Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let W be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over k. Suppose G is a finite group, and B is a block of kG with dihedral defect group D which is Morita equivalent to the principal 2-modular block of a finite simple group. We determine the universal deformation ring R(G,V) for every kG-module V which belongs to B and has stable endomorphism ring k. It follows that R(G,V) is always isomorphic to a subquotient ring of WD. Moreover, we obtain an infinite series of examples of universal deformation rings which are not complete intersections.
Given a dihedral $2$-group $P$ of order at least~8, we classify the splendid Morita equivalence classes of principal $2$-blocks with defect groups isomorphic to $P$. To this end we construct explicit stable equivalences of Morita type induced by specific Scott modules using Brauer indecomposability and gluing methods; we then determine when these stable equivalences are actually Morita equivalences, and hence automatically splendid Morita equivalences. Finally, we compute the generalised decomposition numbers in each case.
Let k be an algebraically closed field, and let Λ be an algebra of dihedral type of polynomial growth as classified by Erdmann and Skowroński. We describe all finitely generated Λ-modules V whose stable endomorphism rings are isomorphic to k and determine their universal deformation rings R(Λ,V). We prove that only three isomorphism types occur for R(Λ,V): k, k[[t]]/(t^2) and k[[t]].
In by now classical work, K. Erdmann classified blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups (and more generally algebras of dihedral type) up to Morita equivalence. In the explicit description by quivers and relations of such algebras with two simple modules, several subtle problems about scalars occurring in relations remained unresolved. In particular, for the dihedral case it is a longstanding open question whether blocks of finite groups can occur for both possible scalars 0 and 1. In this article, using Kuelshammer ideals (a.k.a. generalized Reynolds ideals), we provide the first …
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let $W$ be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over $k$. Suppose $D$ is a dihedral 2-group. We prove that the universal deformation ring $R(D,V)$ of an endo-trivial $kD$-module $V$ is always isomorphic to $W[\mathbb{Z}/2\times\mathbb{Z}/2]$. As a consequence we obtain a similar result for modules $V$ with stable endomorphism ring $k$ belonging to an arbitrary nilpotent block with defect group $D$. This confirms for such $V$ conjectures on the ring structure of the universal deformation ring of $V$ which had previously been shown f…
We provide a complete classification of all algebras of generalised dihedral type, which are natural generalizations of algebras which occurred in the study of blocks with dihedral defect groups. This gives a description by quivers and relations coming from surface triangulations.
We show that several Morita equivalence classes of tame algebras do not occur as blocks of finite groups. This refines classifications by Erdmann of classes of blocks with dihedral, semidihedral, and generalised quaternion defect groups. In particular we now have a complete classification of the Morita equivalence classes of blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups.
We prove that splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules can be lifted to splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with generalised quaternion Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules.
In this paper we investigate gradings on tame blocks of group algebras whose defect group is dihedral. We classify gradings on an arbitrary dihedral block up to graded Morita equivalence. We do this by computing the group of outer automorphisms that fix the isomorphism classes of simple modules. We also show how to grade these blocks via transfer of gradings via dervied equivalences.
We determine the numerical invariants of blocks with defect group D_{2^n}\times C_{2^m}, where D_{2^n} denotes a dihedral group of order 2^n and C_{2^m} denotes a cyclic group of order 2^m. This generalizes Brauer's results for m=0. As a consequence, we prove Brauer's k(B)-conjecture, Olsson's conjecture (and more generally Eaton's conjecture), Brauer's height zero conjecture, the Alperin-McKay conjecture, Alperin's weight conjecture and Robinson's ordinary weight conjecture for these blocks. Moreover, we show that the gluing problem has a unique solution in this case.
