We consider a polymer, with monomer locations modeled by the trajectory of a Markov chain, in the presence of a potential that interacts with the polymer when it visits a particular site 0. We assume that probability of an excursion of length $n$ is given by $n^{-c}ϕ(n)$ for some $1<c<2$ and slowly varying $ϕ$. Disorder is introduced by having the interaction vary from one monomer to another, as a constant $u$ plus i.i.d. mean-0 randomness. There is a critical value of $u$ above which the polymer is pinned, placing a positive fraction (called the contact fraction) of its monomers at 0 with high probability. To see the effect of disorder on the depinning transition, we compare the contact fraction and free energy (as functions of $u$) to the corresponding annealed system. We show that for $c>3/2$, at high temperature, the quenched and annealed curves differ significantly only in a very small neighborhood of the critical point--the size of this neighborhood scales as $β^{1/(2c-3)}$ where $β$ is the inverse temperature. For $c<3/2$, given $ε>0$, for sufficiently high temperature the quenched and annealed curves are within a factor of $1-ε$ for all $u$ near the critical point; in particular the quenched and annealed critical points are equal. For $c=3/2$ the regime depends on the slowly varying function $ϕ$.
We consider a polymer, with monomer locations modeled by the trajectory of an underlying Markov chain, in the presence of a potential thatinteracts with the polymer when it visits a particular site 0. When the excursions of the underlying chain have a finite mean but no finite exponential moment, …
We consider a polymer with configuration modelled by the trajectory of a Markov chain, interacting with a potential of form $u+V_n$ when it visits a particular state 0 at time $n$, with $\{V_n\}$ representing i.i.d. quenched disorder. There is a critical value of $u$ above which the polymer is pinned by the potential. A particular case not covered in a number of previous studies is that of loop exponent one, in which the probability of an excursion of length $n$ takes the form $ϕ(n)/n$ for some slowly varying $ϕ$; this includes simple random walk in two dimensions. We show that in this case, a…
In this paper we consider a model which describes a polymer chain interacting with an infinity of equi-spaced linear interfaces. The distance between two consecutive interfaces is denoted by T = T_N and is allowed to grow with the size N of the polymer. When the polymer receives a positive reward for touching the interfaces, its asymptotic behavior has been derived in a previous paper, showing that a transition occurs when T_N \approx log(N). In the present paper, we deal with the so-called depinning case, i.e., the polymer is repelled rather than attracted by the interfaces. Using techniques …
We consider models of directed random polymers interacting with a defect line, which are known to undergo a pinning/depinning (or localization/delocalization) phase transition. We are interested in critical properties and we prove, in particular, finite--size upper bounds on the order parameter (the {\em contact fraction}) in a window around the critical point, shrinking with the system size. Moreover, we derive a new inequality relating the free energy $\tf$ and an annealed exponent $μ$ which describes extreme fluctuations of the polymer in the localized region. For the particular case of a $…
By extending the Kac-Rice approach to manifolds of finite internal dimension, we show that the mean number $\left\langle\mathcal{N}_\mathrm{tot}\right\rangle$ of all possible equilibria (i.e. force-free configurations, a.k.a. equilibrium points) of an elastic line (directed polymer), confined in a harmonic well and submitted to a quenched random Gaussian potential in dimension $d=1+1$, grows exponentially $\left\langle\mathcal{N}_\mathrm{tot}\right\rangle\sim\exp{(r\,L)}$ with its length $L$. The growth rate $r$ is found to be directly related to the generalised Lyapunov exponent (GLE) which i…
We consider general disordered models of pinning of directed polymers on a defect line. This class contains in particular the $(1+1)$--dimensional interface wetting model, the disordered Poland--Scheraga model of DNA denaturation and other $(1+d)$--dimensional polymers in interaction with flat interfaces. We consider also the case of copolymers with adsorption at a selective interface. Under quite general conditions, these models are known to have a (de)localization transition at some critical line in the phase diagram. In this work we prove in particular that, as soon as disorder is present, …
Very recently, Junk [11] showed that for directed polymers in bounded random environments, the weak disorder (uniform integrable) phase implies that the polymer martingale is bounded in $L^p$ for some $p>1$ and also in $L^q$ for some $q<0$. Here, we establish this characterization of the weak disorder phase without requiring the boundedness assumption on the environments.
We study models for a directed polymer in a random environment (DPRE) in which the polymer traverses a hierarchical diamond graph and the random environment is defined through random variables attached to the vertices. For these models, we prove a distributional limit theorem for the partition function in a limiting regime wherein the system grows as the coupling of the polymer to the random environment is appropriately attenuated. The sequence of diamond graphs is determined by a choice of a branching number $b\in \{2,3,\ldots\}$ and segmenting number $s\in \{2,3,\ldots\}$, and our focus is o…
We consider the Brownian directed polymer in Poissonian environment in dimension 1+1, under the so-called intermediate disorder regime, which is a crossover regime between the strong and weak disorder regions. We show that, under a diffusive scaling involving different parameters of the system, the renormalized point-to-point partition function of the polymer converges in law to the solution of the stochastic heat equation with Gaussian multiplicative noise. The Poissonian environment provides a natural setting and strong tools, such as the Wiener-Ito chaos expansion, which, applied to the par…
We show that the partition function of the multi-layer semi-discrete directed polymer converges in the intermediate disorder regime to the partition function for the multi-layer continuum polymer introduced by O'Connell and Warren. This verifies, modulo a previously hidden constant, an outstanding conjecture proposed by Corwin and Hammond. A consequence is the identification of the KPZ line ensemble as logarithms of ratios of consecutive layers of the continuum partition function. Other properties of the continuum partition function, such as continuity, strict positivity and contour integral f…
This note sharpens the smoothing inequality of Giacomin and Toninelli for disordered polymers. This inequality is shown to be valid for any disorder distribution with locally finite exponential moments, and to provide an asymptotically sharp constant for weak disorder. A key tool in the proof is an estimate that compares the effect on the free energy of tilting, respectively, shifting the disorder distribution. This estimate holds in large generality (way beyond disordered polymers) and is of independent interest.
