We show that certain sums of products of Hermite-Biehler entire functions have only real zeros, extending results of Cardon. As applications of this theorem we construct sums of exponential functions having only real zeros, we construct polynomials having zeros only on the unit circle, and we obtain the three-term recurrence relation for an arbitrary family of real orthogonal polynomials. We discuss a similarity of this result with the Lee-Yang circle theorem from statistical mechanics. Also, we state several open problems.
Let $σ>0$. For $1\le p\le \infty$, the Bernstein space $B^p_σ$ is a Banach space of all $f\in L^p(R)$ such that $f$ is bandlimited to $σ$; that is, the distributional Fourier transform of $f$ is supported in $[-σ, σ]$. We study the approximation of\ $f\in B^p_σ by finite trigonometric sums \[ P_τ(x)=χ_τ(x) \sum_{|k|\le στ/π}c_{k,τ} e^{i\fracπτk x } \] in $L^p$ norm on $R$ as\ $τ\to\infty$,\ where\ $χ_τ$ denotes the indicator function of $[-τ, τ]$.
In this study, we show that all non-trivial solutions of $f"+A(z)f'+B(z)f=0$ have infinite order, provided that the entire coefficient $A(z)$ has certain restrictions and $B(z)$ has multiply-connected Fatou component. We also extend these results to higher order linear differential equations.
We discuss analogues of Newman and Rivlin's formula concerning the ratio of a partial sum of a power series to its limit function and present a new general result of this type for entire functions with a certain asymptotic character. The main tool used in the proof is a Riemann-Hilbert formulation for the partial sums introduced by Kriecherbauer et al. This new result makes some progress on verifying a part of the Saff-Varga Width Conjecture concerning the zero-free regions of these partial sums.
In this thesis we show that the partial sums of the Maclaurin series for a certain class of entire functions possess scaling limits in various directions in the complex plane. In doing so we obtain information about the zeros of the partial sums. We will only assume that these entire functions have a certain asymptotic behavior at infinity. With this information we will partially verify for this class of functions a conjecture on the location of the zeros of their partial sums known as the Saff-Varga Width Conjecture. The thesis begins by introducing the basics (and the not-so-basics) of the t…
In the space of all entire functions it is solved the problem of interpolation taking into account multiplicities by sums of the series of exponentials with the exponents from a given set. It is found a criterion of solubility of the problem in the case when all infinite portions of interpolation nodes are situated on a finite system of rays. It is also disclosed that the problem is equivalent to particular problems of simple interpolation, as well as of point-wise crude approximation, by sums of the series of exponentials.
Analogous to the use of sums of squares of certain real-valued special functions to prove the reality of the zeros of the Bessel functions J_α(z) when α\ge -1, confluent hypergeometric functions {}_0F_1(c; z) when c > 0 or 0 > c > -1, Laguerre polynomials L_n^α(z) when α\ge -2, Jacobi polynomials P_n^{(α,β)}(z) when α\ge -1 and β\ge -1, and some other entire special functions considered in G. If $f$ is an entire function and $a$ is a complex number, $a$ is said to be an asymptotic value of $f$ if there exists a path $γ$ from $0$ to infinity such that $f(z) - a$ tends to $0$ as $z$ tends to infinity along $γ$. The Denjoy--Carleman--Ahlfors Theorem asserts that if $f$ has $n$ distinct asymptotic values, then the rate of growth of $f$ is at least order $n/2$, mean type. A long-standing problem asks whether this conclusion holds for entire functions having $n$ distinct asymptotic (entire) functions, each of growth at most order $1/2$, minimal type. In this paper conditions on the funct…
The study is made of the problem of multiple interpolation on an infinite nodes set by the sums of absolutely convergent series of exponentials whose exponents are from a given set. For entire function conditions on nodes and exponents are obtained that give solubility of the problem. A new approach is demonstrated that enable us, for the case of holomorphic function in a domain, to obtain criteria of solubility of the problem for some class of exponents set and for a special class of nodes set. Upon that the necessity of the conditions is proved in great generality namely for arbitrary nodes …
We prove that if $f(x) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k x^k,$ $a_k >0, $ is an entire function such that the sequence $Q := \left( \frac{a_k^2}{a_{k-1}a_{k+1}} \right)_{k=1}^\infty$ is non-decreasing and $\frac{a_1^2}{a_{0}a_{2}} \geq 2\sqrt[3]{2},$ then all but a finite number of zeros of $f$ are real and simple. We also present a criterion in terms of the closest to zero roots for such a function to have only real zeros (in other words, for belonging to the Laguerre--Pólya class of type I) under additional assumption on the sequence $Q.$
We extend to several variables an earlier result of ours, according to which an entire function of one variable of sufficiently small exponential type, having all derivatives of even order taking integer values at two points, is a polynomial. The proof in the one dimensional case relies on Lidstone expansion of the function. For $n$ variables, we need $n+1$ points, having the property that the differences of $n$ of them with the remaining one give a basis of ${\mathbb C}^n$. The proof is by reduction to the one variable situation.
Normalized exponential sums are entire functions of the form $$ f(z)=1+H_1e^{w_1z}+\cdots+H_ne^{w_nz}, $$ where $H_1,\ldots, H_n\in\C$ and $0<w_1<\ldots<w_n$. It is known that the zeros of such functions are in finitely many vertical strips $S$. The asymptotic number of the zeros in the union of all these strips was found by R. E. Langer already in 1931. In 1973, C. J. Moreno proved that there are zeros arbitrarily close to any vertical line in any strip $S$, provided that $1,w_1,\ldots,w_n$ are linearly independent over the rational numbers. In this study the asymptotic number of zeros in eac…
For many transcendental entire functions, the escaping set has the structure of a Cantor bouquet, consisting of uncountably many disjoint curves. Rippon and Stallard showed that there are many functions for which the escaping set has a new connected structure known as an infinite spider's web. We investigate a connection between these two topological structures for a certain class of sums of exponentials.
Approximation theory of entire functions has been used to demonstrate the construction of a map on $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{R}$ having wandering domains. We also present suitable modification to this construction that helps in obtaining maps with similar characteristics such as infinitely many attracting Fatou components, infinitely many wandering domains having common paths, etc.
In 1979 I. Ciorănescu and L. Zsidó have proved a minimum modulus theorem for entire functions dominated by the restriction to the positive half axis of a canonical product of genus zero, having all roots on the positive imaginary axis and satisfying a certain condition. Here we prove that the above result is optimal: if a canonical product ω of genus zero, having all roots on the positive imaginary axis, does not satisfy the condition in the 1979 paper, then always there exists an entire function dominated by the restriction to the positive half axis of ω, which does not satisfy the desired mi…
In this paper, we review the study of the distribution of the zeros of certain approximations for the Ramanujan $Ξ-$function given by Haseo Ki, and we provide a new proof of his results. Our approach is motivated by the ideas of Velásquez in the study of the zeros of certain sums of entire functions with some condition of stability related to the Hermite-Biehler theorem.
