We prove uniform bounds on moments X_a = \sum_{m}{m^a f_m(x,t)} of the Smoluchowski coagulation equations with diffusion, valid in any dimension. If the collision propensities α(n,m) of mass n and mass m particles grow more slowly than (n+m)(d(n) + d(m)), and the diffusion rate d(\cdot) is non-increasing and satisfies m^{-b_1} \leq d(m) \leq m^{-b_2} for some b_1 and b_2 satisfying 0 \leq b_2 < b_1 < \infty, then any weak solution satisfies X_a \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d \times [0,T]) \cap L^1(\mathbb{R}^d \times [0,T]) for every a \in \mathbb{N} and T \in (0,\infty), (provided that certain moments of the initial data are finite). As a consequence, we infer that these conditions are sufficient to ensure uniqueness of a weak solution and its conservation of mass.
We study the validity of a Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation for a class of wave equations in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ subject to a state-dependent damping and perturbed by a multiplicative noise. We prove that in the small mass limit the solution converges to the solution of a stochastic quasilinear parabolic equation where a noise-induced extra drift is created.
The Smoluchowski equation is a system of partial differential equations modelling the diffusion and binary coagulation of a large collection of tiny particles. The mass parameter may be indexed either by positive integers, or by positive reals, these corresponding to the discrete or the continuous form of the equations. In dimension at least 3, we derive the continuous Smoluchowski PDE as a kinetic limit of a microscopic model of Brownian particles liable to coalesce, using a similar method to that used to derive the discrete form of the equations in Hammond and Rezakhanlou [4]. The principal …
We study Smoluchowski-Poisson equation in two space dimensions provided with Dirichlet boundary condition for the Poisson part. For this equation several profiles of blowup solution have been noticed. Here we show the residual vanishing.
We study Smoluchowski-Poisson equation in two space dimensions provided with Dirichlet boundary condition for the Poisson part. For this equation several profiles of blowup solution have been noticed. Here we show collapse mass quantization with possible vanishing term.
We consider Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with a kernel of the form $K = 2 + εW$, where $W$ is a bounded kernel of homogeneity zero. For small $ε$, we prove that solutions approach a universal, unique self-similar profile for large times, at almost the same speed as the constant kernel case (the speed is exponential when self-similar variables are considered). All the constants we use can be explicitly estimated. Our method is a constructive perturbation analysis of the equation, based on spectral results on the linearisation of the constant kernel case. To our knowledge, this is the fir…
Existence and non-existence of integrable stationary solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with source are investigated when the source term is integrable with an arbitrary support in (0, $\infty$). Besides algebraic upper and lower bounds, a monotonicity condition is required for the coagulation kernel. Connections between integrability properties of the source and the corresponding stationary solutions are also studied.
The existence of self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation has so far only been established for the solvable and the diagonal kernel. In this paper we prove the existence of such self-similar solutions for continuous kernels $K$ that are homogeneous of degree $γ\in [0,1)$ and satisfy $K(x,y) \leq C (x^γ + y^γ)$. More precisely, for any $ρ\in (γ,1)$ we establish the existence of a continuous weak self-similar profile with decay $x^{-(1{+}ρ)}$ as $x \to \infty$.
We consider self-similar solutions with finite mass to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for rate kernels that have homogeneity zero but are possibly singular such as Smoluchowski's original kernel. We prove pointwise exponential decay of these solutions under rather mild assumptions on the kernel. If the support of the kernel is sufficiently large around the diagonal we also proof that $\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{1}{x} \log \Big(\frac{1}{f(x)}\Big)$ exists. In addition we prove properties of the prefactor if the kernel is uniformly bounded below.
Global weak solutions to the continuous Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) are constructed for coagulation kernels featuring an algebraic singularity for small volumes and growing linearly for large volumes, thereby extending previous results obtained in Norris (1999) and Cueto Camejo \& Warnecke (2015). In particular, linear growth at infinity of the coagulation kernel is included and the initial condition may have an infinite second moment. Furthermore, all weak solutions (in a suitable sense) including the ones constructed herein are shown to be mass-conserving, a property which was pr…
We show the existence of self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for homogeneous kernels satisfying $C_1 \left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)\leq K\left(x,y\right)\leq C_2\left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)$ with $a>0$ and $b<1$. This covers especially the case of Smoluchowski's classical kernel $K(x,y)=(x^{1/3} + y^{1/3})(x^{-1/3} + y^{-1/3})$. For the proof of existence we first consider some regularized kernel $K_ε$ for which we construct a sequence of solutions $h_ε$. In a second step we pass to the limit $ε\to 0$ to obtain a solution for the original…
We study coupled non-linear parabolic equations for a fluid described by a material density and a temperature, both functions of space and time. In one dimension, we find some stationary solutions corresponding to fixing the temperature on the boundary, with no-escape boundary conditions for the material. For the special case, where the temperature on the boundary is the same at both ends, the linearised equations for small perturbations about a stationary solution are derived; they are subject to the boundary conditions, Dirichlet for the temperature and no-flow conditions for the material. T…
We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions of Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with multiplicative kernel of homogeneity $2lλ\in (0,1)$. We establish rigorously that such solutions exhibit a singular behavior of the form $x^{-(1+2λ)}$ as $x \to 0$. This property had been conjectured, but only weaker results had been available up to now.
We study the small Deborah number limit of the Doi-Onsager equation for the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals without hydrodynamics. This is a Smoluchowski-type equation that characterizes the evolution of a number density function, depending upon both particle position $x\in \mathbb{R}^d(d=2,3)$ and orientation vector $m\in\mathbb{S}^2$ (the unit sphere). We prove that, when the Deborah number tends to zero, the family of solutions with rough initial data near local equilibria will converge strongly to a local equilibrium distribution prescribed by a weak solution of the harmonic map heat f…
We establish the global well-posedness of overdamped dynamic density functional theory (DDFT): a nonlinear, nonlocal integro-partial differential equation used in statistical mechanical models of colloidal fluids, and other applications including nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems and opinion dynamics. With nonlinear no-flux boundary conditions, we determine the existence and uniqueness of the weak density and flux, subject to two-body hydrodynamic interactions (HI). We also show that the density is Lyapunov stable with respect to the usual (Helmholtz) free energy functional. Principally, th…
Motivated by a phenomenon of phase transition in a model of alignment of self-propelled particles, we obtain a kinetic mean-field equation which is nothing else than the Doi equation (also called Smoluchowski equation) with dipolar potential. In a self-contained article, using only basic tools, we analyze the dynamics of this equation in any dimension. We first prove global well-posedness of this equation, starting with an initial condition in any Sobolev space. We then compute all possible steady-states. There is a threshold for the noise parameter: over this threshold, the only equilibrium i…
We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernel $K(ξ,η)= (ξη)^λ$ with $λ\in (0,1/2)$. It is known that such self-similar solutions $g(x)$ satisfy that $x^{-1+2λ} g(x)$ is bounded above and below as $x \to 0$. In this paper we describe in detail via formal asymptotics the qualitative behavior of a suitably rescaled function $h(x)=h_λ x^{-1+2λ} g(x)$ in the limit $λ\to 0$. It turns out that $h \sim 1+ C x^{λ/2} \cos(\sqrtλ \log x)$ as $x \to 0$. As $x$ becomes larger $h$ develops peaks of height $1/λ$ that are separated by large regions wher…