The Dunkl--Dirac operator is a deformation of the Dirac operator by means of Dunkl derivatives. We investigate the symmetry algebra generated by the elements supercommuting with the Dunkl--Dirac operator and its dual symbol. This symmetry algebra is realised inside the tensor product of a Clifford algebra and a rational Cherednik algebra associated with a reflection group or root system. For reducible root systems of rank three, we determine all the irreducible finite-dimensional representations and conditions for unitarity. Polynomial solutions of the Dunkl--Dirac equation are given as a real…
We prove that the number of irreducible real characters in a nilpotent block of a finite group is locally determined. We further conjecture that the Frobenius-Schur indicators of those characters can be computed for p=2 in terms of the extended defect group. We derive this from a more general conjecture on the Frobenius-Schur indicator of projective indecomposable characters of 2-blocks with one simple module. This extends results of Murray on 2-blocks with cyclic and dihedral defect groups.
Let p be a prime, M be a finite group, F be the field with p elements, and V be an absolutely irreducible FM-module. Then V has a universal deformation ring R(M,V) whose structure is closely related to the first and second cohomology groups of M with coefficients in Hom_F(V,V). We consider the case when M is an extension of a dihedral group G whose order is relatively prime to p by an elementary abelian p-group N of rank 2. We determine the cohomology groups and also R(M,V) for various V and show to what extent R(M,V) sees the fusion of N in M.
We study deformations of the Howe dual pairs $(\mathrm{U}(n),\mathfrak{u}(1,1))$ and $(\mathrm{U}(n),\mathfrak{u}(2|1))$ to the context of a rational Cherednik algebra $H_{1,c}(G,E)$ associated with a real reflection group $G$ acting on a real vector space $E$ of even dimension. For each pair, we show that the Lie (super)algebra structure of one partner is preserved under the deformation, which leads to a multiplicity-free decomposition of the standard module or its tensor product with a spinor space. For the case where $E$ is two-dimensional and $G$ is a dihedral group, we provide complete de…
Let $k$ be a field and let $Λ$ be a finite dimensional $k$-algebra. We prove that every bounded complex $V^\bullet$ of finitely generated $Λ$-modules has a well-defined versal deformation ring $R(Λ,V^\bullet)$ which is a complete local commutative Noetherian $k$-algebra with residue field $k$. We also prove that nice two-sided tilting complexes between $Λ$ and another finite dimensional $k$-algebra $Γ$ preserve these versal deformation rings. Additionally, we investigate stable equivalences of Morita type between self-injective algebras in this context. We apply these results to the derived eq…
Let $k$ be a field, and let $Λ$ be a finite dimensional $k$-algebra. We prove that if $Λ$ is a self-injective algebra, then every finitely generated $Λ$-module $V$ whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to $k$ has a universal deformation ring $R(Λ,V)$ which is a complete local commutative Noetherian $k$-algebra with residue field $k$. If $Λ$ is also a Frobenius algebra, we show that $R(Λ,V)$ is stable under taking syzygies. We investigate a particular Frobenius algebra $Λ_0$ of dihedral type, as introduced by Erdmann, and we determine $R(Λ_0,V)$ for every finitely generated $Λ_0$-module …
Let B be a real 2-block of a finite group G. Then B has a real defect class. Let g be an element of such a class. A defect couple of B is (D,E), where E is a Sylow 2-subgroup of the extended centralizer C^*(g) of g, and D is the intersection of E with the centralizer C(g). It is known that (D,E) is uniquely determined up to G-conjugacy. We show that (D,E) determines which B-subpairs are real. We also outline how (D,E) influences the vertices of components of the G-permutation module corresponding to the conjugation action of G on its involutions. We apply these methods to enumerate the Frobeni…
A finite-dimensional algebra $A$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ is called periodic if it is periodic under the action of the syzygy operator in the category of $A-A-$ bimodules. The periodic algebras are self-injective and occur naturally in the study of tame blocks of group algebras, actions of finite groups on spheres, hypersurface singularities of finite Cohen-Macaulay type, and Jacobian algebras of quivers with potentials. Recently, the tame periodic algebras of polynomial growth have been classified and it is natural to attempt to classify all tame periodic algebras. We introduce …
