Invariant manifolds facilitate the understanding of nonlinear stochastic dynamics. When an invariant manifold is represented approximately by a graph for example, the whole stochastic dynamical system may be reduced or restricted to this manifold. This reduced system may provide valuable dynamical information for the original system. The authors have derived an invariant manifold reduction or restriction principle for systems of Stratonovich or Ito stochastic differential equations.
Two concepts of invariance are considered for invariant manifolds.
The first invariance concept is in the framework of cocycles -- an invariant manifold being a random set. The dynamical reduction is achieved by investigating random center manifolds.
The second invariance concept is in the sense of almost sure -- an invariant manifold being a deterministic set which is not necessarily attracting. The restriction of the original stochastic system on this deterministic local invariant manifold is still a stochastic system but with reduced dimension.
In this paper, stochastic inertial manifold for damped wave equations subjected to additive white noise is constructed by the Lyapunov-Perron method. It is proved that when the intensity of noise tends to zero the stochastic inertial manifold converges to its deterministic counterpart almost surely.
This article is a sequel to [M.Z.Z.1] aimed at completing the characterization of the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) near stationary solutions. Stationary solution are viewed as random points in the infinite-dimensional state space, and the characterization is expressed in terms of the almost sure long-time behavior of trajectories of the equation in relation to the stationary solution. More specifically, we establish local stable manifold theorems for semilinear see's and spde's …
The Koper model is a vector field in which the differential equations describe the electrochemical oscillations appearing in diffusion processes. This work focuses on the understanding of the slow dynamics of stochastic Koper model perturbed by stable Lévy noise. We establish the slow manifold for stochastic Koper model with stable Lévy noise and verify exponential tracking property. We also present a practical example to demonstrate the analytical results with numerical simulations.
Building on results obtained in [GVRS], we prove Local Stable and Unstable Manifold Theorems for nonlinear, singular stochastic delay differential equations. The main tools are rough paths theory and a semi-invertible Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for cocycles acting on measurable fields of Banach spaces obtained in [GVR].
The main objective of this work is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts I, II. In Part I (this paper), we prove a general existence and compactness theorem for $C^k$-cocycles of semilinear see's and spde's. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see's as well as certain semilinear spde's with …
Random invariant manifolds are geometric objects useful for understanding complex dynamics under stochastic influences. Under a nonuniform hyperbolicity or a nonuniform exponential dichotomy condition, the existence of random pseudo-stable and pseudo-unstable manifolds for a class of \emph{random} partial differential equations and \emph{stochastic} partial differential equations is shown. Unlike the invariant manifold theory for stochastic \emph{ordinary} differential equations, random norms are not used. The result is then applied to a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation with …
By the Lyapunov-Perron method,we prove the existence of random inertial manifolds for a class of equations driven simultaneously by non-autonomous deterministic and stochastic forcing. These invariant manifolds contain tempered pullback random attractors if such attractors exist. We also prove pathwise periodicity and almost periodicity of inertial manifolds when non-autonomous deterministic forcing is periodic and almost periodic in time, respectively.
Stochastic invariant manifolds are crucial in modelling the dynamical behavior of dynamical systems under uncertainty. Under the assumption of exponential trichotomy, existence and smoothness of center manifolds for a class of stochastic evolution equations with linearly multiplicative noise are proved. The exponential attraction and approximation to center manifolds are also discussed.
In this paper, we study a class of time-periodic stochastic Tonelli Lagrangians on compact manifolds. Precisely, we discuss the stochastic Mane Critical Value, prove the existence of stochastic Weak KAM solutions of the related Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Furthermore, we survey the global minimizer.
We consider the relation for the stochastic equilibrium states between the reduced system on a random slow manifold and the original system. This provides a theoretical basis for the reduction about sophisti- cated detailed models by the random slow manifold without significant damage to the overall qualitative properties. Based on this result, we reveal a role of random slow manifolds in detecting stochastic bifurca- tion by an example. The example exhibits a stochastic bifurcation phenomenon and possesses a random slow manifold that carries the stochastic bifurcation information of the syste…
This paper provides a small noise approximation for local random center manifolds of a class of stochastic dynamical systems in Euclidean space. An example is presented to illustrate the method.
A numerical approach for the approximation of inertial manifolds of stochastic evolutionary equations with multiplicative noise is presented and illustrated. After splitting the stochastic evolutionary equations into a backward and a forward part, a numerical scheme is devised for solving this backward-forward stochastic system, and an ensemble of graphs representing the inertial manifold is consequently obtained. This numerical approach is tested in two illustrative examples: one is for a system of stochastic ordinary differential equations and the other is for a stochastic partial differenti…
We establish a slow manifold for a fast-slow stochastic evolutionary system with anomalous diffusion, where both fast and slow components are influ- enced by white noise. Furthermore, we prove the exponential tracking property for the random slow manifold and this leads to a lower dimensional reduced sys- tem based on the slow manifold. Also we consider parameter estimation for this nonlocal fast-slow stochastic dynamical system, where only the slow component is observable. In quantifying parameters in stochastic evolutionary systems, this offers an advantage of dimension reduction.
