We consider existence and uniqueness of two kinds of coisotropic embeddings and deduce the existence of deformation quantizations of certain Poisson algebras of basic functions. First we show that any submanifold of a Poisson manifold satisfying a certain constant rank condition sits coisotropically inside some larger cosymplectic submanifold, which is naturally endowed with a Poisson structure. Then we give conditions under which a Dirac manifold can be embedded coisotropically in a Poisson manifold, extending a classical theorem of Gotay.
We show that deformations of a coisotropic submanifold inside a fibrewise entire Poisson manifold are controlled by the $L_\infty$-algebra introduced by Oh-Park (for symplectic manifolds) and Cattaneo-Felder. In the symplectic case, we recover results previously obtained by Oh-Park. Moreover we consider the extended deformation problem and prove its obstructedness.
We give a definition of coisotropic morphisms of shifted Poisson (i.e. $P_n$) algebras which is a derived version of the classical notion of coisotropic submanifolds. Using this we prove that an intersection of coisotropic morphisms of shifted Poisson algebras carries a Poisson structure of shift one less. Using an interpretation of Hamiltonian spaces as coisotropic morphisms we show that the classical BRST complex computing derived Poisson reduction coincides with the complex computing coisotropic intersection. Moreover, this picture admits a quantum version using brace algebras and their mod…
Let $(M,ω)$ be a geometrically bounded symplectic manifold, $N\subseteq M$ a closed, regular (i.e. "fibering") coisotropic submanifold, and $ϕ:M\to M$ a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. The main result of this article is that the number of leafwise fixed points of $ϕ$ is bounded below by the sum of the $Z_2$-Betti numbers of $N$, provided that the Hofer distance between $ϕ$ and the identity is small enough and the pair $(N,ϕ)$ is non-degenerate. The bound is optimal if there exists a $Z_2$-perfect Morse function on $N$. A version of the Arnol'd-Givental conjecture for coisotropic submanifolds is al…
Coisotropic algebras are used to formalize coisotropic reduction in Poisson geometry as well as in deformation quantization and find applications in various other fields as well. In this paper we prove a Serre-Swan Theorem relating the regular projective modules over the coisotropic algebra built out of a manifold $M$, a submanifold $C$ and an integrable smooth distribution $D \subseteq TC$ with vector bundles over this geometric situation and show an equivalence of categories for the case of a simple distribution.
The Poisson sigma model is a widely studied two-dimensional topological field theory. This note shows that boundary conditions for the Poisson sigma model are related to coisotropic submanifolds (a result announced in [math.QA/0309180]) and that the corresponding reduced phase space is a (possibly singular) dual pair between the reduced spaces of the given two coisotropic submanifolds. In addition the generalization to a more general tensor field is considered and it is shown that the theory produces Lagrangian evolution relations if and only if the tensor field is Poisson.
In this thesis, we study the deformation problem of coisotropic submanifolds in Jacobi manifolds. In particular we attach two algebraic invariants to any coisotropic submanifold $S$ in a Jacobi manifold, namely the $L_\infty[1]$-algebra and the BFV-complex of $S$. Our construction generalizes and unifies analogous constructions in symplectic, Poisson, and locally conformal symplectic geometry. As a new special case we also attach an $L_\infty[1]$-algebra and a BFV-complex to any coisotropic submanifold in a contact manifold. The $L_\infty[1]$-algebra of $S$ controls the formal coisotropic defo…
General boundary conditions ("branes") for the Poisson sigma model are studied. They turn out to be labeled by coisotropic submanifolds of the given Poisson manifold. The role played by these boundary conditions both at the classical and at the perturbative quantum level is discussed. It turns out to be related at the classical level to the category of Poisson manifolds with dual pairs as morphisms and at the perturbative quantum level to the category of associative algebras (deforming algebras of functions on Poisson manifolds) with bimodules as morphisms. Possibly singular Poisson manifolds …
We introduce the notion of a symplectic capacity relative to a coisotropic submanifold of a symplectic manifold, and we construct two examples of such capacities through modifications of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity. As a consequence, we obtain a non-squeezing theorem for symplectic embeddings relative to coisotropic constraints and existence results for leafwise chords on energy surfaces.
