Handle additions producing essential surfaces

We construct a small, hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ such that, for any integer $g\geq 2$, there are infinitely many separating slopes $r$ in $\partial M$ so that $M(r)$, the 3-manifold obtained by attaching a 2-handle to $M$ along $r$, is hyperbolic and contains an essential separating closed surface of genus $g$. The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results on Dehn filling, and it also contrasts sharply with the known finiteness result on handle addition for the cases $g=0,1$. Our 3-manifold $M$ is the complement of a hyperbolic, small knot in a handlebody of genus 3.

Rigidity and symmetry of cylindrical handlebody-knots

Essential disks and semi-essential surfaces in 3-manifolds

If M is a manifold with compressible boundary, we analyze essential disks in M, as well as incompressible, but not necessarily boundary incompressible, surfaces in M. We are most interested in the case where M is a handlebody or compression body. The analysis depends on a new normal surface theory. Small knots and large handle additions

We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ (with $\partial M$ totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer $g> 0$ there are infinitely many separating slopes $r$ on $\partial M$ so that $M[r]$, the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to $M$ along $r$, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus $g$ and is still hyperbolic. Infinite order corks via handle diagrams

Dehn fillings of knot manifolds containing essential twice-punctured tori

We show that if a hyperbolic knot manifold $M$ contains an essential twice-punctured torus $F$ with boundary slope $β$ and admits a filling with slope $α$ producing a Seifert fibred space, then the distance between the slopes $α$ and $β$ is less than or equal to $5$ unless $M$ is the exterior of the figure eight knot. Dual decompositions of 4-manifolds II: linear invariants

This paper continues the study of decompositions of a smooth 4-manifold into two handlebodies with handles of index $\leq2$. Part I gave existence results in terms of spines and chain complexes over the fundamental group of the ambient manifold. Band taut sutured manifolds

Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. Dehn filling of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with geodesic boundary

We define for each g>=2 and k>=0 a set M_{g,k} of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with $k$ toric cusps and a connected totally geodesic boundary of genus g. Manifolds in M_{g,k} have Matveev complexity g+k and Heegaard genus g+1, and their homology, volume, and Turaev-Viro invariants depend only on g and k.
