A Bernoulli random walk is a random trajectory starting from 0 and having i.i.d. increments, each of them being $+1$ or -1, equally likely. The other families cited in the title are Bernoulli random walks under various conditionings. A peak in a trajectory is a local maximum. In this paper, we condition the families of trajectories to have a given number of peaks. We show that, asymptotically, the main effect of setting the number of peaks is to change the order of magnitude of the trajectories. The counting process of the peaks, that encodes the repartition of the peaks in the trajectories, is also studied. It is shown that suitably normalized, it converges to a Brownian bridge which is independent of the limiting trajectory. Applications in terms of plane trees and parallelogram polyominoes are also provided.
We study the density of the time average of the Brownian meander/excursion over the time interval [0,1]. Moreover we give an expression for the Brownian meander/excursion conditioned to have a fixed time average.
The Laplace transform of the $d$-dimensional distribution of Brownian excursion is expressed as the Laplace transform of the $(d+1)$-dimensional distribution of an auxiliary Markov process, started from a $σ$-finite measure and with the roles of arguments and times interchanged. A similar identity holds for the Laplace transform of a generalized meander, which is expressed as the Laplace transform of the same auxiliary Markov process, with a different initial law.
We study limit distributions for random variables defined in terms of coefficients of a power series which is determined by a certain linear functional equation. Our technique combines the method of moments with the kernel method of algebraic combinatorics. As limiting distributions the area distributions of the Brownian excursion and meander occur. As combinatorial applications we compute the area laws for discrete excursions and meanders with an arbitrary finite set of steps and the area distribution of column convex polyominoes. As a by-product of our approach we find the joint distribution…
Several Brownian areas are considered in this paper: the Brownian excursion area, the Brownian bridge area, the Brownian motion area, the Brownian meander area, the Brownian double meander area, the positive part of Brownian bridge area, the positive part of Brownian motion area. We are interested in the asymptotics of the right tail of their density function. Inverting a double Laplace transform, we can derive, in a mechanical way, all terms of an asymptotic expansion. We illustrate our technique with the computation of the first four terms. We also obtain asymptotics for the right tail of th…
For three constrained Brownian motions, the excursion, the meander, and the reflected bridge, the densities of the maximum and of the time to reach it were expressed as double series by Majumdar, Randon-Furling, Kearney, and Yor (2008). Some of these series were regularized by Abel summation. Similar results for Bessel processes were obtained by Schehr and Le Doussal (2010) using the real space renormalization group method. Here this work is reviewed, and extended from the point of view of one-dimensional diffusion theory to some other diffusion processes including skew Brownian bridges and ge…
We derive P(M,t_m), the joint probability density of the maximum M and the time t_m at which this maximum is achieved for a class of constrained Brownian motions. In particular, we provide explicit results for excursions, meanders and reflected bridges associated with Brownian motion. By subsequently integrating over M, the marginal density P(t_m) is obtained in each case in the form of a doubly infinite series. For the excursion and meander, we analyse the moments and asymptotic limits of P(t_m) in some detail and show that the theoretical results are in excellent accord with numerical simula…
Consider the supercritical branching random walk on the real line in the boundary case and the associated Gibbs measure $ν_{n,β}$ on the $n^\text{th}$ generation, which is also the polymer measure on a disordered tree with inverse temperature $β$. The convergence of the partition function $W_{n,β}$, after rescaling, towards a nontrivial limit has been proved by A\"ıdékon and Shi in the critical case $β= 1$ and by Madaule when $β>1$. We study here the near-critical case, where $β_n \to 1$, and prove the convergence of $W_{n,β_n}$, after rescaling, towards a constant multiple of the limit of the…
Consider a branching random walk on the real line. Madaule showed the renormalized trajectory of an individual selected according to the critical Gibbs measure converges in law to a Brownian meander. Besides, Chen proved that the renormalized trajectory leading to the leftmost individual at time $n$ converges in law to a standard Brownian excursion. In this article, we prove that the renormalized trajectory of an individual selected according to a supercritical Gibbs measure also converges in law toward the Brownian excursion. Moreover, refinements of this results enables to express the probab…
We review combinatorial properties of solitons of the Box-Ball system introduced by Takahashi and Satsuma in 1990. Starting with several definitions of the system, we describe ways to identify solitons and review a proof of the conservation of the solitons under the dynamics. Ferrari, Nguyen, Rolla and Wang 2018 proposed a soliton decomposition of a configuration into a family of vectors, one for each soliton size. Based on this decompositions, the authors have proposed a family of measures on the set of excursions which induces invariant distributions for the Box-Ball System. In this paper, w…
We use the Real Space Renormalization Group (RSRG) method to study extreme value statistics for a variety of Brownian motions, free or constrained such as the Brownian bridge, excursion, meander and reflected bridge, recovering some standard results, and extending others. We apply the same method to compute the distribution of extrema of Bessel processes. We briefly show how the continuous time random walk (CTRW) corresponds to a non standard fixed point of the RSRG transformation.
We introduce a method to exactly generate bridge trajectories for discrete-time random walks, with arbitrary jump distributions, that are constrained to initially start at the origin and return to the origin after a fixed time. The method is based on an effective jump distribution that implicitly accounts for the bridge constraint. It is illustrated on various jump distributions and is shown to be very efficient in practice. In addition, we show how to generalize the method to other types of constrained random walks such as generalized bridges, excursions, and meanders.
A watermelon is a set of $p$ Bernoulli paths starting and ending at the same ordinate, that do not intersect. In this paper, we show the convergence in distribution of two sorts of watermelons (with or without wall condition) to processes which generalize the Brownian bridge and the Brownian excursion in $\mathbb{R}^p$. These limit processes are defined by stochastic differential equations. The distributions involved are those of eigenvalues of some Hermitian random matrices. We give also some properties of these limit processes.
We propose a method to exactly generate bridge run-and-tumble trajectories that are constrained to start at the origin with a given velocity and to return to the origin after a fixed time with another given velocity. The method extends the concept of effective Langevin equations, valid for Markovian stochastic processes such as Brownian motion, to a non-Markovian stochastic process driven by a telegraphic noise, with exponentially decaying correlations. We obtain effective space-time dependent tumbling rates that implicitly accounts for the bridge constraint. We extend the method to other type…
We study here a detailed conjecture regarding one of the most important cases of anomalous diffusion, i.e the behavior of the "ant in the labyrinth". It is natural to conjecture (see [16] and [8]) that the scaling limit for random walks on large critical random graphs exists in high dimensions, and is universal. This scaling limit is simply the natural Brownian Motion on the Integrated Super-Brownian Excursion. We give here a set of four natural sufficient conditions on the critical graphs and prove that this set of assumptions ensures the validity of this conjecture. The remaining future task…
