We prove an implicit function theorem for C^k-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces over valued fields to Banach spaces (for k at least 2). As a tool, we show the C^k-dependence of fixed points on parameters for suitable families of contractions of a Banach space. Similar results are obtained for k times strictly differentiable maps, and for k times Lipschitz differentiable maps. In the real case, our results subsume an implicit function theorem for Keller C^k_c-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces to Banach spaces.
We show that Sobolev maps with values in a dual Banach space can be characterized in terms of weak derivatives in a weak* sense. Since every metric space embeds isometrically into a dual Banach space, this implies a characterization of metric space valued Sobolev maps in terms of such derivatives. Furthermore, we investigate for which target spaces Sobolev maps are weak* differentiable almost everywhere.
This paper deals with the new concept of interval whose both the bounds themselves are also intervals. We name this new type of interval as Type-2 interval. Here we have introduced Type-2 interval-valued function and its properties. To serve this purpose, we have defined a distance on the set of all Type-2 intervals, named as extended Moore distance for Type-2 intervals which is a metric on the set of all Type-2 intervals. Then we have shown that the space of Type-2 interval is a complete metric space with respect to extended Moore distance. Then we have introduced the concept of limit-continu…
We give a short proof that any non-zero Euclidean space has a compact subset of Hausdorff dimension one that contains a differentiability point of every real-valued Lipschitz function defined on the space.
As established by R T. Rockafellar, real valued convex-concave functions are generically differentiable. It this paper we shall show that for a convex-concave function defined on an open convex set $C \times D,$ there exist dense subsets ${\cal N}$ of $C$ and ${\cal M}$ of $D$ such that the partial derivative with respect to the first variable (resp. second variable) exists on ${\cal N} \times D$ (resp. $C \times {\cal M}$) and therefore the function is differentiable on ${\cal N} \times {\cal M}$. This is an interesting property of convex-concave functions and it does not hold for convex-conv…
In this work we provide a characterization of distinct type of (linear and non-linear) maps between Banach spaces in terms of the differentiability of certain class of Lipschitz functions. Our results are stated in an abstract bornological and non-linear framework. Restricted to the linear case, we can apply our results to compact, weakly-compact, limited and completely continuous linear operators. Moreover, our results yield a characterization of Gelfand-Phillips spaces and recover some known result of Schur spaces and reflexive spaces concerning the differentiability of real-valued Lipschitz…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be Banach or normed linear spaces and $F\subset X$ a closed set. We apply our recent extension theorem for vector-valued Baire one functions arXiv:1512.03717 to obtain an extension theorem for vector-valued functions $f\colon F\to Y$ with pre-assigned derivatives, with preservation of differentiability (at every point where the pre-assigned derivative is actually a derivative), preservation of continuity, preservation of (pointwise) Lipschitz property and (for finite dimensional domain $X$) preservation of strict differentiability and global (eventually local) Lipschitz continu…
We show that every Carnot group G of step 2 admits a Hausdorff dimension one `universal differentiability set' N such that every real-valued Lipschitz map on G is Pansu differentiable at some point of N. This relies on the fact that existence of a maximal directional derivative of f at a point x implies Pansu differentiability at the same point x. We show that such an implication holds in Carnot groups of step 2 but fails in the Engel group which has step 3.
For an arbitrary infinite-dimensional Banach space $\X$, we construct examples of strongly-measurable $\X$-valued Pettis integrable functions whose indefinite Pettis integrals are nowhere weakly differentiable; thus, for these functions the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem fails rather spectacularly. We also relate the degree of nondifferentiability of the indefinite Pettis integral to the cotype of $\X$, from which it follows that our examples are reasonably sharp. This is an expanded version of a previously posted paper with the same name.
