Stratified Morse Theory in Arrangements

A Little Microlocal Morse Theory

If a complex analytic function, $f$, has a stratified isolated critical point, then it is known that the cohomology of the Milnor fibre of $f$ has a direct sum decomposition in terms of the normal Morse data to the strata. We use microlocal Morse theory to obtain the same result under the weakened hypothesis that the vanishing cycles along $f$ have isolated support. We also investigate an index-theoretic proof of this fact.

Arrangements and local systems

We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Orlik-Solomon algebra with the connection operator. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. Combinatorial stratifications and minimality of 2-arrangements

We prove that the complement of any affine 2-arrangement in R^d is minimal, that is, it is homotopy equivalent to a cell complex with as many i-cells as its i-th rational Betti number. For the proof, we provide a Lefschetz-type hyperplane theorem for complements of 2-arrangements, and introduce Alexander duality for combinatorial Morse functions. Stationary points at infinity for analytic combinatorics

On complex algebraic varieties, height functions arising in combinatorial applications fail to be proper. This complicates the description and computation via Morse theory of key topological invariants. Here we establish checkable conditions under which the behavior at infinity may be ignored, and the usual theorems of classical and stratified Morse theory may be applied. This allows for simplified arguments in the field of analytic combinatorics in several variables, and forms the basis for new methods applying to problems beyond the reach of previous techniques.

On the stratification of a compact 3-manifold by the trajectory spaces of a Morse-Smale flow

We consider a Morse function $f$ and a Morse-Smale gradient-like vector field $X$ on a compact connected oriented 3-manifold $M$ such that $f$ has only one critical point of index 3. Based on Laudenbach's ideas, we will show that the flow of $X$ can be isotoped into one so that the trajectory spaces of the new flow provide a stratification for $M$. Gradient-like vector fields on a complex analytic variety

Given a complex analytic function f on a Whitney stratified complex analytic variety of complex dimension n, whose real part Re(f) is Morse, we prove the existence of a stratified gradient-like vector field for Re(f) such that the unstable set of a critical point p on a stratum S of complex dimension s has real dimension $m(p)+n-s$ as was conjectured by Goresky and MacPherson.

The rational cohomology ring of the moduli space of abelian 3-folds

The rational cohomology ring of A_3, the moduli space of abelian 3-folds is computed. This is isomorphic to the the rational cohomology ring of the group Sp_3(Z) of 6x6 integral symplectic matrices. The main ingredients in the computation are (1) Looijenga's computation of the rational cohomology ring of M_3, the moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus 3, and (2) the stratified Morse theory of Goresky and MacPherson, which we use to compute the homology of the jacobian locus (in the rank 3 Siegel upper half plane), or equivalently of the extended Torelli group in genus 3.
