We consider the dynamics of a periodic chain of N coupled overdamped particles under the influence of noise, in the limit of large N. Each particle is subjected to a bistable local potential, to a linear coupling with its nearest neighbours, and to an independent source of white noise. For strong coupling (of the order N^2), the system synchronises, in the sense that all oscillators assume almost the same position in their respective local potential most of the time. In a previous paper, we showed that the transition from strong to weak coupling involves a sequence of symmetry-breaking bifurcations of the system's stationary configurations, and analysed in particular the behaviour for coupling intensities slightly below the synchronisation threshold, for arbitrary N. Here we describe the behaviour for any positive coupling intensity γof order N^2, provided the particle number N is sufficiently large (as a function of γ/N^2). In particular, we determine the transition time between synchronised states, as well as the shape of the "critical droplet", to leading order in 1/N. Our techniques involve the control of the exact number of periodic orbits of a near-integrable twist map, allowing us to give a detailed description of the system's potential landscape, in which the metastable behaviour is encoded.
We consider the dynamics of a periodic chain of N coupled overdamped particles under the influence of noise. Each particle is subjected to a bistable local potential, to a linear coupling with its nearest neighbours, and to an independent source of white noise. We show that as the coupling strength increases, the number of equilibrium points of the system changes from 3^N to 3. While for weak coupling, the system behaves like an Ising model with spin-flip dynamics, for strong coupling (of the order N^2), it synchronises, in the sense that all oscillators assume almost the same position in thei…
This paper continues the study of metastable behaviour in disordered mean field models initiated in [2], [3]. We consider the generalized Hopfield model with finitely many independent patterns $ξ_1,...,ξ_p$ where the patterns have i.i.d. components and follow discrete distributions on $[-1,1]$. We show that metastable behaviour occurs and provide sharp asymptotics on metastable exit times and the corresponding capacities. We apply the potential theoretic approach developed by Bovier et al. in the space of appropriate order parameters and use an analysis of the discrete Laplacian to obtain lowe…
We study a stochastic system of interacting neurons and its metastable properties. The system consists of $N$ neurons, each spiking randomly with rate depending on its membrane potential. At its spiking time, the neuron potential is reset to $0$ and all other neurons receive an additional amount $h/N$ of potential. In between successive spike times, each neuron looses potential at exponential speed. We study this system in the supercritical regime, that is, for sufficiently high values of the synaptic weight $h.$ Under very mild conditions on the spiking rate function, is has been shown in Dua…
In this paper we study metastable behaviour at low temperature of Glauber spin-flip dynamics on random graphs. We fix a large number of vertices and randomly allocate edges according to the Configuration Model with a prescribed degree distribution. Each vertex carries a spin that can point either up or down. Each spin interacts with a positive magnetic field, while spins at vertices that are connected by edges also interact with each other via a ferromagnetic pair potential. We start from the configuration where all spins point down, and allow spins to flip up or down according to a Metropolis…
We consider a system of $ N \in \mathbb{N} $ mean-field interacting stochastic differential equations that are driven by a single-site potential of double-well form and by Brownian noise. The strength of the noise is measured by a small parameter $ \varepsilon >0$ (which we interpret as the \emph{temperature}), and we suppose that the strength of the interaction is given by $ J>0 $. Choosing the \emph{empirical mean} ($ P:\mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R} $, $ Px =1/N \sum_i x_i $) as the macroscopic order parameter for the system, we show that the resulting macroscopic Hamiltonian has two g…
We study the metastable behaviour of a stochastic system of particles with hard-core interactions in a high-density regime. Particles sit on the vertices of a bipartite graph. New particles appear subject to a neighbourhood exclusion constraint, while existing particles disappear, all according to independent Poisson clocks. We consider the regime in which the appearance rates are much larger than the disappearance rates, and there is a slight imbalance between the appearance rates on the two parts of the graph. Starting from the configuration in which the weak part is covered with particles, …
We consider a finite system of interacting point processes with memory of variable length modeling a finite but large network of spiking neurons with two different leakage mechanisms. Associated to each neuron there are two point processes, describing its successive spiking and leakage times. For each neuron, the rate of the spiking point process is an exponential function of its membrane potential, with the restriction that the rate takes the value 0 when the membrane potential is 0. At each spiking time, the membrane potential of the neuron resets to 0, and simultaneously, the membrane poten…
This paper concerns the long-term behaviour of a system of interacting random walks labeled by vertices of a finite graph. The model is reversible which allows to use the method of electric networks in the study. In addition, examples of alternative proofs not requiring reversibility are provided.
