We study the global existence and space-time asymptotics of solutions for a class of nonlocal parabolic semilinear equations. Our models include the Nernst-Planck and the Debye-Hukel drift-diffusion systems as well as parabolic-elliptic systems of chemotaxis. In the case of a model of self-gravitating particles, we also give a result on the finite time blow up of solutions with localized and oscillating complex-valued initial data, using a method by S. Montgomery-Smith.
This note is devoted to a simple proof of blowup of solutions for a nonlinear heat equation. The criterion for a blowup is expressed in terms of a Morrey space norm and is in a sense complementary to conditions guaranteeing the global in time existence of solutions. The method goes back to H. Fujita and extends to other nonlinear parabolic equations.
A class of nonlinear viscous transport equations describing aggregation phenomena in biology is considered. Optimal conditions on an interaction potential are obtained which lead either to the existence or to the nonexistence of global-in-time solutions.
We construct an extremizer for the kinetic energy inequality (except the endpoint cases) developing the concentration-compactness technique for operator valued inequality in the formulation of the profile decomposition. Moreover, we investigate the properties of the extremizer, such as the system of Euler-Lagrange equations, regularity and summability. As an application, we study a dynamical consequence of a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with focusing cubic nonlinearities in three dimension when each wave function is restricted to be orthogonal. Using the critical element of the ki…
We consider the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two or three space dimensions for which the heat conduction of Fourier's law is replaced by Cattaneo's law and the classical Newtonian flow is replaced by a revised Maxwell flow. We show that a physical entropy exists for this new model. For two special cases, we show the global well-posedness of solutions with small initial data and the blow-up of solutions in finite time for a class of large initial data. Moreover, for vanishing relaxation parameters, the solutions (if it exists) are shown to converge to solutions of the …
We study linear pseudoparabolic equations with unbounded and time-dependent coefficients. We solve the case which has remained open in several recent studies of pseudoparabolic equations with unbounded and time-dependent coefficients. In this work we get a sharp condition for the existence or non-existence of solutions. Conditions on the initial function and coefficient are provided so that every nontrivial positive solution blows up instantaneously. When the coefficient and the initial function do not grow too rapidly, we establish the existence and uniqueness of global solutions, for both ti…
We consider a partial differential equation that arises in the coarse-grained description of epitaxial growth processes. This is a parabolic equation whose evolution is governed by the competition between the determinant of the Hessian matrix of the solution and the biharmonic operator. This model might present a gradient flow structure depending on the boundary conditions. We first extend previous results on the existence of stationary solutions to this model for Dirichlet boundary conditions. For the evolution problem we prove local existence of solutions for arbitrary data and global existe…
The blow-up of solutions for the Cauchy problem of fractional Ginzburg-Landau equation with non-positive nonlinearity is shown by an ODE argument. Moreover, in one dimensional case, the optimal lifespan estimate for size of initial data is obtained.
We construct a new class of multi-solitary wave solutions for the mass critical two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Given any integer K>1, there exists a global (for positive time) solution of (NLS) that decomposes asymptotically into a sum of solitary waves centered at the vertices of a K-sided regular polygon and concentrating at a logarithmic rate in large time. This solution blows up in infinite time with logarithmic rate. Using the pseudo-conformal transform, this yields the first example of solution blowing up in finite time with a rate strictly above the pseudo-conform…
In this paper, we obtain a blow-up result for solutions to a semi-linear wave equation with scale-invariant dissipation and mass and power non-linearity, in the case in which the model has a "wave like" behavior. In order to achieve this goal, we perform a change of variables that transforms our starting equation in a strictly hyperbolic semi-linear wave equation with time-dependent speed of propagation. Then, we apply Kato's lemma to find a blow-up result for solutions to the transformed equation under some support and sign assumptions on the initial data. A special emphasis is placed on the …
It is well known from the work of [2] that the Fujita phenomenon for reaction-diffusion evolution equations with power nonlinearities does not occur on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^N$, thus marking a striking difference with the Euclidean situation. We show that, on classes of manifolds in which the bottom $Λ$ of the $L^2$ spectrum of $-Δ$ is strictly positive (the hyperbolic space being thus included), a different version of the Fujita phenomenon occurs for other kinds of nonlinearities, in which the role of the critical Fujita exponent in the Euclidean case is taken by $Λ$. Such nonlinea…
We construct a sequence of embedded minimal disks in a ball where the curvatures blow up only at the center. The sequence converges to a limit which is not smooth and not proper.
We study global in time existence versus blow-up in finite time of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation with a variable density $ρ(x)$ and a power-like reaction term posed in the one dimensional interval $(-R,R)$, $R>0$. Here the weight function is singular at the boundary of the domain $(-R,R)$, indeed it is such that $ρ(x)\sim (R-|x|)^{-q}$ as $|x|\to R$, with $q\ge0$. We show a different behavior of solutions depending on the three cases when $q>2$, $q=2$ and $q<2$.
