We consider the Helmholtz equation with a variable index of refraction $n(x)$, which is not necessarily constant at infinity but can have an angular dependency like $n(x)\to n\_\infty(x/|x |)$ as $|x |\to \infty$. Under some appropriate assumptions on this convergence and on $n\_\infty$ we prove that the Sommerfeld condition at infinity still holds true under the explicit form $$ \int\_{\R^d} | \nabla u -i n\_\infty^{1/2} u \xox |^2 \f{dx}{|x |}<+\infty. $$ It is a very striking and unexpected feature that the index $n\_{\infty}$ appears in this formula and not the gradient of the phase as established by Saito in \cite {S} and broadly used numerically. This apparent contradiction is clarified by the existence of some extra estimates on the energy decay. In particular we prove that $$ \int\_{\R^d} | \nabla\_ωn\_\infty(\xox)|^2 \f{| u |^2}{|x |} dx < +\infty. $$ In fact our main contribution is to show that this can be interpreted as a concentration of the energy along the critical lines of $n\_\infty$. In other words, the Sommerfeld condition hides the main physical effect arising for a variable $n$ at infinity; energy concentration on lines rather than dispersion in all directions.
We study the electromagnetic Helmholtz equation \notag (\nabla + ib(x))^{2}u(x) + n(x)u(x) = f(x), \quad x\in\Rd with the magnetic vector potential $b(x)$ and $n(x)$ a variable index of refraction that does not necessarily converge to a constant at infinity, but can have an angular dependency like $n(x) \to n_{\infty}(\frac{x}{|x|})$ as $|x|\to\infty$. We prove an explicit Sommerfeld radiation condition \notag \int_{\Rd} |\D u - in_{\infty}^{1/2}\frac{x}{|x|}u|^{2} \frac{dx}{1+|x)} < + \infty for solutions obtained from the limiting absorption principle and we also give a new energy estimate \…
We study the following Helmholtz equation $$ (\nabla +iA(x))^{2} u+ V_{1}(x) u + V_{2}(x) u + λu = f(x) $$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with magnetic and electric potentials that are singular at the origin and decay at infinity. We prove the existence of a unique solution satisfying a suitable Sommerfeld radiation condition, together with some a priori estimates. We use the limiting absorption method and a multiplier technique of Morawetz type.
We study the 2-D Helmholtz equation in perturbed stratified media, allowing the existence of guided waves. Our assumptions on the perturbing and source terms are not too restrictive. We prove two results. Firstly, we introduce a Sommerfeld-Rellich radiation condition and prove the uniqueness of the solution for the studied equation. Then, by careful asymptotic estimates, we prove the existence of a bounded solution satisfying our radiation condition.
We prove a limiting absorption principle for a generalized Helmholtz equation on an exterior domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions \begin{equation*} (L+λ)v=f, \qquad λ\in \mathbb{R} \end{equation*} under a Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. The operator $L$ is a second order elliptic operator with variable coefficients, the principal part is a small, long range perturbation of $-Δ$, while lower order terms can be singular and large. The main tool is a sharp uniform resolvent estimate, which has independent applications to the problem of embedded eigenvalues and to smoothing estima…
We study a stationary scattering problem related to the nonlinear Helmholtz equation $-Δu - k^2 u = f(x,u) \ \ \text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$,}$ where $N \ge 3$ and $k>0$. For a given incident free wave $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$, we prove the existence of complex-valued solutions of the form $u=φ+u_{\text{sc}}$, where $u_{\text{sc}}$ satisfies the Sommerfeld outgoing radiation condition. Since neither a variational framework nor maximum principles are available for this problem, we use topological fixed point theory and global bifurcation theory to solve an associated integral equation involving …
We consider the high frequency Helmholtz equation with a variable refraction index $n^2(x)$ ($x \in \R^d$), supplemented with a given high frequency source term supported near the origin $x=0$. A small absorption parameter $α_{\varepsilon}>0$ is added, which somehow prescribes a radiation condition at infinity for the considered Helmholtz equation. The semi-classical parameter is $\varepsilon>0$. We let $\eps$ and $\a_\eps$ go to zero {\em simultaneaously}. We study the question whether the indirectly prescribed radiation condition at infinity is satisfied {\em uniformly} along the asymptotic …
Existence results for radially symmetric oscillating solutions for a class of nonlinear autonomous Helmholtz equations are given and their exact asymptotic behavior at infinity is established. Some generalizations to nonautonomous radial equations as well as existence results for nonradial solutions are found. Our theorems prove the existence of standing waves solutions of nonlinear Klein-Gordon or Schrödinger equations with large frequencies.
Our purpose of this paper is to study isolated singular solutions of semilinear Helmholtz equation $$ -Δu-u=Q|u|^{p-1}u \quad{\rm in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^N\setminus\{0\},\ \qquad\lim_{|x|\to0}u(x)=+\infty, $$ where $N\geq 2$, $p>1$ and the potential $Q: \mathbb{R}^N\to (0,+\infty)$ is a Hölder continuous function satisfying extra decaying conditions at infinity. We give the classification of the isolated singularity in the Serrin's subcritical case and then isolated singular solutions is derived with the form $u_k=kΦ+v_k$ via the Schauder fixed point theorem for the integral equation $$v_k=Φ\ast\big…
A simple radiation condition at infinity for time-harmonic massive Dirac spinors is proposed. This condition allows an analogue of the Cauchy integral formula in unbounded domains for null-solutions of the Dirac equation to be proved. The result is obtained with the aid of methods of quaternionic analysis.
