Let G be a finite group that acts on an abelian monoid A. If f: A -> G is a map so that f(a f(a)(b)) = f(a)f(b), for all a, b in A, then the submonoid S = {(a, f(a)) | a in A} of the associated semidirect product of A and G is said to be a monoid of IG-type. If A is a finitely generated free abelian monoid of rank n and G is a subgroup of the symmetric group Sym_n of degree n, then these monoids first appeared in the work of Gateva-Ivanova and Van den Bergh (they are called monoids of I-type) and later in the work of Jespers and Okninski. It turns out that their associated semigroup algebras share many properties with polynomial algebras in finitely many commuting variables. In this paper we first note that finitely generated monoids S of IG-type are epimorphic images of monoids of I-type and their algebras K[S] are Noetherian and satisfy a polynomial identity. In case the group of fractions of S also is torsion-free then it is characterized when K[S] is a maximal order. It turns out that they often are, and hence these algebras again share arithmetical properties with natural classes of commutative algebras. The characterization is in terms of prime ideals of S, in particular G-orbits of minimal prime ideals in A play a crucial role. Hence, we first describe the prime ideals of S. It also is described when the group of fractions is torsion-free.
A finitely generated group or monoid is said to be context-free if it has context-free word problem. In this note, we give an example of a context-free monoid, none of whose maximal subgroups are finitely generated. This answers a question of Brough, Cain & Pfeiffer on whether the group of units of a context-free monoid is always finitely generated, and highlights some of the contrasts between context-free monoids and context-free groups.
We study maximal subsemigroups of the monoid T(X) of all full transformations on the set X=N of natural numbers containing a given subsemigroup W of T(X) where each element of a given set $U$ is a generator of T(X) modulo W. This note continue the study of maximal subsemigroups on the monoid of all full transformations on a infinite set.

We introduce a new invariant describing the structure of sets of lengths in atomic monoids and domains. For an atomic monoid $H$, let $Δ_ρ (H)$ be the set of all positive integers $d$ which occur as differences of arbitrarily long arithmetical progressions contained in sets of lengths having maximal elasticity $ρ(H)$. We study $Δ_ρ (H)$ for transfer Krull monoids of finite type (including commutative Krull domains with finite class group) with methods from additive combinatorics, and also for a class of weakly Krull domains (including orders in algebraic number fields) for which we use ideal t…
We study acts and modules of maximal growth over finitely generated free monoids and free associative algebras as well as free groups and free group algebras. The maximality of the growth implies some other specific properties of these acts and modules that makes them close to the free ones; at the same time, we show that being a strong "infiniteness" condition, the maximality of the growth can still be combined with various finiteness conditions, which would normally make finitely generated acts finite and finitely generated modules finite-dimensional.
We compute the quiver of any monoid that has a basic algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. More generally, we reduce the computation of the quiver over a splitting field of a class of monoids that we term rectangular monoids (in the semigroup theory literature the class is known as $\mathbf{DO}$) to representation theoretic computations for group algebras of maximal subgroups. Hence in good characteristic for the maximal subgroups, this gives an essentially complete computation. Since groups are examples of rectangular monoids, we cannot hope to do better than this…
In this paper we study finite monoids M such that the group algebras over a domain R for all Schutzenberger groups of M are cell algebras. We show that for any such M the monoid algebra A over R has a standard cell algebra structure. Using properties of cell algebras we then find conditions for A to be quasi-hereditary and we show that if such an M is an inverse semi-group and R is a field k, then A is semi-simple if and only if the group algebras over k for all maximal subgroups of M are semi-simple. Finally, we show that for any "compatible" twisting of M into R the twisted monoid algebra is…
We construct certain monoids, called tied monoids. These monoids result to be semidirect products finitely presented and commonly built from braid groups and their relatives acting on monoids of set partitions. The nature of our monoids indicate that they should give origin to new knot algebras; indeed, our tied monoids include the tied braid monoid and the tied singular braid monoid, which were used, respectively, to construct new polynomial invariants for classical links and singular links. Consequently, we provide a mechanism to attach an algebra to each tied monoid. To build the tied monoi…
The algebraic monoid structure of an incidence algebra is investigated. We show that the multiplicative structure alone determines the algebra automorphisms of the incidence algebra. We present a formula that expresses the complexity of the incidence monoid with respect to the two sided action of its maximal torus in terms of the zeta polynomial of the poset. In addition, we characterize the finite (connected) posets whose incidence monoids have complexity $\leq 1$. Finally, we determine the covering relations of the adherence order on the incidence monoid of a star poset.
