It is well-known that the associated analytic space of an affine variety defined over $\mathbb{C}$ is Stein but the converse is not true, that is, an algebraic Stein variety is not necessarily affine. In this paper, we give sufficient and necessary conditions for an algebraic Stein variety to be affine. One of our results is that an irreducible quasi-projective variety $Y$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$ with dimension $d$ ($d\geq 1$) is affine if and only if $Y$ is Stein, $H^i(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)=0$ for all $i>0$ and $κ(D, X)= d$ (i.e., $D$ is a big divisor), where $X$ is a projective variety containing $Y$ and $D$ is an effective divisor with support $X-Y$. If $Y$ is algebraic Stein but not affine, we also discuss the possible transcendental degree of the nonconstant regular functions on $Y$. We prove that $Y$ cannot have $d-1$ algebraically independent nonconstant regular functions. The interesting phenomenon is that the transcendental degree can be even if the dimension of $Y$ is even and the degree can be odd if the dimension of $Y$ is odd.
This paper studies the geometry and combinatorics of three interrelated varieties: Springer fibers, Steinberg varieties, and parabolic Hessenberg varieties. We prove that each parabolic Hessenberg variety is the pullback of a Steinberg variety under the projection of the flag variety to an appropriate partial flag variety and we give three applications of this result. The first application constructs an explicit paving of all Steinberg varieties in Lie type $A$ in terms of semistandard tableaux. As a result, we obtain an elementary proof of a theorem of Steinberg and Shimomura that the well-kn…
On a smooth algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$, we build the tempered subanalytic and Stein tempered subanalytic sites. We construct the sheaf of holomorphic functions tempered at infinity over these sites and study their relations with the sheaf of regular functions, proving in particular that these sheaves are isomorphic on Zariski open subsets. We show that these data allow to define the functors of tempered and Stein tempered analytifications. We study the relations between these two functors and the usual analytification functor. We also obtain algebraization results in the non-proper ca…
The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.
We define Schwarzenberger bundles on any smooth projective variety X. We introduce the notions of jumping pairs of a Steiner bundle E on X and determine a bound for the dimension of its jumping locus. We completely classify Steiner bundles whose set of jumping pairs have maximal dimension, proving that they are all Schwarzenberger bundles.
Let $K$ be a complete non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. Given an algebraic group over $K$ on which every regular function is constant, any rigid analytic function is shown to be constant too. It follows that an algebraic group over $K$ is affine if and only if the associated $K$-analytic space is Stein; that is, rigid analytic embeddings of it in an affine space may always be chosen to be given by algebraic functions. Arguably curiously, the corresponding statement over the complex numbers is false.
We extend the decomposition theorem for numerically $K$-trivial varieties with log terminal singularities to the Kähler setting. Along the way we prove that all such varieties admit a strong locally trivial algebraic approximation, thus completing the numerically $K$-trivial case of a conjecture of Campana and Peternell.
We use methods from computational algebraic geometry to study Chebyshev constants and the transfinite diameter of a pure $m$-dimensional affine algebraic variety in $\mathbb{C}^n$ ($m\leq n$). The main result is a generalization of Zaharjuta's integral formula for the Fekete-Leja transfinite diameter.
We consider the analogue for regular maps from affine varieties to suitable algebraic manifolds of Oka theory for holomorphic maps from Stein spaces to suitable complex manifolds. The goal is to understand when the obstructions to approximation or interpolation are purely topological. We propose a definition of an algebraic Oka property, which is stronger than the analytic Oka property. We review the known examples of algebraic manifolds satisfying the algebraic Oka property and add a new class of examples: smooth nondegenerate toric varieties. On the other hand, we show that the algebraic ana…
We survey some recent developments in the study of canonical Kähler metrics on algebraic varieties and their relation with stability in algebraic geometry.
We construct examples to show that having nef cotangent bundle is not preserved under finite ramified covers. Our examples also show that a projective manifold with Stein universal cover may not have nef cotangent bundle, disproving a conjecture of Liu-Maxim-Wang.
We generalize results of P. Schneider and U. Stuhler for GL_l+1 to a reductive algebraic group G defined and split over a non-archimedean local field K. Following their lines, we prove that the generalized Steinberg representations of G with coefficients in any abelian group are cyclic. When G is semi-simple of adjoint type, we give an expression of these representations, whenever it is possible and in particular for those that are of maximal degree, in terms of the parahoric subgroups of G.
We will show that the cotangent bundle of a manifold whose free loopspace homology grows exponentially is not symplectomorphic to any smooth affine variety. We will also show that the unit cotangent bundle of such a manifold is not Stein fillable by a Stein domain whose completion is symplectomorphic to a smooth affine variety. For instance, these results hold for end connect sums of simply connected manifolds whose cohomology with coefficients in some field has at least two generators. We use an invariant called the growth rate of symplectic homology to prove this result.
