A k-digraph is an orientation of a multi-graph that is without loops and contains at most k edges between any pair of distinct vertices. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of non-negative integers in non-decreasing order to be a sequence of numbers, called marks (k-scores), attached to vertices of a k-digraph. We characterize irreducible mark sequences in k-digraphs and uniquely realizable mark sequences in 2-digraphs.
Skolem and Langford sequences and their many generalizations have applications in numerous areas. The $\otimes_h$-product is a generalization of the direct product of digraphs. In this paper we use the $\otimes_h$-product and super edge-magic digraphs to construct an exponential number of Langford sequences with certain order and defect. We also apply this procedure to extended Skolem sequences.
We show that for each η>0 every digraph G of sufficiently large order n is Hamiltonian if its out- and indegree sequences d^+_1\le ... \le d^+_n and d^- _1 \le ... \le d^-_n satisfy (i) d^+_i \geq i+ ηn or d^-_{n-i- ηn} \geq n-i and (ii) d^-_i \geq i+ ηn or d^+_{n-i- ηn} \geq n-i for all i < n/2. This gives an approximate solution to a problem of Nash-Williams concerning a digraph analogue of Chvátal's theorem. In fact, we prove the stronger result that such digraphs G are pancyclic.
A mixed graph can be seen as a type of digraph containing some edges (two opposite arcs). Here we introduce the concept of sequence mixed graphs, which is a generalization of both sequence graphs and iterated line digraphs. These structures are proven to be useful in the problem of constructing dense graphs or digraphs, and this is related to the degree/diameter problem. Thus, our generalized approach gives rise to graphs that have also good ratio order/diameter. Moreover, we propose a general method for obtaining a sequence mixed digraph by identifying some vertices of a certain iterated line…
Nonstandard graphs have been defined and examined in prior works. The present work does the same for nonstandard digraphs. Since digraphs have more structure than do graphs, the present discussion requires more complicated definitions and yields a variety of results peculiar to nonstandard digraphs. A nonstandard digraph can be obtained by means of an ultrapower construction based on a sequence of digraphs or more elegantly by using the transfer principle. We use either or both techniques in particular circumstances. As special cases, we have the enlargement of a single infinite digraph and al…
We study sequences of optimal walks of a growing length, in weighted digraphs, or equivalently, sequences of entries of max-algebraic matrix powers with growing exponents. It is known that these sequences are eventually periodic when the digraphs are strongly connected. The transient of such periodicity depends, in general, both on the size of digraph and on the magnitude of the weights. In this paper, we show that some bounds on the indices of periodicity of (unweighted) digraphs, such as the bounds of Wielandt, Dulmage-Mendelsohn, Schwarz, Kim and Gregory-Kirkland-Pullman, apply to the weigh…
The principal permanent rank characteristic sequence is a binary sequence $r_0 r_1 \ldots r_n$ where $r_k = 1$ if there exists a principal square submatrix of size $k$ with nonzero permanent and $r_k = 0$ otherwise, and $r_0 = 1$ if there is a zero diagonal entry. A characterization is provided for all principal permanent rank sequences obtainable by the family of nonnegative matrices as well as the family of nonnegative symmetric matrices. Constructions for all realizable sequences are provided. Results for skew-symmetric matrices are also included.