In recent years methods for the integration of Poisson manifolds and of Lie algebroids have been proposed, the latter being usually presented as a generalization of the former. In this note it is shown that the latter method is actually related to (and may be derived from) a particular case of the former if one regards dual of Lie algebroids as special Poisson manifolds. The core of the proof is the fact, discussed in the second part of this note, that coisotropic submanifolds of a (twisted) Poisson manifold are in one-to-one correspondence with possibly singular Lagrangian subgroupoids of sou…
We define (iterated) coisotropic correspondences between derived Poisson stacks, and construct symmetric monoidal higher categories of derived Poisson stacks where the $i$-morphisms are given by $i$-fold coisotropic correspondences. Assuming an expected equivalence of different models of higher Morita categories, we prove that all derived Poisson stacks are fully dualizable, and so determine framed extended TQFTs by the Cobordism Hypothesis. Along the way we also prove that the higher Morita category of $E_{n}$-algebras with respect to coproducts is equivalent to the higher category of iterate…
Using the Atiyah class we give a criterion for a vector bundle on a coisotropic subvariety, $Y$, of an algebraic Poisson variety $X$ to admit a first and second order noncommutative deformation. We also show noncommutative deformations of a vector bundle are governed by a curved dg Lie algebra which reduces to the classical relative Hochschild complex when the Poisson structure on $X$ is trivial.
Let G be an algebraic group over a field F of characteristic zero, with Lie algebra g=Lie(G). The dual space g^* equipped with the Kirillov bracket is a Poisson variety and each irreducible G-invariant subvariety X\subset g^* carries the induced Poisson structure. We prove that there is a family of algebraically independent polynomial functions {f_1,...f_l} on X, which pairwise commute with respect to the Poisson bracket and such that l=(dim X+tr.deg F(X)^G)/2. We also discuss several applications of this result to complete integrability of Hamiltonian systems on symplectic Hamiltonian G-varie…
We define and study coisotropic structures on morphisms of commutative dg algebras in the context of shifted Poisson geometry, i.e. $P_n$-algebras. Roughly speaking, a coisotropic morphism is given by a $P_{n+1}$-algebra acting on a $P_n$-algebra. One of our main results is an identification of the space of such coisotropic structures with the space of Maurer--Cartan elements in a certain dg Lie algebra of relative polyvector fields. To achieve this goal, we construct a cofibrant replacement of the operad controlling coisotropic morphisms by analogy with the Swiss-cheese operad which can be of…
This is an expository and introductory note on some results obtained in "Coisotropic embeddings in Poisson manifolds" (ArXiv math/0611480). Some original material is contained in the last two sections, where we consider linear Poisson structures.
We describe the differential graded Lie algebras governing Poisson deformations of a holomorphic Poisson manifold and coisotropic embedded deformations of a coisotropic holomorphic submanifold. In both cases, under some mild additional assumption, we show that the infinitesimal first order deformations induced by the anchor map are unobstructed. Applications include the analog of Kodaira stability theorem for coisotropic deformation and a generalization of McLean-Voisin's theorem about the local moduli space of lagrangian submanifold. Finally it is shown that our construction is homotopy equiv…
Let $α$ be a contact form on a manifold $M$, and $L\subseteq M$ a closed Legendrian submanifold. I prove that $L$ intersects some characteristic for $α$ at least twice if all characteristics are closed and of the same period, and $α$ embeds nicely into the product of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ and an exact symplectic manifold. As an application of the method of proof, the minimal action of a regular closed coisotropic submanifold of complex projective space is at most $π/2$. This yields an obstruction to presymplectic embeddings, and in particular to Lagrangian embeddings.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold, $N\subseteq M$ a coisotropic submanifold, and $Σ$ a compact oriented (real) surface. I define a natural Maslov index for each continuous map $u:Σ\to M$ that sends every connected component of $\partialΣ$ to some isotropic leaf of $N$. This index is real valued and generalizes the usual Lagrangian Maslov index. The idea is to use the linear holonomy of the isotropic foliation of $N$ to compensate for the loss of boundary data in the case codimension $N<\dim M/2$. The definition is based on the Salamon-Zehnder (mean) Maslov index of a path of linear symplect…
In this paper, we attach an $L_\infty$-algebra to any coisotropic submanifold in a Jacobi manifold. Our construction generalizes and unifies analogous constructions by Oh-Park (symplectic case), Cattaneo-Felder (Poisson case), Lê-Oh (locally conformal symplectic case). As a new special case, we attach an $L_\infty$-algebra to any coisotropic submanifold in a contact manifold. The $L_\infty$-algebra of a coisotropic submanifold $S$ governs the (formal) deformation problem of $S$.
