Spanish. An English version will be published in the future. Some of the results in the first version were already familiar for categoy-theorists. In this second version, we notice this, and those results are credited. However, our elementary proofs and statements could become useful for non specialists. Thus, we have preserved them. Also, a gap was found in Lemma 2.3, which has been corrected, together with some other minor innacuracies, in the revised version
Starting from a comonad G on a category A, and a functor L : B -> A with a right adjoint R : A -> B, we will give a parametrization of the functors K from B to the category of all G-coalgebras that factorize throughout L in terms of homomorphisms of comonads from LR to G. Next, we will see under which conditions one of these functors K admits a right adjoint D. We will characterize when D is full and faithful, and we will conclude our general results by characterizing when K establishes an equivalence between the category B and the category of G-coalgebras. Obviously, the functors characterized in this way are, a fortiori, comonadic but, in contrast with the approach of Beck's Theorem, the comonad G is here given beforehand, and each functor K corresponds to a ``representation'' of G. Beck's theorem deals with the situation where G = LR. We apply our general results to the case of corings over firm rings.
In this article we describe properties of the 2-functor from the 2-category of comonads to the 2-category of functors that sends a comonad to its forgetful functor. This allows us to describe contexts where algebras over a monad are enriched tensored and cotensored over coalgebras over a comonad.
Delta lenses are a kind of morphism between categories which are used to model bidirectional transformations between systems. Classical state-based lenses, also known as very well-behaved lenses, are both algebras for a monad and coalgebras for a comonad. Delta lenses generalise state-based lenses, and while delta lenses have been characterised as certain algebras for a semi-monad, it is natural to ask if they also arise as coalgebras. This short paper establishes that delta lenses are coalgebras for a comonad, through showing that the forgetful functor from the category of delta lenses over a…
We investigate which aspects of recent developments on Galois corings and comodules admit a formulation in terms of comonads. This approach hopefully will permit of focusing in what is specific in each particular future situation, having some relevant general results for granted. The general theory is applied to the study of comodules over corings over firm rings.
We apply the Acyclicity Theorem of Hess, Kerdziorek, Riehl, and Shipley (recently corrected by Garner, Kedziorek, and Riehl) to establishing the existence of model category structure on categories of coalgebras over comonads arising from simplicial adjunctions, under mild conditions on the adjunction and the associated comonad. We study three concrete examples of such adjunctions where the left adjoint is comonadic and show that in each case the component of the derived counit of the comparison adjunction at any fibrant object is an isomorphism, while the component of the derived unit at any 1…
Let K be a comonad on a model category M. We provide conditions under which the associated category of K-coalgebras admits a model category structure such that the forgetful functor to M creates both cofibrations and weak equivalences. We provide concrete examples that satisfy our conditions and are relevant in descent theory and in the theory of Hopf-Galois extensions. These examples are specific instances of the following categories of comodules over a coring. For any semihereditary commutative ring R, let A be a dg R-algebra that is homologically simply connected. Let V be an A-coring that …
The definition of Azumaya algebras over commutative rings $R$ require the tensor product of modules over $R$ and the twist map for the tensor product of any two $R$-modules. Similar constructions are available in braided monoidal categories and Azumaya algebras were defined in these settings. Here we introduce Azumaya monads on any category $\A$ by considering a monad $\bF$ on $\A$ endowed with a distributive law $λ: FF\to FF$ satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation (BD-law). This allows to introduce an {\em opposite monad} $\bF^\la$ and a monad structure on $FF^\la$. For an {\em Azumaya monad} we…
We study dualities between Lie algebras and Lie coalgebras, and their respective (co)representations. To allow a study of dualities in an infinite-dimensional setting, we introduce the notions of Lie monads and Lie comonads, as special cases of YB-Lie algebras and YB-Lie coalgebras in additive monoidal categories. We show that (strong) dualities between Lie algebras and Lie coalgebras are closely related to (iso)morphisms between associated Lie monads and Lie comonads. In the case of a duality between two Hopf algebras -in the sense of Takeuchi- we recover a duality between a Lie algebra and a…
We construct $W$-types in the category of coalgebras for a cartesian comonad. It generalizes the constructions of $W$-types in presheaf toposes and gluing toposes.
This paper determines what structure is needed for internal homs in a monoidal category C to be liftable to the category C^G of Eilenberg-Moore coalgebras for a monoidal comonad G on C. We apply this to lift star-autonomy with the view to recasting the definition of quantum groupoid.
Batanin and Markl's operadic categories are categories in which each map is endowed with a finite collection of "abstract fibres" -- also objects of the same category -- subject to suitable axioms. We give a reconstruction of the data and axioms of operadic categories in terms of the décalage comonad D on small categories. A simple case involves unary operadic categories -- ones wherein each map has exactly one abstract fibre -- which are exhibited as categories which are, first of all, coalgebras for the comonad D, and, furthermore, algebras for the monad induced on the category of D-coalgebr…
We develop a Galois (descent) theory for comonads within the framework of bicategories. We give generalizations of Beck's theorem and the Joyal-Tierney theorem. Many examples are provided, including classical descent theory, Hopf-Galois theory over Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids, Galois theory for corings and group-corings, and Morita-Takeuchi theory for corings. As an application we construct a new type of comatrix corings based on (dual) quasi bialgebras.