In this article we study global existence and blow-up of solutions for a general class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearities, $u_{tt}-Lu_{xx}=B(- |u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}, ~(p>1)$, where the nonlocality enters through two pseudo-differential operators $L$ and $B$. We establish thresholds for global existence versus blow-up using the potential well method which relies essentially on the ideas suggested by Payne and Sattinger. Our results improve the global existence and blow-up results given in the literature for the present class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations and c…
We consider the evolution of N bosons, where N is large, with two-body interactions of the form $N^{3β}v(N^β\cdot)$, $0\leqβ\leq 1$. The parameter $β$ measures the strength of interactions. We compare the exact evolution with an approximation which considers the evolution of a mean field coupled with an appropriate description of pair excitations, see Commun. Math. Phys. 294: 273-301, 2010 and Adv. Math. 228: 1788-1815, 2011. For $0\leqβ< 1/2$, we derive an error bound of the form $p(t)/N^α$, where $α> 0$ and $p(t)$ is a polynomial, which implies a specific rate of convergence as $N\rightarrow…
Using the concentration-compactness method and the localized virial type arguments, we study the behavior of $H^1$ solutions to the focusing quintic NLS in $\R^2$, namely, $$i \partial_t u+Δu+|u|^4u=0,\quad\quad (x, t) \in \R^2\times\R.$$ Denoting by $M[u]$ and $E[u]$, the mass and energy of a solution $u,$ respectively, and $Q$ the ground state solution to $-Q+ΔQ+ |Q|^4Q=0$, and assuming $M[u]E[u] <M[Q]E[Q]$, we characterize the threshold for global versus finite time existence. Moreover, we show scattering for global existing time solutions and finite or "weak" blow up for the complement reg…
Using a Fourier spectral method, we provide a detailed numerically investigation of dispersive Schrödinger type equations involving a fractional Laplacian. By an appropriate choice of the dispersive exponent, both mass and energy sub- and supercritical regimes can be computed in one spatial dimension, only. This allows us to study the possibility of finite time blow-up versus global existence, the nature of the blow-up, the stability and instability of nonlinear ground states, and the long time dynamics of solutions. The latter is also studied in a semiclassical setting. Moreover, we numerical…
In this paper, we revisit the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant magnetic field. We first establish sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of global in time and finite time blow-up solutions. In particular, we derive sharp thresholds for global existence versus blow-up for the equation with mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. We next prove the existence and orbital stability of normalized standing waves which extend the previous known results to the mass-critical and mass-supercritical cases. To show the existence o…
The homogeneous bosonic Nordheim equation is a kinetic equation describing the dynamics of the distribution of particles in the space of moments for a homogeneous, weakly interacting, quantum gas of bosons. We show the existence of classical solutions of the homogeneous bosonic Nordheim equation that blow up in finite time. We also prove finite time condensation for a class of weak solutions of the kinetic equation.
The nonlinear noisy leaky integrate-and-fire (NNLIF) model is a popular mean-field description of a large number of interacting neurons, which has attracted mathematicians to study from various aspects. A core property of this model is the finite time blow-up of the firing rate, which scientifically corresponds to the synchronization of a neuron network, and mathematically prevents the existence of a global classical solution. In this work, we propose a new generalized solution based on reformulating the PDE model with a specific change of variable in time. A firing rate dependent timescale is…

We investigate gradient flows of some homogeneous functionals in R^N , arising in the Lagrangian approximation of systems of self-interacting and diffusing particles. We focus on the case of negative homogeneity. In the case of strong self-interaction, the functional possesses a cone of negative energy. It is immediate to see that solutions with negative energy at some time become singular in finite time, meaning that a subset of particles concentrate at a single point. Here, we establish that all solutions become singular in finite time for the class of functionals under consideration. The pa…
We study the focusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one spatial dimension with multiplicative noise, driven by a Wiener process white in time and colored in space, in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases. The mass ($L^2$-norm) is conserved due to the multiplicative noise defined via the Stratonovich integral, the energy (Hamiltonian) is not preserved. We first investigate how the energy is affected by various spatially correlated random perturbations. We then study the influence of the noise on the global dynamics measuring the probability of blow-up versus scattering beha…
In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak-Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.
We present a new hydrodynamic model for synchronization phenomena which is a type of pressureless Euler system with nonlocal interaction forces. This system can be formally derived from the Kuramoto model with inertia, which is a classical model of interacting phase oscillators widely used to investigate synchronization phenomena, through a kinetic description under the mono-kinetic closure assumption. For the proposed system, we first establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions. For the case of identical natural frequencies, we provide synchronization estimates und…
