It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
In this paper we study some generic properties of the geodesic flows on a convex sphere. We prove that, $C^r$ generically ($2\le r\le\infty$), every hyperbolic closed geodesic admits some transversal homoclinic orbits.
The stable and unstable manifolds of an invariant set of a piecewise-smooth map are themselves piecewise-smooth. Consequently, as parameters of a piecewise-smooth map are varied, an invariant set can develop a homoclinic connection when its stable manifold intersects a non-differentiable point of its unstable manifold (or vice-versa). This is a codimension-one bifurcation analogous to a homoclinic tangency of a smooth map, referred to here as a homoclinic corner. This paper presents an unfolding of generic homoclinic corners for saddle fixed points of planar piecewise-smooth continuous maps. I…
In this paper, we construct (a) a pair of two regular Cantor sets in higher dimension which exhibits $C^1$-stable intersection and (b) a hyperbolic basic set which exhibits $C^2$-robust homoclinic tangency of the largest codimension for any higher dimensional manifold, using blenders. The former implies that an analog of Moreira's theorem on Cantor sets in the real line does not hold in higher dimension. The latter solves a question posed by Barrientos and A.Raibekas.
We show that if X is a Venice mask (i.e. nontransitive sectional-Anosov flow with dense periodic orbits) supported on a compact 3-manifold, then the omega-limit set of every non-recurrent point in the unstable manifold of some singularity is a closed orbit. In addition, we prove that the intersection of two different homoclinic classes in the maximal invariant set of a sectional-Anosov flow can be decomposed as the disjoint union of, singular points, a non-singular hyperbolic set, and regular points whose alpha-limit set and omega-limit set is formed by singular points or hyperbolic sets.
We study dynamics and bifurcations of 2-dimensional reversible maps having a symmetric saddle fixed point with an asymmetric pair of nontransversal homoclinic orbits (a symmetric nontransversal homoclinic figure-8). We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding the initial homoclinic tangency and prove the existence of infinitely many sequences (cascades) of bifurcations related to the birth of asymptotically stable, unstable and elliptic periodic orbits.
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
We present a methodology for computer assisted proofs of Shil'nikov homoclinic intersections. It is based on geometric bounds on the invariant manifolds using rate conditions, and on propagating the bounds by an interval arithmetic integrator. Our method ensures uniqueness of the parameter for which the homoclinic takes place. We apply the method for the Lorenz-84 atmospheric circulation model, obtaining a sharp bound for the parameter, and also for where the homoclinic intersection of the stable/unstable manifolds takes place.
Homoclinic classes of generic $C^1$-diffeomorphisms are maximal transitive sets and pairwise disjoint. We here present a model explaining how two different homoclinic classes may intersect, failing to be disjoint. For that we construct a one-parameter family of diffeomorphisms $(g_s)_{s\in [-1,1]}$ with hyperbolic points $P$ and $Q$ having nontrivial homoclinic classes, such that, for $s>0$, the classes of $P$ and $Q$ are disjoint, for $s<0$, they are equal, and, for $s=0$, their intersection is a saddle-node.
A diffeomorphism $f$ has a $C^1$-robust homoclinic tangency if there is a $C^1$-neighbourhood $\cU$ of $f$ such that every diffeomorphism in $g\in \cU$ has a hyperbolic set $\La_g$, depending continuously on $g$, such that the stable and unstable manifolds of $\La_g$ have some non-transverse intersection. For every manifold of dimension greater than or equal to three, we exhibit a local mechanism (blender-horseshoes) generating diffeomorphisms with $C^1$-robust homoclinic tangencies. Using blender-horseshoes, we prove that homoclinic classes of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms containing saddles …
An interesting problem in solid state physics is to compute discrete breather solutions in $\mathcal{N}$ coupled 1--dimensional Hamiltonian particle chains and investigate the richness of their interactions. One way to do this is to compute the homoclinic intersections of invariant manifolds of a saddle point located at the origin of a class of $2\mathcal{N}$--dimensional invertible maps. In this paper we apply the parametrization method to express these manifolds analytically as series expansions and compute their intersections numerically to high precision. We first carry out this procedure …
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
We present a Melnikov type approach for establishing transversal intersections of stable/unstable manifolds of perturbed normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. We do not need to know the explicit formulas for the homoclinic orbits prior to the perturbation. We also do not need to compute any integrals along such homoclinics. All needed bounds are established using rigorous computer assisted numerics. Lastly, and most importantly, the method establishes intersections for an explicit range of parameters, and not only for perturbations that are `small enough', as is the case in the classical Me…
The Nielsen-Thurston theory of surface diffeomorphisms shows that useful dynamical information can be obtained about a surface diffeomorphism from a finite collection of periodic orbits. In this paper, we extend these results to homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits of saddle points. These orbits are most readily computed and studied as intersections of unstable and stable manifolds comprising homoclinic or heteroclinic tangles in the surface. We show how to compute a map of a one-dimensional space similar to a train-track which represents the isotopy-stable dynamics of the surface diffeomorphism …
