We provide general methods for explicitly constructing strict Lyapunov functions for fully nonlinear slowly time-varying systems. Our results apply to cases where the given dynamics and corresponding frozen dynamics are not necessarily exponentially stable. This complements our previous Lyapunov function constructions for rapidly time-varying dynamics. We also explicitly construct input-to-state stable Lyapunov functions for slowly time-varying control systems. We illustrate our findings by constructing explicit Lyapunov functions for a pendulum model, an example from identification theory, and a perturbed friction model.
We provide explicit closed form expressions for strict Lyapunov functions for time-varying discrete time systems. Our Lyapunov functions are expressed in terms of known nonstrict Lyapunov functions for the dynamics and finite sums of persistency of excitation parameters. This provides a discrete time analog of our previous continuous time Lyapunov function constructions. We also construct explicit strict Lyapunov functions for systems satisfying nonstrict discrete time analogs of the conditions from Matrosov's Theorem. We use our methods to build strict Lyapunov functions for time-varying hybr…
We explicitly construct global strict Lyapunov functions for rapidly time-varying nonlinear control systems. The Lyapunov functions we construct are expressed in terms of oftentimes more readily available Lyapunov functions for the limiting dynamics which we assume are uniformly globally asymptotically stable. This leads to new sufficient conditions for uniform global exponential, uniform global asymptotic, and input-to-state stability of fast time-varying dynamics. We also construct strict Lyapunov functions for our systems using a strictification approach. We illustrate our results using a f…
We study the stability properties of a class of time-varying nonlinear systems. We assume that non-strict input-to-state stable (ISS) Lyapunov functions for our systems are given and posit a mild persistency of excitation condition on our given Lyapunov functions which guarantee the existence of strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems. Next, we provide simple direct constructions of explicit strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems by applying an integral smoothing method. We illustrate our constructions using a tracking problem for a rotating rigid body.
For a general time-varying system, we prove that existence of an "Output Robust Control Lyapunov Function" implies existence of continuous time-varying feedback stabilizer, which guarantees output asymptotic stability with respect to the resulting closed-loop system. The main results of the present work constitute generalizations of a well-known result towards feedback stabilization due to J. M. Coron and L. Rosier concerning stabilization of autonomous systems by means of time-varying periodic feedback.
The objective of this paper is to study detectability, observability and related Lyapunov-type theorems of linear discrete-time time-varying stochastic systems with multiplicative noise. Some new concepts such as uniform detectability, ${\cal K}^{\infty}$-exact detectability (resp. ${\cal K}^{WFT}$-exact detectability, ${\cal K}^{FT}$-exact detectability, ${\cal K}^{N}$-exact detectability) and ${\cal K}^{\infty}$-exact observability (resp. ${\cal K}^{WFT}$-exact observability, ${\cal K}^{FT}$-exact observability, ${\cal K}^{N}$-exact observability) are introduced, respectively, and nice prope…
We consider decentralized optimization problems where one aims to minimize a sum of convex smooth objective functions distributed between nodes in the network. The links in the network can change from time to time. For the setting when the amount of changes is arbitrary, lower complexity bounds and corresponding optimal algorithms are known, and the consensus acceleration is not possible. However, in practice the magnitude of network changes may be limited. We derive lower communication complexity bounds for several regimes of velocity of networks changes. Moreover, we show how to obtain accel…
We study optimal distributed first-order optimization algorithms when the network (i.e., communication constraints between the agents) changes with time. This problem is motivated by scenarios where agents experience network malfunctions. We provide a sufficient condition that guarantees a convergence rate with optimal (up lo logarithmic terms) dependencies on the network and function parameters if the network changes are constrained to a small percentage $α$ of the total number of iterations. We call such networks slowly time-varying networks. Moreover, we show that Nesterov's method has an i…
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based {\color{black}time varying} controllers for {\color{black}fast} stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as {\color{black}time varying} higher order sliding mode controllers since they are designed for nonlinear Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. %{\color{blue} OLD: Our main result states that, given any neighborhood $\varepsilon$ of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds,…
