The $M$-triangle of a ranked locally finite poset $P$ is the generating function $\sum_{u,w\in P} ^{}μ(u,w) x^{\rk u}y^{\rk w}$, where $μ(.,.)$ is the Möbius function of $P$. We compute the $M$-triangle of Armstrong's poset of $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions for the root systems of type $E_7$ and $E_8$. For the other types except $D_n$ this had been accomplished in the earlier paper "The $F$-triangle of the generalised cluster complex." Altogether, this almost settles Armstrong's $F=M$ Conjecture predicting a surprising relation between the $M$-triangle of the $m$-divisible partitions poset and the $F$-triangle (a certain refined face count) of the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading, the only gap remaining in type $D_n$. Moreover, we prove a reciprocity result for this $M$-triangle, again with the possible exception of type $D_n$. Our results are based on the calculation of certain decomposition numbers for the reflection groups of types $E_7$ and $E_8$, which carry in fact finer information than does the $M$-triangle. The decomposition numbers for the other exceptional reflection groups had been computed in the earlier paper. We present a conjectured formula for the type $A_n$ decomposition numbers.
We prove that the generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups of exceptional type obey two different cyclic sieving phenomena, as conjectured by Armstrong, respectively by Bessis and Reiner. This manuscript accompanies the paper "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type" [arXiv:1001.0028], for which it provides the computational details.
We present the proof of the cyclic sieving conjectures for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups due to Armstrong, respectively to Bessis and Reiner, for the 26 exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups. The computational details are provided in the manuscript "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details" [arXiv:1001.0030].
The $F$-triangle is a refined face count for the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading. We compute the $F$-triangle explicitly for all irreducible finite root systems. Furthermore, we use these results to partially prove the "$M=F$ Conjecture" of Armstrong which predicts a surprising relation between the $F$-triangle and the Möbius function of his $m$-divisible partition poset associated to a finite root system.
To a crystallographic root system Φ, and a positive integer k, there are associated two Fuss-Catalan objects, the set of nonnesting partitions NN^(k)(Φ), and the cluster complex Δ^(k)(Φ). These posess a number of enumerative coincidences, many of which are captured in a surprising identity, first conjectured by Chapoton for k=1 and later generalized to k>1 by Armstrong. We prove this conjecture, obtaining some structural and enumerative results on NN^(k)(Φ) along the way, including an earlier conjecture by Fomin and Reading giving a refined enumeration by Fuß-Narayana numbers.
Given a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$, a positive integer $d$, and types $T_1,T_2,...,T_d$ (in the sense of the classification of finite Coxeter groups), we compute the number of decompositions $c=\si_1\si_2 cdots\si_d$ of a Coxeter element $c$ of $W$, such that $\si_i$ is a Coxeter element in a subgroup of type $T_i$ in $W$, $i=1,2,...,d$, and such that the factorisation is "minimal" in the sense that the sum of the ranks of the $T_i$'s, $i=1,2,...,d$, equals the rank of $W$. For the exceptional types, these decomposition numbers have been computed by the first author. The type $A_n$ d…
We study extremal type problem arising from the question: What is the maximum number of edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect matchings on a set S of 2n points in the plane such that their union is a triangle-free geometric graph? We approach this problem by considering four different situations of S. In particular, in the general position, we obtain (i) a sufficient condition for the existence of n edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect matchings in the general position whose union is a maximal triangle-free geometric graph, and (ii) a lower bound on the number of edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect …
We consider $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,mn\}$ with the property that for some $t\leq n$ no block contains more than one of the first $t$ integers. We give a closed formula for the number of multi-chains of such non-crossing partitions with prescribed number of blocks. Building on this result, we compute Chapoton's $M$-triangle in this setting and conjecture a combinatorial interpretation for the $H$-triangle. This conjecture is proved for $m=1$.
