We consider the problem of constructing dense lattices of R^n with a given automorphism group. We exhibit a family of such lattices of density at least cn/2^n, which matches, up to a multiplicative constant, the best known density of a lattice packing. For an infinite sequence of dimensions n, we exhibit a finite set of lattices that come with an automorphism group of size n, and a constant proportion of which achieves the aforementioned lower bound on the largest packing density. The algorithmic complexity for exhibiting a basis of such a lattice is of order exp(nlogn), which improves upon previous theorems that yield an equivalent lattice packing density. The method developed here involves applying Leech and Sloane's construction A to a special class of codes with a given automorphism group, namely the class of double circulant codes.
The automorphism groups of the three known extremal even unimodular lattices of dimension 48 and the one of dimension 72 are computed using the classification of finite simple groups. Restrictions on the possible automorphisms of 48-dimensional extremal lattices are obtained. We classify all extremal lattices of dimension 48 having an automorphism of order $m$ with $φ(m) > 24$. In particular the lattice $P_{48n}$ is the unique extremal 48-dimensional lattice that arises as an ideal lattice over a cyclotomic number field.
The methods to classify extremal unimodular lattices with given automorphisms are extended to the situation of modular lattices. A slightly more general notion than the type from the PhD thesis of Michael Juergens is the det-type. The det-type of an automorphism on $L$ determines the one of all partial dual lattices of $L$. This easy observation allows to exclude quite a few det-types of automorphisms left open in the above mentioned thesis. Passing to suitable p-maximal lattices, extremal l-modular lattices of composite level 14 and 15 of dimension 12 and the ones of level 6 and dimension 16 …
The paper narrows down the possible automorphisms of extremal even unimodular lattices of dimension 72. With extensive computations in {\sc Magma} using the very sophisticated algorithm for computing class groups of algebraic number fields written by Steve Donnelly it is shown that the extremal even unimodular lattice $Γ_{72}$ from \cite{dim72} is the unique extremal even unimodular lattice of dimension 72 that admits a large automorphism, where a $d\times d$ matrix is called large, if its minimal polynomial has an irreducible factor of degree $> d/2$.
We determine the normalizer in $SL_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ of several families of congruence subgroups of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$. In addition, we show how these tools can be used to evaluate the groups of automorphisms and the discriminant kernels of a large family of isotropic lattices of signature (2,1).
We characterize conjugacy classes of isometries of odd prime order in unimodular Z-lattices. This is applied to give a complete classification of odd prime order non-symplectic automorphisms of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds up to deformation and birational conjugacy.
We show that there is a unique extremal even unimodular lattice of dimension 48 which has an automorphism of order 5 of type 5-(8,16)-8. Since the three known extremal lattices do not admit such an automorphism, this provides a new example of an extremal even unimodular lattice in dimension 48.
This article extends Bayer-Fluckiger's theorem on characteristic polynomials of isometries on an even unimodular lattice to the case where the isometries have determinant $-1$. As an application, we show that the logarithm of every Salem number of degree $20$ is realized as the topological entropy of an automorphism of a nonprojective K3 surface.
Based on the concept of dual cones introduced by J.Opgenorth we give an algorithm to compute a generating system of the group of automorphisms of a lattice endowed with a hyperbolic bilinear form.
For any finite set $M\subset {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 1}$ of positive integers, there is up to isomorphism a unique ${\mathbb Z}$-lattice $H_M$ with a cyclic automorphism $h_M:H_M\to H_M$ whose eigenvalues are the unit roots with orders in $M$ and have multiplicity 1. The paper studies the automorphisms of the pair $(H_M,h_M)$ which have eigenvalues in $S^1$. The main result are necessary and sufficient conditions on the set $M$ such that the only such automorphisms are $\pm h_M^k,k\in{\mathbb Z}$. The proof uses resultants and cyclotomic polynomials. It is elementary, but involved. Special cases of …
By an automorphism of a topological group G we mean an isomorphism of G onto itself which is also a homeomorphism. In this article, we study the automorphism group Aut(G) of a dense subgroup G of R^n, n>=1. We show that Aut(G) can be naturally identified with the subgroup I(G)={A in GL(n,R): G A =G} of the group GL(n,R) of all non-degenerated (n x n)-matrices over R, where G A={g A:g in G}. We describe $I(G) for many dense subgroups G of either R or R^2. We consider also an inverse problem of which symmetric subgroups of GL(n,R) can be realized as I(G) for some dense subgroup G of R^n. For exa…
The aim of this paper is to give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral polynomial to be the characteristic polynomial of a semi-simple isometry of some even unimodular lattice of given signature. This result has applications applications to automorphisms of K3 surfaces; in particular, we show that every Salem number of degree 4, 6, 8,1 2, 14 or 16 is the dynamical degree of an automorphism of a non-projective K3 surface.
