We observe that the class of left and right artinian left and right morphic rings agrees with the class of artinian principal ideal rings. For $R$ an artinian principal ideal ring and $G$ a group, we characterize when $RG$ is a principal ideal ring; for finite groups $G$, this characterizes when $RG$ is a left and right morphic ring. This extends work of Passman, Sehgal and Fisher in the case when $R$ is a field, and work of Chen, Li, and Zhou on morphic group rings.
An associative ring $R$ with identity is left pseudo-morphic if for every $a$$\in$$R$, there exists $b$$\in$$R$ such that $Ra=l_R(b)$. If, in addition, $l_R(a)=Rb$, then $R$ is called left morphic. $R$ is morphic if it is both left and right morphic. We characterize left pseudo-morphic rings; identify the cases a (left) pseudo morphic ring is (left) quasi-morphic, morphic, Quasi-Frobenius, von Neumann regular, etc.; correct two results in a book and a paper; and completely determine when the trivial extension of a commutative domain is morphic which positively answered a question in a paper.
Let $L$ be a restricted Lie algebra over a field of positive characteristic. We prove that the restricted enveloping algebra of $L$ is a principal ideal ring if and only if $L$ is an extension of a finite-dimensional torus by a cyclic restricted Lie algebra.
In this paper, the determinants of $n\times n$ matrices over commutative finite chain rings and over commutative finite principal ideal rings are studied. The number of $n\times n$ matrices over a commutative finite chain ring ${R}$ of a fixed determinant $a$ is determined for all $a\in {R}$ and positive integers $n$. Using the fact that every commutative finite principal ideal ring is a product of commutative finite chain rings, the number of $n\times n$ matrices of a fixed determinant over a commutative finite principal ideal ring is shown to be multiplicative, and hence, it can be determine…
We prove that for every trace zero matrix $A$ over a principal ideal ring $R$, there exist trace zero matrices $X,Y$ over $R$ such that $XY-YX=A$. Moreover, we show that $X$ can be taken to be regular mod every maximal ideal of $R$. This strengthens our earlier result that $A$ is a commutator of two matrices (not necessarily of trace zero), and in addition, the present proof is significantly simpler than the earlier one. Shalev has conjectured an analogous statement for group commutators in $\mathrm{SL}_{n}$ over $p$-adic integers. We prove Shalev's conjecture for $n=2$.
We prove that if R is a principal ideal ring and A\in\M_n(R) is a matrix with trace zero, then A is a commutator, that is, A=XY-YX for some X,Y\in\M_n(R). This generalises the corresponding result over fields due to Albert and Muckenhoupt, as well as that over Z due to Laffey and Reams, and as a by-product we obtain new simplified proofs of these results. We also establish a normal form for similarity classes of matrices over PIDs, generalising a result of Laffey and Reams. This normal form is a main ingredient in the proof of the result on commutators.
We show that if a groupoid graded ring has a certain nonzero ideal property and the principal component of the ring is commutative, then the intersection of a nonzero twosided ideal of the ring with the commutant of the principal component of the ring is nonzero. Furthermore, we show that for a skew groupoid ring with commutative principal component, the principal component is maximal commutative if and only if it is intersected nontrivially by each nonzero ideal of the skew groupoid ring. We also determine the center of strongly groupoid graded rings in terms of an action on the ring induced …
Let R be a commutative ring with unity $1\in R$. In this article, we introduce the concept of prime principal right ideal rings (\textbf{PPRIR}), A prime ideal P of R is said to be prime principal right ideal (\textbf{PPRI}) is given by $P =\{ ar : r\in R\}$ for some element a. The ring R is said to be prime principal right ideal ring (\textbf{PPRIR}) if every prime ideal of R is a prime principal right ideal (\textbf{PPRI}). A prime principal right ideal ring R is called a prime principal right ideal domain (\textbf{PPRID}) if R is a domain. Several properties and characteristics of prime pri…
Let $R$ be a ring, $(S,\leq)$ a strictly ordered monoid and $ω: S\rightarrow End(R)$ a monoid homomorphism. In this paper we study the ascending chain conditions on principal left (resp. right) ideals of the skew generalized power series ring $R[[S,ω]]$. Among other results, it is shown that $R[[S,ω]]$ is a right archimedean reduced ring if $S$ is an Artinian strictly totally ordered monoid, $R$ is a right archimedean and $S$-rigid ring which satisfies the ACC on annihilators and $ω_s$ preserves nonunits of $R$ for each $s\in S$. As a consequence we deduce that the power series rings, Laurent …
Let E be an arbitrary graph and K be any field. For every non-graded ideal I of the Leavitt path algebra L_{K}(E), we give an explicit description of the generators of I. Using this, we show that every finitely generated ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal. In particular, if E is a finite graph, then every ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal ideal.
