A scalar valued random field is called operator-scaling if it satisfies a self-similarity property for some matrix E with positive real parts of the eigenvalues. We present a moving average and a harmonizable representation of stable operator scaling random fields by utilizing so called E-homogeneous functions. These fields also have stationary increments and are stochastically continuous. In the Gaussian case critical Hölder-exponents and the Hausdorff-dimension of the sample paths are also obtained.
We investigate the sample paths regularity of operator scaling alpha-stable random fields. Such fields were introduced as anisotropic generalizations of self-similar fields and satisfy a scaling property for a real matrix E. In the case of harmonizable operator scaling random fields, the sample paths are locally Hölderian and their Hölder regularity is characterized by the eigen decomposition with respect to E. In particular, the directional Hölder regularity may vary and is given by the eigenvalues of E. In the case of moving average operator scaling random alpha-stable random fields, with 0<…
Branching-stable processes have recently appeared as counterparts of stable subordinators, when addition of real variables is replaced by branching mechanism for point processes. Here, we are interested in their domains of attraction and describe explicit conditions for a branching random walk to converge after a proper magnification to a branching-stable process. This contrasts with deep results that have been obtained during the last decade on the asymptotic behavior of branching random walks and which involve either shifting without rescaling, or demagnification.
We consider a discrete-time branching random walk in the boundary case, where the associated random walk is in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law with $1<α<2$. We prove that the derivative martingale $D_n$ converges to a non-trivial limit $D_\infty$ under some regular conditions. We also study the additive martingale $W_n$, and prove $n^\frac{1}αW_n$ converges in probability to a constant multiple of $D_\infty$.
We prove the existence of scaling limits for the projection on the backbone of the random walks on the Incipient Infinite Cluster and the Invasion Percolation Cluster on a regular tree. We treat these projected random walks as randomly trapped random walks (as defined in [BCČR15]) and thus describe these scaling limits as spatially subordinated Brownian motions
We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of random critical Boltzmann planar maps in which the degree of a typical face belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (1,2]$. We prove that when conditioning such maps to have $n$ vertices, or $n$ edges, or $n$ faces, the vertex-set endowed with the graph distance suitably rescaled converges in distribution towards the celebrated Brownian map when $α=2$, and, after extraction of a subsequence, towards another `$α$-stable map' when $α<2$, which improves on a first result due to Le Gall & Miermont who assumed slightly more regular…
We prove the emergence of stable fluctuations for reaction-diffusion in random environment with Weibull tails. This completes our work around the quenched to annealed transition phenomenon in this context of reaction diffusion. In [9], we had already considered the model treated here and had studied fully the regimes where the law of large numbers is satisfied and where the fluctuations are Gaussian, but we had left open the regime of stable fluctuations. Our work is based on a spectral approach centered on the classical theory of rank-one perturbations. It illustrates the gradual emergence of…
We prove a metric space scaling limit for a critical random graph with independent and identically distributed degrees having power-law tail behaviour with exponent $α+1$, where $α\in (1,2)$. The limiting components are constructed from random $\mathbb{R}$-trees encoded by the excursions above its running infimum of a process whose law is locally absolutely continuous with respect to that of a spectrally positive $α$-stable Lévy process. These spanning $\mathbb{R}$-trees are measure-changed $α$-stable trees. In each such $\mathbb{R}$-tree, we make a random number of vertex-identifications, who…
We establish scaling limits for the random walk whose state space is the range of a simple random walk on the four-dimensional integer lattice. These concern the asymptotic behaviour of the graph distance from the origin and the spatial location of the random walk in question. The limiting processes are the analogues of those for higher-dimensional versions of the model, but additional logarithmic terms in the scaling factors are needed to see these. The proof applies recently developed machinery relating the scaling of resistance metric spaces and stochastic processes, with key inputs being n…
This article introduces the operator-scaling random ball model, generalizing the isotropic random ball models investigated recently in the literature to anisotropic setup. The model is introduced as a generalized random field and results on weak convergence are established in the space of tempered distributions.
We consider biased random walks in positive random conductances on the d-dimensional lattice in the zero-speed regime and study their scaling limits. We obtain a functional Law of Large Numbers for the position of the walker, properly rescaled. Moreover, we state a functional Central Limit Theorem where an atypical process, related to the Fractional Kinetics, appears in the limit.