In this paper, we extend the results given by Park {\em et al.} \cite{ppk} by studying the convergence of the matrix sequence $\{Γ(A^m)\}_{m=1}^\infty$ for a matrix $A \in \mathcal{B}_n$ the digraph of which is linearly connected with an arbitrary number of strong components. In the process for generalization, we concretize ideas behind their arguments. We completely characterize $A$ for which $\{Γ(A^m)\}_{m=1}^\infty$ converges. Then we find its limit when all of the irreducible diagonal blocks are of order at least two. We go further to characterize $A$ for which the limit of $\{Γ(A^m)\}_{m=…
We consider the following fundamental realization problem of directed graphs. Given a sequence $S:={a_1 \choose b_1},\dots,{a_n \choose b_n}$ with $a_i,b_i\in \mathbb{Z}_0^+.$ Does there exist a digraph (no loops and no parallel arcs are allowed)$G=(V,A)$ with a labeled vertex set $V:=\{v_1,\dots,v_n\}$ such that for all $v_i \in V$ indegree and outdegree of $v_i$ match exactly the given numbers $a_i$ and $b_i$, respectively? There exist two known approaches solving this problem in polynomial running time. One first approach of Kleitman and Wang (1973) uses recursive algorithms to construct di…
Let $Γ=$Cay$(G,T)$ be a Cayley digraph over a finite Abelian group $G$ with respect the generating set $T\not\ni0$. $Γ$ has order ord$(Γ)=|G|=n$ and degree deg$(Γ)=|T|=d$. Let $k(Γ)$ be the diameter of $Γ$ and denote $κ(d,n)=\min\{k(Γ):~\textrm{ord}(Γ)=n,\textrm{deg}(Γ)=d\}$. We give a closed expression, $\ell(d,n)$, of a tight lower bound of $κ(d,n)$ by using the so called {\em solid density} introduced by Fiduccia, Forcade and Zito. A digraph $Γ$ of degree $d$ is called {\em tight} when $k(Γ)=κ(d,|Γ|)=\ell(d,|Γ|)$ holds. Recently, the {\em Dilating Method} has been developed to derive a sequ…
We generalize the class of split graphs to the directed case and show that these split digraphs can be identified from their degree sequences. The first degree sequence characterization is an extension of the concept of splittance to directed graphs, while the second characterization says a digraph is split if and only if its degree sequence satisfies one of the Fulkerson inequalities (which determine when an integer-pair sequence is digraphic) with equality.
Computing the directed path-width of a directed graph is an NP-hard problem. Even for digraphs of maximum semi-degree 3 the problem remains hard. We propose a decomposition of an input digraph G=(V,A) by a number k of sequences with entries from V, such that (u,v) in A if and only if in one of the sequences there is an occurrence of u appearing before an occurrence of v. We present several graph theoretical properties of these digraphs. Among these we give forbidden subdigraphs of digraphs which can be defined by k=1 sequence, which is a subclass of semicomplete digraphs. Given the decompositi…
We provide asymptotic formulae for the numbers of bipartite graphs with given degree sequence, and of loopless digraphs with given in- and out-degree sequences, for a wide range of parameters. Our results cover medium range densities and close the gaps between the results known for the sparse and dense ranges. In the case of bipartite graphs, these results were proved by Greenhill, McKay and Wang in 2006 and by Canfield, Greenhill and McKay in 2008, respectively. Our method also essentially covers the sparse range, for which much less was known in the case of loopless digraphs. For the range o…
We investigate the joint distribution of the vertex degrees in three models of random bipartite graphs. Namely, we can choose each edge with a specified probability, choose a specified number of edges, or specify the vertex degrees in one of the two colour classes. This problem can alternatively be described in terms of the row and sum columns of random binary matrix or the in-degrees and out-degrees of a random digraph, in which case we can optionally forbid loops. It can also be cast as a problem in random hypergraphs, or as a classical occupancy, allocation, or coupon collection problem. In…
A digraph whose degree sequence has a unique vertex labeled realization is called threshold. In this paper we present several characterizations of threshold digraphs and their degree sequences, and show these characterizations to be equivalent. One of the characterizations is new, and allows for a shorter proof of the equivalence of the two known characterizations as well as proving the final characterization which appears without proof in the literature. Using this result, we obtain a new, short proof of the Fulkerson-Chen theorem on degree sequences of general digraphs.
