeau, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by $Σ$. We shall call it the "alternative Johnson filtration", and the corresponding h…
We prove that the LOSS and GRID invariants of Legendrian links in knot Floer homology behave in certain functorial ways with respect to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of the standard contact structure on $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our results give new, computable, and effective obstructions to the existence of such cobordisms.
We introduce the notion of a Khovanov-Floer theory. Roughly, such a theory assigns a filtered chain complex over Z/2 to a link diagram such that (1) the E_2 page of the resulting spectral sequence is naturally isomorphic to the Khovanov homology of the link; (2) this filtered complex behaves nicely under planar isotopy, disjoint union, and 1-handle addition; and (3) the spectral sequence collapses at the E_2 page for any diagram of the unlink. We prove that a Khovanov-Floer theory naturally yields a functor from the link cobordism category to the category of spectral sequences. In particular, …
We describe a modification of Khovanov homology (math.QA/9908171), in the spirit of Bar-Natan (math.GT/0410495), which makes the theory properly functorial with respect to link cobordisms. This requires introducing `disorientations' in the category of smoothings and abstract cobordisms between them used in Bar-Natan's definition. Disorientations have `seams' separating oppositely oriented regions, coming with a preferred normal direction. The seams satisfy certain relations (just as the underlying cobordisms satisfy relations such as the neck cutting relation). We construct explicit chain maps…
In this paper we prove that every Khovanov homology associated to a Frobenius algebra of rank $2$ can be modified in such a way as to produce a TQFT on oriented links, that is a monoidal functor from the category of cobordisms of oriented links to the homotopy category of complexes.
We prove that Morrison and Nieh's categorification of the su(3) quantum knot invariant is functorial with respect to tangle cobordisms. This is in contrast to the categorified su(2) theory, which was not functorial as originally defined. We use methods of Bar-Natan to construct explicit chain maps for each variation of the third Reidemeister move. Then, to show functoriality, we modify arguments used by Clark, Morrison, and Walker to show that induced chain maps are invariant under Carter and Saito's movie moves.
Morita introduced in 2008 a 1-cocycle on the group of homology cobordisms of surfaces with values in an infinite-dimensional vector space. His 1-cocycle contains all the "traces" of Johnson homomorphisms which he introduced fifteen years earlier in his study of the mapping class group. In this paper, we propose a new version of Morita's 1-cocycle based on a simple and explicit construction. Our 1-cocycle is proved to satisfy several fundamental properties, including a connection with the Magnus representation and the LMO homomorphism. As an application, we show that the rational abelianization…
We show that the EH class and the LOSS invariant of Legendrian knots in contact 3-manifolds are functorial under regular Lagrangian concordances in Weinstein cobordisms. This gives computable obstructions to the existence of regular Lagrangian concordances.
We combinatorially describe the $2$-category of singular cobordisms, called (rank one) foams, which governs the functorial version of Khovanov homology. As an application we topologically realize the type $\mathrm{D}$ arc algebra using this singular cobordism construction.
We discuss functoriality properties of the Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant, and expose a number of results which seemed destined for folklore. We clarify the (in)dependence of the invariant on the basepoint, prove that it is functorial with respect to contactomorphisms, and show that it is strongly functorial under Stein cobordisms.
