We consider the question of approximating any real number $α$ by sums of $n$ rational numbers $\frac{a_1}{q_1} + \frac{a_2}{q_2} + ... + \frac{a_n}{q_n}$ with denominators $1 \leq q_1, q_2, ..., q_n \leq N$. This leads to an inquiry on approximating a real number by rational numbers with a prescribed number of prime factors in the denominator.

Given a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ and $P\in X(k)$, the first author conjectured that in a precise sense, any sequence that approximates $P$ sufficiently well must lie on a rational curve. We prove this conjecture for smooth split toric surfaces conditional on Vojta's conjecture. More generally, we show that if $X$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal split toric variety of arbitrary dimension, then $P$ is better approximated by points on a rational curve than by any Zariski dense sequence.

Let $C$ be the middle third Cantor set and $μ$ be the $\frac{\log 2}{\log 3}$-dimensional Hausdorff measure restricted to $C$. In this paper we study approximations of elements of $C$ by dyadic rationals. Our main result implies that for $μ$ almost every $x\in C$ we have $$\#\left\{1\leq n\leq N:\left|x-\frac{p}{2^n}\right| \leq \frac{1}{n^{0.01}\cdot 2^{n}}\textrm{ for some }p\in\mathbb{N}\right\}\sim 2\sum_{n=1}^{N}n^{-0.01}.$$ This improves upon a recent result of Allen, Chow, and Yu which gives a sub-logarithmic improvement over the trivial approximation rate.

This paper deals with two main topics related to Diophantine approximation. Firstly, we show that if a point on an algebraic variety is approximable by rational vectors to a sufficiently large degree, the approximating vectors must lie in the topological closure of the rational points on the variety. In many interesting cases, in particular if the set of rational points on the variety is finite, this closure does not exceed the set of rational points on the variety itself. In this paper, we consider the intrinsic Diophantine approximation on the triadic Cantor set $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. approximating the points in $\mathcal{K}$ by rational numbers inside $\mathcal{K}$, a question posed by K. Mahler. By using another height function of a rational number in $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. the denominator obtained from its periodic 3-adic expansion, a complete metric theory for this variant intrinsic Diophantine approximation is presented which yields the divergence theory of Mahler's original question.

Consider the classical problem of rational simultaneous approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. The optimal lower bound on the gap between the induced ordinary and uniform approximation exponents has been established by Marnat and Moshchevitin in 2018. A famous conjecture of Littlewood (c. 1930) concerns approximating two real numbers by rationals of the same denominator, multiplying the errors. In a lesser-known paper, Wang and Yu (1981) established an asymptotic formula for the number of such approximations, valid almost always. Using the quantitative Koukoulopoulos--Maynard theorem of Aistleitner--Borda--Hauke, together with bounds arising from the theory of Bohr sets, we deduce lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for inhomogeneous and fibre refinements of the problem.
Diophantine approximation is the problem of approximating a real number by rational numbers. We propose a version of this in which the numerators are approximately related to the denominators by a Laurent polynomial. Our definition is motivated by the problem of constructing strict deformation quantizations of symplectic manifolds.