A scaling limit for the simple random walk on the largest connected component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph in the critical window is deduced. The limiting diffusion is constructed using resistance form techniques, and is shown to satisfy the same quenched short-time heat kernel asymptotics as the Brownian motion on the continuum random tree.
We consider so-called discrete snakes obtained from size-conditioned critical Bienaymé-Galton-Watson trees by assigning to each node a random spatial position in such a way that the increments along each edge are i.i.d. When the offspring distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (1,2]$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the tail distribution of the spatial increments for this spatial tree to converge, in a functional sense, towards the Brownian snake driven by the $α$-stable Lévy tree. We also study the case of heavier tails, and apply our…
Here we introduce some new classes of discrete stable random variables, which are useful for understanding of a new general notion of stability of random variables called us as casual stability. There are given some examples of casual and discrete stable random variables. We also propose a class of discrete stable random variables for a description of rating of scientific work.
We give conditions under which a scalar random variable T can be coupled to a random scaling factor $ξ$ such that T and $ξ$T are rendered stochastically independent. A similar result is obtained for random measures. One consequence is a generalization of a result by Pitman and Yor on the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution to its negative parameter range. Another application are diffusion excursions straddling an exponential random time.
We consider random rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that are distributed according to a Poisson random measure, i.e., independently and uniformly scattered in the plane. The distributions of the length and the width of the rectangles are heavy-tailed with different parameters. We investigate the scaling behaviour of the related random fields as the intensity of the random measure grows to infinity while the mean edge lengths tend to zero. We characterise the arising scaling regimes, identify the limiting random fields and give statistical properties of these limits.
In the paper we present simple examples of linear random fields defined on $\ZZ^2$ and $\ZZ^3$ which exhibit the scaling transition phenomenon. These examples lead to more general definition of the scaling transition and allow to understand the mechanism of appearance of this phenomenon better. In previous papers devoted to the scaling transition it was proved mainly for random fields with finite variance and long-range dependence. We consider random fields with finite and infinite variance. Our examples show that the scaling transition phenomenon can be observed for linear random fields with …
We obtain a complete description of anisotropic scaling limits and the existence of scaling transition for nonlinear functions (Appell polynomials) of stationary linear random fields on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with moving average coefficients decaying at possibly different rate in the horizontal and vertical direction. The paper extends recent results on scaling transition for linear random fields in Puplinskaitė and Surgailis (2016), Puplinskaitė and Surgailis (2015).
We introduce a new self-interacting random walk on the integers in a dynamic random environment and show that it converges to a pure diffusion in the scaling limit. We also find a lower bound on the diffusion coefficient in some special cases. With minor changes the same argument can be used to prove the scaling limit of the corresponding walk in Z^d.
We are concerned with scaling limits of the solutions to stochastic differential equations with stationary coefficients driven by Poisson random measures and Brownian motions. We state an annealed convergence theorem, in which the limit exhibits a diffusive or superdiffusive behavior, depending on the integrability properties of the Poisson random measure
In this paper we construct vector-valued multi operator-stable random measures that behave locally like operator-stable random measures. The space of integrable functions is characterized in terms of a certain quasi-norm. Moreover, a multi operator- stable moving-average representation of a random field is presented which behaves locally like an operator-stable random field which is also operator-self-similar.
We introduce a system of coalescing random paths with radialbehavior in a subsetof the plane. We call it theDiscrete Radial Poissonian Web. We show that underdiffusive scaling this family converges in distribution toa mapping of a restrictionof the Brownian Web.
We prove that the local times of a sequence of Sinai's random walks convergence to those of Brox's diffusion by proper scaling, which is accord with the result of Seignourel (2000). Our proof is based on the convergence of the branching processes in random environment by Kurtz (1979).
We obtain a complete description of anisotropic scaling limits of random grain model on the plane with heavy tailed grain area distribution. The scaling limits have either independent or completely dependent increments along one or both coordinate axes and include stable, Gaussian and some `intermediate' infinitely divisible random fields. Asymptotic form of the covariance function of the random grain model is obtained. Application to superposed network traffic is included.
We propose an aggregated random-field model, and investigate the scaling limits of the aggregated partial-sum random fields. In our model, each copy of the random field in the aggregation is built from two correlated one-dimensional random walks, each with a random persistence parameter. When the persistence parameters are independent, the scaling limit is a fractional Brownian sheet. When the persistence parameters are dependent, the scaling limit is more delicate, and in particular depends on the growth rates of the underlying rectangular region along two directions: at different rates diffe…
We show that the trace of the null recurrent biased random walk on a Galton-Watson tree properly renormalized converges to the Brownian forest. Our result extends to the setting of the random walk in random environment on a Galton-Watson tree.