Performance analysis for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems has been closely tied to quadratic Lyapunov functions ever since it was shown that LTI system stability is equivalent to the existence of such a Lyapunov function. Some metrics for LTI systems, however, have resisted treatment via means of quadratic Lyapunov functions. Among these, point-wise-in-time metrics, such as peak norms, are not captured accurately using these techniques, and this shortcoming has prevented the development of tools to analyze system behavior by means other than e.g. time-domain simulations. This work demonstra…
In this paper, we study the portfolio optimization problem with general utility functions and when the return and volatility of underlying asset are slowly varying. An asymptotic optimal strategy is provided within a specific class of admissible controls under this problem setup. Specifically, we first establish a rigorous first order approximation of the value function associated to a fixed zeroth order suboptimal trading strategy, which is given by the heuristic argument in [J.-P. Fouque, R. Sircar and T. Zariphopoulou, {\it Mathematical Finance}, 2016]. Then, we show that this zeroth order …
In this paper, we study the problem of control of discrete-time linear time varying systems over uncertain channels. The uncertainty in the channels is modeled as a stochastic random variable. We use exponential mean square stability of the closed-loop system as a stability criterion. We show that fundamental limitations arise for the mean square exponential stabilization for the closed-loop system expressed in terms of statistics of channel uncertainty and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the open-loop uncontrolled system. Our results generalize the existing results known in the case of line…
This paper investigates the problem of solving discrete-time Lyapunov equations (DTLE) over a multi-agent system, where every agent has access to its local information and communicates with its neighbors. To obtain a solution to DTLE, a distributed algorithm with uncoordinated constant step sizes is proposed over time-varying topologies. The convergence properties and the range of constant step sizes of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Moreover, a linear convergence rate is proved and the convergence performances over dynamic networks are verified by numerical simulations.
This paper introduces an advanced Lyapunov stability analysis for an attitude observer that has been developed on the special orthogonal group. In particular, when the attitude observer is constructed based on multiple direction measurements toward known reference points, a local exponential stability has been established by linearization, under the assumption that those reference points are fixed in the inertial frame. Several modifications have been proposed to deal with reference directions changing over time. Here, we present an alternative Lyapunov analysis to show that the attitude obser…
Polyhedral Lyapunov functions can approximate any norm arbitrarily well. Because of this, they are used to study the stability of linear time varying and linear parameter varying systems without being conservative. However, the computational cost associated with using them grows unbounded as the size of their representation increases. Finding them is also a hard computational problem. Here we present an algorithm that attempts to find polyhedral functions while keeping the size of the representation fixed, to limit computational costs. We do this by measuring the gap from contraction for a giv…
We prove that for linear, discrete, time-varying, deterministic system (perfect model) with noisy outputs, the Riccati transformation in the Kalman filter asymptotically bounds the rank of the forecast and the analysis error covariance matrices to be less than or equal to the number of non-negative Lyapunov exponents of the system. Further, the support of these error covariance matrices is shown to be confined to the space spanned by the unstable-neutral backward Lyapunov vectors, providing the theoretical justification for the methodology of the algorithms that perform assimilation only in th…
We present a framework to transform the problem of finding a Lyapunov function of a Chemical Reaction Network (CRN) in concentration coordinates with arbitrary monotone kinetics into finding a common Lyapunov function for a linear parameter varying system in reaction coordinates. Alternative formulations of the proposed Lyapunov function is presented also. This is applied to reinterpret previous results by the authors on Piecewise Linear in Rates Lyapunov functions, and to establish a link with contraction analysis. Persistence and uniqueness of equilibria are discussed also.
For general time-varying or switched (nonlinear) systems, converse Lyapunov theorems for stability are not available. In these cases, the integral input-to-state stability (iISS) property is not equivalent to the existence of an iISS-Lyapunov function but can still be characterized as the combination of global uniform asymptotic stability under zero input (0-GUAS) and uniformly bounded energy input-bounded state (UBEBS). For impulsive systems, asymptotic stability can be weak (when the asymptotic decay depends only on elapsed time) or strong (when such a decay depends also on the number of imp…