We provide sufficient conditions for a set $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to be a non-universal differentiability set, i.e. to be contained in the set of points of non-differentiability of a real-valued Lipschitz function. These conditions are motivated by a description of the ideal generated by sets of non-differentiability of Lipschitz self-maps of $\mathbb{R}^n$ given by Alberti, Csörnyei and Preiss, which eventually led to the result of Jones and Csörnyei that for every Lebesgue null set $E$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ there is a Lipschitz map $f:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^n$ not differentiable at any point …
We investigate the differentiability properties of real-valued quasiconvex functions f defined on a separable Banach space X. Continuity is only assumed to hold at the points of a dense subset. If so, this subset is automatically residual. Sample results that can be quoted without involving any new concept or nomenclature are as follows: (i) If f is usc or strictly quasiconvex, then f is Hadamard differentiable at the points of a dense subset of X (ii) If f is even, then f is continuous and Gateaux differentiable at the points of a dense subset of X. In (i) or (ii), the dense subset need not b…
Let $\mathcal{L}(X;Y)$ be the space of bounded linear operators from a Banach space $X$ to a Banach space $Y$. Given an operator-valued function $u:\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}\rightarrow \mathcal{L}(X;Y)$, suppose that every orbit $t\mapsto u(t)x$ has a regularity property (e.g. continuity, differentiability, etc.) on some interval $(t_x,\infty)$ in general depending on $x\in X$. In this paper we develop an abstract set-up based on Baire-type arguments which allows, under certain conditions, removing the dependency on $x$ systematically. Afterwards, we apply this theoretical framework to several diffe…
We prove that in a Euclidean space of dimension at least two, there exists a compact set of Lebesgue measure zero such that any real-valued Lipschitz function defined on the space is differentiable at some point in the set. Such a set is constructed explicitly.
We study the Lusin approximation problem for real-valued measurable functions on Carnot groups. We prove that k-approximate differentiability almost everywhere is equivalent to admitting a Lusin approximation by $C^{k}_{\mathbb{G}}$ maps. We also prove that existence of an approximate (k-1)-Taylor polynomial almost everywhere is equivalent to admitting a Lusin approximation by maps in a suitable Lipschitz function space.
For the Frechet space E=C^{\infty}(S^1) and for a smooth ϕ: R to R, we prove that the associated map E to E given by x mapstoϕ\circ x satisfies the continuous BΓ--differentiability condition in Yamamuro's inverse function theorem only if ϕis affine. Via more complicated examples, we also generally discuss the importance of testing the applicability of proposed inverse and implicit function theorems by this kind of simple maps.
In this paper, we obtain a version of Ekeland's variational principle for interval-value functions by means of the Dancs-Hegedus-Medvegyev theorem [14]. We also derive two versions of Ekeland's variational principle involving the generalized Hukuhara Gateaux differentiability of interval-valued functions as well as a version of Ekeland's variational principle for interval-valued bifunctions. Finally, we apply these new versions of Ekeland's variational principle to fixed point theorems, to interval-valued optimization problems, to the interval-valued Mountain Pass Theorem, to noncooperative in…
In the present paper, several properties concerning generalized derivatives of multifunctions implicitly defined by set-valued inclusions are studied by techniques of variational analysis. Set-valued inclusions are problems formalizing the robust fulfilment of cone constraint systems, whose data are affected by a "crude knowledge" of uncertain elements, so they can not be casted in traditional generalized equations. The focus of this study in on the first-order behaviour of the solution mapping associated with a parameterized set-valued inclusion, starting with Lipschitzian properties and then…
This article is centered around generalizing a previous implicit function theorem of the author to be applicable for maps f:E sqcap F to F which can be lifted to Keller C^k_pi maps f_i:E sqcap F_i to F_i with F_i Banach and F=projlim F_i . We prove theorems about existence and differentiability of functions g satisfying f(x,g(x))=b constant. In addition to these abstract theorems, we give several examples of applications to proving smooth dependence of the solution on initial/boundary values and the nonlinearity in nonlinear (partial) differential equations.
We prove implicit function theorems for mappings on topological vector spaces over valued fields. In the real and complex cases, we obtain implicit function theorems for mappings from arbitrary (not necessarily locally convex) topological vector spaces to Banach spaces.
