Let X be a vector field on a compact connected manifold M. An important question in dynamical systems is to know when a function g:M -> R is a coboundary for the flow generated by X, i.e. when there exists a function f: M->R such that Xf=g. In this article we investigate this question for nilflows on nilmanifolds. We show that there exists countably many independent Schwartz distributions D_n such that any sufficiently smooth function g is a coboundary iff it belongs to the kernel of all the distributions D_n.
In the current note we extend results by Marmi, Moussa and Yoccoz about cohomological equations for interval exchange transformations to irreducible linear involutions.
We prove that the solutions of the cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps are Hölder continuous provided that the datum is of class $C^r$ with $r>1$ and belongs to a finite-codimension linear subspace.
We study the invariant distributions for the horocycle map on $Γ\backslash SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ and prove Sobolev estimates for the cohomological equation of the horocycle map. As an application, we obtain an estimate for the rate of equidistribution for horocycle maps on compact manifolds.
It is proved that bounded solutions of modified ($θ$-twisted) cohomological equations for expanding circle maps are $θ$-Hölder continuous but are not $(θ+γ)$-Hölder continuous for every $γ>0$ at almost every point. This gives new examples of "nonlinear" Weierstrass-like functions for which the optimal \holder exponent at most points is known.
We study the twisted cohomoligical equation over the geodesic flow on $SL(2,\mathbb{R})/Γ$. We characterize the obstructions to solving the twisted cohomological equation, construct smooth solution and obtain the tame Sobolev estimates for the solution, i.e, there is finite loss of regularity (with respect to Sobolev norms) between the twisted coboundary and the solution. We also give a tame splittings for non-homogeneous cohomological equations. The result can be viewed as a first step toward the application of KAM method in obtaining differential rigidity for partially hyperbolic actions in …
In this paper we give sufficient conditions for existence of a solution of cohomological equation for suspension flows over automorphisms of Markov compacta, which were introduced by Vershik and Ito. The main result (Theorem 1) can be regarded as a symbolic analogue of results due to Forni and Marmi, Moussa and Yoccoz for translation flows and interval exchange transformations.
We extend some results of Marmi--Moussa--Yoccoz on the cohomological equations and local conjugacy classes of interval exchange maps of restricted Roth type. In particular, we answer a question of Krikorian about the codimension of the local conjugacy class of self-similar interval exchange maps associated to the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau and the Ornithorynque.
Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a higher-rank connected semisimple Lie group with finite center and without compact factors. In any unitary representation $(π, \mathcal{H})$ of $\mathbb{G}$ without non-trivial $\mathbb{G}$-fixed vectors, we study the twisted cohomological equation $(X+m)f=g$, where $m\in\mathbb{R}$ and $X$ is in a $\mathbb{R}$-split Cartan subalgebra of $\text{Lie}(\mathbb{G})$. We characterize the obstructions to solving the cohomological equation, construct smooth solutions of the cohomological equation and obtain tame Sobolev estimates for $f$. We also study common solution to (the inf…
In the paper we consider the one-frequency cohomological equation \begin{equation*} (\partial_x + ω\partial_y) g(x,y) = a(x,y) \end{equation*} on the 2-torus with unknown $g$ and analytic initial data $a$. We identify all the frequencies $ω$ for which the equation has an analytic solution and express the analytic solvability condition in terms of two Brjuno-like functions, providing explicit estimates on the sup-norm of $g$. As an example we estimate the Brjuno-like functions for Diophantine and Khintchine-Lévy numbers. We also construct an example of an arbitrarily small function $a$ for whic…
We provide a general argument for the failure of Anosov-Katok-like constructions (as in \cite{AFKo2015} and \cite{NKInvDist}) to produce Cohomologically Rigid diffeomorphisms in manifolds other than tori. A $C^{\infty }$ smooth diffeomorphism $f $ of a compact manifold $M$ is Cohomologically Rigid iff the equation, known as Linear Cohomological one, \begin{equation*} ψ\circ f - ψ= φ\end{equation*} admits a $C^{\infty }$ smooth solution $ψ$ for every $φ$ in a codimension $1$ closed subspace of $C^{\infty } (M, \mathbb{C} )$. As an application, we show that no Cohomologically Rigid diffeomorphis…
We consider the reducibility problem of cocycles by isometries of Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces in the Livsic setting. We show that provided that the boundary cocycle (that acts on a compact space) is reducible in a suitable Hölder class, then the original cocycle by isometries (that acts on an unbounded space) is also reducible.
