Let $(M,g,σ)$ be a compact Riemmannian surface equipped with a spin structure $σ$. For any metric $\tilde{g}$ on $M$, we denote by $μ\_1(\tilde{g})$ (resp. $λ\_1(\tilde{g})$) the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian (resp. the Dirac operator) with respect to the metric $\tilde{g}$. In this paper, we show that $$\inf \frac{λ\_1(\tilde{g})^2}{μ\_1(\tilde{g})} \leqslant {1/2}.$$ where the infimum is taken over the metrics $\tilde{g}$ conformal to $g$. This answer a question asked by Agricola, Ammann and Friedrich
In this paper, we prove some analogues of Payne-Polya-Weinberger, Hile-Protter and Yang's inequalities for Dirichlet (discrete) Laplace eigenvalues on any subset in the integer lattice $\Z^n.$ This partially answers a question posed by Chung and Oden.
In this paper, we would like to give an answer to \textbf{Problem 1} below issued firstly in [J. Mao, Eigenvalue estimation and some results on finite topological type, Ph.D. thesis, IST-UTL, 2013]. In fact, by imposing some conditions on the mean curvature of the initial hypersurface and the coefficient function of the forcing term of a forced mean curvature flow considered here, we can obtain that the first eigenvalues of the Laplace and the $p$-Laplace operators are monotonic under this flow. Surprisingly, during this process, we get an interesting byproduct, that is, without any complicate…
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on $\mathbb S^2$. Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
We compare the eigenvalues of the Dirac and Laplace operator on a two-dimensional torus with respect to the trivial spin structure. In particular, we compute their variation up to order 4 upon deformation of the flat metric, study the corresponding Hamiltonian and discuss several families of examples.
We obtain geometric estimates for the first eigenvalue and the fundamental tone of the p-laplacian on manifolds in terms of admissible vector fields. Also, we defined a new spectral invariant and we show its relation with the geometry of the manifold.
We establish the existence of analytic curves of eigenvalues for the Laplace-Neumann operator through an analytic variation of the metric of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary by means of a new approach rather than Kato's method for unbounded operators. We obtain an expression for the derivative of the curve of eigenvalues, which is used as a device to prove that the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Neumann operator are generically simple in the space $\mathcal{M}^k$ of all $C^k$ Riemannian metrics on $M$. This implies the existence of a residual set of metrics in $\mathcal{M}^k$, which…
The paper introduces a new elliptic operator called the two-radical Laplace operator, which has a positive eigenvalue equal to the positive square root of the eigenvalue of the Laplace operator. The author provide several theorems that serve as counterparts to those associated with the Laplace operator.
In this paper, we prove some isoperimetric bounds for lower order eigenvalues of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on bounded domains of a Euclidean space or a Hadamard manifold, of the Laplacian on closed hypersurfaces of a Euclidean space or a Hadamard manifold, and of a biharmonic Steklov problem on bounded domains of a Euclidean space. Especially, interesting rigidity results can be obtained if sharp bounds were achieved.
By means of a family of counter-examples, it is shown that the Reilly upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator for a compact submanifold in Euclidean space does not work for $n$-dimensional compact spacelike submanifolds of Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime $\mathbb{L}^m$, $m\geq n+2$. We develop a new suitable technique, based on an integral formula on compact spacelike sections of the light cone in $\mathbb{L}^m$. Then, a family of extrinsic upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator for a compact spacelike submanifold in $\mathbb{L}^m$ is proved. For each on…
We prove the existence of extremal domains for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in some compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $n \geq 2$, with volume close to the volume of the manifold. If the first (positive) eigenfunction $ϕ_0$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator over the manifold is a nonconstant function, these domains are close to the complement of geodesic balls of small radius whose center is close to the point where $ϕ_0$ attains its maximum. If $ϕ_0$ is a constant function and $n \geq 4$, these domains are close to the complement of geodesic balls of small radiu…
Let $λ(t)$ be the first eigenvalue of $-Δ+aR\, (a>0)$ under the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds, where $R$ is the scalar curvature. In the Bianchi case, we get the upper and lower bounds of $λ(t)$. In particular, we show that when the the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper re-scaling, $λ^{+}(t)$ approaches zero, where $λ^{+}(t)=\max\{λ(t),0\}$.
We prove inequalities for Laplace eigenvalues of Kaehler manifolds generalising to higher eigenvalues the classical inequality for the first Laplace eigenvalue due to Bourguignon, Li, and Yau in 1994. We also obtain similar inequalities for analytic varieties in Kaehler manifolds.
Eldredge, Gordina and Saloff-Coste recently conjectured that, for a given compact connected Lie group $G$, there is a positive real number $C$ such that $λ_1(G,g)\operatorname{diam}(G,g)^2\leq C$ for all left-invariant metrics $g$ on $G$. In this short note, we establish the conjecture for the small subclass of naturally reductive left-invariant metrics on a compact simple Lie group.
