We give a general description of the structure of a discrete double groupoid (with an extra, quite natural, filling condition) in terms of groupoid factorizations and groupoid 2-cocycles with coefficients in abelian group bundles. Our description goes as follows: To any double groupoid, we associate an abelian group bundle and a second double groupoid, its frame. The frame satisfies that every box is determined by its edges, and thus is called a `slim' double groupoid. In a first step, we prove that every double groupoid is obtained as an extension of its associated abelian group bundle by its frame. In a second, independent, step we prove that every slim double groupoid with filling condition is completely determined by a factorization of a certain canonically defined `diagonal' groupoid.
We give a rather general construction of double categories and so, under further conditions, double groupoids, from a structure we call a `double module'. We also give a homotopical construction of a double groupoid from a triad consisting of a space, two subspaces, and a set of base points, under a condition which also implies that this double groupoid contains two second relative homotopy groups.
We consider the categorical equivalence between crossed modules over groupoids and double groupoids with thin structures; and by this equivalence, we prove how normality and quotient concepts are related in these two categories and give some examples of these objects.
We prove that every slim double Lie groupoid with proper core action is completely determined by a factorization of a certain canonically defined "diagonal" Lie groupoid.
In this note we show that the known relation between double groupoids and matched pairs of groups may be extended, or seems to extend, to the triple case. The references give some other occurrences of double groupoids.
The authors have used generalised Galois Theory to construct a homotopy double groupoid of a surjective fibration of Kan simplicial sets. Here we apply this to construct a new homotopy double groupoid of a map of spaces, which includes constructions by others of a 2-groupoid, cat^1-group or crossed module. An advantage of our construction is that the double groupoid can give an algebraic model of a foliated bundle.
In this paper using split extensions of group-groupoids we obtain the notion of crossed modules over group-grouoids which are also called 2-groups and we prove a categorical equivalence of these types of crossed modules and double group-groupoids which are internal to the category of group-groupoids. This equivalence enables us to produce more examples of double groupoids.
We study extensions of double groupoids in the sense of \cite{AN2} and show some classical results of group theory extensions in the case of double groupoids. For it, given a double groupoid $(\mathcal{B}; \mathcal{V},\mathcal{H}; \mathcal{P})$ \emph{acting} on an abelian group bundle $\mathbf{K} \to \mathcal{P}$, we introduce a cohomology double complex, in a similar way as was done in \cite{AN2} and we show that the extensions of $\mathcal{F}$ by $\mathbf{K}$ are classified by the total first cohomology group of the associated total complex. With the aim to extend the above results to the to…
This work contributes to clarifying several relationships between certain higher categorical structures and the homotopy types of their classifying spaces. Double categories (Ehresmann, 1963) have well-understood geometric realizations, and here we deal with homotopy types represented by double groupoids satisfying a natural `filling condition'. Any such double groupoid characteristically has associated to it `homotopy groups', which are defined using only its algebraic structure. Thus arises the notion of `weak equivalence' between such double groupoids, and a corresponding `homotopy category…
In this work we study the notion of Whitehead sequence in the category of crossed modules and actions of crossed modules. As expected, Whitehead sequences in that context are the same as crossed squares. We investigate under which conditions a Whitehead sequence of crossed modules gives rise to an internal groupoid in the category of crossed modules. In other words, we explicitly investigate the so called "Smith is Huq" condition in the category of crossed modules.
