ASD (Abstract Stone Duality) is a re-axiomatisation of general topology in which the topology on a space is treated, not as an infinitary lattice, but as an exponential object of the same category as the original space, with an associated lambda-calculus. In this paper, this is shown to be equivalent to a notion of computable basis for locally compact sober spaces or locales, involving a family of open subspaces and accompanying family of compact ones. This generalises Smyth's effectively given domains and Jung's strong proximity lattices. Part of the data for a basis is the inclusion relation of compact subspaces within open ones, which is formulated in locale theory as the way-below relation on a continuous lattice. The finitary properties of this relation are characterised here, including the Wilker condition for the cover of a compact space by two open ones. The real line is used as a running example, being closely related to Scott's domain of intervals. ASD does not use the category of sets, but the full subcategory of overt discrete objects plays this role; it is an arithmetic universe (pretopos with lists). In particular, we use this subcategory to translate computable bases for classical spaces into objects in the ASD calculus.
We investigate, and prove equivalent, effective versions of local connectivity and uniformly local arcwise connectivity for connected and computably compact subspaces of Euclidean space. We also prove that Euclidean continua that are computably compact and effectively locally connected are computably arcwise connected.
A duality theorem for the category of locally compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous maps which generalizes the well-known Duality Theorem of de Vries is proved.
An elementary proof is given for the fact that every locally compact subsemigroup of a compact topological group is a closed subgroup. A sample consequence is that every commutative cancellative pseudocompact locally compact Hausdorff topological semigroup with open shifts is a compact topological group.
We define a class of spaces on which one may generalise the notion of compactness following motivating examples from higher-dimensional number theory. We establish analogues of several well-known topological results (such as Tychonoff's Theorem) for such spaces. We also discuss several possible applications of this framework, including the theory of harmonic analysis on non-locally compact groups.
A topological measure on a locally compact space is a set function on open and closed subsets which is finitely additive on the collection of open and compact sets, inner regular on open sets, and outer regular on closed sets. Almost all works devoted to topological measures, corresponding non-linear functionals, and their applications deal with compact spaces. The present paper is one in a series that investigates topological measures and corresponding non-linear functionals on locally compact spaces. Here we examine solid and semi-solid sets on a locally compact space. We then give a method …
We extend to metrizable locally compact groups Rosenthal's theorem describing those Banach spaces containing no copy of $l_1$. For that purpose, we transfer to general locally compact groups the notion of interpolation ($I_0$) set, which was defined by Hartman and Ryll-Nardzewsky [25] for locally compact abelian groups. Thus we prove that for every sequence $\lbrace g_n \rbrace_{n<ω}$ in a locally compact group $G$, then either $\lbrace g_n \rbrace_{n<ω}$ has a weak Cauchy subsequence or contains a subsequence that is an $I_0$ set. This result is subsequently applied to obtain sufficient condi…
A theorem by Norman L. Noble from 1970 asserts that every product of completely regular, locally pseudo-compact k_R-spaces is a k_R-space. As a consequence, all direct products of locally compact Hausdorff spaces are k_R-spaces. We provide a streamlined proof for this fact.
We prove some consistency results concerning the Moving Off Property for locally compact spaces and thus the question of whether their function spaces are Baire.
In this paper we characterise graph inverse semigroups which admit only discrete locally compact semigroup topology. This characterization provides a complete answer on the question of Z. Mesyan, J. D. Mitchell, M. Morayne and Y. H. Péresse posed in their paper "Topological graph inverse semigroups".
We continue studying the properties of $γ_0$-compact, $γ^*$-regular and $γ$-normal spaces defined in [5]. We also define and discuss $γ$-locally compact spaces.
We present a complete classification of Hausdorff locally compact polycyclic monoids up to a topological isomorphism. A {\em polycyclic monoid} is an inverse monoid with zero, generated by a subset $Λ$ such that $xx^{-1}=1$ for any $x\inΛ$ and $xy^{-1}=0$ for any distinct $x,y\inΛ$. We prove that any non-discrete Hausdorff locally compact topology with continuous shifts on a polycyclic monoid $M$ coincides with the topology of one-point compactification of the discrete space $M\setminus\{0\}$.
This note provides a correct proof of the result claimed by the second author that locally compact normal spaces are collectionwise Hausdorff in certain models obtained by forcing with a coherent Souslin tree. A novel feature of the proof is the use of saturation of the non-stationary ideal on ω_1, as well as of a strong form of Chang's Conjecture. Together with other improvements, this enables the characterization of locally compact hereditarily paracompact spaces as those locally compact, hereditarily normal spaces that do not include a copy of ω_1.
In this paper we investigate locally compact semitopological graph inverse semigroups. Our main result is the following: if a directed graph $E$ is strongly connected and contains a finite amount of vertices then a locally compact semitopological graph inverse semigroup $G(E)$ is either compact or discrete. This result generalizes results of Gutik and Bardyla who proved the above dichotomy for locally compact semitopological polycyclic monoids $\mathcal{P}_1$ and $\mathcal{P}_λ$, respectively.
