We study the combined effects of periodically varying carrying capacity and survival rates on the fish population in the ocean (sea). We introduce the Getz type delay differential equation model with a control parameter which describes how fish are harvested. We will modify and extend harvesting model of an exploited fish population to include periodic and rotational harvesting rates. We study the existence of global solutions for the initial value problem, extinction and persistence conditions, and the existence of periodic solutions.
In this paper, we consider a general single population model with delay and patch structure, which could model the population loss during the dispersal. It is shown that the model admits a unique positive equilibrium when the dispersal rate is smaller than a critical value. The stability of the positive equilibrium and associated Hopf bifurcation are investigated when the dispersal rate is small or near the critical value. Moreover, we show the effect of network topology on Hopf bifurcation values for a delayed logistic population model.
In this paper, we investigate a delayed reaction-diffusion-advection equation, which models the population dynamics in the advective heterogeneous environment. The existence of the nonconstant positive steady state and associated Hopf bifurcation are obtained. A weighted inner product associated with the advection rate is introduced to compute the normal forms, which is the main difference between Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction-diffusion-advection model and that for delayed reaction-diffusion model. Moreover, we find that the spatial scale and advection can affect Hopf bifurcation in th…
In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection model with time delay effect. The stability/instability of the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state and the associated Hopf bifurcation are investigated when the given parameter of the model is near the principle eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. Our result implies that time delay can make the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state unstable for a reaction-diffusion-advection model, and the model can exhibit oscillatory pattern through Hopf bifurcation.
In this paper, we show the existence of Hopf bifurcation of a delayed single population model with patch structure. The effect of the dispersal rate on the Hopf bifurcation is considered. Especially, if each patch is favorable for the species, we show that when the dispersal rate tends to zero, the limit of the Hopf bifurcation value is the minimum of the "local" Hopf bifurcation values over all patches. On the other hand, when the dispersal rate tends to infinity, the Hopf bifurcation value tends to that of the "average" model.
We discuss a bifurcation scenario which creates periodic pulsating solutions in slow-fast delayed systems through a cascade of almost simultaneous Hopf bifurcations. This scenario has been previously associated with formation of pulses in a delayed model of mode-locked semiconductor lasers. In this work, through a case study of several examples, we establish that a cascade of Hopf bifurcations can produce periodic pulses, with a period close to the delay time, in population dynamics models and explore the conditions that ensure the realization of this scenario near a transcritical bifurcation …
We study effects of strategy-dependent time delays on equilibria of evolving populations. It is well known that time delays may cause oscillations in dynamical systems. Here we report a novel behavior. We show that microscopic models of evolutionary games with strategy-dependent time delays lead to a new type of replicator dynamics. It describes the time evolution of fractions of the population playing given strategies and the size of the population. Unlike in all previous models, stationary states of such dynamics depend continuously on time delays. We show that in games with an interior stat…
This paper is concerned with the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts for a class of population dynamics model with quiescent stage and delay. First, we establish the comparison principle of solutions for the population dynamics model. Then, by the weighted energy method combining comparison principle, the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts of the population dynamics model under the quasi-monotonicity conditions is established.