We write down the local equations that characterize the submanifolds N of a Dirac manifold M which have a normal bundle that is either a coisotropic or an isotropic submanifold of TM endowed with the tangent Dirac structure. In the Poisson case, these formulas prove again a result of Xu: the submanifold N has a normal bundle which is a coisotropic submanifold of TM with the tangent Poisson structure iff N is a Dirac submanifold. In the presymplectic case, it is the isotropy of the normal bundle which characterizes the corresponding notion of a Dirac submanifold. On the way, we give a simple de…
This paper is devoted to coregular submanifolds in Poisson geometry. We show that their local Poisson saturation is an embedded Poisson submanifold, and we give a normal form for this Poisson submanifold around the coregular submanifold. This result recovers the normal form around Poisson transversals, and it yields Poisson versions of some normal form/rigidity results around constant rank submanifolds in symplectic geometry. As an application, we prove a uniqueness result concerning coisotropic embeddings of Dirac manifolds in Poisson manifolds. We also show how our results generalize to the …
We identify thirteen isomorphism classes of indecomposable coisotropic relations between Poisson vector spaces and show that every coisotropic relation between finite-dimensional Poisson vector spaces may be decomposed as a direct sum of multiples of these indecomposables. We also find a list of thirteen invariants, each of which is the dimension of a space constructed from the relation, such that the 13-vector of multiplicities and the 13-vector of invariants are related by an invertible matrix over $\mathbb Z$. It turns out to be simpler to do the analysis above for isotropic relations betwe…
We extend the construction of the BFV-complex of a coisotropic submanifold from the Poisson setting to the Jacobi setting. In particular, our construction applies in the contact and l.c.s. settings. The BFV-complex of a coisotropic submanifold $S$ controls the coisotropic deformation problem of $S$ under both Hamiltonian and Jacobi equivalence.
We give two equivalent sets of invariants which classify pairs of coisotropic subspaces of finite-dimensional Poisson vector spaces. For this it is convenient to dualize; we work with pairs of isotropic subspaces of presymplectic vector spaces. We identify ten elementary types which are the building blocks of such pairs, and we write down a matrix, invertible over $\mathbb{Z}$, which takes one 10-tuple of invariants to the other.
