We establish the exact threshold for the reconstruction problem for a binary asymmetric channel on the b-ary tree, provided that the asymmetry is sufficiently small. This is the first exact reconstruction threshold obtained in roughly a decade. We discuss the implications of our result for Glauber dynamics, phylogenetic reconstruction, and so-called ``replica symmetry breaking'' in spin glasses and random satisfiability problems.
It is well known that reconstruction problems, as the interdisciplinary subject, have been studied in numerous contexts including statistical physics, information theory and computational biology, to name a few. We consider a $2q$-state symmetric model, with two categories of $q$ states in each category, and 3 transition probabilities: the probability to remain in the same state, the probability to change states but remain in the same category, and the probability to change categories. We construct a nonlinear second order dynamical system based on this model and show that the Kesten-Stigum re…
The problem of learning graphons has attracted considerable attention across several scientific communities, with significant progress over the recent years in sparser regimes. Yet, the current techniques still require diverging degrees in order to succeed with efficient algorithms in the challenging cases where the local structure of the graph is homogeneous. This paper provides an efficient algorithm to learn graphons in the constant expected degree regime. The algorithm is shown to succeed in estimating the rank-$k$ projection of a graphon in the $L_2$ metric if the top $k$ eigenvalues of t…
Community detection is considered for a stochastic block model graph of n vertices, with K vertices in the planted community, edge probability p for pairs of vertices both in the community, and edge probability q for other pairs of vertices. The main focus of the paper is on weak recovery of the community based on the graph G, with o(K) misclassified vertices on average, in the sublinear regime $n^{1-o(1)} \leq K \leq o(n).$ A critical parameter is the effective signal-to-noise ratio $λ=K^2(p-q)^2/((n-K)q)$, with $λ=1$ corresponding to the Kesten-Stigum threshold. We show that a belief propaga…
We consider the sparse stochastic block model in the case where the degrees are uninformative. The case where the two communities have approximately the same size has been extensively studied and we concentrate here on the community detection problem in the case of unbalanced communities. In this setting, spectral algorithms based on the non-backtracking matrix are known to solve the community detection problem (i.e. do strictly better than a random guess) when the signal is sufficiently large namely above the so-called Kesten Stigum threshold. In this regime and when the average degree tends …
Let $(Z_n,n\geq 0)$ be a supercritical Galton-Watson process whose offspring distribution $μ$ has mean $λ>1$ and is such that $\int x(\log(x))_+ dμ(x)<+\infty$. According to the famous Kesten \& Stigum theorem, $(Z_n/λ^n)$ converges almost surely, as $n\to+\infty$. The limiting random variable has mean~1, and its distribution is characterised as the solution of a fixed point equation. \par In this paper, we consider a family of Galton-Watson processes $(Z_n(λ), n\geq 0)$ defined for~$λ$ ranging in an interval $I\subset (1, \infty)$, and where we interpret $λ$ as the time (when $n$ is the gener…
We study supercritical branching processes in which all particles evolve according to some general Markovian motion (which may possess absorbing states) and branch independently at a fixed constant rate. Under fairly natural assumptions on the asymptotic distribution of the underlying motion, we first show using only probablistic tools that there is convergence in $L^2$ of the empirical measure (normalized by the mean number of particles) if and only if an associated additive martingale is bounded in $L^2$. This is a significant improvement over previous results, which were mainly restricted t…
It is known that the Kesten-Stigum reconstruction bound is tight for roughly symmetric binary channels. In this paper, we will adopt a refined analysis of moment recursion on a weighted version of the magnetization, which is engaged in Sly [2011] to handle the symmetric Potts model, and establish the critical condition of the asymmetric Ising model to make Kesten-Stigum bound the reconstruction threshold on regular $d$-ary trees.
