We provide a tool for studying properly discontinuous actions of non-compact groups on locally compact, connected and paracompact spaces, by embedding such an action in a suitable zero-dimensional compactification of the underlying space with pleasant properties. Precisely, given such an action $(G,X)$ we construct a zero-dimensional compactification $μX$ of $X$ with the properties: (a) there exists an extension of the action on $μX$, (b) if $μL\subseteq μX\setminus X$ is the set of the limit points of the orbits of the initial action in $μX$, then the restricted action $(G,μX\setminus μL)$ remains properly discontinuous, is indivisible and equicontinuous with respect to the uniformity induced on $μX\setminus μL$ by that of $μX$, and (c) $μX$ is the maximal among the zero-dimensional compactifications of $X$ with these properties. Proper actions are usually embedded in the end point compactification $εX$ of $X$, in order to obtain topological invariants concerning the cardinality of the space of the ends of $X$, provided that $X$ has an additional "nice" property of rather local character ("property Z", i.e., every compact subset of $X$ is contained in a compact and connected one). If the considered space has this property, our new compactification coincides with the end point one. On the other hand, we give an example of a space not having the "property Z" for which our compactification is different from the end point compactification. As an application, we show that the invariant concerning the cardinality of the ends of $X$ holds also for a class of actions strictly containing the properly discontinuous ones and for spaces not necessarily having "property Z".
To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theo…
We study equicontinuous actions of semisimple groups and some generalizations. We prove that any such action is universally closed, and in particular proper. We derive various applications, both old and new, including closedness of continuous homomorphisms, nonexistence of weaker topologies, metric ergodicity of transitive actions and vanishing of matrix coefficients for reflexive (more generally: WAP) representations.
One point compactification is studied in the light of ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$. $\mathcal{I}$-proper map is introduced and showed that a continuous map can be extended continuously to the one point $\mathcal{I}$-compactification if and only if the map is $\mathcal{I}$-proper. Shrinking condition(C) introduced in this article plays an important role to study various properties of $\mathcal{I}$-proper maps. It is seen that one point $\mathcal{I}$-compactification of a topological space may fail to be Hausdorff but a class $\{\mathcal{I}\}$ of ideals has been identified for which one poin…
This paper studies coarse compactifications and their boundary. We introduce two alternative descriptions to Roe's original definition of coarse compactification. One approach uses bounded functions on $X$ that can be extended to the boundary. They satisfy the Higson property exactly when the compactification is coarse. The other approach defines a relation on subsets of $X$ which tells when two subsets closure meet on the boundary. A set of axioms characterizes when this relation defines a coarse compactification. Such a relation is called large-scale proximity. Based on this foundational wor…
Every topological group $G$ has some natural compactifications which can be a useful tool of studying $G$. We discuss the following constructions: (1) the greatest ambit $S(G)$ is the compactification corresponding to the algebra of all right uniformly continuous bounded functions on $G$; (2) the Roelcke compactification $R(G)$ corresponds to the algebra of functions which are both left and right uniformly continuous; (3) the weakly almost periodic compactification $W(G)$ is the envelopping compact semitopological semigroup of $G$ (`semitopological' means that the multiplication is separately …
The Higson compactification of any simply connected proper geodesic metric space admits an embedding into a product of adelic solenoids that induces an isomorphism of 1-dimensional cohomology.