Let $β$ be the growth exponent of the loop-erased random walk (LERW) in three dimensions. We prove that the scaling limit of 3D LERW is $h$-Hölder continuous almost surely for all $h < 1/β$, while not $1/β$-Hölder continuous almost surely.
These are the notes for a series of lectures given at the Clay Mathematical Institute Summer School in Buzios, July 11 - August 7, 2010. We review some of the recent aspects of scaling limits of random trees and planar maps, in particular via their relations with bijective enumeration and Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.
We give a new proof of a theorem by Le Gall & Paulin, showing that scaling limits of random planar quadrangulations are homeomorphic to the 2-sphere. The main geometric tool is a reinforcement of the notion of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, called 1-regular convergence, that preserves topological properties of metric surfaces.
We study the sample paths properties of Operator scaling Gaussian random fields. Such fields are anisotropic generalizations of anisotropic self-similar random fields as anisotropic Fractional Brownian Motion. Some characteristic properties of the anisotropy are revealed by the regularity of the sample paths. The sharpest way of measuring smoothness is related to these anisotropies and thus to the geometry of these fields.
The first passage time process of a Lévy subordinator with heavy-tailed Lévy measure has long-range dependent paths. The random fluctuations that appear under two natural schemes of summation and time scaling of such stochastic processes are shown to converge weakly. The limit process is fractional Brownian motion in one case and a non-Gaussian and non-stable process in the other case. The latter appears to be of independent interest as a random process that arises under the influence of coexisting Gaussian and stable domains of attraction and is known from other applications to provide a brid…
Kesten et al.( 1975) proved the stable law for the transient RWRE (here we refer it as the $κ$-transient RWRE). After that, some similar interesting properties have also been revealed for its continuous counterpart, the diffusion proces in a Brownian environment with drift $κ$. In the present paper we will investigate the connections between these two kind of models, i.e., we will construct a sequence of the $κ$-transient RWREs and prove it convergence to the diffusion proces in a Brownian environment with drift $κ$ by proper scaling. To this end, we need a counterpart convergence for the $κ$-…
It is well known (Donsker's Invariance Principle) that the random walk converges to Brownian motion by scaling. In this paper, we will prove that the scaled local time of the $(1,L)-$random walk converges to that of the Brownian motion. The results was proved by Rogers (1984) in the case $L=1$. Our proof is based on the intrinsic multiple branching structure within the $(1,L)-$random walk revealed by Hong and Wang (2013).
Multivariate tempered stable random measures (ISRMs) are constructed and their corresponding space of integrable functions is characterized in terms of a quasi-norm utilizing the so-called Rosinski measure of a tempered stable law. In the special case of exponential tempered ISRMs operator-fractional tempered stable random fields are presented by a moving-average and a harmonizable representation, respectively.
We consider a random walk on a Galton-Watson tree in random environment, in the subdiffusive case. We prove the convergence of the renormalised height function of the walk towards the continuous-time height process of a spectrally positive strictly stable Lévy process, jointly with the convergence of the renormalised range of the walk towards the real tree coded by the latter continuous-time height process.
We prove that the uniform unlabelled unrooted tree with n vertices and vertex degrees in a fixed set converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense after a suitable rescaling to the Brownian continuum random tree. This proves a conjecture by Aldous. Moreover, we establish Benjamini-Schramm convergence of this model of random trees.
Two classes of multivariate random fields with operator-stable marginals are constructed. The random fields $\mathbb{X}=\{X(t) : t \in \mathbb{R}^d \}$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$ are invariant in law under operator-scaling in both the time-domain and the state-space. The construction is based on operator-stable random measures utilising certain homogeneous functions.
Recently, Hammond and Sheffield introduced a model of correlated random walks that scale to fractional Brownian motions with long-range dependence. In this paper, we consider a natural generalization of this model to dimension $d\geq 2$. We define a $\mathbb Z^d$-indexed random field with dependence relations governed by an underlying random graph with vertices $\mathbb Z^d$, and we study the scaling limits of the partial sums of the random field over rectangular sets. An interesting phenomenon appears: depending on how fast the rectangular sets increase along different directions, different r…
We derive Donsker-Vardhan type results for functionals of the occupation times when the underlying random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ is in the domain of attraction of an operator-stable law on $\mathbb R^d$. Applications to random walks on wreath products (also known as lamplighter groups) are given.