In a ring $A$ an ideal $I$ is called (principally) nilary if for any two (principal) ideals $V, W$ in $A$ with $VW\subseteq I,$ then either $V^n\subseteq I$ or $W^m\subseteq I,$ for some positive integers $m$ and $n$ depending on $V$ and $W;$ a ring $A$ is called (principally) nilary if the zero ideal is a (principally) nilary ideal~\cite{Birkenmeier2013133}. Let $G$ be a group and $A$ be a ring with unity. It is natural to ask when the group ring $A[G]$ is a (principally) nilary ring. We proved that, if $A[G]$ is a (principally) nilary ring, then the ring $A$ is a (principally) nilary ring; a…
Let $R$ be a commutative $G$-graded ring with a nonzero unity. In this article, we introduce the concept of graded radically principal ideals. A graded ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be graded radically principal if $Grad(I)=Grad(\langle c\rangle)$ for some homogeneous $c\in R$, where $Grad(I)$ is the graded radical of $I$. The graded ring $R$ is said to be graded radically principal if every graded ideal of $R$ is graded radically principal. We study graded radically principal rings. We prove an analogue of the Cohen theorem, in the graded case, precisely, a graded ring is graded radically princ…
A ring $R$ is called a PIR, if each ideal of $R$ is a principal ideal. An local ring $(R,\mf{m)}$ is a artinian PIR if and only if its maximal ideal $\mf{m}$ is principal and has finite nilpotency index. In this paper, we determine the structure of a finite local PIR.
Let $λ$ and $κ$ be cardinal numbers such that $κ$ is infinite and either $2\leq λ\leq κ$, or $λ=2^κ$. We prove that there exists a lattice $L$ with exactly $λ$ many congruences, $2^κ$ many ideals, but only $κ$ many filters. Furthermore, if $λ\geq 2$ is an integer of the form $2^m\cdot 3^n$, then we can choose $L$ to be a modular lattice generating one of the minimal modular nondistributive congruence varieties described by Ralph Freese in 1976, and this $L$ is even relatively complemented for $λ=2$. Related to some earlier results of George Grätzer and the first author, we also prove that if $…
We study pairs of finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain and their corresponding matrix representations. We introduce equivalence relations for such pairs and determine invariants and canonical forms.
In this article we revisit a problem regarding Bezout domains, namely, whether every Bezout domain is an elementary divisor domain. We prove that a Bezout domain in which every maximal ideal is principal is an elementary divisor ring
The main focus of this paper is the complete enumeration of self-dual abelian codes in non-principal ideal group algebras $\mathbb{F}_{2^k}[A\times \mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^s}]$ with respect to both the Euclidean and Hermitian inner products, where $k$ and $s$ are positive integers and $A$ is an abelian group of odd order. Based on the well-know characterization of Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual abelian codes, we show that such enumeration can be obtained in terms of a suitable product of the number of cyclic codes, the number of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes, and the number of H…
We consider the Whitehead problem for principal ideal domains of large size. It is proved, in ZFC, that some p.i.d.'s of size >= aleph_{2} have non-free Whitehead modules even though they are not complete discrete valuation rings.
The concept of an $I$-matrix in the full $2\times 2$ matrix ring $M_2(R/I)$, where $R$ is an arbitrary UFD and $I$ is a nonzero ideal in $R$, was introduced in \cite{mar}. Moreover a concrete description of the centralizer of an $I$-matrix $\hat B$ in $M_2(R/I)$ as the sum of two subrings $\mathcal S_1$ and $\mathcal S_2$ of $M_2(R/I)$ was also given, where $\mathcal S_1$ is the image (under the natural epimorphism from $M_2(R)$ to $M_2(R/I)$) of the centralizer in $M_2(R)$ of a pre-image of $\hat B$, and where the entries in $\mathcal S_2$ are intersections of certain annihilators of elements…
In this paper, we give an important isomorphism between contacyclic codes and cyclic codes over finite principal ideal rings. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of non-trivial cyclic self-dual codes over finite principal ideal rings are given.
In this paper similarity classes of three by three matrices over a local principal ideal commutative ring are analyzed. When the residue field is finite, a generating function for the number of similarity classes for all finite quotients of the ring is computed explicitly.
We give a thorough structural analysis of the principal one-sided ideals of arbitrary semigroups, and then apply this to full transformation semigroups and symmetric inverse monoids. One-sided ideals of these semigroups naturally occur as semigroups of transformations with restricted range or kernel.
For any constacyclic code over a finite commutative chain ring of length coprime to the characteristic of the ring, we construct explicitly generator polynomials and check polynomials, and exhibit a BCH bound for such constacyclic codes. As a consequence, such constacyclic codes are principal. Further, we get a necessary and sufficient condition that the cyclic codes over a finite commutative principal ideal ring are all principal. This condition is still sufficient for constacyclic codes over such rings being principal.
