In this paper, we use Clifford algebra and the spinor calculus to study the complex structures on Euclidean space $R^8$ and the spheres $S^4,S^6$. By the spin representation of $G(2,8)\subset Spin(8)$ we show that the Grassmann manifold G(2,8) can be looked as the set of orthogonal complex structures on $R^8$. In this way, we show that G(2,8) and $CP^{3}$ can be looked as twistor spaces of $S^6$ and $S^4$ respectively. Then we show that there is no almost complex structure on sphere $S^4$ and there is no orthogonal complex structure on the sphere $S^6$.
This paper shows that the Grassmann Manifolds $G_{\bf F}(n,N)$ can all be imbedded in an Euclidean space $M_{\bf F}(N)$ naturally and the imbedding can be realized by the eigenfunctions of Laplacian $\triangle$ on $G_{\bf F}(n,N)$. They are all minimal submanifolds in some spheres of $M_{\bf F}(N)$ respectively. Using these imbeddings, we construct some degenerate Morse functions on Grassmann Manifolds, show that the homology of the complex and quaternion Grassmann Manifolds can be computed easily.
We prove an extension of a theorem of A.Ros on a characterization of seven compact Kaehler submanifolds by holomorphic pinching to certain submanifolds of the complex Grassmannian manifolds.
This paper gives an example of special Lagrangian manifold obtained from a hypersurface of a complex Grassmannian with vanishing first Chern class. The obtained manifold is a 1-torus bundle over the two dimensional real projective space. Such manifolds are interesting for mirror symmetry theory. Other examples of the same type are provided at the end of this article.
On the Grassmann manifold G (m, n) of m-dimensional subspaces of an n-dimensional projective space P^n, a certain supplementary construction called the normalization is considered. By means of this normalization, one can construct the structure of a Riemannian or semi-Riemannian manifold or an affine connection on G(m, n).
Let $V$ be a separable Hilbert space, possibly infinite dimensional. Let $\St(p,V)$ be the Stiefel manifold of orthonormal frames of $p$ vectors in $V$, and let $\Gr(p,V)$ be the Grassmann manifold of $p$ dimensional subspaces of $V$. We study the distance and the geodesics in these manifolds, by reducing the matter to the finite dimensional case. We then prove that any two points in those manifolds can be connected by a minimal geodesic, and characterize the cut locus.
A harmonic map from a Riemannian manifold into a Grassmannian manifold is characterized by a vector bundle, a space of sections of this bundle and a Laplace operator. We apply our main theorem, itself a generalization of a Theorem of Takahashi, to generalize the theory of do Carmo and Wallach and to describe the moduli space of harmonic maps satisfying the gauge and the Einstein-Hermitian conditions from a compact Rieannian manifold into a Grassmannian. As an application, several rigidity results are exihibited. In particular we generalize a rigidity theorem due to Calabi in the case of holomo…
We present several principal bundles of embeddings of compact manifolds (with or without boundary) whose base manifolds are nonlinear Grassmannians. We study their infinite dimensional differential manifold structure in the Fréchet category. This study is motivated by the occurrence of such objects in the geometric Lagrangian formulation of free boundary continuum mechanics and in the study of the associated infinite dimensional dual pairs structures.
The aim of this paper is a characterization of great antipodal sets of complex Grassmannian manifolds as certain designs with the smallest cardinalities.
Different topics on the differential geometry of the complex Grassmann manifold are surveyed in relation to the coherent states. A calculation of the tangent conjugate locus and conjugate locus in the complex Grassmann manifold is presented. The proofs use the Jordan's stationary angles. Also various formulas for the distance on the complex Grassmann manifold are furnished.
This work considers the stability of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) basis interpolation on Grassmann manifolds for parametric Model Order Reduction (pMOR) in hyperelasticity. The article contribution is mainly about stability conditions, all defined from strong mathematical background. We show how the stability of interpolation can be lost if certain geometrical requirements are not satisfied by making a concrete elucidation of the local character of linearization. To this effect, we draw special attention to the Grassmannian Exponential map and optimal injectivity condition of this map…
The Riemannian symmetric space SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) is both Hermitian symmetric and quaternionic Kahler symmetric. Let M be a hypersurface in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) and denote by TM its tangent bundle. The complex structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal complex subbundle C of TM, and the quaternionic structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal quaternionic subbundle Q of TM. In this article we investigate hypersurfaces in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) for which C and Q are closely related to the shape of M.