In this note we show that in any dimension $d$, the strong disorder property implies the strong localization property. This is established for a continuous time model of directed polymers in a random environment : the parabolic Anderson Model.
The free-energy fluctuations of the discrete directed polymer in 1+1 dimensions is conjecturally in the Tracy-Widom universality class at all finite temperatures and in the intermediate disorder regime. Seppäläinen's log-gamma polymer was proven to have GUE Tracy-Widom fluctuations in a restricted temperature range by Borodin et. al. (2013). We remove this restriction, and extend this result into the intermediate disorder regime. This result also identifies the scale of fluctuations of the log-gamma polymer in the intermediate disorder regime, and thus verifies a conjecture of Alberts et. al. …
We show that the endpoint large deviation rate function for a continuous-time directed polymer agrees with the rate function of the underlying random walk near the origin in the whole weak disorder phase.
The a.s. existence of a polymer probability in the infinite volume limit is readily obtained under general conditions of weak disorder from standard theory on multiplicative cascades or branching random walk. However, speculations in the case of strong disorder have been mixed. In this note existence of an infinite volume probability is established at critical strong disorder for which one has convergence in probability. Some calculations in support of a specific formula for the a.s. asymptotic variance of the polymer path under strong disorder are also provided.
In this paper, we consider directed polymers in random environment with long range jumps in discrete space and time. We extend to this case some techniques, results and classifications known in the usual short range case. However, some properties are drastically different when the underlying random walk belongs to the domain of attraction of an $\a$-stable law. For instance, we construct natural examples of directed polymers in random environment which experience weak disorder in low dimension.
We study a model of directed polymers with an exponentially recurrent Markov chain and an indefinitely divisible random environment. We prove that the normalized partition function converges exponentially fast towards zero at all temperatures.
For a directed polymer model in random environment, a characterization of the weak disorder phase in terms of the moment of the renormalized partition function has been proved in [S. Junk: Communications in Mathematical Physics 389, 1087-1097 (2022)]. We extend this characterization to a large class of unbounded environments which includes many commonly used distributions.
We show that the weak disorder phase for the directed polymer model in a bounded random environment is characterized by the integrability of the running supremum $\sup_{n\in \mathbb N}W_n^β$ of the associated martingale $(W_n^β)_{n\in \mathbb N}$. Using this characterization, we prove that $(W_n^β)_{n\in \mathbb N}$ is $L^p$-bounded in the whole weak disorder phase, for some $p>1$. The argument generalizes to non-negative martingales with a certain product structure.
We consider the convergence of partition functions and endpoint density for the half-space directed polymer model in dimension $1+1$ in the intermediate disorder regime as considered for the full space model by Alberts, Khanin and Quastel in [AKQ]. By scaling the inverse temperature like $βn^{-1/4}$, the point-to-point partition function converges to the chaos series for the solution to stochastic heat equation with Robin boundary condition and delta initial data. We also apply our convergence results to the exact-solvable log-gamma directed polymer model in a half-space.
We consider directed polymers in random environment on the lattice Z d at small inverse temperature and dimension d $\ge$ 3. Then, the normalized partition function W n is a regular martingale with limit W. We prove that n (d--2)/4 (W n -- W)/W n converges in distribution to a Gaussian law. Both the polynomial rate of convergence and the scaling with the martingale W n are different from those for polymers on trees.
We consider a random walk in a random potential, which models a situation of a random polymer and we study the annealed and quenched costs to perform long crossings from a point to a hyperplane. These costs are measured by the so called Lyapounov norms. We identify situations where the point-to-hyperplane annealed and quenched Lyapounov norms are different. We also prove that in these cases the polymer path exhibits localization.
We study a polymer model on hierarchical lattices very close to the one introduced and studied in \cite{DGr, CD}. For this model, we prove the existence of free energy and derive the necessary and sufficient condition for which very strong disorder holds for all $\gb$, and give some accurate results on the behavior of the free energy at high-temperature. We obtain these results by using a combination of fractional moment method and change of measure over the environment to obtain an upper bound, and second moment method to get a lower bound. We also get lower bounds on the fluctuation exponent…
In this paper, we consider directed polymers in random environment with discrete space and time. For transverse dimension at least equal to 3, we prove that diffusivity holds for the path in the full weak disorder region, i.e., where the partition function differs from its annealed value only by a non-vanishing factor. Deep inside this region, we also show that the quenched averaged energy has fluctuations of order 1. In complete generality (arbitrary dimension and temperature), we prove monotonicity of the phase diagram in the temperature.
In these proceedings, we first summarize some general properties of phase transitions in the presence of quenched disorder, with emphasis on the following points: the need to distinguish typical and averaged correlations, the possible existence of two correlation length exponents $ν$, the general bound $ν_{FS} \geq 2/d$, the lack of self-averaging of thermodynamic observables at criticality, the scaling properties of the distribution of pseudo-critical temperatures $T_c(i,L)$ over the ensemble of samples of size $L$. We then review our recent works on the critical properties of various delocal…