In the presented work, we solve the Dirichlet boundary problem for the Helmholtz equation in an exterior angle with periodic boundary data. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution in an appropriate funcional class and we give an explicit formula for it in the form of the Sommerfeld integral. The method of complex characteristics [17] is used.
In space dimension $n\geq3$, we consider the electromagnetic Schrödinger Hamiltonian $H=(\nabla-iA(x))^2+V$ and the corresponding Helmholtz equation (\nabla-iA(x))^2u+u+V(x)u=f\quad \text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^n, where the magnetic and electric potentials are allowed to have singularities at the origin and decay at infinity. We extend the well known $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for the solution of the free Helmholtz equation to the case when the electromagnetic hamiltonian $H$ is considered. This work extends the results that appear in \cite{G}.
We derive the high frequency limit of the Helmholtz equation with source term when the source is the sum of two point sources. We study it in terms of Wigner measures (quadratic observables). We prove that the Wigner measure associated with the solution satisfies a Liouville equation with, as source term, the sum of the source terms that would be created by each of the two point sources taken separately. The first step, and main difficulty, in our study is the obtention of uniform estimates on the solution. Then, from these bounds, we derive the source term in the Liouville equation together w…
This paper presents local and global bifurcation results for radially symmetric solutions of the cubic Helmholtz system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu - μu = \left( u^2 + b \: v^2 \right) u &\text{ on } \mathbb{R}^3, \\ -Δv - νv = \left( v^2 + b \: u^2 \right) v &\text{ on } \mathbb{R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} It is shown that every point along any given branch of radial semitrivial solutions $(u_0, 0, b)$ or diagonal solutions $(u_b, u_b, b)$ (for $μ= ν$) is a bifurcation point. Our analysis is based on a detailed investigation of the oscillatory behavior of solutions at infinity t…
It is well known that when the geometry and/or coefficients allow stable trapped rays, the outgoing solution operator of the Helmholtz equation (a.k.a. the resolvent of the Laplacian) grows exponentially through a sequence of real frequencies tending to infinity. In this paper we show that, even in the presence of the strongest-possible trapping, if a set of frequencies of arbitrarily small measure is excluded, the Helmholtz solution operator grows at most polynomially as the frequency tends to infinity. One significant application of this result is in the convergence analysis of several numer…
We consider the high-frequency Helmholtz equation with a given source term, and a small absorption parameter $\a>0$. The high-frequency (or: semi-classical) parameter is $\eps>0$. We let $\eps$ and $\a$ go to zero simultaneously. We assume that the zero energy is non-trapping for the underlying classical flow. We also assume that the classical trajectories starting from the origin satisfy a transversality condition, a generic assumption. Under these assumptions, we prove that the solution $u^\eps$ radiates in the outgoing direction, {\bf uniformly} in $\eps$. In particular, the function $u^\ep…
The general solution of the modified Helmholtz equation, q_{xx}(x,y)+q_{yy}(x,y)-4b^2q(x,y)=0, in the wedge 0 < x < y < infinity, is presented. This solution is used to find the explicit steady-state of diffusion-limited coalescence, A+A<-->A, on the half-line, with a trap-source at the origin.
A convergence theory for the $hp$-FEM applied to a variety of constant-coefficient Helmholtz problems was pioneered in the papers [Melenk-Sauter, 2010], [Melenk-Sauter, 2011], [Esterhazy-Melenk, 2012], [Melenk-Parsania-Sauter, 2013]. This theory shows that, if the solution operator is bounded polynomially in the wavenumber $k$, then the Galerkin method is quasioptimal provided that $hk/p \leq C_1$ and $p\geq C_2 \log k$, where $C_1$ is sufficiently small, $C_2$ is sufficiently large, and both are independent of $k,h,$ and $p$. The significance of this result is that if $hk/p= C_1$ and $p=C_2\l…
We study a new approach to the problem of transparent boundary conditions for the Helmholtz equation in unbounded domains. Our approach is based on the minimization of an integral functional arising from a volume integral formulation of the radiation condition. The index of refraction does not need to be constant at infinity and may have some angular dependency as well as perturbations. We prove analytical results on the convergence of the approximate solution. Numerical examples for different shapes of the artificial boundary and for non-constant indexes of refraction will be presented.
The Helmholtz decomposition splits a sufficiently smooth vector field into a gradient field and a divergence-free rotation field. Existing decomposition methods impose constraints on the behavior of vector fields at infinity and require solving convolution integrals over the entire coordinate space. To allow a Helmholtz decomposition in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we replace the vector potential in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by the rotation potential, an n-dimensional, antisymmetric matrix-valued map describing $n(n-1)/2$ rotations within the coordinate planes. We provide three methods to derive the Helmholtz decompo…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation with a domain in R^d, d>2 with N cylindrical outlets to infinity with bounded inclusions in R^{d-1}. Cauchy data are prescribed on the boundary of the bounded domains and the aim is to find solution on the unbounded part of the boundary. In 1989, Kozlov and Maz'ya proposed an alternating iterative method for solving Cauchy problems associated with elliptic,self-adjoint and positive-definite operators in bounded domains. Different variants of this method for solving Cauchy problems associated with Helmholtz-type operators exists. We cons…
We consider the question of whether the high-energy eigenfunctions of certain Schrödinger operators on the $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant curvature $-κ^2$ are flexible enough to approximate an arbitrary solution of the Helmholtz equation $Δh+h=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, over the natural length scale $O(λ^{-1/2})$ determined by the eigenvalue $λ\gg 1$. This problem is motivated by the fact that, by the asymptotics of the local Weyl law, approximate Laplace eigenfunctions do have this approximation property on any compact Riemannian manifold. In this paper we are specifically interested…