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a flat disc than on any other surface of revoltuion immersed in Euclidean space with the same boundary.
We study the higher spin Dirac operators on 3-dimensional manifolds and show that there exist two Laplace type operators for each associated bundle. Furthermore, we give lower bound estimations for the first eigenvalues of these Laplace type operators.
The known upper bounds for the multiplicities of the Laplace-Beltrami operator eigenvalues on the real projective plane are improved for the eigenvalues with even indexes. Upper bounds for Dirichlet, Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues on the real projective plane with holes are also provided.
By studying the monotonicity of the first nonzero eigenvalues of Laplace and p-Laplace operators on a closed convex hypersurface $M^n$ which evolves under inverse mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the isoperimetric lower bounds for both eigenvalues were founded.
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. In this short note we prove that under certain positive curvature assumptions on the manifold and its boundary the Steklov eigenvalues of the manifold are controlled by the Laplace eigenvalues of the boundary. Additionally, in two dimensions we obtain an upper bound for these Steklov eigenvalues in terms of topology of the surface without any curvature restrictions.
We prove existence and regularity results for the problem of maximization of one Laplace eigenvalue with respect to metrics of same volume lying in a conformal class of a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$.
We prove that in many cases the existence of an extremal metric for some Laplace eigenvalue in a conformal class allows to find extremal metrics in conformal classes close by. As a consequence and as part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
In the present paper several bounds on multiplicities of eigenvalues of the Laplacian operator on surfaces are generalized from the case of either closed surface or simply-connected planar domain to the case of a surface of positive genus with holes.
Let $P$ be a non-negative self-adjoint Laplace type operator acting on sections of a hermitian vector bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold. In this paper we review the close relations between various $P$-related coefficients such as the mollified spectral counting coefficients, the heat trace coefficients, the resolvent trace coefficients, the residues of the spectral zeta function as well as certain Wodzicki residues. We then use the Wodzicki residue to obtain results about the local counting function of operators of Dirac and Laplace type. In particular, we express the second term of the…
In this short note, we prove that conformal classes which are small perturbations of a product conformal class on a product with a standard sphere admit a metric extremal for some Laplace eigenvalue. As part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
In this paper, by extending the notions of harmonic transplantation and harmonic radius in the Heisenberg group, we give an upper bound for the first eigenvalue for the following Dirichlet problem: $$(P_Ω) \left\{ \begin{array}{lllll} -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u & = & λu & \mbox{in} & Ωu & = & 0 & \mbox{on} & \partial Ω, \end{array} \right.$$ where $ Ω$ is a regular bounded domain of $ \mathbb{H}^1$ with smooth boundary and $Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1}$ is the Kohn-Laplace operator. Using the results of P.Pansu which give the relation between the volume of $Ω$ and the perimeter of its boundary. we prove the foll…
It is shown that the estimates obtained by Manfredo P. do Carmo and Detang Zhou, in their paper "Eigenvalue estimate on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds and applications", for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on open manifolds, via an oscillation theorem, can be naturally extended for the semi-elliptic singular operator operator, p-Laplace on manifolds.
We investigate the second Dirac eigenvalue on Riemannian manifolds admitting a Killing spinor. In small dimensions the whole Dirac spectrum depends on special eigenvalues on functions and 1-forms. We compute and discuss the formulas in dimension $n = 7$.
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
We study the existence and properties of metrics maximising the first Laplace eigenvalue among conformal metrics of unit volume on Riemannian surfaces. We describe a general approach to this problem and its higher eigenvalue versions via the direct method of calculus of variations. The principal results include the general regularity properties of $λ_k$-extremal metrics and the existence of a partially regular $λ_1$-maximiser.
We build new examples of extremal domains with small prescribed volume for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in some Riemannian manifold with boundary. These domains are close to half balls of small radius centered at a nondegenerate critical point of the mean curvature function of the boundary of the manifold, and their boundary intersects the boundary of the manifold orthogonally.
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on an annulus than on any other surface of revolution in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the same boundary. This is established by defining a sequence of shrinking cylinders about the axis of symmetry and proving that flattening a surface outside of each cylinder successively increases the eigenvalues. A similar argument shows that the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a half-helicoid than on any other screw surface in $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ with the same boundary.
We prove a lower estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact locally reducible Riemannian spin manifold with positive scalar curvature. We determine also the universal covers of the manifolds on which the smallest possible eigenvalue is attained.
In this note, we prove lower and upper bounds for Dirac operators of submanifolds in certain ambient manifolds in terms of conformal and extrinsic quantities.