We prove an implicit function theorem for Keller C^k_c-maps from arbitrary real or complex topological vector spaces to Frechet spaces, imposing only a certain metric estimate on the partial differentials. As a tool, we show the C^k-dependence of fixed points on parameters for suitable families of contractions of a Frechet space. The investigations were stimulated by a recent metric approach to differentiability in Frechet spaces by Olaf Mueller. Our results also subsume generalizations of Mueller's Inverse Function Theorem for mappings between Frechet spaces. As an application, we prove exist…
Let $S$ be a closed subset of a Banach space $X$. Assuming that $S$ is epi-Lipschitzian at $\bar{x}$ in the boundary $ \bd S$ of $S$, we show that $S$ is strictly Hadamard differentiable at $\bar{x}$ IFF the Clarke tangent cone $T(S, \bar{x})$ to $S$ at $\bar{x}$ contains a closed hyperplane IFF the Clarke tangent cone $T(\bd S, \bar{x})$ to $\bd S$ at $\bar{x}$ is a closed hyperplane. Moreover when $X$ is of finite dimension, $Y$ is a Banach space and $g: X \mapsto Y$ is a locally Lipschitz mapping around $\bar{x}$, we show that $g$ is strictly Hadamard differentiable at $\bar{x}$ IFF $T(\mat…
From the point of view of unification of differentiation theory, it is of interest to note that the general construction principle of Bertram, Gloeckner and Neeb leading to a C^k differentiability concept from a given C^0 one, besides subsuming the Keller--Bastiani C_c^k differentiabilities on real Hausdorff locally convex spaces, also does the same to the "arc-generated" interpretation of the Lipschitz theory of differentiation by Frolicher and Kriegl, and likewise to the "compactly generated" theory of Seip's continuous differentiabilities. In this article, we give the details of the proof f…
Recently Gigli developed a Sobolev calculus on non-smooth spaces using module theory. In this paper it is shown that his theory fits nicely into the theory of differentiability spaces initiated by Cheeger, Keith and others. A relaxation procedure for $L^p$-valued subadditive functionals is presented and a relationship between the module generated by a functional and the one generated by its relaxation is given. In the framework of differentiability spaces, which includes so called PI- and $RCD(K,N)$-spaces, the Lipschitz module is pointwise finite dimensional. A general renorming theorem toget…
We establish the exponential law for suitably topologies on spaces of vector-valued smooth functions on topological groups, where smoothness is defined by using differentiability along continuous one-parameter subgroups. As an application, we investigate the canonical correspondences between the universal enveloping algebra, the invariant local operators, and the convolution algebra of distributions supported at the unit element of any finite-dimensional Lie group, when one passes from finite-dimensional Lie groups to pre-Lie groups. The latter class includes for instance any locally compact g…
The aim of this expository article is to present recent developments in the centuries old discussion on the interrelations between continuous and differentiable real valued functions of one real variable. The truly new results include, among others, the $D^n$-$C^n$ interpolation theorem: {\em For every $n$-times differentiable $f\colon\R\to\R$ and perfect $P\subset \R$ there is a $C^n$ function $g\colon\R\to\R$ such that $f\restriction P$ and $g\restriction P$ agree on an uncountable set} and an example of a differentiable function $F\colon\R\to\R$ (which can be nowhere monotone) and of compac…
In this work we classify the at-point regularities of set-valued mappings into two categories and then we analyze their relationship through several implications and examples. After this theoretical tour, we use the subregularity properties to deduce implicit theorems for set-valued maps. Finally, we present some applications to the study of multicriteria optimization problems.
We prove an extension theorem (with non-tangential limits) for vector-valued Baire one functions. Moreover, at every point where the function is continuous (or bounded), the continuity (or boundedness) is preserved. More precisely: Let $H$ be a closed subset of a metric space $X$ and let $Z$ be a normed vector space. Let $f: H\to Z$ be a Baire one function. We show that there is a continuous function $g: (X\setminus H) \to Z$ such that, for every $a\in \partial H$, the non-tangential limit of $g$ at a equals $f(a)$ and, moreover, if $f$ is continuous at $a\in H$ (respectively bounded in a neig…
We establish exponential laws for certain spaces of differentiable functions over a valued field K. For example, we show that the topological vector spaces C^{r,s}(U x V,E) and C^r(U,C^s(V,E)) are isomorphic if U and V are open subsets of K^n and K^m, respectively, E is a topological K-vector space, and r,s are degrees of differentiability. As a first application, we study the density of locally polynomial functions in spaces of partially differentiable functions over an ultrametric field (thus solving an open problem by E. Nagel), and also global approximations by polynomial functions. As a s…
In this paper we aim to present two general results regarding, on one hand, the openness stability of set-valued maps and, on the other hand, the metric regularity behavior of the implicit multifunction related to a generalized variational system. Then, these results are applied in order to obtain, in a natural way, and in a widely studied case, several relations between the metric regularity moduli of the field maps defining the variational system and the solution map. Our approach allows us to complete and extend several very recent results in literature.
