We investigate harmonic forms of geometrically formal metrics, which are defined as those having the exterior product of any two harmonic forms still harmonic. We prove that a formal Sasakian metric can exist only on a real cohomology sphere and that holomorphic forms of a formal Kähler metric are parallel w.r.t. the Levi-Civita connection. In the general Riemannian case a formal metric with maximal second Betti number is shown to be flat. Finally we prove that a six-dimensional manifold with $b_1 \neq 1, b_2 \geqslant 2$ and not having the cohomology algebra of $\mathbb{T}^3 \times S^3$ carries a symplectic structure as soon as it admits a formal metric.
We give results on the following questions about a topologically tame hyperbolic 3-manifold M : 1. Does M have nonzero square-integrable harmonic 1-forms? 2. Does zero lie in the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on (1-forms on M)/Ker(d)?
We study some relation between some geometrically defined classes of diffeomorphisms between manifolds and the $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of these manifolds. Some applications to vanishing and non vanishing results in $L_{q,p}$-cohomology are given.
We give explicit harmonic representatives of Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds and show that they are geometrically Dolbeault formal. We also give explicit harmonic representatives of Bott-Chern cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds of type $(s,1)$ and study the Angella-Tomassini inequality.
A Riemannian manifold is called geometrically formal if the wedge product of harmonic forms is again harmonic, which implies in the compact case that the manifold is topologically formal in the sense of rational homotopy theory. A manifold admitting a Riemannian metric of positive sectional curvature is conjectured to be topologically formal. Nonetheless, we show that among the homogeneous Riemannian metrics of positive sectional curvature a geometrically formal metric is either symmetric, or a metric on a rational homology sphere.
A Riemannian manifold is called geometrically formal if the wedge product of any two harmonic forms is again harmonic. We classify geometrically formal compact 4-manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature. If the sectional curvature is strictly positive, the manifold must be homeomorphic to S^4 or diffeomorphic to CP^2. This conclusion stills holds true if the sectional curvature is strictly positive and we relax the condition of geometric formality to the requirement that the length of harmonic 2-forms is not too nonconstant. In particular, the Hopf conjecture on S^2 x S^2 holds in this c…
We discuss the question of geometric formality for rationally elliptic manifolds of dimension $6$ and $7$. We prove that a geometrically formal six-dimensional biquotient with $b_{2}=3$ has the real cohomology of a symmetric space. We also show that a rationally hyperbolic six-dimensional manifold with $b_2\leq 2$ and $b_3=0$ can not be geometrically formal. As it follows from their real homotopy classification, the seven-dimensional geometrically formal rationally elliptic manifolds have the real cohomology of symmetric spaces as well.
For a closed Kähler manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a connected compact Lie group by holomorphic isometries, we construct a formal Frobenius manifold structure on the equivariant cohomology by exploiting a natural DGBV algebra structure on the Cartan model.
We study a cohomology theory $H^{\bullet}_φ$, called the $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology, on compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds. We show that $H^k_φ \cong H^k_{\mathrm{dR}}$ for $k \neq 3, 4$, but that $H^k_φ$ is infinite-dimensional for $k = 3,4$. Nevertheless there is a canonical injection $H^k_{\mathrm{dR}} \to H^k_φ$. The $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology also satisfies a Poincaré duality induced by the Hodge star. The establishment of these results requires a delicate analysis of the interplay between the exterior derivative $\mathrm{d}$ and the derivation $\mathcal L_B$, and uses both Hodge…
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting linearly on a vector space $V$. We compute the Lie algebra cohomology of the Lie algebra of $Γ$-invariant formal vector fields on $V$. We use this computation to define characteristic classes for foliations on orbifolds.
We provide families of compact astheno-Kähler nilmanifolds and we study the behaviour of the complex blowup of such manifolds. We prove that the existence of an astheno-Kähler metric satisfying an extra differential condition is not preserved by blowup. We also study the interplay between Strong Kähler with torsion metrics and geometrically Bott-Chern metrics. We show that Fino-Parton-Salamon nilmanifolds are geometrically-Bott-Chern-formal, whereas we obtain negative results on the product of two copies of primary Kodaira surface, Inoue surface of type $\mathcal{S}_M$ and on the product of a …
Motivated by understanding the limiting case of a certain systolic inequality we study compact Riemannian manifolds having all harmonic 1-forms of constant length. We give complete characterizations as far as Kähler and hyperbolic geometries are concerned. In the second part of the paper, we give algebraic and topological obstructions to the existence of a geometrically 2-formal Kähler metric, at the level of the second cohomology group. A strong interaction with almost Kähler geometry is to be noted. In complex dimension 3, we list all the possible values of the second Betti number of a geome…
In this paper, we investigate the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields on R^4. In the case of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on R^2, we computed the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of weight <20 in the paper by Mikami-Nakae-Kodama. The main strategy there was decomposing the Gel'fand-Fucks cochain complex into irreducible factors and picking up the trivial representations and their concrete bases, and ours is essentially the same. By computer calculation, we determine the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of …
We determine an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the cohomology algebra $H^*(\mathbb P^2\setminus C,\mathbb C)$ of the complement to an algebraic curve $C$ in the complex projective plane $\mathbb P^2$, via the study of log-resolution logarithmic forms on $\mathbb P^2$. As a first consequence, we derive that $H^*(\mathbb P^2\setminus C,\mathbb C)$ depends only on the following finite pieces of data: the number of irreducible components of $C$ together with their degrees and genera, the number of local branches of each component at each singular point, and the intersection n…
In "The Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks class and characteristic classes of transversely symplectic foliations", arXiv:0910.3414, (October 2009) by D.Kotschick and S.Morita, the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields without constant vector fields on 2n-plane were characterized by two parameters, one is degree and the other is weight. And they obtained those cohomology groups of the 2-plane while their weight <= 10. In this paper, for those cohomology groups of the 2-plane, we succeeded in determining the dimension of cochain complexes by Sp(2,R)-represe…
This is a survey on the equivariant cohomology of Lie group actions on manifolds, from the point of view of de Rham theory. Emphasis is put on the notion of equivariant formality, as well as on applications to ordinary cohomology and to fixed points.
$Γ$-symmetric spaces are a vast generalization of symmetric spaces. Previous results make it conceivable that their isotropy action is equivariantly formal, and we provide evidence for this in case that $Γ= \mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_k$. This in particular implies that $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_k$-symmetric spaces are formal in the sense of Rational Homotopy Theory.
Lagrangian formalism on graded manifolds is phrased in terms of the Grassmann-graded variational bicomplex, generalizing the familiar variational bicomplex for even Lagrangian systems on fiber bundles.
We show that the Hochschild cohomology of the algebra obtained by formal deformation quantization on a symplectic manifold is isomorphic to the formal series with coefficients in the de Rham cohomology of the manifold. The cohomology class obtained by differentiating the star-product with respect to the deformation parameter is seen to be closely related to the characteristic class of the quantization. A fundamental role in the analysis is played by ``quantum Liouville operators,'' which rescale the deformation parameter in the same way in which Liouville vector fields scale the Poisson struct…
In this note we define a notion of Courant pair as a Courant algebra over the Lie algebra of linear derivations on an associative algebra. We study formal deformations of Courant pairs by constructing a cohomology bicomplex with coefficients in a module from the cochain complexes defining Hochschild cohomology and Leibniz cohomology.