We construct a `weak' version EM^w(K) of Lack & Street's 2-category of monads in a 2-category K, by replacing their compatibility constraint of 1-cells with the units of monads by an additional condition on the 2-cells. A relation between monads in EM^w(K) and composite pre-monads in K is discussed. If K admits Eilenberg-Moore constructions for monads, we define two symmetrical notions of `weak liftings' for monads in K. If moreover idempotent 2-cells in K split, we describe both kinds of a weak lifting via an appropriate pseudo-functor EM^w(K) --> K. Weak entwining structures and partial entw…
We prove that cloven Grothendieck fibrations over a fixed base $\ct{B}$ are the pseudo-coalgebras for a lax idempotent 2-comonad on $\ct{Cat}/\ct{B}$. We show this via an original observation that the known colax idempotent 2-monad for fibrations over a fixed base has a right 2-adjoint. As an important consequence, we obtain an original cofree construction of a fibration on a functor. We also give a new, conceptual proof of the fact that the forgetful 2-functor from split fibrations to cloven fibrations over a fixed base has both a left 2-adjoint and a right 2-adjoint, in terms of coherence ph…
After recalling the definition of a bicoalgebroid, we define comodules and modules over a bicoalgebroid. We construct the monoidal category of comodules, and define Yetter--Drinfel'd modules over a bicoalgebroid. It is proved that the Yetter--Drinfel'd category is monoidal and pre--braided just as in the case of bialgebroids, and is embedded into the one--sided center of the comodule category. We proceed to define Braided Cocommutative Coalgebras (BCC) over a bicoalgebroid, and dualize the scalar extension construction of Brzezinski and Militaru [2] and Balint and Slachanyi [1], originally app…
Let $A$ be a ring and $\M_A$ the category of $A$-modules. It is well known in module theory that for any $A $-bimodule $B$, $B$ is an $A$-ring if and only if the functor $-\otimes_A B: \M_A\to \M_A$ is a monad (or triple). Similarly, an $A $-bimodule $\C$ is an $A$-coring provided the functor $-\otimes_A\C:\M_A\to \M_A$ is a comonad (or cotriple). The related categories of modules (or algebras) of $-\otimes_A B$ and comodules (or coalgebras) of $-\otimes_A\C$ are well studied in the literature. On the other hand, the right adjoint endofunctors $\Hom_A(B,-)$ and $\Hom_A(\C,-)$ are a comonad and…
In the theory of coalgebras $C$ over a ring $R$, the rational functor relates the category of modules over the algebra $C^*$ (with convolution product) with the category of comodules over $C$. It is based on the pairing of the algebra $C^*$ with the coalgebra $C$ provided by the evaluation map $\ev:C^*\ot_R C\to R$. We generalise this situation by defining a {\em pairing} between endofunctors $T$ and $G$ on any category $\A$ as a map, natural in $a,b\in \A$, $$β_{a,b}:\A(a, G(b)) \to \A(T(a),b),$$ and we call it {\em rational} if these all are injective. In case $\bT=(T,m_T,e_T)$ is a monad an…
In this article, the author analyses distributive and mixed distributive laws and some of their equivalences through the use of 2-adjunctions of the type $\Adj$-$\Mnd$. As far as the distributive laws are concerned, the equivalence between this structures and monads objects in the 2-category $\Adj_{\R}(Cat)$ is analysed, where these monad objects will correspond to liftings to the category of algebras of Eilenberg-Moore. Second, the equivalence between these structures and a pair consisting of a Eilenberg-Moore lifting and a Kleisli extension is analysed too, according to E. Manes and P. Mulry…
The category of internal coalgebras in a cocomplete category $\mathcal{C}$ with respect to a variety $\mathcal{V}$ is equivalent to the category of left adjoint functors from $\mathcal{V}$ into $\mathcal{C}$. This can be seen best when considering such coalgebras as finite coproduct preserving functors from $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$, the dual of the Lawvere theory of $\mathcal{V}$, into $\mathcal{C}$: coalgebras are restrictions of left adjoints and any such left adjoint is the left Kan extension of a coalgebra along the embedding of $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$ into $\mat…
{\em Galois comodules} over a coring can be characterised by properties of the relative injective comodules. They motivated the definition of {\em Galois functors} over some comonad (or monad) on any category and in the first section of the present paper we investigate the role of the relative injectives (projectives) in this context. Then we generalise the notion of corings (derived from an entwining of an algebra and a coalgebra) to the entwining of a monad and a comonad. Hereby a key role is played by the notion of a {\em grouplike natural transformation} $g:I\to G$ generalising the groupli…
It is well established that equational algebraic theories, and the monads they generate, can be used to encode computational effects. An important insight of Power and Shkaravska is that comodels of an algebraic theory T -- i.e., models in the opposite category Set^op -- provide a suitable environment for evaluating the computational effects encoded by T. As already noted by Power and Shkaravska, taking comodels yields a functor from accessible monads to accessible comonads on Set. In this paper, we show that this functor is part of an adjunction -- the "costructure-cosemantics adjunction" of …
A coring (A,C) consists of an algebra A and a coalgebra C in the monoidal category of A-bimodules. Corings and their comodules arise naturally in the study of Hopf-Galois extensions and descent theory, as well as in the study of Hopf algebroids. In this paper, we address the question of when two corings in a symmetric monoidal model category V are homotopically Morita equivalent, i.e., when their respective categories of comodules are Quillen equivalent. The category of comodules over the trivial coring (A,A) is isomorphic to the category of A-modules, so the question above englobes that of wh…
