R. Stanley has found a nice combinatorial formula for characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group of rectangular shape. Then, he has given a conjectural generalisation for any shape. Here, we will prove this formula using shifted Schur functions and Jucys-Murphy elements.
A hyperplane arrangement is said to satisfy the ``Riemann hypothesis'' if all roots of its characteristic polynomial have the same real part. This property was conjectured by Postnikov and Stanley for certain families of arrangements which are defined for any irreducible root system and was proved for the root system $A_{n-1}$. The proof is based on an explicit formula for the characteristic polynomial, which is of independent combinatorial significance. Here our previous derivation of this formula is simplified and extended to similar formulae for all but the exceptional root systems. The con…
We give a new formula for the irreducible spin characters of the symmetric groups. This formula is analogous to Stanley's character formula for the usual (linear) characters of the symmetric groups.
A characteristic polynomial is an important invariant in the field of hyperplane arrangement. For the Linial arrangement of any irreducible root system, Postnikov and Stanley conjectured that all roots of the characteristic polynomial have the same real part. In relation to this conjecture, Yoshinaga obtained an explicit relationship between the characteristic quasi-polynomial and the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for the fundamental alcove. In this paper, we calculate Yoshinaga's explicit formula through the decomposition of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial into several quasi-polynomials and a modifie…
Odlyzko and Stanley introduced a greedy algorithm for constructing infinite sequences with no 3-term arithmetic progressions when beginning with a finite set with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. The sequences constructed from this procedure are known as Stanley sequences and appear to have two distinct growth rates which dictate whether the sequences are structured or chaotic. A large subclass of sequences of the former type is independent sequences, which have a self-similar structure. An attribute of interest for independent sequences is the character. In this paper, building on recent pr…
Stanley considered suitably normalized characters of the symmetric groups on Young diagrams having a special geometric form, namely multirectangular Young diagrams. He proved that the character is a polynomial in the lengths of the sides of the rectangles forming the Young diagram and he conjectured an explicit form of this polynomial. This Stanley character polynomial and this way of parametrizing the set of Young diagrams turned out to be a powerful tool for several problems of the dual combinatorics of the characters of the symmetric groups and asymptotic representation theory, in particula…
Stanley and Odlyzko proposed a method for greedily constructing sets with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. It is conjectured that there is a dichotomy between such sequences: those that have a periodic structure as the sequence satisfies certain recurrence relations while others appear to be chaotic. One large class of sequences that have these periodic behaviors are known as independent sequences that have two parameters, a character and a growth factor. It was conjectured by Rolnick that all but a finite set of integers can be achieved as characters of a independent sequences. Previously t…
Given a set of integers containing no 3-term arithmetic progressions, one constructs a Stanley sequence by choosing integers greedily without forming such a progression. Independent Stanley sequences are a "well-structured" class of Stanley sequences with two main parameters: the character $λ(A)$ and the repeat factor $ρ(A)$. Rolnick conjectured that for every $λ\in \mathbb{N}_0\backslash\{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$, there exists an independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$ such that $λ(A) =λ$. This paper demonstrates that $λ(A) \not\in \{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$ for any independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$.
Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.
Monomial ideals which are generic with respect to either their generators or irreducible components have minimal free resolutions derived from simplicial complexes. For a generic monomial ideal, the associated primes satisfy a saturated chain condition, and the Cohen-Macaulay property implies shellability for both the Scarf complex and the Stanley-Reisner complex. Reverse lexicographic initial ideals of generic lattice ideals are generic. Cohen-Macaulayness for cogeneric ideals is characterized combinatorially; in the cogeneric case the Cohen-Macaulay type is greater than or equal to the numbe…
Generalizing the notion of a vexillary permutation, we introduce a filtration of S_infinity by the number of Schur function terms in the Stanley symmetric function, with the kth filtration level called the k-vexillary permutations. We show that for each k, the k-vexillary permutations are characterized by avoiding a finite set of patterns. A key step is the construction of a Specht series, in the sense of James and Peel, for the Specht module associated to the diagram of a permutation. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture of Liu on diagram varieties for certain classes of permutation diagrams…
Stanley introduced expressions for the normalized characters of the symmetric group and stated some positivity conjectures for these expressions. Here, we give an affirmative partial answer to Stanley's positivity conjectures about the expressions using results on Kerov polynomials. In particular, we use new positivity results by Goulden and the present author. We shall see that the generating series $C(t)$ introduced by them is critical to our discussion.
