Projective multi-resolution analyses arising from direct limits of Hilbert modules

The authors have recently shown how direct limits of Hilbert spaces can be used to construct multi-resolution analyses and wavelets in $L^2(\R)$. Here they investigate similar constructions in the context of Hilbert modules over $C^*$-algebras. For modules over $C(\T^n)$, the results shed light on work of Packer and Rieffel on projective multi-resolution analyses for specific Hilbert $C(\T^n)$-modules of functions on $\R^n$. There are also new applications to modules over $C(C)$ when $C$ is the infinite path space of a directed graph.

Projective Hilbert Modules and Sequential Approximation

We show that, when $A$ is a separable C*-algebra, every countably generated Hilbert $A$-module is projective (with bounded module maps as morphisms). We also study the approximate extensions of bounded module maps. In the case that $A$ is a $σ$-unital simple C*-algebra with strict comparison and every strictly positive lower semicontinuous affine function on quasitraces can be realized as the rank of an element in Cuntz semigroup, we show that the Cuntz semigroup is the same as unitarily equivalent class of countably generated Hilbert $A$-modules if and only if $A$ has stable rank one.

Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras of stable rank one and projective Hilbert modules

Let $A$ be a simple C*-algebra of stable rank one and let $p$ and $q$ be two $σ$-compact open projections. It is proved that there is a continuous path of unitaries in ${\tilde A}$ which connects open sub-projections of $p$ which is compactly contained in $p$ to those in $q.$ It is also shown that every Hilbert module is projective in the category whose morphisms are bounded module maps with adjoints. A discussion of projective Hilbert modules (whose morphisms are bounded module maps) is also given.

Projective representations of groups using Hilbert right C*-modules

The projective representation of groups was introduced in 1904 by Issai Schur. It differs from the normal representation of groups by a twisting factor. It starts with a group T and a scalar valued function f on T^2 satisfying the conditions: f(1,1)=1, |f(s,t)|=1, and f(r,s)f(rs,t)=f(r,st)f(s,t) for all r,s,t in T. The projective representation of T twisted by f is a unital C*-subalgebra of the C*-algebra of operators on the Hilbert space l^2(T). Injective and projective Hilbert C-modules, and C-algebras of compact operators

We consider projectivity and injectivity of Hilbert C*-modules in the categories of Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules over a fixed C*-algebra of coefficients (and another fixed C*-algebra represented as bounded module operators) and bounded (bi-)module morphisms, either necessarily adjointable or arbitrary ones. As a consequence of these investigations, we obtain a set of equivalent conditions characterizing C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras of compact operators on Hilbert spaces in terms of general properties of Hilbert C*-modules over them. Hilbertian matrix cross normed spaces arising from normed ideals

Generalizing Pisier's idea, we introduce a Hilbertian matrix cross normed space associated with a pair of symmetric normed ideals. When the two ideals coincide, we show that our construction gives an operator space if and only if the ideal is the Schatten class. In general, a pair of symmetric normed ideals that are not necessarily the Schatten class may give rise to an operator space. We study the space of completely bounded mappings between the matrix cross normed spaces obtained in this way and show that the multiplicator norm naturally appears as the completely bounded norm.

Isomorphism of Hilbert modules over stably finite C*-algebras

It is shown that if A is a stably finite C*-algebra and E is a countably generated Hilbert A-module, then E gives rise to a compact element of the Cuntz semigroup if and only if E is algebraically finitely generated and projective. It follows that if E and F are equivalent in the sense of Coward, Elliott and Ivanescu (CEI) and E is algebraically finitely generated and projective, then E and F are isomorphic. In contrast to this, we exhibit two CEI-equivalent Hilbert modules over a stably finite C*-algebra that are not isomorphic.

Convergent Star Products for Projective Limits of Hilbert Spaces

Given a locally convex vector space with a topology induced by Hilbert seminorms and a continuous bilinear form on it we construct a topology on its symmetric algebra such that the usual star product of exponential type becomes continuous. Many properties of the resulting locally convex algebra are explained. We compare this approach to various other discussions of convergent star products in finite and infinite dimensions. We pay special attention to the case of a Hilbert space and to nuclear spaces.

Spectral and homological properties of Hilbert modules over the disc algebra

We study general Hilbert modules over the disc algebra and exhibit necessary spectral conditions for the vanishing of certain associated extension groups. In particular, this sheds some light on the problem of identifying the projective Hilbert modules. Part of our work also addresses the classical derivation problem.

The density theorem for projective representations via twisted group von Neumann algebras

We consider converses to the density theorem for irreducible, projective, unitary group representations restricted to lattices using the dimension theory of Hilbert modules over twisted group von Neumann algebras. We show that under the right assumptions, the restriction of a $σ$-projective unitary representation $π$ of a group $G$ to a lattice $Γ$ extends to a Hilbert module over the twisted group von Neumann algebra $\text{L}(Γ,σ)$.