Consider the complete graph on $n$ vertices. To each vertex assign an Ising spin that can take the values $-1$ or $+1$. Each spin $i \in [n]=\{1,2,\dots, n\}$ interacts with a magnetic field $h \in [0,\infty)$, while each pair of spins $i,j \in [n]$ interact with each other at coupling strength $n^{-1} J(i)J(j)$, where $J=(J(i))_{i \in [n]}$ are i.i.d. non-negative random variables drawn from a probability distribution with finite support. Spins flip according to a Metropolis dynamics at inverse temperature $β\in (0,\infty)$. We show that there are critical thresholds $β_c$ and $h_c(β)$ such t…
In this paper we study long-term evolution of a finite system of locally interacting birth-and-death processes labelled by vertices of a finite connected graph. A detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour is obtained in the case of both constant vertex degree graphs and star graphs. The model is motivated by modelling interactions between populations and is related to interacting particle systems, Gibbs models with unbounded spins, as well as urn models with interaction.
We study a class of time-inhomogeneous diffusion: the self-interacting one. We show a convergence result with a rate of convergence that does not depend on the diffusion coefficient. Finally, we establish a so-called Kramers' type law for the first exit-time of the process from domain of attractions when the landscapes are uniformly convex.
In this paper we study the long term evolution of a continuous time Markov chain formed by two interacting birth-and-death processes. The interaction between the processes is modelled by transition rates which are functions with suitable monotonicity properties. This is in line with the approach proposed by Gauss G.F. and Kolmogorov A.N. for modelling interaction between species in ecology. We obtain conditions for transience/recurrence of the Markov chain and describe in detail its asymptotic behaviour in special transient cases. In particular, we find that in some of these cases the Markov c…
On the long time behaviour of single stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons with constant signal, and a construction of circuits of interacting neurons showing self-organized rhythmic oscillations
This paper deals with some self-interacting diffusions $(X_t,t\geq 0)$ living on $\mathbb{R}^d$. These diffusions are solutions to stochastic differential equations: \[\mathrm{d}X_t=\mathrm{d}B_t-g(t)\nabla V(X_t-\barμ_t)\,\mathrm{d}t,\] where $\barμ_t$ is the empirical mean of the process $X$, $V$ is an asymptotically strictly convex potential and $g$ is a given function. We study the ergodic behaviour of $X$ and prove that it is strongly related to $g$. Actually, we show that $X$ is ergodic (in the limit quotient sense) if and only if $\barμ_t$ converges a.s. We also give some conditions (on…
This article examines large time behaviour of finite state mean-field interacting particle systems. Our first main result is a sharp estimate (in the exponential scale) on the time required for convergence of the empirical measure process of the $N$-particle system to its invariant measure; we show that when time is of the order of $\exp\{NΛ\}$ for a suitable constant $Λ\geq 0$, the process has mixed well and it is close to its invariant measure. We then obtain large-$N$ asymptotics of the second largest eigenvalue of the generator associated with the empirical measure process when it is rever…
We study a quasilinear parabolic Cauchy problem with a cumulative distribution function on the real line as an initial condition. We call 'probabilistic solution' a weak solution which remains a cumulative distribution function at all times. We prove the uniqueness of such a solution and we deduce the existence from a propagation of chaos result on a system of scalar diffusion processes, the interactions of which only depend on their ranking. We then investigate the long time behaviour of the solution. Using a probabilistic argument and under weak assumptions, we show that the flow of the Wass…
In the particular case of a concave flux function, we are interested in the long time behaviour of the nonlinear process associated to the one-dimensional viscous scalar conservation law. We also consider the particle system obtained by remplacing the cumulative distribution function in the drift coefficient of this nonlinear process by the empirical cdf. We first obtain trajectorial propagation of chaos result. Then, Poincaré inequalities are used to get explicit estimates concerning the long time behaviour of both the nonlinear process and the particle system.
We investigate the behaviour of a chain of interacting Brownian particles with one end fixed and the other moving away at slow speed, in the limit of small noise. The interaction between particles is through a pairwise potential with finite range. We consider both overdamped and underdamped dynamics.