By applying Rohlin's result on the classification of homomorphisms of Lebesgue space, the random inertial manifold of a stochastic damped nonlinear wave equations with singular perturbation is proved to be approximated almost surely by that of a stochastic nonlinear heat equation which is driven by a new Wiener process depending on the singular perturbation parameter. This approximation can be seen as the Smolukowski--Kramers approximation as time goes to infinity. However, as time goes infinity, the approximation changes with the small parameter, which is different from the approximation on a…
Invariant manifolds are fundamental tools for describing and understanding nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we present a theory of stable and unstable manifolds for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems generated by a class of stochastic partial differential equations. We first show the existence of Lipschitz continuous stable and unstable manifolds by the Lyapunov-Perron's method. Then, we prove the smoothness of these invariant manifolds.
Invariant manifolds play an important role in the study of the qualitative dynamical behaviors for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. However, the geometric shape of these manifolds is largely unclear. The purpose of the present paper is to try to describe the geometric shape of invariant manifolds for a class of stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative white noises. The local geometric shape of invariant manifolds is approximated, which holds with significant likelihood. Furthermore, the result is compared with that for the corresponding deterministic pa…
Invariant manifolds provide the geometric structures for describing and understanding dynamics of nonlinear systems. The theory of invariant manifolds for both finite and infinite dimensional autonomous deterministic systems, and for stochastic ordinary differential equations is relatively mature. In this paper, we present a unified theory of invariant manifolds for infinite dimensional {\em random} dynamical systems generated by {\em stochastic} partial differential equations. We first introduce a random graph transform and a fixed point theorem for non-autonomous systems. Then we show the ex…
This work is concerned with the dynamics of a class of slow-fast stochastic dynamical systems with non-Gaussian stable Lévy noise with a scale parameter. Slow manifolds with exponentially tracking property are constructed, eliminating the fast variables to reduce the dimension of these coupled dynamical systems. It is shown that as the scale parameter tends to zero, the slow manifolds converge to critical manifolds in distribution, which helps understand long time dynamics. The approximation of slow manifolds with error estimate in distribution are also considered.
A bifurcation from the incoherent state to the partially synchronized state of the Kuramoto-Daido model with the coupling function $f(θ) = \sin (θ+α_1) + h\sin 2(θ+α_2)$ is investigated based on the generalized spectral theory and the center manifold reduction. The dynamical system of the order parameter on a center manifold is derived under the assumption that there exists a center manifold on the dual space of a certain test function space. It is shown that the incoherent state loses the stability at a critical coupling strength $K=K_c$, and a stable rotating partially synchronized state app…
Stochastic center manifolds theory are crucial in modelling the dynamical behavior of complex systems under stochastic influences. A multiplicative ergodic theorem on Hilbert space is proved to be satisfied to the exponential trichotomy condition. Then the existence of stochastic center manifolds for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems is shown under the assumption of exponential trichotomy. The theory provides a support for the discretisations of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with space-time white noise.
We link nonlinear manifold learning techniques for data analysis/compression with model reduction techniques for evolution equations with time scale separation. In particular, we demonstrate a `"nonlinear extension" of the POD-Galerkin approach to obtaining reduced dynamic models of dissipative evolution equations. The approach is illustrated through a reaction-diffusion PDE, and the performance of different simulators on the full and the reduced models is compared. We also discuss the relation of this nonlinear extension with the so-called "nonlinear Galerkin" methods developed in the context…
This paper develops a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics on fibered manifolds, together with a reduction theory for symmetries corresponding to Lie groupoid actions. As special cases, this theory includes not only Lagrangian reduction (including reduction by stages) for Lie group actions, but also classical Routh reduction, which we show is naturally posed in this fibered setting. Along the way, we also develop some new results for Lagrangian mechanics on Lie algebroids, most notably a new, coordinate-free formulation of the equations of motion. Finally, we extend the foregoing to…
Random invariant manifolds often provide geometric structures for understanding stochastic dynamics. In this paper, a dynamical approximation estimate is derived for a class of stochastic partial differential equations, by showing that the random invariant manifold is almost surely asymptotically complete. The asymptotic dynamical behavior is thus described by a stochastic ordinary differential system on the random invariant manifold, under suitable conditions. As an application, stationary states (invariant measures) is considered for one example of stochastic partial differential equations.
We present a general theory of stochastic model reduction which is based on a normal form coordinate transform method of A.J. Roberts. This nonlinear, stochastic projection allows for the deterministic and stochastic dynamics to interact correctly on the lower-dimensional manifold so that the dynamics predicted by the reduced, stochastic system agrees well with the dynamics predicted by the original, high-dimensional stochastic system. The method may be applied to any system with well-separated time scales. In this article, we consider a physical problem that involves a singularly perturbed Du…
We derive a reduction formula for singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations (in the sense of Tikhonov and Fenichel) with a known parameterization of the critical manifold. No a priori assumptions concerning separation of slow and fast variables are made, or necessary. We apply the theoretical results to chemical reaction networks with mass action kinetics admitting slow and fast reactions. For some relevant classes of such systems there exist canonical parameterizations of the variety of stationary points, hence the theory is applicable in a natural manner. In particular we obtain a …
Stochastic dynamical systems with continuous symmetries arise commonly in nature and often give rise to coherent spatio-temporal patterns. However, because of their random locations, these patterns are not well captured by current order reduction techniques and a large number of modes is typically necessary for an accurate solution. In this work, we introduce a new methodology for efficient order reduction of such systems by combining (i) the method of slices, a symmetry reduction tool, with (ii) any standard order reduction technique, resulting in efficient mixed symmetry-dimensionality reduc…