The reconstruction problem on the tree has been studied in numerous contexts including statistical physics, information theory and computational biology. However, rigorous reconstruction thresholds have only been established in a small number of models. We prove the first exact reconstruction threshold in a non-binary model establishing the Kesten-Stigum bound for the 3-state Potts model on regular trees of large degree. We further establish that the Kesten-Stigum bound is not tight for the $q$-state Potts model when $q \geq 5$. Moreover, we determine asymptotics for the reconstruction thresho…
Slow Beats Fast at the Kesten-Stigum Threshold: Minimax, Fisher-Information and Belief-Propagation Characterizations of the Information-Computation Gap in Sparse Stochastic Block Models
Consider a Markov chain $(ξ_v)_{v \in V} \in [k]^V$ on the infinite $b$-ary tree $T = (V,E)$ with irreducible edge transition matrix $M$, where $b \geq 2$, $k \geq 2$ and $[k] = \{1,...,k\}$. We denote by $L_n$ the level-$n$ vertices of $T$. Assume $M$ has a real second-largest (in absolute value) eigenvalue $λ$ with corresponding real eigenvector $ν\neq 0$. Letting $σ_v = ν_{ξ_v}$, we consider the following root-state estimator, which was introduced by Mossel and Peres (2003) in the context of the "recontruction problem" on trees: \begin{equation*} S_n = (bλ)^{-n} \sum_{x\in L_n} σ_x. \end{eq…
In this paper, we consider a broadcasting process in which information is propagated from a given root node on a noisy tree network, and answer the question that whether the symbols at the nth level of the tree contain non-vanishing information of the root as n goes to infinity. Although the reconstruction problem on the tree has been studied in numerous contexts including information theory, mathematical genetics and statistical physics, the existing literatures with rigorous reconstruction thresholds established are very limited. In the remarkable work of Borgs, Chayes, Mossel and Roch (The …

We propose an efficient meta-algorithm for Bayesian estimation problems that is based on low-degree polynomials, semidefinite programming, and tensor decomposition. The algorithm is inspired by recent lower bound constructions for sum-of-squares and related to the method of moments. Our focus is on sample complexity bounds that are as tight as possible (up to additive lower-order terms) and often achieve statistical thresholds or conjectured computational thresholds. Our algorithm recovers the best known bounds for community detection in the sparse stochastic block model, a widely-studied clas…
We give a criterion of the form Q(d)c(M)<1 for the non-reconstructability of tree-indexed q-state Markov chains obtained by broadcasting a signal from the root with a given transition matrix M. Here c(M) is an explicit function, which is convex over the set of M's with a given invariant distribution, that is defined in terms of a (q-1)-dimensional variational problem over symmetric entropies. Further Q(d) is the expected number of offspring on the Galton-Watson tree. This result is equivalent to proving the extremality of the free boundary condition-Gibbs measure within the corresponding Gibbs…
Two problems for threshold cascades of interacting diffusions on unimodular random trees: front propagation with a Bramson correction, and the continuous-type limit theory
Many inference problems, notably the stochastic block model (SBM) that generates a random graph with a hidden community structure, undergo phase transitions as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio, and can exhibit hard phases in which optimal inference is information-theoretically possible but computationally challenging. In this paper we refine this description by emphasizing the existence of more generic phase diagrams with a hybrid-hard phase in which it is computationally easy to reach a non-trivial inference accuracy, but computationally hard to match the information theoretically opti…
We give upper and lower bounds on the information-theoretic threshold for community detection in the stochastic block model. Specifically, consider the symmetric stochastic block model with $q$ groups, average degree $d$, and connection probabilities $c_\text{in}/n$ and $c_\text{out}/n$ for within-group and between-group edges respectively; let $λ= (c_\text{in}-c_\text{out})/(qd)$. We show that, when $q$ is large, and $λ= O(1/q)$, the critical value of $d$ at which community detection becomes possible---in physical terms, the condensation threshold---is \[ d_\text{c} = Θ\!\left( \frac{\log q}{…