A coherent presentation of an n-category is a presentation by generators, relations and relations among relations. Confluent and terminating rewriting systems generate coherent presentations, whose relations among relations are defined by confluence diagrams of critical branchings. This article introduces a procedure to compute coherent presentations when the rewrite relations are defined modulo a set of axioms. Our coherence results are formulated using the structure of n-categories enriched in double groupoids, whose horizontal cells represent rewriting paths, vertical cells represent the co…
This paper is the second in a series exploring the properties of a functor which assigns a homotopy double groupoid with connections to a Hausdorff space. We show that this functor satisfies a version of the van Kampen theorem, and so is a suitable tool for nonabelian, 2-dimensional, local-to-global problems. The methods are analogous to those developed by Brown and Higgins for similar theorems for other higher homotopy groupoids. An integral part of the proof is a detailed discussion of commutative cubes in a double category with connections, and a proof of the key result that any composition…
In this note a functorial approach to the integration problem of an LA-groupoid to a double Lie groupoid is discussed. To do that, we study the notions of fibred products in the categories of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such. In particular, it turns out, that the fibred product of Lie algebroids along integrable morphisms is always integrable by a fibred product of Lie groupoids. We show that to every LA-groupoid with integrable top structure one can associate a differentiable graph in the category of Lie groupoids, which is…
Our main aim is to associate a holonomy Lie groupoid to the connective structure of an abelian gerbe. The construction has analogies with a procedure for the holonomy Lie groupoid of a foliation, in using a locally Lie groupoid and a globalisation procedure. We show that path connections and 2-holonomy on line bundles may be formulated using the notion of a connection pair on a double category, due to Brown-Spencer, but now formulated in terms of double groupoids using the thin fundamental groupoids introduced by Caetano-Mackaay-Picken. To obtain a locally Lie groupoid to which globalisation a…
In this paper we introduce a description of ordered groupoids as a particular type of double categories. This enables us to turn Lawson's correspondence between ordered groupoids and left-cancellative categories into a biequivalence. We use this to identify which ordered functors are maps of sites in the sense that they give rise to geometric morphisms between the induced sheaf categories, and establish a Comparison Lemma for maps between Ehresmann sites.
Transformation groupoids associated to group actions capture the interplay between global and local symmetries of structures described in set-theoretic terms. This paper examines the analogous situation for structures described in category-theoretic terms, where symmetry is expressed as the action of a 2-group G (equivalently, a categorical group) on a category C. It describes the construction of a transformation groupoid in diagrammatic terms, and considers this construction internal to Cat, the category of categories. The result is a double category C//G which describes the local symmetries …
The coordinate projective line over a field is seen as a groupoid with a further `projection' structure. We investigate conversely to what extent such an, abstractly given, groupoid may be coordinatized by a suitable field constructed out of the geometry.
In this paper we apply some tools developed in our previous work on Grothendieck $\infty$-groupoids to the finite-dimensional case of weak 3-groupoids. We obtain a semi-model structure on the category of Grothendieck 3-groupoids of suitable type, thanks to the construction of an endofunctor $\mathbb{P}$ that has enough structure to behave like a path object. This makes use of a recognition principle we prove here that characterizes globular theories whose models can be viewed as Grothendieck $n$-groupoids (for $0\leq n \leq \infty$). Finally, we prove that the obstruction in arbitrary dimensio…
In this paper we construct two groupoids from morphisms of groupoids, with one from a categorical viewpoint and the other from a geometric viewpoint. We show that for each pair of groupoids, the two kinds of groupoids of morphisms are equivalent. Then we study the automorphism groupoid of a groupoid.
We study internal structures in regular categories using monoidal methods. Groupoids in a regular Goursat category can equivalently be described as special dagger Frobenius monoids in its monoidal category of relations. Similarly, connectors can equivalently be described as Frobenius structures with a ternary multiplication. We study such ternary Frobenius structures and the relationship to binary ones, generalising that between connectors and groupoids.
A groupoid is a small category in which each morphism has an inverse. A topological groupoid is a groupoid in which both sets of objects and morphisms have topologies such that all groupoid structure maps are continuous. The notion of monodromy groupoid of a topological groupoid generalises those of fundamental groupoid and universal covering. It was earlier proved that the monodromy of a locally sectionable topological groupoid has a topological groupoid structure satisfying some properties. In this paper a similar problem is studied for compatible locally trivial topological groupoids.
We examine a semigroup analogue of the Kumjian-Renault representation of C*-algebras with Cartan subalgebras on twisted groupoids. Specifically, we show how to represent semigroups with distinguished normal subsemigroups as `slice-sections' of groupoid bundles.
In this paper we develop star topological and topological group-groupoid structures of monodromy groupoid and prove that the monodromy groupoid of a topological group-groupoid is also a topological group-groupoid.
We prove that the folk model structure on strict $\infty$-categories transfers to the category of strict $\infty$-groupoids (and more generally to the category of strict $(\infty, n)$-categories), and that the resulting model structure on strict $\infty$-groupoids coincides with the one defined by Brown and Golasinski via crossed complexes.