Nishiyama introduced a lattice theoretic classification of the elliptic fibrations on a $K3$ surface. In a previous paper we used his method to exhibit $52$ elliptic fibrations, up to isomorphisms, of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant $-12$. We prove here that the list is complete with a $53$th fibration, thanks to a remark of Elkies and Schütt. We characterize the fibration both theoretically and with a Weierstrass model.
We characterize the irreducible polynomials that occur as a characteristic polynomial of an automorphism of an even unimodular lattice of given signature, generalizing a theorem of Gross and McMullen. As part of the proof, we give a general criterion in terms of Witt groups for a bilinear form equipped with an action of a group G over a discretely valued field to contain a unimodular G-stable lattice.
For any field k of characteristic at most 5 we exhibit an explicit smooth quartic surface in projective threespace over k with trivial automorphism group over the algebraic closure of k. We also show how this can be extended to higher characteristics. Over the rationals we construct an example on which the set of rational points is Zariski dense.
The exceptional group $G_2$, when constructed over $Q_p$, may at the same time be considered as the group of automorphisms of an octonion algebra over $Q_p$, or alternatively it may be constructed as a Chevalley group from the root diagram of the appropriate Lie algebra, $g_2$. Each construction has its benefits and drawbacks, and the first part of this work focuses on drawing parallels between the two and describing certain group structures in terms of both. In particular, we explicitly identify the Chevalley generators of $G_2$ as automorphisms of octonions. In the second part of this work w…
We find 26 reflections in the automorphism group of the the Lorentzian Leech lattice L over Z[exp(2*pi*i/3)] that form the Coxeter diagram seen in the presentation of the bimonster. We prove that these 26 reflections generate the automorphism group of L. We find evidence that these reflections behave like the simple roots and the vector fixed by the diagram automorphisms behaves like the Weyl vector for the refletion group.
We study finite orbits for non-elementary groups of automorphisms of compact projective surfaces. In particular we prove that if the surface and the group are defined over a number field k and the group contains parabolic elements, then the set of finite orbits is not Zariski dense, except in certain very rigid situations, known as Kummer examples. Related results are also established when k=C. An application is given to the description of "canonical vector heights" associated to such automorphism groups.
In this article we study a second example of the phenomenon studied in "Complex Lorentzian Leech lattice and bimonster".(Arxiv. math.GR/0508228). The results and methods of proof are similar. We find 14 roots in the automorphism group of the the quaternionic Lorentzian Leech lattice L that form the Coxeter diagram D given by the incidence graph of projective plane over finite field of order 2. We prove that the reflections in these 14 roots generate the automorphism group of L. We find evidence that these reflections behave like the simple roots and the vector fixed by the diagram automorphism…
This paper concerns complex algebraic K3 surfaces with an automorphism which acts trivially on the Neron-Severi group. Complementing a result by Vorontsov and Kondo, we determine those K3 surfaces where the order of the automorphism is a 2-power and equals the rank of the transcendental lattice. We also study the arithmetic of these K3 surfaces and comment on mirror symmetry
The extremal 3-modular lattice $[\pm G_2(3)]_{14}$ with automorphism group $C_2 \times G_2(\F_3) $ is the unique dual strongly perfect lattice of dimension 14.
We prove sharp limit theorems on random walks on graphs with values in finite groups. We then apply these results (together with some elementary algebraic geometry, number theory, and representation theory) to finite quotients of lattices in semisimple Lie groups (specifically SL(n,Z) and Sp(2n, Z) to show that a ``random'' element in one of these lattices has irreducible characteristic polynomials (over the integers. The term ``random'' can be defined in at least two ways (in terms of height and also in terms of word length in terms of a generating set) -- we show the result using both defini…
