We determine the local structure of all pseudo-Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ in dimensions $n\ge4$ whose Weyl conformal tensor $W$ is parallel and has rank 1 when treated as an operator acting on exterior 2-forms at each point. If one fixes three discrete parameters: the dimension $n\ge4$, the metric signature $--...++$, and a sign factor $ε=\pm1$ accounting for semidefiniteness of $W$, then the local-isometry types of our metrics $g$ correspond bijectively to equivalence classes of surfaces $\varSigma$ with equiaffine projectively flat torsionfree connections; the latter equivalence relation is provided by unimodular affine local diffeomorphisms. The surface $\varSigma$ arises, locally, as the leaf space of a codimension-two parallel distribution on $M$, naturally associated with $g$. We exhibit examples in which the leaves of the distribution form a fibration with the total space $M$ and base $\varSigma$, for a closed surface $\varSigma$ of any prescribed diffeomorphic type.
Our result also completes a local classification of pseudo-Riemannian metrics with parallel Weyl tensor that are neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric: for those among such metrics which are not Ricci-recurrent, rank $W$ = 1, and so they belong to the class mentioned above; on the other hand, the Ricci-recurrent ones have already been classified by the second author.
We define a partition of the space of projectively flat metrics in three classes according to the sign of the Chern scalar curvature; we prove that the class of negative projectively flat metrics is empty, and that the class of positive projectively flat metrics consists precisely of locally conformally flat-Kähler metrics on Hopf manifolds, explicitly characterized by Vaisman. Finally, we review the properties of zero projectively flat metrics. As applications, we refine a list of possible projectively flat metrics by Li, Yau, and Zheng; moreover we prove that projectively flat astheno-Kähler…
The expression (-1/u) times the Hessian of u transforms as a symmetric (0,2) tensor under projective coordinate transformations, so long as u transforms as a section of a certain line bundle. On a locally projectively flat manifold M, the section u can be regarded as a metric potential analogous to the local potential in Kahler geometry. If M is compact and u is a negative section of the dual of the tautological bundle whose Hessian is positive definite, then M is projectively equivalent to a quotient of a bounded convex domain in R^n. The same is true if M has a boundary on which u=0. This th…
A metric projective structure is a manifold equipped with the unparametrised geodesics of some pseudo-Riemannian metric. We make acomprehensive treatment of such structures in the case that there is a projective Weyl curvature nullity condition. The analysis is simplified by a fundamental and canonical 2-tensor invariant that we discover. It leads to a new canonical tractor connection for these geometries which is defined on a rank $(n+1)$-bundle. We show this connection is linked to the metrisability equations that govern the existence of metrics compatible with the structure. The fundamental…
Consider a smooth manifold $M$ equipped with a bracket generating distribution $D$. Two sub-Riemannian metrics on $(M,D)$ are said to be projectively (resp. affinely) equivalent if they have the same geodesics up to reparameterization (resp. up to affine reparameterization). A sub-Riemannian metric $g$ is called rigid (resp. conformally rigid) with respect to projective/affine equivalence, if any sub-Riemannian metric which is projectively/affinely equivalent to $g$ is constantly proportional to $g$ (resp. conformal to $g$). In the Riemannian case the local classification of projectively and a…
In this note, we investigate conformally flat submanifolds of Euclidean space with positive index of relative nullity. Let $M^n$ be a complete conformally flat manifold and let $f\colon M^n\to \R^m$ be an isometric immersion. We prove the following results: (1) If the index of relative nullity is at least two, then $M^n$ is flat and $f$ is a cylinder over a flat submanifold. (2) If the scalar curvature of $M^n$ is non-negative and the index of relative nullity is positive, then $f$ is a cylinder over a submanifold with constant non-negative sectional curvature. (3) If the scalar curvature of $…
It is shown that locally conformally flat Lorentzian gradient Ricci solitons are locally isometric to a Robertson-Walker warped product, if the gradient of the potential function is non null, and to a plane wave, if the gradient of the potential function is null. The latter gradient Ricci solitons are necessarily steady.