There is a locally compact Hausdorff space of weight aleph_omega which is linearly Lindelof and not Lindelof. This improves an earlier result, which produced such a space of weight beth_omega.
We give a "limit-free formula" simplifying the computation of the topological entropy for topological automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups. This result allows us to extend several basic properties of the topological entropy known to hold for compact groups.
We prove that each closed locally continuum- connected subspace of a finite dimensional topological group is locally compact. This allows us to construct many 1-dimensional metrizable separable spaces that are not homeomorphic to closed subsets of finite-dimensional topological groups, which answers in negative a question of D.Shakhmatov. Another corollary is a characterization of Lie groups as finite-dimensional locally continuum-connected topological groups. For locally path connected topological groups this characterization was proved by Gleason and Palais in 1957.
We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.
We examine locally compact normal spaces in models of form PFA(S)[S], in particular characterizing paracompact, countably tight ones as those which include no perfect pre-image of omega_1 and in which all separable closed subspaces are Lindelof.
This paper pays a visit to a famous contractible open 3-manifold $W^3$ proposed by R. H. Bing in 1950's. By the finiteness theorem \cite{Hak68}, Haken proved that $W^3$ can embed in no compact 3-manifold. However, until now, the question about whether $W^3$ can embed in a more general compact space such as a compact, locally connected and locally 1-connected metric 3-space was not known. Using the techniques developed in Sternfeld's 1977 PhD thesis \cite{Ste77}, we answer the above question in negative. Furthermore, it is shown that $W^3$ can be utilized to produce counterexamples for every co…
We establish that if it is consistent that there is a supercompact cardinal, then it is consistent that every locally compact, hereditarily normal space which does not include a perfect pre-image of omega_1 is hereditarily paracompact.
Suppose that $X=G/K$ is the quotient of a locally compact group by a closed subgroup. If $X$ is locally contractible and connected, we prove that $X$ is a manifold. If the $G$-action is faithful, then $G$ is a Lie group.
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
We prove that a Hausdorff locally compact semitopological bicyclic semigroup with adjoined zero $\mathscr{C}^0$ is either compact or discrete. Also we show that the similar statement holds for a locally compact semitopological bicyclic semigroup with an adjoined compact ideal and construct an example which witnesses that a counterpart of the statements does not hold when $\mathscr{C}^0$ is a Čech-complete metrizable topological inverse semigroup.
We describe the structure of Hausdorff locally compact semitopological $0$-bisimple inverse $ω$-semigroups with compact maximal subgroups. In particular, we show that a Hausdorff locally compact semitopological $0$-bisimple inverse $ω$-semigroup with a compact maximal subgroup is either compact or topologically isomorphic to the topological sum of its $\mathscr{H}$-classes. We describe the structure of Hausdorff locally compact semitopological $0$-bisimple inverse $ω$-semigroups with a monothetic maximal subgroups. In particular we prove the dichotomy for $T_1$ locally compact semitopological …
We note a generalization of Whyte's geometric solution to the von Neumann problem for locally compact groups in terms of Borel and clopen piecewise translations. This strengthens a result of Paterson on the existence of Borel paradoxical decompositions for non-amenable locally compact groups. Along the way, we study the connection between some geometric properties of coarse spaces and certain algebraic characteristics of their wobbling groups.
By proving that, if the quotient space S(X) of the connected components of the locally compact metric space (X,d) is compact, then the full group I(X,d) of isometries of X is closed in C(X,X) with respect to the pointwise topology, i.e., that I(X,d) coincides in this case with its Ellis' semigroup, we complete the proof of the following: Theorem (a) If S(X) is not compact, I(X,d) need not be locally compact, nor act properly on X. (b) If S(X) is compact, I(X,d) is locally compact but need not act properly on X. (c) If, especially, X is connected, the action (I(X,d),X) is proper.
We introduce the algebraic entropy for continuous endomorphisms of locally linearly compact vector spaces over a discrete field, as the natural extension of the algebraic entropy for endomorphisms of discrete vector spaces. We show that the main properties of entropy continue to hold in the general context of locally linearly compact vector spaces, in particular we extend the Addition Theorem.
The characteristic index of a locally compact connected group $G$ is the non-negative integer $d$ for which we have a homeomorphism $G\cong K\times \mathbb{R}^d$ with $K\le G$ maximal compact. We prove that the characteristic indices of closed connected subgroups are dominated by those of the ambient groups.
We prove that for a compact subgroup $H$ of a locally compact Hausdorff group $G$, the following properties are mutually equivalent: (1) $G/H$ is a manifold, (2) $G/H$ is finite-dimensional and locally connected, (3) $G/H$ is locally contractible, (4) $G/H$ is an ANE for paracompact spaces, (5) $G/H$ is a metrizable $G$-ANE for paracompact proper $G$-spaces having a paracompact orbit space. A new version of the Approximate slice theorem is also proven in the light of these results.
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
