This paper deals with the robust stability analysis of linear systems, subject to time-varying parameters. The Parameter Dependent Lyapunov Function are considered, assuming that the temporal derivative of the parameters are bounded. Some computational issues are discussed, which are present in Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based approaches and are exacerbated as the quantity of time-varying parameters increases. A possible solution to deal with issues is proposed by modifying the inclusion of the information regarding the time-derivative bounds. Complexity in the number of LMIs constraints can be reduced from very complex to linear. Numerical examples are provide to illustrate the advantages of the proposed methodology.
In this technical note, we generalize the well-known Lyapunov-based stabilizability and detectability tests for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems to the context of discrete-time (DT) polytopic linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. To do so, we exploit the mathematical structure of the class of poly-quadratic Lyapunov functions, which enables us to formulate conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Our results differ from existing conditions in that we adopt weaker assumptions on the parameter dependence of the controllers/observers and our method does not require explic…
We study stability criteria for discrete-time switched systems and provide a meta-theorem that characterizes all Lyapunov theorems of a certain canonical type. For this purpose, we investigate the structure of sets of LMIs that provide a sufficient condition for stability. Various such conditions have been proposed in the literature in the past fifteen years. We prove in this note that a family of languagetheoretic conditions recently provided by the authors encapsulates all the possible LMI conditions, thus putting a conclusion to this research effort. As a corollary, we show that it is PSPAC…

In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear observer based on neural networks, called neural observer, for observation tasks of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems and uncertain nonlinear systems. In particular, the neural observer designed for uncertain systems is inspired by the active disturbance rejection control, which can measure the uncertainty in real-time. The stability analysis (e.g., exponential convergence rate) of LTI and uncertain nonlinear systems (involving neural observers) are presented and guaranteed, where it is shown that the observation problems can be solved only using t…
This paper is concerned with the state estimation problem for genetic regulatory networks with time-varying delays and reaction-diffusion terms under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is assumed that the nonlinear regulation function is of the Hill form. The purpose of this paper is to design a state observer to estimate the concentrations of mRNA and protein through available measurement outputs. By introducing new integral terms in a novel Lyapunov--Krasovskii functional and employing Wirtinger-based integral inequality, Wirtinger's inequality, Green's identity, convex combination approach, …
This paper studies the finite-time stability and stabilization of linear discrete time-varying stochastic systems with multiplicative noise. Firstly, necessary and sufficient conditions for finite-time stability are presented via state transition matrix approach. Secondly, this paper also develops the Lyapunov function method to study finite-time stability and stabilization of discrete time-varying stochastic systems based on matrix inequalities and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), so as to Matlab LMI Toolbox can be used. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of th…

We discuss a design approach for nonlinear discrete-time adaptive observer. This involves transforming a nonlinear system into a quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) polytopic model in Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) form using nonlinear embedding and sector nonlinearity (SNL) transformation. We then develop a discrete-time counterpart for a joint state and parameter estimation, based on design strategies developed for continuous time models in the existing literature. The design uses a Lyapunov approach and provides an error bounded by $\mathbb{L}_2$ gain. Based on this strategy, we propose a design for …
In this paper, the design of a static feedback gain for a linear system subject to an input delay is studied. This synthesis is based on a stability analysis conducted using Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem and Bessel-Legendre inequalities expressed in terms of LMIs. Some bilinear non-convex matrix inequalities are obtained to go from analysis to synthesis. They are then difficult to solve and an iterative LMI procedure is given which takes advantage of the elimination lemma. Naturally, slack variables are introduced and then, following an optimization process, values for them are proposed to reduc…
This paper is devoted to stability analysis of discrete-time delay systems based on a set of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. New multiple summation inequalities are derived that involve the famous discrete Jensen's and Wirtinger's inequalities, as well as the recently presented inequalities for single and double summation in P.T. Nam, H. Trinh, P.N. Pathirana, Discrete inequalities based on a multiple auxiliary functions and their applications to stability analysis of time-delay systems, Journal of the Franklin Institute, (2015). The present paper aims at showing that the proposed set of suff…
We study a sampled-data implementation of linear controllers that depend on the output and its derivatives. First, we consider an LTI system of relative degree $r\ge 2$ that can be stabilized using $r-1$ output derivatives. Then, we consider PID control of a second order system. In both cases, the Euler approximation is used for the derivatives giving rise to a delayed sampled-data controller. Given a derivative-dependent controller that stabilizes the system, we show how to choose the parameters of the delayed sampled-data controller that preserves the stability under fast enough sampling. Th…
In this work, we present a scalable Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based framework to verify the stability of a set of linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in one spatial dimension coupled with a set of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) via input-output based interconnection. Our approach extends the newly developed state space representation and stability analysis of coupled PDEs that allows parametrizing the Lyapunov function on $L_2$ with multipliers and integral operators using polynomial kernels of semi-separable class. In particular, under arbitrary well-posed boundary condi…
The paper considers a linear matrix inequality (LMI) that depends on a parameter varying in a compact topological space. It turns out that if a strict LMI continuously depends on a parameter and is feasible for any value of that parameter, then it has a solution which continuously depends on the parameter. The result holds true for LMIs that arise in S-procedure and Yakubovich lemma. It is shown that the LMI which is polynomially dependent on a vector of parameters can be reduced to a parameter-independent LMI of a higher dimension. The result is based on the recent generalization of Yakubovic…
This paper is concerned with convergence analysis for the mirror descent (MD) method, a well-known algorithm in convex optimization. An analysis framework via integral quadratic constraints (IQCs) is constructed to analyze the convergence rate of the MD method with strongly convex objective functions in both continuous-time and discrete-time. We formulate the problem of finding convergence rates of the MD algorithms into feasibility problems of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) in both schemes. In particular, in continuous-time, we show that the Bregman divergence function, which is commonly u…
In this paper, we study the application of switched systems stability criteria to derive delay-dependent conditions for systems affected by both a constant and a time-varying delay. The main novelty of our approach lies on the use of path-complete Lyapunov techniques along with the proposition of a new modified functional to obtain convex analysis conditions while avoiding the need of computing a dwell time for each mode in a switched system representation, as usual in the \textit{switched approach} for time-delay systems. Furthermore, we leverage the developed analysis to obtain LMIs for the …