We propose an alternative delayed population growth difference equation model based on a modification of the Beverton-Holt recurrence, assuming a delay only in the growth contribution that takes into account that those individuals that die during the delay, do not contribute to growth. The model introduced differs from existing delay difference equations in population dynamics, such as the delayed logistic difference equation, which was formulated as a discretization of the Hutchinson model. The analysis of our delayed difference equation model identifies an important critical delay threshold.…
We derive an alternative expression for a delayed logistic equation in which the rate of change in the population involves a growth rate that depends on the population density during an earlier time period. In our formulation, the delay in the growth term is consistent with the rate of instantaneous decline in the population given by the model. Our formulation is a modification of [Arino et al., J.~Theoret.~Biol.~241(1):109--119, 2006] by taking the intraspecific competition between the adults and juveniles into account. We provide a complete global analysis showing that no sustained oscillati…
We analyze a differential equation with a state-dependent delay that is implicitly defined via the solution of an ODE. The equation describes an established though little analyzed cell population model. Based on theoretical results of Hartung, Krisztin, Walther and Wu we elaborate conditions for the model ingredients, in particular vital rates, that guarantee the existence of a local semiflow. Here proofs are based on implicit function arguments. To show global existence, we adapt a theorem from a classical book on functional differential equations by Hale and Lunel, which gives conditions und…
In this paper, we proposed a population model depicting the dynamics of a prey species showing group defence against a generalist predator. The group defence characteristic is represented by a non-monotonic functional response. We have established the local stability of the model around the co-existent equilibrium solution using a local Lyapunov function. Condition for existence Hopf bifurcation is obtained along with its normal form. Numerical simulations have been done to confirm the obtained analytical results as well as to validate the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis of the parameters…
A delayed, discrete-time, prey-predator model with Allee effects imposed on prey and predator populations is defined, and dynamics of the system is characterized computationally. The parametric conditions for local asymptotic stability of equilibria are investigated with several illustrating examples. In addition, several periodic solutions were achieved. Furthermore, high degree of fractality of the prey-predator population trajectories is observed when the system is sufficiently delayed. This system has turned out to be a cooperative system, which is depicted using fractal dimension.
The traditional Wilson-Cowan model of excitatory and inhibitory mean field interactions in neuronal populations considers a weak Gamma distribution of time delays when processing inputs, and is obtained via a time-coarse graining technique that averages the population response. Previous analyses of the stability of the Wilson-Cowan model focused on more simplified cases, where the delays were either not present, constant or were of a specific type. Since these simplifications may significantly alter the behavior of the model, we focus on understanding the behavior of the system before time-cou…

The paper deals with a multiple species Lotka-Volterra model with infinite distributed delays and feedback controls, for which we assume a weak form of diagonal dominance of the instantaneous negative intra-specific terms over the infinite delay effect in both the population variables and controls. General sufficient conditions for the existence and attractivity of a saturated equilibrium are established. When the saturated equilibrium is on the boundary of $\R^n_+$, sharper criteria for the extinction of all or part of the populations are given. While the literature usually treats the case of…

Endowing nonlinear systems with safe behavior is increasingly important in modern control. This task is particularly challenging for real-life control systems that must operate safely in dynamically changing environments. This paper develops a framework for safety-critical control in dynamic environments, by establishing the notion of environmental control barrier functions (ECBFs). The framework is able to guarantee safety even in the presence of input delay, by accounting for the evolution of the environment during the delayed response of the system. The underlying control synthesis relies o…
Motivated by improving performance of a bi-stable vibration energy harvester (VEH) from the viewpoint of vibration control, the time-delayed feedback control of displacement and velocity are constructively proposed into an electromechanical coupled VEH mounted on a rotational automobile tire, which is subject to colored noise and the periodic excitation. Using the improved stochastic averaging procedure based on energy-dependent frequency, the expressions of stationary probability density (SPD) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are obtained analytically. Then, the efficiency of time-delayed feed…
In this paper, a brief review of delay population models and their applications in ecology is provided. The inclusion of diffusion and nonlocality terms in delay models has given more capabilities to these models enabling them to capture several ecological phenomena such as the Allee effect, waves of invasive species and spatio-temporal competitions of interacting species. Moreover, recent advances in the studies of traveling and stationary wave solutions of delay models are outlined. In particular, the existence of stationary and traveling wave solutions of delay models, stability of wave sol…
In this paper, we study a single-species population model with pulse toxicant input to a small polluted environment. The intrinsic rate of population is affected by environment and toxin in organisms. The toxin in organisms is influenced by toxin in environment and the food chain. A new mathematical model is derived. By the Pulse Compare Theorem, we find the surviving threshold of the population and obtain the sufficient conditions of persistence and extinction of the population.
We explore the bifurcations and dynamics of a scalar differential equation with a single constant delay which models the population of human hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. One parameter continuation reveals that with a delay of just a few days, stable periodic dynamics can be generated of all periods from about one week up to one decade! The long period orbits seem to be generated by several mechanisms, one of which is a canard explosion, for which we approximate the dynamics near the slow manifold. Two-parameter continuation reveals parameter regions with even more exotic dynami…
