We examine two questions regarding Fourier frequencies for a class of iterated function systems (IFS). These are iteration limits arising from a fixed finite families of affine and contractive mappings in $\br^d$, and the ``IFS'' refers to such a finite system of transformations, or functions. The iteration limits are pairs $(X, μ)$ where $X$ is a compact subset of $\br^d$, (the support of $μ$) and the measure $μ$ is a probability measure determined uniquely by the initial IFS mappings, and a certain strong invariance axiom. The two questions we study are: (1) existence of an orthogonal Fourier basis in the Hilbert space $L^2(X,μ)$; and (2) the interplay between the geometry of $(X, μ)$ on the one side, and the spectral data entailed by possible Fourier bases.
Let $d$ be a positive integer, and let $μ$ be a finite measure on $\br^d$. In this paper we ask when it is possible to find a subset $Λ$ in $\br^d$ such that the corresponding complex exponential functions $e_λ$ indexed by $Λ$ are orthogonal and total in $L^2(μ)$. If this happens, we say that $(μ, Λ)$ is a spectral pair. This is a Fourier duality, and the $x$-variable for the $L^2(μ)$-functions is one side in the duality, while the points in $Λ$ is the other. Stated this way, the framework is too wide, and we shall restrict attention to measures $μ$ which come with an intrinsic scaling symmetr…
We develop a method for calculating the persistence landscapes of affine fractals using the parameters of the corresponding transformations. Given an iterated function system of affine transformations that satisfies a certain compatibility condition, we prove that there exists an affine transformation acting on the space of persistence landscapes which intertwines the action of the iterated function system. This latter affine transformation is a strict contraction and its unique fixed point is the persistence landscape of the affine fractal. We present several examples of the theory as well as…
This paper gives a review of the recent progress in the study of Fourier bases and Fourier frames on self-affine measures. In particular, we emphasize the new matrix analysis approach for checking the completeness of a mutually orthogonal set. This method helps us settle down a long-standing conjecture that Hadamard triples generates self-affine spectral measures. It also gives us non-trivial examples of fractal measures with Fourier frames. Furthermore, a new avenue is open to investigate whether the Middle Third Cantor measure admits Fourier frames.
We consider finite approximations of a fractal generated by an iterated function system of affine transformations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ as a discrete set of data points. Considering a signal supported on this finite approximation, we propose a Fast (Fractal) Fourier Transform by choosing appropriately a second iterated function system to generate a set of frequencies for a collection of exponential functions supported on this finite approximation. Since both the data points of the fractal approximation and the frequencies of the exponential functions are generated by iterated function systems, the…
In these lecture notes we present connections between the theory of iterated function systems, in particular those attractors that are graphs of multivariate real-valued fractal functions, foldable figures and affine Weyl groups, and wavelet sets.
We study some fundamental properties of the special affine Fourier transform (SAFT) in connection with the Fourier analysis and time-frequency analysis. We introduce the modulation space $\boldsymbol {M}^{r,s}_A$ in connection with SAFT and prove that if a bounded linear operator between new modulation spaces commutes with $A$-translation, then it is a $A$-convolution operator. We also establish Hörmander multiplier theorem and Littlewood-Paley theorem associated with the SAFT.
We construct a wavelet and a generalised Fourier basis with respect to some fractal measures given by one-dimensional iterated function systems. In this paper we will not assume that these systems are given by linear contractions generalising in this way some previous work of Jorgensen and Dutkay to the non-linear setting.
The Fractional Fourier Transform is a ubiquitous signal processing tool in basic and applied sciences. The Fractional Fourier Transform generalizes every property and application of the Fourier Transform. Despite the practical importance of the discrete fractional Fourier transform, its applications in digital communications have been elusive. The convolution property of the discrete Fourier transform plays a vital role in designing multi-carrier modulation systems. Here we report a closed-form affine discrete fractional Fourier transform and we show the circular convolution property for it. T…
Consider the Fourier restriction operator associated to a curve in $R^d$, $d\ge 3$. We prove for various classes of curves the endpoint restricted strong type estimate with respect to affine arclength measure on the curve. An essential ingredient is an interpolation result for multilinear operators with symmetries acting on sequences of vector-valued functions.