A prominent problem in Graph Theory is to find extremal graphs or digraphs with restrictions in their diameter, degree and number of vertices. Here we obtain a new family of digraphs with minimal diameter, that is, given the number of vertices and out-degree there is no other digraph with a smaller diameter. This new family is called modified cyclic digraphs $MCK(d,\ell)$ and it is derived from the Kautz digraphs $K(d,\ell)$. %It is not common to find non-regular digraphs with minimal diameter given their number of vertices and out-degree. It is well-known that the Kautz digraphs $K(d,\ell)$ h…
By generalizing a recent result of Hong, Liu, and Lai on characterizing the degree-sequences of simple strongly connected directed graphs, a characterization is provided for degree-sequences of simple $k$-node-connected digraphs. More generally, we solve the directed node-connectivity augmentation problem when the augmented digraph is degree-specified and simple. As for edge-connectivity augmentation, we solve the special case when the edge-connectivity is to be increased by one and the augmenting digraph must be simple.
Given a digraph D, the minimum semi-degree of D is the minimum of its minimum indegree and its minimum outdegree. D is k-ordered Hamiltonian if for every ordered sequence of k distinct vertices there is a directed Hamilton cycle which encounters these vertices in this order. Our main result is that every digraph D of sufficiently large order n with minimum semi-degree at least (n+k)/2 -1 is k-ordered Hamiltonian. The bound on the minimum semi-degree is best possible. An undirected version of this result was proved earlier by Kierstead, Sárközy and Selkow.
A generalized de Bruijn digraph generalizes a de Bruijn digraph to the case where the number of vertices need not be a pure power of an integer. Hamiltonian cycles in these digraphs thus generalize regular de~Bruijn cycles, and we will thus refer to them simply as de Bruijn cycles. We define the cross-join to be the graph with all de Bruijn cycles as vertices, there is an edge between two of these vertices if one can be obtained from the other via a cross-join operation. We show that the cross-join graph is connected. This in particular means that any regular de Bruijn cycle can be cross-joine…
A random geometric digraph $G_n$ is constructed by taking $\{X_1,X_2,... X_n\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ independently at random with a common bounded density function. Each vertex $X_i$ is assigned at random a sector $S_i$ of central angle $α$ with inclination $Y_i$, in a circle of radius $r$ (with vertex $X_i$ as the origin). An arc is present from vertex $X_i$ to $X_j$, if $X_j$ falls in $S_i$. Suppose $k$ is fixed and $\{k_n\}$ is a sequence with $1\ll k_n\ll n^{1/2}$, as $n\to\infty$. We prove central limit theorems for $k-$ and $k_n-$nearest neighbor distance of out- and in-degrees in $G_n$. We…
We study the probabilistic properties of the Greatest Increase Grid (GIG) digraph. We compute the probability of a particular sequence of directed edges connecting two random vertices. We compute the joint probability that a set of vertices are all sinks, and derive the mean and variance in the number of sinks in a randomly labeled GIG digraph. Finally, we show that the expected size of the maximum component of vertices converges.
The $d$-Fibonacci digraphs $F(d,k)$, introduced here, have the number of vertices following generalized Fibonacci-like sequences. They can be defined both as digraphs on alphabets and as iterated line digraphs. Here we study some of their nice properties. For instance, $F(2,k)$ has diameter $d+k-2$ and is semi-pancyclic, that is, it has a cycle of every length between 1 and $\ell$, with $\ell\in\{2k-2,2k-1\}$. Moreover, it turns out that several other numbers of $F(d,k)$ (of closed $l$-walks, classes of vertices, etc.) also follow the same linear recurrences as the numbers of vertices of the $…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$. It is well-known that $α(G)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \frac{1}{1+d_i}$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$ and $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $G$. We extend this result to digraphs by showing that if $D$ is a digraph with $n$ vertices, then $ α(D)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \left( \frac{1}{1+d_i^+} + \frac{1}{1+d_i^-} - \frac{1}{1+d_i}\right)$, where $α(D)$ is the maximum size of an acyclic vertex set of $D$. Golowich proved that for any digraph $D$, $χ(D)\leq \lceil \frac{4k}{5} \rceil+2$, where $k=max(Δ^+(D),Δ^-(D))$. We give a short and simple proof for…
This paper presents a method to find new De Bruijn cycles based on ones of lesser order. This is done by mapping a De Bruijn cycle to several vertex disjoint cycles in a De Bruijn digraph of higher order and connecting these cycles into one full cycle. We characterize homomorphisms between De Bruijn digraphs of different orders that allow this construction. These maps generalize the well-known D-morphism of Lempel between De Bruijn digraphs of consecutive orders. Also, an efficient recursive algorithm that yields an exponential number of nonbinary De Bruijn cycles is implemented.
