Let $P^{2n+1}$ be a two-cell complex which is formed by attaching a $(2n+1)$--cell to a $2m$--sphere by a suspension map. We construct a universal space $U$ for $P^{2n+1}$ in the category of homotopy associative, homotopy commutative $H$--spaces. By universal we mean that $U$ is homotopy associative, homotopy commutative, and has the property that any map $f\colon P^{2n+1}\lra Y$ to a homotopy associative, homotopy commutative $H$--space $Y$ extends to a uniquely determined $H$--map $\bar{f}\colon U\lra Y$. We then prove upper and lower bounds of the $H$--homotopy exponent of $U$. In the case of a mod~$p^r$ Moore space $U$ is the homotopy fibre $S^{2n+1}\{p^r\}$ of the $p^r$--power map on $S^{2n+1}$, and we reproduce Neisendorfer's result that $S^{2n+1}\{p^r\}$ is homotopy associative, homotopy commutative and that the $p^r$--power map on $S^{2n+1}\{p^r\}$ is null homotopic.
In this article, we prove that Buchstaber invariant of 4-dimensional real universal complex is no less than 24 as a follow-up to the work of Ayzenberg and Sun. Moreover, a lower bound for Buchstaber invariants of $n$-dimensional real universal complexes is given as an improvement of result of Erokhovets.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the homotopy groups of simply connected finite $p$-local complexes, and define a space to be locally hyperbolic if its homotopy groups have exponential growth. Under some certain conditions related to the functorial decomposition of loop suspension, we prove that the suspended finite complexes are locally hyperbolic if suitable but accessible information of the homotopy groups is known. In particular, we prove that Moore spaces are locally hyperbolic, and other candidates are also given.
We formalize an equivariant version of Bestvina-Brady discrete Morse theory, and apply it to Vietoris-Rips complexes in order to exhibit finite universal spaces for proper actions for all asymptotically CAT(0) groups.
Baues and Bleille showed that, up to oriented homotopy equivalence, a Poincare duality complex of dimension $n \ge 3$ with $(n-2)$-connected universal cover, is classified by its fundamental group, orientation class and the image of its fundamental class in the homology of the fundamental group. We generalise Turaev's results for the case $n=3$, by providing necessary and sufficient conditions for a triple $(G, ω, μ)$, comprising a group, $G$, $ω\in H^{1}(G;\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})$ and $μ\in H_{3}(G, \mathbb{Z}^ω)$ to be realised by a Poincaré duality complex of dimension $n$ with $(n-2)$-conn…
For a closed 3-manifold $M$ in a certain class, we give a presentation of the cellular chain complex of the universal cover of $M$. The class includes all surface bundles, some surgeries of knots in $S^3$, some cyclic branched cover of $S^3$, and some Seifert manifolds. In application, we establish a formula for calculating the linking form of a cyclic branched cover of $S^3$, and develop procedures of computing some Dijkgraaf-Witten invariants.
In this paper, we define and prove basic properties of complement polyhedral product spaces, dual complexes and polyhedral join complexes. Then we compute the universal algebra of polyhedral join complexes under certain split conditions and the Alexander duality isomorphism on certain polyhedral product spaces.
Turaev conjectured that the classification, realization and splitting results for Poincaré duality complexes of dimension $3$ (PD$_{3}$-complexes) generalize to PD$_{n}$-complexes with $(n-2)$-connected universal cover for $n \ge 3$. Baues and Bleile showed that such complexes are classified, up to oriented homotopy equivalence, by the triple consisting of their fundamental group, orientation class and the image of their fundamental class in the homology of the fundamental group, verifying Turaev's conjecture on classification. We prove Turaev's conjectures on realization and splitting. We sho…
Let $\mathbf{k}$ be the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ or the ring $\mathbb{Z}$. We study combinatorial and topological properties of the universal simplicial complexes $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ whose simplices are certain unimodular subsets of $\mathbf{k}^n$. As a main result we show that $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$, $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and the links of their simplicies are homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres specifying the exact number of spheres in the corresponding wedge decompositions. This is a generalisation of Davis and Januszkiewicz's result that $K(\mathbb{Z}^n)$ and $K(\mathbb{F}_2^n)…
In this paper, we define and prove basic properties of complement polyhedral product spaces, dual complexes and polyhedral product complexes. Then we compute the universal algebra of polyhedral product complexes under certain split conditions and the Alexander duality isomorphism on certain polyhedral product spaces.