We carry on the study of Fourier integral operators of H{ö}rmander's type acting on the spaces $(\mathcal{F}L^p)_{comp}$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$, of compactly supported distributions whose Fourier transform is in $L^p$. We show that the sharp loss of derivatives for such an operator to be bounded on these spaces is related to the rank $r$ of the Hessian of the phase $Φ(x,η)$ with respect to the space variables $x$. Indeed, we show that operators of order $m=-r|1/2-1/p|$ are bounded on $(\mathcal{F}L^p)_{comp}$, if the mapping $x\longmapsto\nabla_xΦ(x,η)$ is constant on the fibers, of codimension …
This paper introduces Fourier duality for a class of affine iterated function systems (IFS) T_i. These systems are determined by a finite family of contractive affine maps in R^d. Our Fourier duality applies to the resulting probability measure mu which is fixed by (T_i). When the IFS is given, the support of the associated mu is a compact set X in R^d, typically a fractal. Our Fourier duality refers to the Hilbert space L^2(X, mu): We show that under a certain unitarity condition involving a pair of affine iterated function systems (T_i) and (S_j) it is possible to recursively construct a Fou…
In this paper, we study the convolution structure in the special affine Fourier domain to combine the advantages of the well known special affine Fourier and wavelet transforms into a novel integral transform coined as special affine wavelet transform and investigate the associated constant Q-property in the joint time-frequency domain. The preliminary analysis encompasses the derivation of the fundamental properties, orthogonality relation, inversion formula and range theorem. Finally, we extend the scope of the present study by introducing the notion of multi-resolution analysis associated w…
For a family of fractal measures, we find an explicit Fourier duality. The measures in the pair have compact support in $\br^d$, and they both have the same matrix scaling. But the two use different translation vectors, one by a subset $B$ in $\br^d$, and the other by a related subset $L$. Among other things, we show that there is then a pair of infinite discrete sets $Γ(L)$ and $Γ(B)$ in $\br^d$ such that the $Γ(L)$-Fourier exponentials are orthogonal in $L^2(μ_B)$, and the $Γ(B)$-Fourier exponentials are orthogonal in $L^2(μ_L)$. These sets of orthogonal "frequencies" are typically lacunary,…
Let $μ_{M,D}$ be the planar self-affine measure generated by an expansive integer matrix $M\in M_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and a non-collinear integer digit set $D=\left\{\begin{pmatrix} 0\\0\end{pmatrix},\begin{pmatrix} α_{1}\\ α_{2} \end{pmatrix}, \begin{pmatrix} β_{1}\\ β_{2} \end{pmatrix}, \begin{pmatrix} -α_{1}-β_{1}\\ -α_{2}-β_{2} \end{pmatrix}\right\}$. In this paper, we show that $μ_{M,D}$ is a spectral measure if and only if there exists a matrix $Q\in M_2(\mathbb{R})$ such that $(\tilde{M},\tilde{D})$ is admissible, where $\tilde{M}=QMQ^{-1}$ and $\tilde{D}=QD$. In particular, when $α_1β_2-α_2β…
The Fourier algebra of the affine group of the real line has a natural identification, as a Banach space, with the space of trace-class operators on $L^2({\mathbb R}^\times, dt/ |t|)$. In this paper we study the "dual convolution product" of trace-class operators that corresponds to pointwise product in the Fourier algebra. Answering a question raised in work of Eymard and Terp, we provide an intrinsic description of this operation which does not rely on the identification with the Fourier algebra, and obtain a similar result for the connected component of this affine group. In both cases we c…
The special affine Fourier transform (SAFT) is a promising tool for analyzing non-stationary signals with more degrees of freedom. However, the SAFT fails in obtaining the local features of non-transient signals due to its global kernel and thereby make SAFT incompetent in situations demanding joint information of time and frequency. To circumvent this limitation, we propose a highly flexible time-frequency transform namely, the special affine wavelet transform (SAWT) and investigate the associated constant $Q$-property in the joint time-frequency domain. The basic properties of the proposed t…
We study Fourier bases on invariant measures generated by affine iterated function systems in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with integer coefficients. We show that, for simple digit sets, these systems satisfy the open set condition and have no overlap. We present natural geometric conditions under which such measures have an orthonormal basis or a frame of exponential functions with frequencies being a subset of ${\mathbb Z}^d$. Moreover, we characterize when such measures have a spectrum in ${\Bbb Z}^d$.
We study the moments of equilibrium measures for iterated function systems (IFSs) and draw connections to operator theory. Our main object of study is the infinite matrix which encodes all the moment data of a Borel measure on R^d or C. To encode the salient features of a given IFS into precise moment data, we establish an interdependence between IFS equilibrium measures, the encoding of the sequence of moments of these measures into operators, and a new correspondence between the IFS moments and this family of operators in Hilbert space. For a given IFS, our aim is to establish a functorial c…
In a rather general setting of Itô-Lévy processes we study a class of transforms (Fourier for example) of the state variable of a process which are holomorphic in some disc around time zero in the complex plane. We show that such transforms are related to a system of analytic vectors for the generator of the process, and we state conditions which allow for holomorphic extension of these transforms into a strip which contains the positive real axis. Based on these extensions we develop a functional series expansion of these transforms in terms of the constituents of the generator. As applicatio…
