We study the semi-classical trace formula at a critical energy level for a $h$-pseudo-differential operator whose principal symbol has a unique non-degenerate critical point for that energy. This leads to the study of Hamiltonian systems near equilibrium and near the non-zero periods of the linearized flow. The contributions of these periods to the trace formula are expressed in terms of degenerate oscillatory integrals. The new results obtained are formulated in terms of the geometry of the energy surface and the classical dynamics on this surface.
In this paper, we analyze main properties of the volume and layer potentials as well as the Poisson integral for a multi-dimensional degenerate parabolic equation. As consequences, we obtain trace formulae of the heat volume potential and the Poisson integral which solve Kac's problem for degenerate parabolic equations in cylindrical domains.
We prove existence of strong traces at $t=0$ for quasi-solutions to (multidimensional) degenerate parabolic equations with no non-degeneracy conditions. In order to solve the problem, we combine the blow up method and a strong precompactness result for quasi-solutions to degenerate parabolic equations with the induction argument with respect to the space dimension.
We study the semi-classical trace formula at a critical energy level for an $h$-pseudo-differential operator on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ whose principal symbol has a totally degenerate critical point for that energy. This problem is studied for a large time behavior and under the hypothesis that the principal symbol of the operator has a local extremum at the critical point.
In this paper we explore the connection between semi-classical and quantum Birkhoff canonical forms (BCF) for Schrodinger operators. In particular we give a "non-symbolic" operator theoretic derivation of the quantum Birkhoff canonical form and provide an explicit recipe for expressing the quantum BCF in terms of the semi-classical BCF.
We study the initial value problem with unbounded nonnegative functions or measures for the equation $ \prt_tu-\Gd_p u+f(u)=0$ in $\BBR^N\ti(0,\infty)$ where $p>1$, $\Gd_p u = \text{div}(\abs {\nabla u}^{p-2} \nabla u)$ and $f$ is a continuous, nondecreasing nonnegative function such that $f(0)=0$. In the case $p>\frac{2N}{N+1}$, we provide a sufficient condition on $f$ for existence and uniqueness of the solutions satisfying the initial data $k\gd_0$ and we study their limit when $k\to\infty$ according $f^{-1}$ and $F^{-1/p}$ are integrable or not at infinity, where $F(s)=\int_0^s f(\gs)d\gs$…
We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for $L^2$-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution. This is a revised corrected version of the paper published in Arch.\ Ratio…
We prove the existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions for a class of degenerate semilinear wave equations: \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+|u|^{s-1}u=f(x,t), \] for all $s>1$. In particular we prove the existence of infinitely many classical solutions for the case $s=3$ posed by Brézis in \cite{BrezisBAMS}. The proof relies on a new upper a priori estimates for minimax values of, a pertubed from symmetry, strongly indefinite functional, depending on a small parameter.
We prove the existence of a critical Fujita exponent for a non-homogeneous semilinear heat equation which involves degenerate coefficients. More precisely, in order to give a rather complete theory, we focus on two types of weights $w(x)=|x_1|^a$ or $w(x)=|x|^b$ where $a, b>0$ in a suitable range. The coefficients under consideration admit either a singularity at the origin or a line of singularities. In the latter case, the problem is related to the fractional Laplacian.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotics of resonances in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0^+$ for $2\times 2$ matrix Schrödinger operators in one dimension. We study the case where the two underlying classical Hamiltonian trajectories cross tangentially in the phase space. In the setting that one of the classical trajectories is a simple closed curve whereas the other one is non-trapping, we show that the imaginary part of the resonances is of order $h^{(m_0+3)/(m_0+1)}$, where $m_0$ is the maximal contact order of the crossings. This principal order comes from the subprincipal terms of the…
In this paper, we mainly discuss a priori bounds of the following degenerate elliptic equation, {equation}\label{000} a^{ij}(x)\partial_{ij}u+b^i(x)\partial_i u +f(x,u)=0,\text{in}Ω\subset\subset R^n, {equation} where $a^{ij}\partial_i ϕ\partial_j ϕ=0$ on $\partial Ω$, $ϕ$ is the defining function of $\partial Ω$. Imposing suitable conditions on the coefficients and $f(x,u)$, one can get the $L^\infty$-estimates of \eqref{000} via blow up method.
A class of energy-transport equations without electric field under mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions is analyzed. The system of degenerate and strongly coupled parabolic equations for the particle density and temperature arises in semiconductor device theory. The global-in-time existence of weak nonnegative solutions is shown. The proof consists of a variable transformation and a semi-discretization in time such that the discretized system becomes elliptic and semilinear. Positive approximate solutions are obtained by Stampacchia truncation arguments and a new cut-off test function. …
In this paper, we are concerned with semiclassical states to the following Sobolev critical Dirac equation with degenerate potential, \begin{align*} -\textnormal{i} \eps α\cdot \nabla u + a βu + V(x) u=|u|^{q-2} u + |u| u \quad \mbox{in} \,\, \R^3, \end{align*} where $u:\mathbb{R}^3\rightarrow \mathbb{C}^4$, $2<q<3$, $\eps>0$ is a small parameter, $a>0$ is a constant, $α=(α_1, α_2, α_3)$, $α_j$ and $β$ are $4 \times 4$ Pauli-Dirac matrices. We construct an infinite sequence of higher topological type semiclassical states with higher energies concentrating around the local minimum points of the…
We study the semi-classical trace formula at a critical energy level for a Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We assume here that the potential has a totally degenerate critical point associated to a local maximum. The main result, which establishes the contribution of the associated equilibrium in the trace formula, is valid for all time in a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ and includes the singularity in $t=0$. For these new contributions the asymptotic expansion involves the logarithm of the parameter $h$. Depending on an explicit arithmetic condition on the dimension and the order of…
This paper is concerned with traveling wave solutions for a chemotaxis model with degenerate diffusion of porous medium type. We establish the existence of semi-finite traveling waves, including the sharp type and $C^1$ type semi-finite waves. Our results indicate that chemotaxis slows down the wave speed of semi-finite traveling wave, that is, the traveling wave speed for chemotaxis with porous medium (degenerate) diffusion is smaller than that for the porous medium equation without chemotaxis. As we know, this is a new result not shown in the existing literature. The result appears to be a l…
In this paper we study the so-called large solutions of elliptic semilinear equations with non null sources term, thus solutions blowing up on the boundary of the domain for which reason they are greater than any other solution whenever Weak Maximum Principle holds. The main topic about large solutions is uniqueness results and their behavior near the boundary. It is much less than being simple. The structure of the semilinear equations considered includes the well known Keller-Osserman integral and an assumption on the ellipticity of the leading part of the differential operator. In our study…
The aim of this paper is to offer an original and comprehensive spectral theoretical approach to the study of convergence to equilibrium, and in particular of the hypocoercivity phenomenon, for contraction semigroups in Hilbert spaces. Our approach rests on a commutation relationship for linear operators known as intertwining, and we utilize this identity to transfer spectral information from a known, reference semigroup $\tilde{P} = (e^{-t\tilde{\mathbf A}})_{t \geq 0}$ to a target semigroup $P$ which is the object of study. This allows us to obtain conditions under which $P$ satisfies a hypo…
We establish spectral estimates at a critical energy level for $h$-pseudors . Via a trace formula, we compute the contribution of isolated (non-extremum) critical points under a condition of "real principal type". The main result holds for all dimensions, for a singularity of any finite order and can be invariantly expressed in term of the geometry of the singularity. When the singularities are not integrable on the energy surface the results are significative since the order w.r.t. $h$ of the spectral distributions are bigger than in the regular setting.