The local structure of half conformally flat gradient Ricci almost solitons is investigated, showing that they are locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of any point where the gradient of the potential function is non-null. In opposition, if the gradient of the potential function is null, then the soliton is a steady traceless $κ$-Einstein soliton and is realized on the cotangent bundle of an affine surface.
Conformally quasi-recurrent (CQR)_n pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are investigated, and several new results are obtained. It is shown that the Ricci tensor and the gradient of the fundamental vector are Weyl compatible tensors (the notion was introduced recently by the authors and applies to significative space-times), (CQR)_n manifolds with concircular fundamental vector are quasi-Einstein. For 4-dimensional (CQR)$_4$ Lorentzian manifolds the fundamental vector is null and unique up to a scaling, it is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor, and its integral curves are geodesics. Such space-times a…
It is shown that the space of null geodesics of a causally simple Lorentzian manifold is Hausdorff if it admits an open conformal embedding into a globally hyperbolic spacetime. This provides an obstruction to conformal embeddings of causally simple spacetimes into globally hyperbolic ones irrespective of curvature conditions. Examples of causally simple spacetimes are given not conformally embeddable into globally hyperbolic ones.
This paper studies the geometry of immersions into statistical manifolds. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for statistical manifold structures to be dual to each other for a non-degenerate equiaffine immersion. Then we obtain conditions for realizing an n-dimensional statistical manifold in an (n+1)-dimensional statistical manifold and its converse. Centro-affine immersion of codimension two into a dually flat statistical manifold is defined. Also we have shown that statistical manifold realized in a dually flat statistical manifold of codimension two is conformally-projectivel…
In the complex-Riemannian framework we show that a conformal manifold containing a compact, simply-connected, null-geodesic is conformally flat. In dimension 3 we use the LeBrun correspondence, that views a conformal 3-manifold as the conformal infinity of a selfdual four-manifolds. We also find a relation between the conformal invariants of the conformal infinity and its ambient.
There is a class of Laplacian like conformally invariant differential operators on differential forms $L^\ell_k$ which may be considered the generalisation to differential forms of the conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian known as the Paneitz and GJMS operators. On conformally Einstein manifolds we give explicit formulae for these as explicit factored polynomials in second order differential operators. In the case the manifold is not Ricci flat we use this to provide a direct sum decomposition of the null space of the $L^\ell_k$ in terms of the null spaces of mutually commuting second…
We study non-degenerate, totally umbilical surfaces of a special class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, namely Walker three-manifolds. We show that such surfaces are either one of a totally geodesic family described by Calvaruso and Van der Veken or the ambient manifold must be locally conformally flat (here the surface can also be totally geodesic). The proof makes use of a key technique deployed by Manzano and Soaum in their recent classification of totally umbilical surfaces in homogeneous Riemannian three-manifolds.
In a 4-manifold, the composition of a Riemannian Einstein metric with an almost paracomplex structure that is isometric and parallel, defines a neutral metric that is conformally flat and scalar flat. In this paper, we study hypersurfaces that are null with respect to this neutral metric and in particular we study their geometric properties with respect to the Einstein metric. Firstly, we show that all totally geodesic null hypersurfaces are scalar flat and their existence implies that the Einstein metric in the ambient manifold must be Ricci-flat. Then, we find a necessary condition for the e…
In the round 6-sphere, null-torsion holomorphic curves are fundamental examples of minimal surfaces. This class of minimal surfaces is quite rich: By a theorem of Bryant, extended by Rowland, every closed Riemann surface may be conformally embedded in the round 6-sphere as a null-torsion holomorphic curve. In this work, we study the second variation of area for compact null-torsion holomorphic curves $Σ$ of genus $g$ and area $4πd$, focusing on the spectrum of the Jacobi operator. We show that if $g \leq 6$, then the multiplicity of the lowest eigenvalue $λ_1 = -2$ is exactly equal to $4d$. Mo…
We describe the local conformal geometry of a Lorentzian spin manifold $(M,g)$ admitting a twistor spinor $ϕ$ with zero. Moreover, we describe the shape of the zero set of $ϕ$. If $ϕ$ has isolated zeros then the metric $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a static monopole. In the other case the zero set consists of null geodesic(s) and $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a Brinkmann metric. Our arguments utilise tractor calculus in an essential way. The Dirac current of $ϕ$, which is a conformal Killing vector field, plays an important role for our discussion as well.