We investigate preference profiles for a set $\mathcal{V}$ of voters, where each voter $i$ has a preference order $\succ_i$ on a finite set $A$ of alternatives (that is, a linear order on $A$) such that for each two alternatives $a,b\in A$, voter $i$ prefers $a$ to $b$ if $a\succ_i b$. Such a profile is narcissistic if each alternative $a$ is preferred the most by at least one voter. It is single-peaked if there is a linear order $\triangleright^{\text{sp}}$ on the alternatives such that each voter's preferences on the alternatives along the order $\triangleright^{\text{sp}}$ are either strict…
For each finite real reflection group $W$, we identify a copy of the type-$W$ simplicial generalised associahedron inside the corresponding simplicial permutahedron. This defines a bijection between the facets of the generalised associahedron and the elements of the type $W$ non-crossing partition lattice which is more tractable than previous such bijections. We show that the simplicial fan determined by this associahedron coincides with the Cambrian fan for $W$.
We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.
In this thesis, we introduced and carried out a combinatorial study of permutations that avoid one or two patterns of length 3 according to the statistic number of crossings. For this purpose, we manipulated a bijection of Elizalde and Pak and constructed other bijections that preserve the number of crossings. As results, we found, throughout these bijections, various relationships on the distributions of the number of crossings on restricted permutations as well as combinatorial interpretations in terms of the number of crossings on permutations with forbidden patterns of some well known tria…
A rectilinear drawing of a graph $G$ is optimal if it has the smallest number of crossings among all rectilinear drawings of $G$. In this paper it is shown that for $n\geq 8$, the second convex hull of every optimal rectilinear drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ is a triangle.
Tverberg's theorem is one of the cornerstones of discrete geometry. It states that, given a set $X$ of at least $(d+1)(r-1)+1$ points in $\mathbb R^d$, one can find a partition $X=X_1\cup \ldots \cup X_r$ of $X$, such that the convex hulls of the $X_i$, $i=1,\ldots,r$, all share a common point. In this paper, we prove a strengthening of this theorem that guarantees a partition which, in addition to the above, has the property that the boundaries of full-dimensional convex hulls have pairwise nonempty intersections. Possible generalizations and algorithmic aspects are also discussed. As a concr…
We introduce a model for random geodesic drawings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, where we select the vertices in each bipartite class of $K_{n,n}$ with respect to two non-degenerate probability measures on $\mathbb{S}^2$. It has been proved recently that many such measures give drawings whose crossing number approximates the Zarankiewicz number (the conjectured crossing number of $K_{n,n}$). In this paper we consider the intersection graphs associated with such random drawings. We prove that for any probability measures, the resul…
We study non-crossing frameworks in the plane for which the classical reciprocal on the dual graph is also non-crossing. We give a complete description of the self-stresses on non-crossing frameworks whose reciprocals are non-crossing, in terms of: the types of faces (only pseudo-triangles and pseudo-quadrangles are allowed); the sign patterns in the self-stress; and a geometric condition on the stress vectors at some of the vertices. As in other recent papers where the interplay of non-crossingness and rigidity of straight-line plane graphs is studied, pseudo-triangulations show up as objects…
For two collections of nonnegative and suitably normalised weights $\W=(\W_j)$ and $\V=(\V_{n,k})$, a probability distribution on the set of partitions of the set $\{1,...,n\}$ is defined by assigning to a generic partition $\{A_j, j\leq k\}$ the probability $\V_{n,k} \W_{|A_1|}... \W_{|A_k|}$, where $|A_j|$ is the number of elements of $A_j$. We impose constraints on the weights by assuming that the resulting random partitions $Π_n$ of $[n]$ are consistent as $n$ varies, meaning that they define an exchangeable partition of the set of all natural numbers. This implies that the weights $\W$ mu…
A construction described by the current author in 2017 uses two linear `prototype' graphs to build a compound graph with Ramsey properties inherited from the prototypes. This paper describes a generalisation of that construction which has produced improved lower bounds in many cases for multicolour Ramsey numbers. The resulting graphs are linear, as before, and under certain specific conditions set out here, they can be cyclic. The mechanism of the new construction requires that the first prototype contains a triangle-free `template' in one colour, with defined properties. This paper shows tha…