We study the cohomological equation for discrete horocycle maps on $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ and $SL(2,\mathbb R)\times SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ via representation theory. Specifically, we prove Hilbert Sobolev non-tame estimates for solutions of the cohomological equation of horocycle maps in representations of $SL(2,\mathbb R)$. Our estimates improve on previous results and are sharp up to a fixed, finite loss of regularity. Moreover, they are tame on a co-dimension one subspace of $sl(2, \mathbb R)$, and we prove tame cocycle rigidity for some two-parameter discrete actions, improving on a previous res…
In this article, we study analyticity properties of (directed) areas of epsilon-neighborhoods of orbits of parabolic germs. The article is motivated by the question of analytic classification using epsilon-neighborhoods of orbits in the simplest formal class. We show that the coefficient in front of epsilon^2 term in the asymptotic expansion in epsilon, which we call the principal part of the area, is a sectorially analytic function of initial point of the orbit. It satisfies a cohomological equation similar to the standard trivialization equation for parabolic diffeomorphisms. We give necessa…
We show that any measurable solution of the cohomological equation for a Hölder linear cocycle over a hyperbolic system coincides almost everywhere with a Hölder solution. More generally, we show that every measurable invariant conformal structure for a Hölder linear cocycle over a hyperbolic system coincides almost everywhere with a continuous invariant conformal structure. We also use the main theorem to show that a linear cocycle is conformal if none of its iterates preserve a measurable family of proper subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We use this to characterize closed negatively curved Rie…
These notes are based on lectures given by the author at the Summer School on Teichmüller dynamics, mapping class groups and applications in Grenoble, France, in June 2018 and at the Oberwolfach Seminar on Anisotropic Spaces and their Applications to Hyperbolic and Parabolic Systems in June 2019. We derive results about the so-called Ruelle resonances and the asymptotics of correlations for several classes of systems from known results on cohomological equations and invariant distributions for the respective unstable vector fields. In particular, we consider pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms on su…
In this paper we introduce the notion of generalized Gavrùta stability of functional equations in order to study, in the framework of a nonquasianalytic Carleman class, the stability of a class of cohomological equations.
Let $\mathbb{G}$ denote a higher rank $\mathbb R$-split simple Lie group of the following type: $SL(n,\mathbb R)$, $SO_o(m,m)$, $E_{6(6)}$, $E_{7(7)}$ and $E_{8(8)}$, where $m\geq 4$ and $n \geq 3$. We study the cohomological equation for discrete parabolic actions on $\mathbb G$ via representation theory. Specifically, we characterize the obstructions to solving the cohomological equation and construct smooth solutions with Sobolev estimates. We prove that global estimates of the solution are generally not tame, and our non-tame estimates in the case $\mathbb G=SL(n,\mathbb R)$ are sharp up t…
The dynamics of one parameter diagonal group actions on finite volume homogeneous spaces has a partially hyperbolic feature. In this paper we extend the Livšic type result to these possibly noncompact and nonaccessible systems. We also prove a central limit theorem for the Birkhoff averages of points on a horospherical orbit. The Livšic type result allows us to show that the variance of the central limit theorem is nonzero provided that the test function has nonzero mean with respect to an invariant probability measure.
We establish a theory for the existence and regularity of solutions to the cohomological equation over an accessible, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. As a by-product of our techniques, we show that for $r>1$, any $C^r$ homogeneous, locally compact submanifold of a $C^r$ manifold is in fact a $C^r$ submanifold.
In a recent article, we studied the global solvability of the so-called cohomological equation L_X f=g in C^\infty(\Rt), where X is a regular vector field on the plane and L_X the corresponding Lie derivative. In a joint article with T. Gramchev and A. Kirilov, we studied the existence of global L^1_{loc} weak solutions of the cohomological equation for vector fields depending only on one coordinate. Here we generalize the results of both articles by providing explicit conditions for the existence of global weak solutions to the cohomological equation when X is intrinsically Hamiltonian or of …
The functional equation $φ(Fx) - φ(x) = γ(x)$ is considered in topological, measurable and related categories from the point of view of functional analysis and general theory of dynamical systems. The material is presented in the form of a self-contained survey.
We consider a magnetic flow without conjugate points on a closed manifold $M$ with generating vector field $\G$. Let $h\in C^{\infty}(M)$ and let $θ$ be a smooth 1-form on $M$. We show that the cohomological equation \[\G(u)=h\circ π+θ\] has a solution $u\in C^{\infty}(SM)$ only if $h=0$ and $θ$ is closed. This result was proved in \cite{DP2} under the assumption that the flow of $\G$ is Anosov.