For an adiscal or monotone regular coisotropic submanifold $N$ of a symplectic manifold I define its Floer homology to be the Floer homology of a certain Lagrangian embedding of $N$. Given a Hamiltonian isotopy $ϕ=(ϕ^t)$ and a suitable almost complex structure, the corresponding Floer chain complex is generated by the $(N,ϕ)$-contractible leafwise fixed points. I also outline the construction of a local Floer homology for an arbitrary closed coisotropic submanifold. Results by Floer and Albers about Lagrangian Floer homology imply lower bounds on the number of leafwise fixed points. This repro…
The purpose of this paper is to carry out a classical construction of a non-constant holomorphic disk with boundary on (the suspension of) a Lagrangian submanifold in $\mathbb{R}^{2 n}$ in the case the Lagrangian is the lift of a coisotropic (a.k.a. pre-Lagrangian) submanifold in (a subset $U$ of) $\mathbb{R}^{2 n - 1}$. We show that the positive lower and finite upper bounds for the area of such a disk (which are due to M. Gromov and J.-C. Sikorav and F. Laudenbach-Sikorav for general Lagrangians) depend on the coisotropic submanifold only but not on its lift to the symplectization. The main …
In this paper, we study deformations of coisotropic submanifolds in a symplectic manifold. First we derive the equation that governs $C^\infty$ deformations of coisotropic submanifolds and define the corresponding $C^\infty$-moduli space of coisotropic submanifolds modulo the Hamiltonian isotopies. This is a non-commutative and non-linear generalization of the well-known description of the local deformation space of Lagrangian submanifolds as the set of graphs of {\it closed} one forms in the Darboux-Weinstein chart of a given Lagrangian submanifold. We then introduce the notion of {\it strong…
In this note we point out the striking relation between the conditions arising within geometric quantization and the non-perturbative Poisson sigma model. Starting from the Poisson sigma model, we analyze necessary requirements on the path integral measure which imply a certain integrality condition for the Poisson cohomology class $[α]$. The same condition was considered before by Crainic and Zhu but in a different context. In the case when $[α]$ is in the image of the sharp map we reproduce the Vaisman's condition for prequantizable Poisson manifolds. For integrable Poisson manifolds we show…
This dissertation investigates the problem of locally embedding singular Poisson spaces. Specifically, it seeks to understand when a singular symplectic quotient V/G of a symplectic vector space V by a group G \subseteq Sp_2n(R) is realizable as a Poisson subspace of some Poisson manifold (R^n,{.,.}). The local embedding problem is recast in the language of schemes and reinterpreted as a problem of extending the Poisson bracket to infinitesimal neighborhoods of an embedded singular space. Such extensions of a Poisson bracket near a singular point p of V/G are then related to the cohomology and…
We present a novel $C^0$-characterization of symplectic embeddings and diffeomorphisms in terms of Lagrangian embeddings. Our approach is based on the shape invariant, which was discovered by J.-C. Sikorav and Y. Eliashberg, intersection theory and the displacement energy of Lagrangian submanifolds, and the fact that non-Lagrangian submanifolds can be displaced immediately. This characterization gives rise to a new proof of $C^0$-rigidity of symplectic embeddings and diffeomorphisms. The various manifestations of Lagrangian rigidity that are used in our arguments come from $J$-holomorphic curv…
In this paper we first describe the geometry of the Newton polyhedra of polynomials invariant under certain linear Hamiltonian circle actions. From the geometry of the polyhedra, various Poisson structures on the orbit spaces of the actions are derived and Poisson embeddings into model spaces, for the orbit spaces, are constructed. The Poisson structures, on respective source and model space, are compatible even for the minimum possible (embedding) dimension of the model spaces. This is, in particular, important since it is still an open question if, in general, there exist finite dimensional …
We formulate general definitions of semi-classical gauge transformations for noncommutative gauge theories in general backgrounds of string theory, and give novel explicit constructions using techniques based on symplectic embeddings of almost Poisson structures. In the absence of fluxes the gauge symmetries close a Poisson gauge algebra and their action is governed by a $P_\infty$-algebra which we construct explicitly from the symplectic embedding. In curved backgrounds they close a field dependent gauge algebra governed by an $L_\infty$-algebra which is not a $P_\infty$-algebra. Our techniqu…
Constrained Hamiltonian systems fall into the realm of presymplectic geometry. We show, however, that also Poisson geometry is of use in this context. For the case that the constraints form a closed algebra, there are two natural Poisson manifolds associated to the system, forming a symplectic dual pair with respect to the original, unconstrained phase space. We provide sufficient conditions so that the reduced phase space of the constrained system may be identified with a symplectic leaf in one of those. In the second class case the original constrained system may be reformulated equivalently…