Khovanov introduced a cohomology theory for oriented classical links whose graded Euler characteristic is the Jones polynomial. Since Khovanov's theory is functorial for link cobordisms between classical links, we obtain an invariant of a surface-knot, called the {\it Khovanov-Jacobsson number}, by considering the surface-knot as a link cobordism between empty links. In this paper, we define an invariant of a surface-knot which is a generalization of the Khovanov-Jacobsson number by using Bar-Natan's theory, and prove that any $T^2$-knot has the trivial Khovanov-Jacobsson number.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field and let $G\subset \mathbb{F}\setminus \{0\}$ be a multiplicative subgroup. We consider the category $\mathcal{Cob}_G$ of $3$-dimensional cobordisms equipped with a representation of their fundamental group in $G$, and the category ${Vect}_{\mathbb{F},\pm G}$ of $\mathbb{F}$-linear maps defined up to multiplication by an element of $\pm G$. Using the elementary theory of Reidemeister torsions, we construct a "Reidemeister functor" from $Cob_G$ to ${Vect}_{\mathbb{F},\pm G}$. In particular, when the group $G$ is free abelian and $\mathbb{F}$ is the field of fractions …
Khovanov homology ist a new link invariant, discovered by M. Khovanov, and used by J. Rasmussen to give a combinatorial proof of the Milnor conjecture. In this thesis, we give examples of mutant links with different Khovanov homology. We prove that Khovanov's chain complex retracts to a subcomplex, whose generators are related to spanning trees of the Tait graph, and we exploit this result to investigate the structure of Khovanov homology for alternating knots. Further, we extend Rasmussen's invariant to links. Finally, we generalize Khovanov's categorifications of the colored Jones polynomial…
We introduce a generalization of oriented tangles, which are still called tangles, so that they are in one-to-one correspondence with the sutured manifolds. We define cobordisms between sutured manifolds (tangles) by generalizing cobordisms between oriented tangles. For every commutative algebra A over Z/2Z, we define A-Tangles to be the category consisting of A-tangles, which are balanced tangles with A-colorings of the tangle strands and fixed SpinC structures, and A-cobordisms as morphisms. An A-cobordism is a cobordism with a compatible A-coloring and an affine set of SpinC structures. Ass…
A homological invariant of 3-manifolds is defined, using abelian Yang-Mills gauge theory. It is shown that the construction, in an appropriate sense, is functorial with respect to the families of 4-dimensional cobordisms. This construction and its functoriality are used to define several link invariants. The strongest version of these invariants has the form of a filtered chain complex that can recover Khovanov homology of the mirror image as a bi-graded group.
We create a framework for odd Khovanov homology in the spirit of Bar-Natan's construction for the ordinary Khovanov homology. Namely, we express the cube of resolutions of a link diagram as a diagram in a certain 2-category of chronological cobordisms and show that it is 2-commutative: the composition of 2-morphisms along any 3-dimensional subcube is trivial. This allows us to create a chain complex, whose homotopy type modulo certain relations is a link invariant. Both the original and the odd Khovanov homology can be recovered from this construction by applying certain strict 2-functors. We …
A three-manifold equipped with a Heegaard diagram can be used to set up a Floer homology theory whose differential counts pseudo-holomorphic disks in the $g$-fold symmetric product of the Heegaard surface. This leads to a topological invariant for three-manifolds, Heegaard Floer homology, which is functorial under cobordisms. In this survey article, we sketch this construction and describe some of its topological applications.
In arXiv:1611.09927, we constructed a well-defined Lagrangian Floer invariant for any closed, oriented $3$-manifold $Y$ via the symplectic geometry of so-called traceless $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-character varieties. This invariant, $\mathrm{SI}(Y)$, which we refer to as the symplectic instanton homology of $Y$, was also shown to satisfy an exact triangle for Dehn surgeries on knots which is typical of Floer-theoretic invariants of $3$-manifolds. In this article, we demonstrate further structural properties of this symplectic instanton homology. For example, Floer theories are expected to roughly sati…
Aimed at geometric applications, we prove the homology cobordism invariance of the $L^2$-betti numbers and $L^2$-signature defects associated to the class of amenable groups lying in Strebel's class $D(R)$, which includes some interesting infinite/finitenon-torsion-free groups. The proofs include the only prior known condition, that $Γ$ is a poly-torsion-free abelian group (or potentially a finite $p$-group.) We define a new commutator-type series which refines Harvey's torsion-free derived series of groups, using the localizations of groups and rings of Bousfield, Vogel, and Cohn. The series,…
For a diagram of a 2-stranded tangle in the 3-ball we define a twisted complex of compact Lagrangians in the triangulated envelope of the Fukaya category of the smooth locus of the pillowcase. We show that this twisted complex is a functorial invariant of the isotopy class of the tangle, and that it provides a factorization of Bar-Natan's functor from the tangle cobordism category to chain complexes. In particular, the hom set of our invariant with a particular non-compact Lagrangian associated to the trivial tangle is naturally isomorphic to the reduced Khovanov chain complex of the closure o…