In contexts in which the principle of dependent choice may not be available, as toposes or Constructive Set Theory, standard locale theoretic results related to complete regularity may fail to hold. To resolve this difficulty, B. Banaschewski and A. Pultr introduced strongly regular locales. Unfortunately, Banaschewski and Pultr's notion relies on non-constructive set existence principles that hinder its use in Constructive Set Theory. In this article, a fully constructive formulation of strong regularity for locales is introduced by replacing non-constructive set existence with coinductive se…
In this paper, we introduce coproducts of proximity spaces. After exploring several of their basic properties, we show that given a collection of proximity spaces, the coproduct of their Smirnov compactifications proximally and densely embeds in the Smirnov compactification of the coproduct of the original proximity spaces. We also show that the dense proximity embedding is a proximity isomorphism if and only if the index set is finite. After constructing a number of examples of coproducts and their Smirnov compactifications, we explore several properties of the Smirnov compactification of the…
If a Hausdorff locally compact paracompact space has a coarse structure, then there is a family of well behaved compactifications associated to it. If there are two of these spaces, $X$ and $Y$, with a good coarse equivalence, then there is a correspondence between these families of compactifications of $X$ and $Y$. On the other hand, if a group $G$ has a properly discontinuous cocompact action on a Hausdorff locally space $X$, then there is also a correspondence between nice compactifications of $G$ and nice compactifications of $X$. In this paper we show that when there are both concepts inv…
Let $X$ be a space. A space $Y$ is called an extension of $X$ if $Y$ contains $X$ as a dense subspace. For an extension $Y$ of $X$ the subspace $Y\backslash X$ of $Y$ is called the remainder of $Y$. Two extensions of $X$ are said to be equivalent if there is a homeomorphism between them which fixes $X$ pointwise. For two (equivalence classes of) extensions $Y$ and $Y'$ of $X$ let $Y\leq Y'$ if there is a continuous mapping of $Y'$ into $Y$ which fixes $X$ pointwise. Let $P$ be a topological property. An extension $Y$ of $X$ is called a $P$-extension of $X$ if it has $P$. If $P$ is compactness …
Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional space and $C_c(X)$ be the set of all continuous real valued functions on $X$ with countable image. In this article we denote by $C_c^K(X)$ (resp., $C_{c}^ψ(X)$) the set of all functions in $C_c(X)$ with compact (resp., pseudocompact) support. First, we observe that $C_c^{K}(X)=O_c^{β_0X\setminus X}$ (resp., $C_c^ψ(X)=M_c^{β_0X\setminus \upsilon_0X}$). This implies that for an $\Bbb{N}$-compact space $X$, the intersection of all free maximal ideals in $C_c(X)$ equals to $C_c^K(X)$, i.e., $M_c^{β_0X\setminus X}=C_c^K(X)$. Afterwards, by applying methods of functiona…
We introduce the notion of controlled products on metric spaces as a generalization of Gromov products, and construct boundaries by using controlled products, which we call the Gromov boundaries. It is shown that the Gromov boundary with respect to a controlled product on a proper metric space complements the space as a coarse compactification. It is also shown that there is a bijective correspondence between the set of all coarse equivalence classes of controlled products and the set of all equivalence classes of coarse compactifications.
A coarse compactification of a proper metric space $X$ is any compactification of $X$ that is dominated by its Higson compactification. In this paper we describe the maximal coarse compactification of $X$ whose corona is of dimension $0$. In case of geodesic spaces $X$, it coincides with the Freundenthal compactification of $X$. As an application we provide an alternative way of extending the concept of the number of ends from finitely generated groups to arbitrary countable groups. We present a geometric proof of a generalization of Stallings' theorem by showing that any countable group of tw…
The following is an open problem in topology: Determine whether the Stone-Čech compactification of a widely-connected space is necessarily an indecomposable continuum. Herein we describe properties of $X$ that are necessary and sufficient in order for $βX$ to be indecomposable. We show that indecomposability and irreducibility are equivalent properties in compactifications of indecomposable separable metric spaces, leading to some equivalent formulations of the open problem. We also construct a widely-connected subset of Euclidean $3$-space which is contained in a composant of each of its comp…
In this article, we continue our study of Baire one functions on a topological space $X$, denoted by $B_1(X)$ and extend the well known M. H. Stones's theorem from $C(X)$ to $B_1(X)$. Introducing the structure space of $B_1(X)$, it is observed that $X$ may not be embedded inside this structure space. This observation inspired us to build a space $\mathcal{M}(B_1(X))/\sim$, from the structure space of $B_1(X)$ and to show that $X$ is densely embedded in $\mathcal{M}(B_1(X))/\sim$. It is further established that it is a $T_0$-compactification of $X$. Such compactification of $X$ possesses the ex…
We verified that the existence of a maximal ideal of height 0 in a p-adic algebra in a certain class is independent of the axiom of ZFC. We established the theory on a P-point in the boundary of a topological space in the universal totally disconnected Hausdorff compactification. It is quite similar with the theory on a P-point in the boundary of a topological space in the Stone-Cech compactification. The latter theory relies on the real analysis, and the reason why the real analysis works for it is because the Stone-Cech compactification has the lifting property for a real bounded continuous …