We show that if a groupoid graded ring has a certain nonzero ideal property, then the commutant of the center of the principal component of the ring has the ideal intersection property, that is it intersects nontrivially every nonzero ideal of the ring. Furthermore, we show that for skew groupoid algebras with commutative principal component, the principal component is maximal commutative if and only if it has the ideal intersection property.
We show how to construct discretely ordered principal ideal subrings of $\mathbb Q[x]$ with various types of prime behaviour. Given any set $\mathcal D$ consisting of finite strictly increasing sequences $(d_1,d_2,\dots, d_l)$ of positive integers such that, for each prime integer $p$, the set $\{p\mathbb Z, d_1+p\mathbb Z,\dots, d_l+p\mathbb Z\}$ does not contain all the cosets modulo $p$, we can stipulate to have, for each $(d_1,\dots, d_l)\in \mathcal D$, a cofinal set of progressions $(f, f+d_1, \dots, f+d_l)$ of prime elements in our principal ideal domain $R_τ$. Moreover, we can simultan…
We prove some algebraic results on the ring of matrix differential operators over a differential field in the generality of non-commutative principal ideal rings. These results are used in the theory of non-local Poisson structures.
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
It has been a well-known fact since Euclid's time that there exist infinitely many rational primes. Two natural questions arise: In which other rings, sufficiently similar to the integers, are there infinitely many irreducible elements? Is there a unifying algebraic concept that characterizes such rings? The purpose of this note is to place the fact concerning the infinity of primes into a more general context, one that also includes the interesting case of the factorial domains of algebraic integers in a number field. We show that, if $A$ is a P.I.D., then $A$ contains infinitely many (pairwi…
Let R be a finite principal left ideal ring. Via a total ordering of the ring elements and an ordered basis a lexicographic ordering of the module R^n is produced. This is used to set up a greedy algorithm that selects vectors for which all linear combination with the previously selected vectors satisfy a pre-specified selection property and updates the to-be-constructed code to the linear hull of the vectors selected so far. The output is called a lexicode. This process was discussed earlier in the literature for fields and chain rings. In this paper we investigate the properties of such lexi…
This paper investigates situations where a property of a ring can be tested on a set of "prime right ideals." Generalizing theorems of Cohen and Kaplansky, we show that every right ideal of a ring is finitely generated (resp. principal) iff every "prime right ideal" is finitely generated (resp. principal), where the phrase "prime right ideal" can be interpreted in one of many different ways. We also use our methods to show that other properties can be tested on special sets of right ideals, such as the right artinian property and various homological properties. Applying these methods, we prove…
A finite ring R and a weight w on R satisfy the Extension Property if every R-linear w-isometry between two R-linear codes in R^n extends to a monomial transformation of R^n that preserves w. MacWilliams proved that finite fields with the Hamming weight satisfy the Extension Property. It is known that finite Frobenius rings with either the Hamming weight or the homogeneous weight satisfy the Extension Property. Conversely, if a finite ring with the Hamming or homogeneous weight satisfies the Extension Property, then the ring is Frobenius. This paper addresses the question of a characterization…
In this paper we study commutative rings $R$ whose prime ideals are direct sums of cyclic modules. In the case $R$ is a finite direct product of commutative local rings, the structure of such rings is completely described. In particular, it is shown that for a local ring $(R, \cal{M})$, the following statements are equivalent: (1) Every prime ideal of $R$ is a direct sum of cyclic $R$-modules; (2) ${\cal{M}}=\bigoplus_{λ\in Λ}Rw_λ$ and $R/{\rm Ann}(w_λ)$ is a principal ideal ring for each $λ\in Λ$;(3) Every prime ideal of $R$ is a direct sum of at most $|Λ|$ cyclic $R$-modules; and (4) Every p…
We begin this chapter by introducing the simple algebraic structure of cyclic codes over finite fields. This structure undergoes a series of generalizations to present algebraic descriptions of constacyclic, quasi-cyclic (QC), quasi-twisted (QT), generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC), and multi-twisted (MT) codes. The correspondence between these codes and submodules of the free $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$-module $\left(\mathbb{F}_q[x]\right)^\ell$ is established. Thus, any of these codes corresponds to a free linear code over the principal ideal domain (PID) $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. A basis of this code exists and …
The first purpose of this paper is to point out a curious result announced by Macaulay on the Hilbert function of a differential module in his famous book The Algebraic Theory of Modular Systems published in 1916. Indeed, on page 78/79 of this book, Macaulay is saying the following: " A polynomial ideal $\mathfrak{a} \subset k[χ\_1$,..., $χ\_n]=k[χ]$ is of the {\it principal class} and thus {\it unmixed} if it has rank $r$ and is generated by $r$ polynomials. Having in mind this definition, a primary ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ with associated prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} = rad(\mathfrak{q})$ is such th…