The problem of efficiently sampling from a set of (undirected, or directed) graphs with a given degree sequence has many applications. One approach to this problem uses a simple Markov chain, which we call the switch chain, to perform the sampling. The switch chain is known to be rapidly mixing for regular degree sequences, both in the undirected and directed setting. We prove that the switch chain for undirected graphs is rapidly mixing for any degree sequence with minimum degree at least 1 and with maximum degree $d_{\max}$ which satisfies $3\leq d_{\max}\leq \frac{1}{3}\, \sqrt{M}$, where $…
A digraph D=(V,A) is mediated if, for each pair x,y of distinct vertices of D, either xy belongs to A or yx belongs to A or there is a vertex z such that both xz,yz belong to A. For a digraph D, DELTA(D) is the maximum in-degree of a vertex in D. The "nth mediation number" mu(n) is the minimum of DELTA(D) over all mediated digraphs on n vertices. Mediated digraphs and mu(n) are of interest in the study of quantum nonlocality. We obtain a lower bound f(n) for mu(n) and determine infinite sequences of values of n for which mu(n)=f(n) and mu(n)>f(n), respectively. We derive upper bounds for mu(n)…
The Turan bound is a famous result in graph theory, which relates the independence number of an undirected graph to its edge density. Also the Caro-Wei inequality, which gives a more refined bound in terms of the vertex degree sequence of a graph, might be regarded today as a classical result. We show how these statements can be generalized to directed graphs, thus yielding a bound on directed feedback vertex number in terms of vertex outdegrees and in terms of average outdegree, respectively.
We obtain results on the limiting distribution of the six-length of a random functional graph, also called a functional digraph or random mapping, with given in-degree sequence. The six-length of a vertex $v\in V$ is defined from the associated mapping, $f:V\to V$, to be the maximum $i\in V$ such that the elements $v, f(v), \ldots, f^{i-1}(v)$ are all distinct. This has relevance to the study of algorithms for integer factorisation.
Motivated to find the answers to some of the questions that have occurred in recent papers dealing with Hamiltonian cycles (abbreviated HCs) in some special classes of grid graphs we started the investigation of spanning unions of cycles, the so-called 2-factors, in these graphs (as a generalizations of HCs). For all the three types of graphs from the title and for any integer $m \geq 2$ we propose an algorithm for obtaining a specially designed (transfer) digraph ${\cal D}^*_m$. The problem of enumeration of 2-factors is reduced to the problem of enumerating oriented walks in this digraph. Co…
We consider sparse digraphs generated by the configuration model with given in-degree and out-degree sequences. We establish that with high probability the cover time is linear up to a poly-logarithmic correction. For a large class of degree sequences we determine the exponent $γ\ge 1$ of the logarithm and show that the cover time grows as $n\log^γ(n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. The results are obtained by analysing the extremal values of the stationary distribution of the digraph. In particular, we show that the stationary distribution $π$ is uniform up to a poly-logarithmic factor…
Hajós conjectured in 1968 that every Eulerian \(n\)-vertex graph can be decomposed into at most $\lfloor (n-1)/2\rfloor$ edge-disjoint cycles. This has been confirmed for some special graph classes, but the general case remains open. In a sequence of papers by Bienia and Meyniel (1986), Dean (1986), and Bollobás and Scott (1996) it was analogously conjectured that every \emph{directed} Eulerian graph can be decomposed into $O(n)$ cycles. In this paper, we show that every directed Eulerian graph can be decomposed into $O(n \log Δ)$ disjoint cycles, thus making progress towards the conjecture by…