We extend the homotopy theories based on point reduction for finite spaces and simplicial complexes to finite acyclic categories and $Δ$-complexes, respectively. The functors of classifying spaces and face posets are compatible with these homotopy theories. In contrast with the classical settings of finite spaces and simplicial complexes, the universality of morphisms and simplices plays a central role in this paper.
In this paper, we study the homotopy groups of a shrinking wedge $X$ of a sequence $\{X_j\}$ of non-simply connected CW-complexes. Using a combination of generalized covering space theory and shape theory, we construct a canonical homomorphism $$Θ:π_n(X)\to\prod_{j\in\mathbb{N}}\bigoplus_{π_1(X)/π_1(X_j)}π_n(X_j),$$ characterize its image, and prove that $Θ$ is injective whenever each universal cover $\widetilde{X}_j$ is $(n-1)$-connected. These results (1) provide a characterization of the $n$-th homotopy group of the shrinking wedge of copies of $\mathbb{RP}^n$, (2) provide a characterizatio…
We introduce a model structure on the category of graphs, which is Quillen equivalent to the category of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-spaces. A weak equivalence is a graph homomorphism which induces a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homotopy equivalence between their box complexes. The box complex is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-space associated to a graph, considered in the context of the graph coloring problem. In the proof, we discuss the universality problem of the Hom complex.
For $n \in \mathbb{N}$, let $h(n)$ denote the number of simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices up to homotopy equivalence. Here we prove that $h(n) \geq 2^{2^{0.02n}}$ when $n$ is large enough. Together with the trivial upper bound of $2^{2^n}$ on the number of labeled simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices this proves a conjecture of Kalai that $h(n)$ is doubly exponential in $n$.
We investigate the topologies of random geometric complexes built over random points sampled on Riemannian manifolds in the so-called "thermodynamic" regime. We prove the existence of universal limit laws for the topologies; namely, the random normalized counting measure of connected components (counted according to homotopy type) is shown to converge in probability to a deterministic probability measure. Moreover, we show that the support of the deterministic limiting measure equals the set of all homotopy types for Euclidean geometric complexes of the same dimension as the manifold.
It is noted that conjectures about the non-existence of universal compacta and compactifications of the given extension dimension for non finitely dominated complexes are not valid for all CW complexes of the form $L \vee S^{2}$, where $L$ is of finite type and has a finite fundamental group, but is not finitely dominated.
Let $M$ denote a two-dimensional Moore space (so $H_2(M; \Z) = 0$), with fundamental group $G$. The $M$-cellular spaces are those one can build from $M$ by using wedges, push-outs, and telescopes (and hence all pointed homotopy colimits). The question we address here is to characterize the class of $M$-cellular spaces by means of algebraic properties derived from the group $G$. We show that the cellular type of the fundamental group and homological information does not suffice, and one is forced to study a certain universal extension.
The Rips complex at scale r of a set of points X in a metric space is the abstract simplicial complex whose faces are determined by finite subsets of X of diameter less than r. We prove that for X in the Euclidean 3-space R^3 the natural projection map from the Rips complex of X to its shadow in R^3 induces a surjection on fundamental groups. This partially answers a question of Chambers, de Silva, Erickson and Ghrist who studied this projection for subsets of R^2. We further show that Rips complexes of finite subsets of R^n are universal, in that they model all homotopy types of simplicial co…
We investigate a notion of $\times$-homotopy of graph maps that is based on the internal hom associated to the categorical product in the category of graphs. It is shown that graph $\times$-homotopy is characterized by the topological properties of the $\Hom$ complex, a functorial way to assign a poset (and hence topological space) to a pair of graphs; $\Hom$ complexes were introduced by Lovász and further studied by Babson and Kozlov to give topological bounds on chromatic number. Along the way, we also establish some structural properties of $\Hom$ complexes involving products and exponentia…