We describe a method for computing an atlas for the stable or unstable manifold attached to an equilibrium point, and implement the method for the saddle-focus libration points of the planar equilateral restricted four body problem. We employ the method at the maximally symmetric case of equal masses, where we compute atlases for both the stable and unstable manifolds. The resulting atlases are comprised of thousands of individual chart maps, with each chart represented by a two variable Taylor polynomial. Post-processing the atlas data yields approximate intersections of the invariant manifol…
In this paper we study homoclinic tangles formed by transversal intersections of the stable and the unstable manifold of a {\it non-resonant, dissipative} homoclinic saddle point in periodically perturbed second order equations. We prove that the dynamics of these homoclinic tangles are that of {\it infinitely wrapped horseshoe maps}. Using $μ$ as a parameter representing the magnitude of the perturbations, we prove that (a) there exist infinitely many disjoint open intervals of $μ$, accumulating at $μ= 0$, such that the entire homoclinic tangle of the perturbed equation consists of one single…
We present a Melnikov type approach for establishing transversal intersections of stable/unstable manifolds of perturbed normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds (NHIMs). The method is based on a new geometric proof of the normally hyperbolic invariant manifold theorem, which establishes the existence of a NHIM, together with its associated invariant manifolds and bounds on their first and second derivatives. We do not need to know the explicit formulas for the homoclinic orbits prior to the perturbation. We also do not need to compute any integrals along such homoclinics. All needed bounds are…
In this paper we present the scenario of the occurrence of strongly dissipative mixed dynamics in two-dimensional reversible diffeomorphisms, using as an example the system describing a motion of two point vortices under the influence of wave perturbation and shear flow. For mixed dynamics of this type the chaotic attractor intersects with the chaotic repeller, but their intersection forms a "thin" set. The main stage of this scenario is the appearance of homoclinic structures for a symmetric saddle orbit which arise after crisis of a homoclinic attractor and repeller.
We analyse the intersection of positively and negatively sectional-hyperbolic sets for flows on compact manifolds. First we prove that such an intersection is hyperbolic if the intersecting sets are both transitive (this is false without such a hypothesis). Next we prove that, in general, such an intersection consists of a nonsingular hyperbolic set, finitely many singularities and regular orbits joining them. Afterward we exhibit a three-dimensional star flow with two homoclinic classes, one being positively (but not negatively) sectional-hyperbolic and the other negatively (but not positivel…
We consider three-dimensional diffeomorphisms having simultaneously heterodimensional cycles and heterodimensional tangencies associated to saddle-foci. These cycles lead to a completely nondominated bifurcation setting. For every $r\geqslant 2$, we exhibit a class of such diffeomorphisms whose heterodimensional cycles can be $C^r$ stabilised and (simultaneously) approximated by diffeomorphisms with $C^r$ robust homoclinic tangencies. The complexity of our nondominated setting with plenty of homoclinic and heteroclinic intersections is used to overcome the difficulty of performing $C^r$ pertur…
The aim of this work is to prove $C^1$ weak Palis conjecture for nonsingular flows. Weak Palis conjecture claims that a generic vector field either is Morse-Smale or exhibits horseshoes. Central model is come up with by Crovisier to obtain homoclinic intersection for diffeomorphisms. We adapt his method for nonsingular flows.
Given a saddle fixed point of a surface diffeomorphism, its stable and unstable curves $W^S$ and $W^U$ often form a homoclinic tangle. Given such a tangle, we use topological methods to find periodic points of the diffeomorphism, using only a subset of the tangle with finitely many points of intersection, which we call a trellis. We typically obtain exponential growth of periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and a strictly positive lower bound for topological entropy. For a simple example occurring in the Henon family, we show that the topological entropy is at least 0.527.
For a generic conservative diffeomorphism of a 3-manifold M, the Oseledets splitting is a globally dominated splitting. Moreover, either all Lyapunov exponents vanish almost everywhere, or else the system is non-uniformly hyperbolic and ergodic. This is the 3-dimensional version of a well-known result by Mañé-Bochi, stating that a generic conservative surface diffeomorphism is either Anosov or all Lyapunov exponents vanish almost everywhere. This result inspired and answers in the positive for dimension 3 a conjecture by Avila and Bochi. We also prove that all partially hyperbolic sets with po…
In this article we prove that for a diffeomorphism on a compact Riemannian manifold, if there is a nontrival homoclinic class that is not uniformly hyperbolic or the diffeomorphism is a $C^{1+α}$ and there is a hyperbolic ergodic measure whose support is not uniformly hyperbolic, then we find a type of strongly distributional chaos which is stronger than usual distributional chaos and Li-Yorke chaos in the set of irregular orbits that are not uniformly hyperbolic. Meanwhile, we prove that various fractal sets are strongly distributional chaotic, such as irregular sets, level sets, several recu…