In this paper, we enumerate the pairs of permutations that are long cycles and whose product has a given cycle-type. Our main result is a simple relation concerning the desired numbers for a few related cycle-types. The relation refines a formula of the number of pairs of long cycles whose product has $k$ cycles independently obtained by Zagier and Stanley relying on group characters, and was previously obtained by Féray and Vassilieva by counting some colored permutations first and then relying on some algebraic computations in the ring of symmetric functions. Our approach here is simpler and…
We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of …
Let G be a group of automorphisms of a ranked poset Q and let N_{k} denote the number of orbits on the elements of rank k in Q. What can be said about the N_{k} for standard posets, such as finite projective spaces or the Boolean lattice? We discuss the connection of this question to the representation theory of the group, and in particular to the inequalities of Livingstone-Wagner and Stanley. We show that these are special cases of more general inequalities which depend on the prime divisors of the group order. The new inequalities often yield stronger bounds depending on the order of the gr…
A matroid complex is a pure complex such that every restriction is again pure. It is a long-standing open problem to classify all possible $h$-vectors of such complexes. In the case when the complex has dimension 1 we completely resolve this question. We also prove the 1-dimensional case of a conjecture of Stanley that all matroid $h$-vectors are pure ${O}$-sequences. Finally, we completely characterize the Stanley-Reisner ideals of 1-dimensional matroid complexes.
The chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph was introduced by Shareshian and Wachs as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. An explicit combinatorial formula, conjectured by Shareshian and Wachs, expressing the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph of a natural unit interval order in terms of power sum symmetric functions, is proven. The proof uses a formula of Roichman for the irreducible characters of the symmetric group.
We prove an upper bound for characters of the symmetric groups. Namely, we show that there exists a constant a>0 with a property that for every Young diagram λwith n boxes, r(λ) rows and c(λ) columns |Tr ρ^λ(π) / Tr ρ^λ(e)| < [a max(r(λ)/n, c(λ)/n,|π|/n) ]^{|π|}, where |π| is the minimal number of factors needed to write π\in S_n as a product of transpositions. We also give uniform estimates for the error term in the Vershik-Kerov's and Biane's character formulas and give a new formula for free cumulants of the transition measure.
In general it is a difficult problem to construct the lattice of submodules $L(M)$ of a given module $M$. In \cite{St} R. P. Stanley outlined a method for constucting a distributive lattice from a knowledge of its join irreducibles. However it is not an easy task to identify all join irreducible submodules of a given module. In the case of a multiplicity free module $M$ we present a modifiiction of Stanley's method based on the composition factors of $M$. As input we require a set of submodules $A_1,\ldots , A_n$ whose submodule lattices are known and which contain all composition factors of $…
Motivated by Stanley's results in \cite{St02}, we generalize the rank of a partition $λ$ to the rank of a shifted partition $S(λ)$. We show that the number of bars required in a minimal bar tableau of $S(λ)$ is max$(o, e + (\ell(λ) \mathrm{mod} 2))$, where $o$ and $e$ are the number of odd and even rows of $λ$. As a consequence we show that the irreducible projective characters of $S_n$ vanish on certain conjugacy classes. Another corollary is a lower bound on the degree of the terms in the expansion of Schur's $Q_λ$ symmetric functions in terms of the power sum symmetric functions.
In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reis…
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and p…
An irreducible character $χ$ of an association scheme is called nonlinear if the multiplicity of $χ$ is greater than $1$. The main result of this paper gives a characterization of commutative association schemes with at most two nonlinear irreducible characters. This yields a characterization of finite groups with at most two nonlinear irreducible characters. A class of noncommutative association schemes with at most two nonlinear irreducible character is also given.