The Lagrangian formalism on a arbitrary non-fibrating manifold is considered. The kinematical description of this generic situation is based on the concept of (higher-order) Grassmann manifolds which is the factorization of the regular velocity manifold to the action of the differential group. Here we introduce in this context the basic concepts of the Lagrangian formalism as Lagrange, Euler-Lagrange and Helmholtz-Sonin forms. These objects come in pairs, namely we have homogeneous objects (defined on the regular velocity manifold) and non-homogeneous objects (defined on the Grassmann manifold…
In his book Mickelsson notices that the infinite-dimensional Grassmannian manifold of Segal and Wilson admits a Spin^c structure and after this he naturally considers the problem of defining a Dirac operator on it. Mickelsson gives a possible candidate for such an operator but unfortunately it proves out to be badly diverging and he leaves it as an open problem to introduce proper modifications to his original construction in order to obtain a well-defined (unbounded) operator with expected properties. Using fermionic Fock space representations of the restricted unitary group associated to a p…
We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slater type variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove that they are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.
The decomposition of the spinor bundle of the spin Grassmann manifolds $G_{m,n}=SO(m+n)/SO(m)\times SO(n)$ into irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{so}(m)\oplus\mathfrak{so}(n)$ is presented. A universal construction is developed and the general statement is proven for $G_{2k+1,3}$, $G_{2k,4}$, and $G_{2k+1,5}$ for all $k$. The decomposition is used to discuss properties of the spectrum and the eigenspaces of the Dirac operator.
Let M be a manifold with Grassmann structure, i.e. with an isomorphism of the cotangent bundle T^*M\cong E\otimes H with the tensor product of two vector bundles E and H. We define the notion of a half-flat connection \nabla^W in a vector bundle W\to M as a connection whose curvature F\in S^2E\otimes\wedge^2 H\otimes W \subset\wedge^2 T^*M\otimes W. Under appropriate assumptions, for example, when the Grassmann structure is associated with a quaternionic Kaehler structure on M, half-flatness implies the Yang-Mills equations. Inspired by the harmonic space approach, we develop a local construct…
We introduce certain canonical blow-ups $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$, as well as their distinct submanifolds $\mathcal M_{s,p,n}$, of Grassmann manifolds $G(p,n)$ by partitioning the Plücker coordinates with respect to a parameter $s$. Various geometric aspects of $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$ and $\mathcal M_{s,p,n}$ are studied, for instance, the smoothness, the holomorphic symmetries, the (semi-)positivity of the anti-canonical bundles, the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, the functoriality, etc. In particular, we introduce the notion of homeward compactification, of which $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$ are exam…
The real symplectic Stiefel manifold is the manifold of symplectic bases of symplectic subspaces of a fixed dimension. It features in a large variety of applications in physics and engineering. In this work, we study this manifold with the goal of providing theory and matrix-based numerical tools fit for basic data processing. Geodesics are fundamental for data processing. However, these are so far unknown. Pursuing a Lie group approach, we close this gap and derive efficiently computable formulas for the geodesics both with respect to a natural pseudo-Riemannian metric and a novel Riemannian …
We consider data from the Grassmann manifold $G(m,r)$ of all vector subspaces of dimension $r$ of $\mathbb{R}^m$, and focus on the Grassmannian statistical model which is of common use in signal processing and statistics. Canonical Grassmannian distributions $\mathbb{G}_Σ$ on $G(m,r)$ are indexed by parameters $Σ$ from the manifold $\mathcal{M}= Pos_{sym}^{1}(m)$ of positive definite symmetric matrices of determinant $1$. Robust M-estimates of scatter (GE) for general probability measures $\mathcal{P}$ on $G(m,r)$ are studied. Such estimators are defined to be the maximizers of the Grassmannia…