Affine structures on a Lie groupoid, including affine $k$-vector fields, $k$-forms and $(p,q)$-tensors are studied. We show that the space of affine structures is a 2-vector space over the space of multiplicative structures. Moreover, the space of affine multivector fields has a natural graded strict Lie 2-algebra structure and affine (1,1)-tensors constitute a strict monoidal category. Such higher structures can be seen as the categorification of multiplicative structures on a Lie groupoid.
In this PhD thesis, we have studied certain geometric structures over Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks. This thesis is based on the work [arXiv:2103.04560, arXiv:2012.08447, arXiv:2012.08442, arXiv:1907.00375]. In [arXiv:1907.00375], we have discussed the correspondence between two notions of a gerbe over a stack. In [arXiv:2012.08447], we have developed the notion of Chern-Weil map for principal bundles over a Lie groupoid when the Lie groupoid is equipped with a connection. In [arXiv:2012.08442], we discuss the notion of connection on the principal bundle over a Deligne Mumford stack …
We prove that every open $σ$-locally Polish groupoid $G$ is Borel equivalent to the groupoid of models on the Urysohn sphere $\mathbb{U}$ of an $\mathcal{L}_{ω_1ω}$-sentence in continuous logic. In particular, the orbit equivalence relations of such groupoids are up to Borel bireducibility precisely those of Polish group actions, answering a question of Lupini. Analogously, every non-Archimedean (i.e., every unit morphism has a neighborhood basis of open subgroupoids) open quasi-Polish groupoid is Borel equivalent to the groupoid of models on $\mathbb{N}$ of an $\mathcal{L}_{ω_1ω}$-sentence in…
The word `double' was used by Ehresmann to mean `an object X in the category of all X'. Double categories, double groupoids and double vector bundles are instances, but the notion of Lie algebroid cannot readily be doubled in the Ehresmann sense, since a Lie algebroid bracket cannot be defined diagrammatically. In this paper we use the duality of double vector bundles to define a notion of double Lie algebroid, and we show that this abstracts the infinitesimal structure (at second order) of a double Lie groupoid. We further show that the cotangent of either Lie algebroid in a Lie bialgebroid h…
An answer to the question investigated in this paper brings a new characterization of internal groupoids such that: (a) it holds even when finite limits are not assumed to exist; (b) it is a full subcategory of the category of involutive-2-links, that is, a category whose objects are morphisms equipped with a pair of interlinked involutions. This result highlights the fact that even thought internal groupoids are internal categories equipped with an involution, they can equivalently be seen as tri-graphs with an involution. Moreover, the structure of a tri-graph with an involution can be furth…
By extending type theory with a universe of definitionally associative and unital polynomial monads, we show how to arrive at a definition of opetopic type which is able to encode a number of fully coherent algebraic structures. In particular, our approach leads to a definition of $\infty$-groupoid internal to type theory and we prove that the type of such $\infty$-groupoids is equivalent to the universe of types. That is, every type admits the structure of an $\infty$-groupoid internally, and this structure is unique.
In this paper, for given an algebraic theory $T$ whose category $C$ of models is semi-abelian, we consider the topological models of $T$ called topological $T$-algebras and obtain some results related to the fundamental groups of topological $T$-algebras. We also deal with the internal groupoid structure in the category of models providing that the fundamental groupoid deduces a functor from topological $T$-algebras to the internal groupoids in $C$ and prove a criterion for the lifting of such an internal groupoid structure to the covering groupoids.
The structure of monoidal categories in which every arrow is invertible is analyzed in this paper, where we develop a 3-dimensional Schreier-Grothendieck theory of non-abelian factor sets for their classification. In particular, we state and prove precise classification theorems for those monoidal groupoids whose isotropy groups are all abelian, as well as for their homomorphisms, by means of Leech's cohomology groups of monoids.
We define the notion of whiskered categories and groupoids, showing that whiskered groupoids have a commutator theory. So also do whiskered $R$-categories, thus answering questions of what might be `commutative versions' of these theories. We relate these ideas to the theory of Leibniz algebras, but the commutator theory here does not satisfy the Leibniz identity. We also discuss potential applications and extensions, for example to resolutions of monoids.