We extend the notion of face rings of simplicial complexes and simplicial posets to the case of finite-length (possibly infinite) simplicial posets with a group action. The action on the complex induces an action on the face ring, and we prove that the ring of invariants is isomorphic to the face ring of the quotient simplicial poset under a mild condition on the group action. We also identify a class of actions on simplicial complexes that preserve the homotopical Cohen-Macaulay property under quotients. When the acted-upon poset is the independence complex of a semimatroid, the $h$-polynomia…
A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.
Stanley symmetric functions are the stable limits of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we show that, conversely, Schubert polynomials are Demazure truncations of Stanley symmetric functions. This parallels the relationship between Schur functions and Demazure characters for the general linear group. We establish this connection by imposing a Demazure crystal structure on key tableaux, recently introduced by the first author in connection with Demazure characters and Schubert polynomials, and linking this to the type A crystal structure on reduced word factorizations, recently introduced by …
In math.CO/0109093 the author obtained a formula for the value of an irreducible symmetric group character indexed by a partition of rectangular shape. In the present paper this formula is (conjecturally) generalized to arbitrary shapes.
Let $P$ be a simple polytope of dimension $n$ with $m$ facets. In this paper we pay our attention on those elementary symmetric polynomials in the Stanley--Reisner face ring of $P$ and study how the decomposability of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial influences on the combinatorics of $P$ and the topology and geometry of toric spaces over $P$. We give algebraic criterions of detecting the decomposability of $P$ and determining when $P$ is $n$-colorable in terms of the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial. In addition, we define the Stanley--Reisner {\em exterior} face ring $\mathca…
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain …
We relate the linear asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric groups to its spin counterpart. In particular, we give explicit formulas which express the normalized irreducible spin characters evaluated on a strict partition $ξ$ with analogous normalized linear characters evaluated on the double partition $D(ξ)$. We also relate some natural filtration on the usual (linear) Kerov-Olshanski algebra of polynomial functions on the set of Young diagrams with its spin counterpart. Finally, we give a spin counterpart to Stanley formula for the characters of the symmetric groups.
Let K be a complex reductive algebraic group and V a representation of K. Let S denote the ring of polynomials on V. Assume that the action of K on S is multiplicity free. If V_λ is an irreducible representation of K, let S_λ denote the corresponding isotypic component of S. Write S_λ S_μ for the subspace of S spanned by products of S_λ and S_μ. If V_ν occurs as an irreducible constituent of the tensor product of V_λ and V_μ, is it true that S_ν is contained in S_λ S_μ? We investigate this question for representations arising in the context of Hermitian symmetric pairs. We show that the answer…
For any finite group G it is an interesting question to ask which ordinary irreducible representations of G remain irreducible in a given characteristic p. We answer this question for p=2 when G is the proper double cover of the alternating group. As a key ingredient in the proof, we prove a formula for the decomposition numbers in Rouquier blocks of double covers of symmetric groups, in terms of Schur P-functions.
Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams. Résumé. Les cumulants libres sont des fo…
The object of this short note is to prove a theorem and present a conjecture for the number of even entries in the character table of the symmetric group.
We give a new formula for the values of an irreducible character of the symmetric group S_n indexed by a partition of rectangular shape. Some observations and a conjecture are given concerning a generalization to arbitrary shapes.
We consider sequences of degrees of ordinary irreducible $S_n$-characters. We assume that the corresponding Young diagrams have rows and columns bounded by some linear function of $n$ with leading coefficient less than one. We show that any such sequence has at least exponential growth and we compute an explicit bound.
We use vertex operators to compute irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Two general formulas are given for the irreducible characters in terms of those of the symmetric groups or the Iwahori-Hecke algebras in lower degrees. Explicit formulas are derived for the irreducible characters labeled by hooks and two-row partitions. Using duality, we also formulate a determinant type Murnaghan-Nakayama formula and give another proof of Ram's combinatorial Murnaghan-Nakayama formula. As applications, we study super-characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as well as the bitrac…