We obtain a complete description of anisotropic scaling limits and the existence of scaling transition for a class of negatively dependent linear random fields on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ with moving-average coefficients $a(t,s)$ decaying as $|t|^{-q_1}$ and $|s|^{-q_2}$ in the horizontal and vertical directions, $q_1^{-1} + q_2^{-1} < 1 $. The scaling limits are taken over rectangles whose sides increase as $λ$ and $λ^γ$ when $λ\to \infty$, for any $γ>0$. We prove that the scaling transition %and the structure of the scaling diagram in this model is closely related to the presence or absence of the e…
We prove that the local time process of a planar simple random walk, when time is scaled logarithmically, converges to a non-degenerate pure jump process. The convergence takes place in the Skorokhod space with respect to the $M1$ topology and fails to hold in the $J1$ topology.
We consider two models of one-dimensional random walks among biased i.i.d. random conductances: the first is the classical exponential tilt of the conductances, while the second comes from the effect of adding an external field to a random walk on a point process (the bias depending on the distance between points). We study the case when the walk is transient to the right but sub-ballistic, and identify the correct scaling of the random walk: we find $α\in[0,1]$ such that $\log X_n / \log n \to α$. Interestingly, $α$ does not depend on the intensity of the bias in the first case, but it does i…
We consider operator scaling $α$-stable random sheets, which were introduced in [12]. The idea behind such fields is to combine the properties of operator scaling $α$-stable random fields introduced in [6] and fractional Brownian sheets introduced in [14]. We establish a general uniform modulus of continuity of such fields in terms of the polar coordinates introduced [6]. Based on this, we determine the box-counting dimension and the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of a trajectory of such fields over a non-degenerate cube $I \subset Rd$.
Attributing a positive value τ_x to each x in Z^d, we investigate a nearest-neighbour random walk which is reversible for the measure with weights (τ_x), often known as "Bouchaud's trap model". We assume that these weights are independent, identically distributed and non-integrable random variables (with polynomial tail), and that d > 4. We obtain the quenched subdiffusive scaling limit of the model, the limit being the fractional kinetics process. We begin our proof by expressing the random walk as a time change of a random walk among random conductances. We then focus on proving that the tim…
Stable laws can be tempered by modifying the Lévy measure to cool the probability of large jumps. Tempered stable laws retain their signature power law behavior at infinity, and infinite divisibility. This paper develops random walk models that converge to a tempered stable law under a triangular array scheme. Since tempered stable laws and processes are useful in statistical physics, these random walk models can provide a basic physical model for the underlying physical phenomena.
We study K-processes, which are Markov processes in a denumerable state space, all of whose elements are stable, with the exception of a single state, starting from which the process enters finite sets of stable states with uniform distribution. We show how these processes arise, in a particular instance, as scaling limits of the REM-like trap model ``at low temperature'', and subsequently derive aging results for those models in this context.
We find an expression for the joint Laplace transform of the law of $(T_{[x,+\infty[},X_{T_{[x,+\infty[}})$ for a Lévy process $X$, where $T_{[x,+\infty[}$ is the first hitting time of $[x,+\infty[$ by $X$. When $X$ is an $α$-stable Lévy process, with $1<α<2$, we show how to recover from this formula the law of $X_{T_{[x,+\infty[}}$; this result was already obtained by D. Ray, in the symmetric case and by N. Bingham, in the case when $X$ is non spectrally negative. Then, we study the behaviour of the time of first passage $T_{[x,+\infty[},$ conditioned to $\{X_{T_{[x,+\infty[}} -x \leq h\}$ wh…
We study the scaling limit and prove the law of large numbers for weakly pinned Gaussian random fields under the critical situation that two possible candidates of the limits exist at the level of large deviation principle. This paper extends the results of [3], [7] for one dimensional fields to higher dimensions: d \geq 3, at least if the strength of pinning is sufficiently large.
It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.
Using lattice approximations of Euclidean space, we develop a way to approximate stable processes that are represented by stochastic integrals over Euclidean space. Via a stable version of the Lindeberg-Feller Theorem we show that the approximations weakly converge as the mesh-size goes to zero. As an application, we improve upon previous approximation schemes for integrals with respect to linear fractional stable motions.
We obtain decay rates of probabilities of tails of polynomials in several independent random variables with heavy tails and derive stable limit theorems for nonconventional sums of such polynomials