In this paper we study certain homogeneous spaces, which we call generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties. The main aim is to characterise the canonical divisor of generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties in terms of group representations. Affine Stiefel algebraic varieties and in particular $S^{n}$ are two special cases of the generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties.
We study Minkowski sums and Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. Specifically we explore when these are varieties and examine their properties in terms of those of the original varieties.
In this article we give a homological characterization of the topology of Stein spaces over any valued base field. In particular, when working over the field of complex numbers, we obtain a characterization of the usual Euclidean (transcendental) topology of complex analytic spaces. For non-Archimedean base fields the topology we characterize coincides with the topology of the Berkovich analytic space associated to a non-Archimedean Stein algebra. Because the characterization we used is borrowed from a definition in derived geometry, this work should be read as a contribution towards the found…
For every fibration $f : X \to B$ with $X$ a compact Kähler manifold, $B$ a smooth projective curve, and a general fiber of $f$ an abelian variety, we prove that $f$ has an algebraic approximation.
We show that every affine or projective algebraic variety defined over the field of real or complex numbers is homeomorphic to a variety defined over the field of algebraic numbers. We construct such a homeomorphism by choosing a small deformation of the coefficients of the original equations. This method is based on the properties of Zariski equisingular families of varieties. Moreover we construct an algorithm, that, given a system of equations defining a variety $V$, produces a system of equations with algebraic coefficients of a variety homeomorphic to $V$
We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.
We address the question of finding algebraic properties that are respectively equivalent, for a morphism between algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, to be an homeomorphism for the Zariski topology and for a strong topology that we introduce. Our answers involve a study of seminormalization and saturation for morphisms between algebraic varieties, together with an interpretation in terms of continuous rational functions on the closed points of an algebraic variety. The continuity refers to the strong topology which is the usual Euclidean topology in th…
In this paper, we establish the following version at infinity of Whitney's theorem [6, 7]: Geometric and algebraic tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties coincide. The proof of this fact is based on a geometric characterization of geometric tangent cones at infinity and using the global Łojasiewicz inequality with explicit exponents for complex algebraic varieties. We also show that tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties can be computed using Gröbner bases.
We extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic C-varieties endowed with effective torus actions to the real setting. In particular, we focus on actions of quasi-split real tori, in which case we obtain a simpler presentation.
This is a report on some of the main developments in birational geometry in the last few years focusing on the minimal model program, Fano varieties, singularities and related topics, in characteristic zero.
This article proposes a generalization of tautological rings introduced by Beauville and Moonen for Jacobians. The main result is that, under certain hypotheses, the special subvarieties of Prym varieties are algebraically equivalent and their classes belong to the tautological ring.
We discuss relations between certain invariants of varieties in positive characteristic, like the a-number and the height of the Artin-Mazur formal group. We calculate the a-number for Fermat surfaces
We define the class of admissible linear embeddings of flag varieties. The definition is given in the general language of algebraic geometry. We then prove that an admissible linear embedding of flag varieties has a certain explicit form in terms of linear algebra. This result enables us to show that any direct limit of admissible embeddings of flag varieties is isomorphic to an ind-variety of generalized flags as defined in [DP]. These latter ind-varieties have been introduced in terms of the ind-group SL(\infty) (respectively, O(\infty) or Sp(\infty) for isotropic generalized flags), and the…
In this paper, we prove effective upper bounds for effective sections of line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties in terms of the volumes. They are effective versions of the Hilbert--Samuel formula and the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula.
We give a short appreciation of Mumford's work on the moduli of varieties by putting it into historical context. By reviewing earlier works we highlight the innovations introduced by Mumford. Then we discuss recent developments whose origins can be traced back to Mumford's ideas.
We prove that a quasi-finite endomorphism of an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, that is injective on the complement of a closed subvariety, is an automorphism. We also prove that an endomorphism of complex algebraic variety that is injective on the complement of a closed subvariety of codimension at least $2$, is an automorphism.
Lee and Pandharipande studied a "double point" algebraic cobordism theory of varieties equipped with vector bundles, and speculated that some features of that story might extend to the case of varieties with principal G-bundles. This note shows that this expectation holds rationally, and more generally after inverting the torsion index of the group, for reductive G. We show that (after inverting the torsion index) the full theory for bundles on varieties is an extension of scalars of standard algebraic cobordism, that the theory for a point is dual to Omega^*(BG), and describe how the theory f…