Let $G=(V,A)$ be a directed graph without parallel arcs, and let $S\subseteq V$ be a set of vertices. Let the sequence $S=S_0\subseteq S_1\subseteq S_2\subseteq\cdots$ be defined as follows: $S_1$ is obtained from $S_0$ by adding all out-neighbors of vertices in $S_0$. For $k\geqslant 2$, $S_k$ is obtained from $S_{k-1}$ by adding all vertices $w$ such that for some vertex $v\in S_{k-1}$, $w$ is the unique out-neighbor of $v$ in $V\setminus S_{k-1}$. We set $M(S)=S_0\cup S_1\cup\cdots$, and call $S$ a \emph{power dominating set} for $G$ if $M(S)=V(G)$. The minimum cardinality of such a set is …
The \emph{graph realization problem} is to find for given nonnegative integers $a_1,\dots,a_n$ a simple graph (no loops or multiple edges) such that each vertex $v_i$ has degree $a_i.$ Given pairs of nonnegative integers $(a_1,b_1),\dots,(a_n,b_n),$ (i) the \emph{bipartite realization problem} ask whether there is a bipartite graph (no loops or multiple edges) such that vectors $(a_1,...,a_n)$ and $(b_1,...,b_n)$ correspond to the lists of degrees in the two partite sets, (ii) the \emph{digraph realization problem} is to find a digraph (no loops or multiple arcs) such that each vertex $v_i$ ha…
Bidirected graphs generalize directed and undirected graphs in that edges are oriented locally at every node. The natural notion of the degree of a node that takes into account (local) orientations is that of net-degree. In this paper, we extend the following four topics from (un)directed graphs to bidirected graphs: - Erdős-Gallai-type results: characterization of net-degree sequences, - Havel-Hakimi-type results: complete sets of degree-preserving operations, - Extremal degree sequences: characterization of uniquely realizable sequences, and - Enumerative aspects: counting formulas for net-d…
The watchman's walk problem in a digraph calls for finding a minimum length closed dominating walk, where direction of arcs is respected. The watchman's walk of a de Bruijn graph of order $k$ is described by a de Bruijn sequence of order $k-1$. This idea is extended to certain subdigraphs of de Bruijn graphs.
In this work, we give a structural lemma on merges of typical sequences, a notion that was introduced in 1991 [Lagergren and Arnborg, Bodlaender and Kloks, both ICALP 1991] to obtain constructive linear time parameterized algorithms for treewidth and pathwidth. The lemma addresses a runtime bottleneck in those algorithms but so far it does not lead to asymptotically faster algorithms. However, we apply the lemma to show that the cutwidth and the modified cutwidth of series parallel digraphs can be computed in $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time.
One of the simplest methods of generating a random graph with a given degree sequence is provided by the Monte Carlo Markov Chain method using switches. The switch Markov chain converges to the uniform distribution, but generally the rate of convergence is not known. After a number of results concerning various degree sequences, rapid mixing was established for so-called $P$-stable degree sequences (including that of directed graphs), which covers every previously known rapidly mixing region of degree sequences. In this paper we give a non-trivial family of degree sequences that are not $P$-st…
In network modeling of complex systems one is often required to sample random realizations of networks that obey a given set of constraints, usually in form of graph measures. A much studied class of problems targets uniform sampling of simple graphs with given degree sequence or also with given degree correlations expressed in the form of a joint degree matrix. One approach is to use Markov chains based on edge switches (swaps) that preserve the constraints, are irreducible (ergodic) and fast mixing. In 1999, Kannan, Tetali and Vempala (KTV) proposed a simple swap Markov chain for sampling gr…