We exhibit an explicit full measure class of minimal interval exchange maps T for which the cohomological equation $Ψ-Ψ\circ T=Φ$ has a bounded solution $Ψ$ provided that the datum $Φ$ belongs to a finite codimension subspace of the space of functions having on each interval a derivative of bounded variation. The class of interval exchange maps is characterized in terms of a diophantine condition of ``Roth type'' imposed to an acceleration of the Rauzy--Veech--Zorich continued fraction expansion associated to T. Given any smooth circle diffeomorphism with irrational rotation number, we show that its invariant probability measure is the only invariant distribution (up to multiplication by a real constant). As a consequence of this, we show that the space of real smooth coboundaries of such a diffeomorphism is closed if and only if its rotation number is Diophantine.
We refine the theory of the cohomological equation for translation flows on higher genus surfaces with the goal of proving optimal results on the Sobolev regularity of solutions and of distributional obstructions. For typical translation surfaces our results are sharp and we find the expected relation between the regularity of the distributional obstructions and the Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich-Zorich renormalization cocycle. As a consequence we exactly determine the dimension of the space of obstructions in each Sobolev regularity class in terms of the Kontsevich-Zorich exponents. For…
For any unitary representation $(π,\mathcal{H})$ of $G=SL(n,\RR)$, $n\geq 3$ without non-trivial $G$-invariant vectors, we study smooth solutions of the cohomological equation $\mathfrak{u}f=g$ where $\mathfrak{u}$ is a vector in the root space of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\RR)$ and $g$ is a given vector in $\mathcal{H}$. We characterize the obstructions to solving the cohomological equation, construct smooth solutions of the cohomological equation and obtain tame Sobolev estimates for $f$. We also study common solutions to (the infinitesimal version of) the cocycle equation $\mathfrak{u}h=\mathfrak{v}…
We study hyperbolized versions of cohomological equations that appear with cocycles by isometries of the euclidean space. These (hyperbolized versions of) equations have a unique continuous solution. We concentrate in to know whether or not these solutions converge to a genuine solution to the original equation, and in what sense we can use them as good approximative solutions. The main advantage of considering solutions to hyperbolized cohomological equations is that they can be easily described, since they are global attractors of a naturally defined skew-product dynamics. We also include so…
We study the discrete cohomological equation of a hyperbolic affine automorphism Y of the torus (whose linear part is not necessarily diagonalisable). More precisely ; if d is the cobord operator defined by : d (h) = h-hoY for every element h of the Fréchet space E of the differentiable functions on the torus, we show that the image Im(d) is a closed of E and that consequently the space of cohomology H^1(Y; E):=E/Im(d) is a nontrivial Fréchet space. We also prove the existence of a continuous linear operator L defined from Im(d) to E such that for every element g of Im(d), the image f = L(g) i…

We prove that the solutions of a cohomological equation of complex dimension one and in the analytic category have a monogenic dependence on the parameter, and we investigate the question of their quasianalyticity. This equation is the standard linearized conjugacy equation for germs of holomorphic maps in a neighborhood of a fixed point. The parameter is the eigenvalue $q$ of the linear part. This problem has been first investigated by Arnol'd and Herman. Herman raised the question whether the solutions of the cohomological equation had a quasianalytic dependence on the parameter. Indeed they…
We study the cohomological equation for a smooth vector field on a compact manifold. We show that if the vector field is cohomology free, then it can be embedded continuously in a linear flow on an Abelian group.
We study the linear cohomological equation in the smooth category over quasi-periodic cocycles in $\mathbb{T} ^{d} \times SU(2)$. We prove that, under a full measure condition on the rotation in $\mathbb{T} ^{d}$, for a generic cocycle in an open set of cocycles, the equation admits a solution for a dense set of functions on $\mathbb{T} ^{d} \times SU(2)$ of zero average with respect to the Haar measure. This property is known as Distributional Unique Ergodicity (DUE). We then show that given such a cocycle, for a generic function no such solution exists. We thus confirm in this context a conj…
Let $f$ be a $C^{2+ε}$ expanding map of the circle and $v$ be a $C^{1+ε}$ real function of the circle. Consider the twisted cohomological equation $v(x) = α(f(x)) - Df(x) α(x)$ which has a unique bounded solution $α$. We prove that $α$ is either $C^{1+ε}$ or nowhere differentiable, and if $α$ is nowhere differentiable then the Newton quotients of $α$, after an appropriated normalization, converges in distribution to the normal distribution, with respect to the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability of $f$.