Let $\mathcal O$ be a holomorphy ring in a global field $K$, and $R$ a classical maximal $\mathcal O$-order in a central simple algebra over $K$. We study sets of lengths of factorizations of cancellative elements of $R$ into atoms (irreducibles). In a large majority of cases there exists a transfer homomorphism to a monoid of zero-sum sequences over a ray class group of $\mathcal O$, which implies that all the structural finiteness results for sets of lengths---valid for commutative Krull monoids with finite class group---hold also true for $R$. If $\mathcal O$ is the ring of algebraic intege…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a prime Noetherian algebra K[S] of a submonoid S of a polycyclic-by-finite group G to be a maximal order. These conditions are entirely in terms of the monoid S. This extends earlier results of Brown concerned with the group ring case and of the authors for the case where K[S] satisfies a polynomial identity.
Let $(H,\a_H)$ be a Hom-Hopf algebra, $(A,\a_A)$ a right $H$-comodule algebra and $(C,\a_C)$ a left $H$-module coalgebra. Then we have the category $_A\mathcal{M}(H)^C$ of Hom-type Doi-Hopf modules. The aim of this paper is to make the category $_A\mathcal{M}(H)^C$ into a braided monoidal category. Our construction unifies quasitriangular and coquasitriangular Hom-Hopf algebras and Hom-Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We study tensor identities for monoidal categories of Hom-type Doi-Hopf modules. Finally we show that the category $_A\mathcal{M}(H)^C$ is isomorphic to $A\#C^*$-module category.
We give a topological proof that a free inverse monoid on one or more generators is neither of type left-$FP_2$ nor right-$FP_2$. This strengthens a classical result of Schein that such monoids are not finitely presented as monoids.
In this note, we introduce monoidal subcategories of the tensor category of finite-dimensional representations of a simply-laced quantum affine algebra, parametrized by arbitrary Dynkin quivers. For linearly oriented quivers of types A and D, we show that these categories provide monoidal categorifications of cluster algebras of the same type. The proof is purely representation-theoretical, in the spirit of [arXiv:0903.1452].
Let $K[HK_Θ]$ denote the Hecke-Kiselman algebra of a finite oriented graph $Θ$ over an algebraically closed field $K$. All irreducible representations, and the corresponding maximal ideals of $K[HK_Θ]$, are characterized in case this algebra satisfies a polynomial identity. The latter condition corresponds to a simple condition that can be expressed in terms of the graph $Θ$. The result shows a surprising similarity to the classical results on representations of finite semigroups; namely every representation either comes form an idempotent in the Hecke-Kiselman monoid $HK_Θ$ (and hence it is $…
We give an overview of a number of Schreier-type extensions of monoids and discuss the relation between them. We begin by discussing the characterisations of split extensions of groups, extensions of groups with abelian kernel and finally non-abelian group extensions. We see how these characterisations may be immediately lifted to Schreier split extensions, special Schreier extensions and Schreier extensions respectively. Finally, we look at weakenings of these Schreier extensions and provide a unified account of their characterisation in terms of relaxed actions.
Let $M$ be a monoid that is embeddable in a group. We consider the topos $\mathbf{PSh}(M)$ of sets equipped with a right $M$-action, and we study the subtoposes that are of monoid type, i.e. the subtoposes that are again of the form $\mathbf{PSh}(N)$ for $N$ a monoid. Our main result is that every subtopos of monoid type can be obtained by localization at a prime ideal of $M$. Conversely, we show that localization at a prime ideal produces a subtopos if and only if $M$ has the right Ore property with respect to the complement of the prime ideal. We demonstrate our calculations in some examples…
The class of finitely presented algebras over a field K with a set of generators a_1,...,a_n and defined by homogeneous relations of the form a_1a_2...a_n = a_{sigma(1)}a_{sigma(2)}...a_{sigma(n)}, where sigma runs through an abelian subgroup H of Sym_{n}, the symmetric group, is considered. It is proved that the Jacobson radical of such algebras is zero. Also, it is characterized when the monoid S_n(H), with the "same" presentation as the algebra, is cancellative in terms of the stabilizer of 1 and the stabilizer of n in H. This work is a continuation of earlier work of Cedo, Jespers and Okni…
We introduce the notion of an oplax Hopf monoid in any braided monoidal bicategory, generalizing that of a Hopf monoid in a braided monoidal category in an appropriate way. We show that Hopf V-categories introduced in [BCV16] are a particular type of oplax Hopf monoids in the monoidal bicategory Span|V described in [Böh17]. Finally, we introduce Frobenius V-categories as the Frobenius objects in the same monoidal bicategory.