For a compact spin manifold $M$ isometrically embedded into Euclidean space, we derive the extrinsic estimates from above and below for eigenvalues of the Dirac operators, which depend on the second fundamental form of the embedding. We also show the bounds of the ratio of the eigenvalues.
In Kähler-Einstein case of positive scalar curvature and even complex dimension, an improved lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator is given. It is shown by a general construction that there are manifolds for which this new lower bound itself is the first eigenvalue.
We prove a lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold depending on the scalar curvature as well as a chosen Codazzi tensor. The inequality generalizes the classical estimate from [2].
In this paper we will prove new extrinsic upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on an isometrically immersed surface $M^2 \hookrightarrow {\Bbb R}^3$ as well as intrinsic bounds for 2-dimensional compact manifolds of genus zero and genus one. Moreover, we compare the different estimates of the eigenvalue of the Dirac operator for special families of metrics.
In two previous papers, we started a study of the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on compact spin symmetric spaces, providing, for symmetric spaces of "inner" type, a formula giving this first eigenvalue in terms of the algebraic data of the groups involved. We conclude here that study by giving the explicit expression of the first eigenvalue for "outer" compact spin symmetric spaces.
We review some recent results concerning lower eigenvalues estimates for the Dirac operator [6, 7]. We show that Friedrich's inequality can be improved via certain well-chosen symmetric tensors and provide an application to Sasakian spin manifolds.
In this paper, we extend the Hijazi inequality, involving the Energy-Momentum tensor, for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on $Spin^c$ manifolds without boundary. The limiting case is then studied and an example is given.
In this note we show that every compact spin manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ can be given a Riemannian metric for which a finite part of the spectrum of the Dirac operator consists of arbitrarily prescribed eigenvalues with multiplicity 1.
Under two boundary conditions, the generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition and the modified generalized -Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition, we get the lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the fundamental Dirac operator on compact spin manifolds with nonempty boundary.
We give a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a compact domain of a Riemannian spin manifold under the $\MIT$ bag boundary condition. The limiting case is characterized by the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor.
Using Weitzenböck techniques on any compact Riemannian spin manifold we derive inequalities that involve a real parameter and join the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator with curvature terms. The discussion of these inequalities yields vanishing theorems for the kernel of the Dirac operator $D$ and lower bounds for the spectrum of $D^2$ if the curvature satisfies certain conditions.
In this paper, we give an optimal lower bound for the eigenvalues of the basic Dirac operator on a quaternion-Kahler foliation. The limiting case is characterized by the existence of quaternion-Kahler Killing spinors. We end this paper by giving some examples.
Eigenvalue estimate for the Dirac-Witten operator is given on bounded domains (with smooth boundary) of spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying the dominant energy condition, under four natural boundary conditions (MIT, APS, modified APS, and chiral conditions). This result is a generalisation of Friedrich's inequality for the usual Dirac operator. The limiting cases are also investigated.
We prove a new lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold by refined Weitzenböck techniques. It applies to manifolds with harmonic curvature tensor and depends on the Ricci tensor. Examples show how it behaves compared to other known bounds.
In this paper we present an explicit construction for the fundamental solution to the Dirac and Laplace operator on some non-orientable conformally flat manifolds. We first treat a class of projective cylinders and tori where we can study monogenic sections with values in different pin bundles. Then we discuss the Möbius strip, the Klein bottle and higher dimensional generalizations of them. We present integral representation formulas together with some elementary tools of harmonic analysis on these manifolds.
We study some similarities between almost product Riemannian structures and almost Hermitian structures. Inspired by the similarities, we prove lower eigenvalue estimates for the Dirac operator on compact Riemannian spin manifolds with locally product structures. We also provide some examples (limiting manifolds) for the limiting case of the estimates.
In this paper, we obtain a new abstract formula relating eigenvalues of a self-adjoint operator to two families of symmetric and skew-symmetric operators and their commutators. This formula generalizes earlier ones obtained by Harrell, Stubbe, Hook, Ashbaugh, Hermi, Levitin and Parnovski. We also show how one can use this abstract formulation both for giving dierent and simpler proofs for all the known results obtained for the eigenvalues of a power of the Laplace operator (i.e. the Dirichlet Laplacian, the clamped plate problem for the bilaplacian and more generally for the polyharmonic probl…
Using the definition of a Finsler--Laplacian given by the first author, we show that two bi-Lipschitz Finsler metrics have a controlled spectrum. We deduce from that several generalizations of Riemannian results. In particular, we show that the spectrum on Finsler surfaces is controlled above by a constant depending on the topology of the surface and on the quasireversibility constant of the metric. In contrast to Riemannian geometry, we then give examples of highly non-reversible metrics on surfaces with arbitrarily large first eigenvalue.