Identifying any conformally round metric on the $2$-sphere with a unique cross section on the standard lightcone in the $3+1$-Minkowski spacetime, we gain a new perspective on $2d$-Ricci flow on topological spheres. It turns out that in this setting, Ricci flow is equivalent to a null mean curvature flow first studied by Roesch--Scheuer along null hypersurfaces. Exploiting this equivalence, we can translate well-known results from $2d$-Ricci flow first proven by Hamilton into a full classification of the singularity models for null mean curvature flow in the Minkowski lightcone. Conversely, we…
Conformally recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of dimension n>4 are investigated. The Weyl tensor is represented as a Kulkarni-Nomizu product. If the square of the Weyl tensor is nonzero, a covariantly constant symmetric tensor is constructed, that is quadratic in the Weyl tensor. Then, by Grycak's theorem, the explicit expression of the traceless part of the Ricci tensor is obtained, up to a scalar function. The Ricci tensor has at most two distinct eigenvalues, and the recurrence vector is an eigenvector. Lorentzian conformally recurrent manifolds are then considered. If the square of the…
For even dimensional conformal manifolds several new conformally invariant objects were found recently: invariant differential complexes related to, but distinct from, the de Rham complex (these are elliptic in the case of Riemannian signature); the cohomology spaces of these; conformally stable form spaces that we may view as spaces of conformal harmonics; operators that generalise Branson's Q-curvature; global pairings between differential form bundles that descend to cohomology pairings. Here we show that these operators, spaces, and the theory underlying them, simplify significantly on con…
In this paper we prove that under certain conditions in a quasi Einstein semi Riemannian warped product the fiber is necessarily a Einstein manifold. We provide all the quasi Einstein manifolds when r Bakry Emery tensor is null, the base is conformal to an n-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space invariant under the action of an n - 1 dimensional translation group and the fiber is Ricci flat. As an application, we have built a family of Ricci flat Einstein warped product whose base is not locally conformally flat.
Tractor Calculus is a powerful tool for analyzing Weyl invariance; although fundamentally linked to the Cartan connection, it may also be arrived at geometrically by viewing a conformal manifold as the space of null rays in a Lorentzian ambient space. For dimension d conformally flat manifolds we show that the (d+2)-dimensional Fefferman--Graham ambient space corresponds to the momentum space of a massless scalar field. Hence on the one hand the null cone parameterizes physical momentum excitations, while on the other hand, null rays correspond to points in the underlying conformal manifold. T…
The null distance for Lorentzian manifolds was recently introduced by Sormani and Vega. Under mild assumptions on the time function of the spacetime, the null distance gives rise to an intrinsic, conformally invariant metric that induces the manifold topology. We show when warped products of low regularity and globally hyperbolic spacetimes endowed with the null distance are (local) integral current spaces. This metric and integral current structure sets the stage for investigating convergence analogous to Riemannian geometry. Our main theorem is a general convergence result for warped product…
This paper considers aspects of 4-manifold topology from the point of view of the null cone of a neutral metric, a point of view we call neutral causal topology. In particular, we construct and investigate neutral 4-manifolds with null boundaries that arise from canonical 3- and 4-dimensional settings. A null hypersurface is foliated by its normal and, in the neutral case, inherits a pair of totally null planes at each point. This paper focuses on these plane bundles in a number of classical settings The first construction is the conformal compactification of flat neutral 4-space into the 4-ba…
A rank-n tensor on a Lorentzian manifold V whose contraction with n arbitrary causal future directed vectors is non-negative is said to have the dominant property. These tensors, up to sign, are called causal tensors, and we determine their general properties in dimension N. We prove that rank-2 tensors which map the null cone on itself are causal. It is known that, to any tensor A on V there is a corresponding ``superenergy'' (s-e) tensor T{A} which always has the dominant property. We prove that, conversely, any symmetric rank-2 tensor with the dominant property can be written in a canonical…
